Can you step back, please?

But he's my baby.

I'm Detective Moreno.

Can I have your names?

I'm Silvia Perez, and he's my son.

Tika Santiago.

Do you have any idea of who want to do this?

Them.

Looks like there's justice after all, huh?

-You got here first, right? -Yeah.

Why don't you make the call?

Do you want to take Mrs. Perez out of here?

Mrs. Perez, you want to follow me?

Hey, I need a statement from you.

I saw nothing. I know nothing.

Come on, now. I know your crew.

What, a problem in the ranks? A rival g*ng?

Give me a reason so I can make a bust.

We both know

you're not going to do a damn thing.

So why front?

Look, your boy's dead. Why don't you care?

I care a lot more than you.

So why don't you come clean?

Aren't you tired of going to funerals and talking to glass?

I already know what crew you're claiming.

[speaking Spanish]

I gave Andre the trash to throw out,

and then I heard the shot,

and Tika screaming.

My baby.

And what makes you so sure it was a cop that shot your son?

Because I heard them threaten him at the courthouse

-after the trial. -Did you know any of them?

The partner, but I don't remember his name.

We'll be in touch, okay?

I know you think that my son k*lled that officer,

but he didn't do it.

Your son was a Latin Lord, the most ruthless

g*ng in this city.

So why don't you save your wishful thinking

for his eulogy?

His friends, maybe.

But not him.

He was a good boy.

Let me get this straight.

Andre Perez, a notorious cop k*ller, walks out a free man

because of tainted evidence, and then

he gets popped on the street.

Any leads?

Mother claims that it was cops revenge, said that uni's hassled

him outside of the courthouse.

Yeah, but she didn't see the sh**ter.

-The girlfriend got there first. -Anything on her?

Tika Santiago.

You know the type, Lou.

Hardcore, g*ng girl.

My guess is she's holding back.

All right, Torres, I want you to talk to the dead cop's partner,

find out his whereabouts.

Moreno, I want you to find out about this girl and her g*ng.

-I want to close this. -Why bother?

A low-life Latin Lord kills a cop, a cop that I knew.

Eddie, take it easy.

Raul Louise gave his life for the job.

There's no way I want to work this case.

Really? What would you suggest?

Leave it open. Whoever did it, did us a favor.

Well, that's fine for you, Torres, but I'm not comfortable

with the k*ller walking the streets, no matter what

the victim was like in life.

Does that get any easier to say the longer you stay

off the street, Lieutenant?

[intriguing music]

This is the job, Detective.

Now, you don't have to like it,

but you will I'll do it.

[phone ringing]

Eddie, look, you can't take it personally.

Well, maybe I can't turn it on and off like you.

Wait, what is that supposed to mean?

Look, if you're angry about this case and you

want to talk about it, fine. But don't take it out on me.

Wait.

You're right.

I'm sorry.

Can I see you later?

You know it.

Yo, partner.

That was my son's school. I need to go pick him up.

-What's wrong? -He's sick or something.

I don't know.

Well, you go. I can handle this alone.

All right, so if it's not too serious,

I'll call you in an hour. If not, meet me in my crib.

-No problem, man. -Thanks.

Connie, where you been?

-Been trying to reach you. -Why?

Your prayers have been answered.

Andre Perez is dead and on his way to hell.

Hey, what's wrong?

God, forgive me.

For what?

You didn't do anything.

You think you know me, Stan, but you don't.

Just leave me alone. Just go away.

Wait, Connie, where'd you go after the trial?

Connie, what the hell did you do?

I'm begging you just back off.

Considering buying a new g*n.

I want you to sell me Raul's 9mm.

Stan, you've been a really good friend.

You were there when my husband died, and you

even there when I miscarried the baby.

When I wanted to die, you were there.

Just I don't want to drag you into this.

I don't know what you're talking about.

I'm just asking you to sell me my partner's g*n.

It's all right.

Oh, you read my mind. Thanks, Lou.

You're welcome.

All right, we got anything worthwhile on this g*ng yet?

A creep by the name of Rolando Ortiz is their enforcer,

but it's run by these two cons doing hard time in AtTika.

All of them wear these beads necklaces, black and gold

are their colors, and our g*ng task force

advises not to even touch them.

Why is that?

Apparently, it's a major diss punishable by death.

They consider them very sacred.

They will die, go to jail, even k*ll for their family.

And the beads represent that.

Does the task force know of any ex-g*ng members?

There's a rumor floating that this g*ng girl might be out,

-but they don't really buy it. -Why not?

They say the only real way out is death.

Oh, thank you.

All right, look, I'm going to come with you.

I want you to talk to this girl and see where she stands,

all right?

Man, maybe I should tell Ed to go by himself.

Okay, Dad. Go back to work.

And who is the parent here? Me.

You know, you should have told me you weren't feeling good.

I thought you were getting lazy or something.

I wanted to go to school.

Really? So what's her name?

Carla.

She likes me. She's always looking at me.

-Is she a cutie? -Come on, Dad.

I'm a Williams man.

All right.

Only the learning channel, all right?

I'm going to call every hour on the hour.

Okay.

[knocking on the door]

What's up?

