I'm 26, and I'm from
Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
I grew up in a small town.
You know, there wasn't much to do
out there, so that's sort of where
music came about, and I just
really kept going with that.
Besides being a musician,
I'm actually a painter.
I do murals.
I've done some pretty cool stuff,
but what I really want to do
is focus on my music career.
But there's a lot of obstacles
to deal with when you're trying
to do what you love.
But my girlfriend, she's awesome.
How can doing well on "the voice"
help you guys out as a couple?

Uh, probably in every possible way.
We always said we weren't gonna
get married until we were secure
with where we were in life, so we're
both working towards our artistic goals.

How does this factor into
your aspirations musically?
Oh, they're definitely my inspiration.
If I were to make it on
a team for "the voice,"
this would mean the world to my kids.
You know, it would change their lives.
Me being here at "the voice,"
you know, this was never
in the cards for me.
Me being here in America was
never in the cards for me.
I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I came here to the united
states when I was 5 years old.
In Brazil, you know, the poverty, the
violence is just really, really bad,
and my mom just wanted
a better life for us.
When I first came to America,
I knew absolutely no English.
I basically just started listening
to as much music as I could,
so that's basically how
I learned English.
This would be the American dream, and
it would give me the satisfaction
that my mom didn't bring
me down here for nothing.
These coaches would definitely help
me improve just because of, you know,
where they've been in their life,
the success that they've had.
I just definitely think I'd
get a lot of help from them.
If a coach doesn't pick me,
it's definitely gonna hurt.

I'm 23 years old, and I'm
from Alameda, California.
I feel like being on "the voice"
would be a huge thank-you
to my parents.
They've gone through so much.
When I was 12, my mom was
diagnosed with breast cancer.
I was staying home from school and
taking my mom to chemo and feeding her
and making sure she was okay.
I'm nervous. Um...
You shouldn't be nervous.
You're natural, so leave
it in the hands of God.
I stayed home with her a lot because I
was afraid that I was gonna lose my mom,
and I didn't understand at 12 years old
all these things that were going on,
and I had to grow up a little
faster and be there for her.

My whole motive with music is to help
my family out, and the importance

never thought she'd have
an opportunity like this.
When I was 14, I got diagnosed with
condylar resorption, and they told me
that my jaw had disintegrated.
I was devastated.
I thought, what if I couldn't sing?
What if it was over for me?
I didn't have an option to fail.
Singing is what I was going to
do, and I just didn't give up.
Couple years ago, you know,
you might not have been here.
It was kind of scary 'cause my jaw
could fracture at any moment.
Before the surgery, I mean, the
possibility was that she would not
be able to move her jaw.
After I got the surgery, my jaw was
wired shut for about five months or so,
and I started writing because I was
just so scared that I would never
be able to sing again.
I picked up the guitar, and I
just started writing songs,
even though I couldn't
actually sing them.
I would hum them, and that's
how I got through it.
Before Charlotte gets her chance
to make a team, our next singer,
wants to live the dream that
brought his parents to America.
My parents were born and raised in
Slovakia, former czechoslovakia.
They came here pretty much to
give us the American dream,
give us a better opportunity in life.

So, you want to do well not
just for you and your career...

...but to give back to your family.

Let's see if they find what they're
looking for in our next group of artists.
First up, Broadway star Tony
Vincent hopes his background
gives him the edge he
needs to make a team.
I originally moved to New York
to pursue a pop-rock deal,
but I immediately started doing a lot of
Broadway and wound up getting a chance
to be in "rent,"
at that time this huge theatrical
phenomenon, and that led me to doing Judas
in the revival of "Jesus
Christ superstar."
I just got done working with green
day on their "American idiot" show
on Broadway, and I had this opportunity
to work with queen as a band.
They were getting ready to put together
a show called "we will rock you"
on the west end, and, basically, before
I knew it, I was getting ready to move
to London for about two years to
work with the band exclusively.
It seems incredible because
you have these performances
that got to keep you honest onstage.
It's physically demanding.
Well, eight shows a week is tough.
I mean, it really is for a singer.
And then they asked me to open
the show in America, in Vegas,
which is where we met.
Right.
And I was his costar.
We actually have a picture.
You want to see it?
Of you two together?
Do you have it?
It was like 7 years ago now, right?
So, it was "we will
rock you" in Las Vegas.
And what were you in the play?
Scaramouche.
Oh, my God.
Oh, totally.
Look at the purple hair.

I feel incredibly blessed daily because
I have such a supportive wife,
who's an amazing talent on her own.
So, what about your career -- your
Broadway career, your singing?
My career is a little on hold right
now 'cause I'm sporting a baby bump.

Evans, believes he can get one
as long as he has faith.
I'm a pastor's kid, so, naturally, music
was a big part of my everyday life,
and I had no idea that
singing was my thing.
It just became over time, just
listening and singing along at church.
My dad -- his name is Dr. Tony Evans.
And in the Christian world,
he's pretty well-known.
He started a church with 10 people
in an apartment 36 years ago,
and now it's over 8,000
people in Dallas.
He's written like 40 books and has a
radio broadcast that's on 500 stations
all over the world, so,
um, that's my dad.
I started to feel this pressure
of, "you got to be something."
I mean, I deal with that my whole life.
You just got to be something 'cause your
dad's something. You know what I mean?
But he has never put that pressure on
me, which helps me to kind of recollect
and get a rein on all those thoughts.
What did you think about your son?
I mean, you get up in front of
thousands, right, every Sunday.
You're good in big crowds.
What have you been able
to help Anthony out with?
I have seen him develop not only in
his voice but in his stage presence
and engaging people into the life of
the message that he's singing about.
I just want to be able to convey the
message of being yourself and not being --
you don't have to be perfect.
You can be authentic. Right.
You can be who you are.
And that's the message of Anthony
Evans' music? Yeah. Yeah.

My mom has a background in theater,
and she started taking me
to some of her performances, and
I remember she was directing
"Fiddler on the roof,"
and she cast me as a towns boy in it, and
I loved it, and I just wanted to keep
continuing doing music.
I knew Dylan was gonna go on to
great things the first moment
I saw him onstage.
He just lit up.
My father was not
around for any of this.
I never met my father, so I spent a
lot of time hanging out with my mom,
and no young boy wants to spend
a bunch of time with their mom.
They want to be outside, throwing
baseballs with their father.
But, unfortunately, I didn't have that,
so I just stayed in my room a lot.
It was difficult. I was lonely.
I do think that with my father not being
around, it actually helped me progress
in music more, and I've just been singing
ever since, and it's been my life.
I really can't imagine doing
anything else at all.

me piano isn't really country.
And I just don't believe that.
I don't buy into that.

her number-one fan.

auditions, where our next artist,
hoping she'll get the coaches
to turn their chairs with her
unique approach to country music.
I want to be the first piano
girl in country music.
I grew up playing classical piano and
became a songwriter and then a singer.
But I'm still very much
growing into that.
I didn't sing in front of a
soul till I was 20 years old,
and to be quite honest, it's
still kind of nerve-racking
to think of myself as a singer.
In Nashville, everyone tells me, you
know, "you're gonna have to learn
to play guitar if you
really want to do this."
And I think that this show is a
perfect way for me to go, "no,
there's nobody like me."
I brought my mom and my
youngest brother, Cooper.
He's 10 years old.
I'm really excited to see her onstage

This is a really big audition

that scares me the most.

has a lot to prove -- and
not just to the coaches.
My name is mathai.
I'm 18 years old, and
I'm from Dallas, Texas.
My dad's a psychiatrist, and my mom's
a nurse, and my brother's studying
to be a doctor, so, naturally, it
was expected I would be, you know,
in the medical field.
But last year, I just woke up, and I
was like, "I'm supposed to do music."
How you feeling?
This is seriously crazy, but,
oh, my gosh, I love it.
How has it been for you guys?
How are you feeling
about mathai's dream?
It's very hard.
It's hard for you?
In what way?
I'm in such a conservative
community that it's hard for them
to explain to other people, "my daughter
is not studying in school right now.
"She's actually gonna be a singer,
and she's not gonna be a nurse."
I want her to be happy.
I want her to do what's -- you know,
what's in her, and I think singing is what
she really enjoys doing.
Before mathai gets to audition, our
next singer, 31-year-old Eric tipton,
gets his shot at being judged
strictly on his voice.

I grew up in a really small town, and
everyone listened to country music,
but my parents listened to soul music.
People are very surprised when they
hear my voice because they see
the image first, and then
the voice comes out.
The image plays a giant role.
And that's why "the voice"
is such a cool opportunity.
It's difficult when your son, you know,
wants to make a career of music.
Was that tough for you?
I think it's something that he wanted
to do, you know, at a young age,
and we support him 100%.
When I was a kid, my relationship
with my dad was rough.
We didn't get along very well.
There were times that we,
you know, wouldn't speak
or we were in incredibly
harsh arguments together.
So it's really cool for me now to
have my dad be incredibly encouraging
and to have him here and have him
be so excited for me to be here.
It's a beautiful thing for me.
I think it's a major advantage that the
coaches can't see me because my music
is all about soul, and so if you
can make them feel something,
then you don't need to have an image.