Yo, G-Money. How you living, kid?

-You all right? -Hey, Eddie.

-How's he doing? -It's not too serious.

Raul's partner, Stan Evans, signed out for

the sh**ting range.

He's probably going to be there right now.

Ed, I know you don't want to work this case, but

we got to do what we got to do.

Raul was like a neighborhood kid.

Grew up hanging out with his dad all the time.

Part of the old guard police force.

You know him well?

I mean, not really, but we used to speak now and then.

Last I heard, he was on the fast track to becoming a detective.

Damn.

It used to be the time uniform got respect.

Now, it's like we're targets.

Look, I know how you feel, but somebody takes

a shot at my people, and I take it personally.

I can't help it.

We didn't even see the punk that did it.

Our backs were turned.

So what do you want us to do?

I want to show whoever did this, whether it was Officer Evans

or one of his friends, that if you act like a perp,

you get treated like a perp.

Give me a little 10 of this 7-2, please.

So you didn't see anything?

Dre was already down when it got there.

You know something.

Now, who's your crew planning to hit back?

I'm not in the g*ng anymore. I outed a long time ago.

You expect me to believe that?

Believe whatever the hell you want.

Look, you're going to let me out of here?

I told you what I know.

What's your rush?

To get to my dope fiend mother before she shoots all my money

off her damn arm.

Well, it looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I'm not a junkie.

I have A*DS, you stupid b*tch.

Just forget it.

Look I have nothing else to say to you.

Get me a lawyer.

[melancholic music]

Cut her loose.

I know she's lying about the sh**ter, Lou.

Yeah, but we can't prove it.

She's asking for a lawyer. We got nothing.

-We got to cut her loose. -And then what?

And then we briefed the g*ng task force

and asked them to keep tabs on the Lord's for a while.

I hope she is lying.

I mean, if she's got A*DS and we lock her up, at least

she'll get some treatment.

[suspenseful music]

I can block a check off and on. More off than on.

You got me?

So before we get started, let the record show that I'm doing

-this under extreme protest. -So are we, Sergeant.

Why doesn't that make me feel better?

It's not supposed to.

Let's just do our jobs, all right?

What the hell do you think you're doing?

Sarge?

I'm outside if you need me, Evans.

We're supposed to be on the same side here.

You go through my locker, you treat me like a perp.

-What gives? -Took a shot at us, Stan.

A b*llet flies when my back has turned that pisses me off.

I didn't do it.

Granted, one of the guys stepped out of line.

Feelings run very deep over this one.

Regardless, you look like you got something to hide.

Check my jacket.

I go by the book.

There's not so much as one complaint against me.

Why am I a suspect?

Come down to the precinct, make a statement on

the record, and it's done.

Otherwise, IAB is going to be all over you, man.

-Trust me, you don't want that. -I got nothing to hide.

Let's dance.

Can I talk to you personally, Ortiz?

[suspenseful music]

I told you, the cop's wife did Andre, and nothing happens.

What are you going to do?

-Nothing for right now. -Why?

He was your manito. How can you diss him?

I don't need you to tell me about our family obligations.

I say it can wait.

We got five-O crawling all over us.

You never cared about Andre.

He smoked that cop for you.

You know?

He did what you didn't have the guts to do yourself.

You think he did it for me?

-Yeah. -You wanted out of the g*ng.

You didn't want to take the beating.

Who's the coward now?

If I'd known, I would have stopped him.

You could have tried.

Think about the sacrifice he made.

You want it done? Do it yourself.

I can't.

Andre was crazy about you.

Protective.

If I had anybody who talked about you,

he'd lost money to be with you.

Always running to take care of you.

I think he loved you more than family.

I need a g*n and the address.

It'll cost you.

As much as I hate you, I think it would be

a very bad idea, Ortiz.

I don't.

So?

What's it going to be?

[intriguing music]

Whatever you say.

[knocking on the door]

Yeah.

What's on your mind, Moreno?

You know that girl?

I couldn't get her out of my head, so I did some digging.

And what'd you find?

She's sexually abused by her stepfather at 10.

In and out of foster care.

Her mother's a junkie.

Joined the Latin Ladies at 14.

Where's her stepfather now?

He died of A*DS complications in 1990.

What could I possibly say to that girl

that can make any difference?

You want a lawyer?

I don't need one.

-Let's get this over with. -All right.

Andre Perez walks on a m*rder charge.

Maybe he celebrates.

Must have ticked you off, right?

Hell, yeah.

I was furious.

Another cop gets blown away and the low life's walk.

How should I feel?

Maybe you should get mad at the cops that caught the case.

-They're the ones that blew it. -Maybe.

But I give credit where it's due, and they

didn't pull the trigger.

Did you Stan?

Fight with him at the courthouse, follow him

-home, and then blow him away? -Why would I do that?

Sworn to uphold the law, not break it.

Maybe this is your chance for justice.

What justice?

I drove his wife home from the courthouse,

tried to keep her calm, tried to explain why the system

failed, and then I went home, just like I told you before.

-Will she back your story? -It's the truth.

I didn't pop that kid, no matter how much I wanted to.

[uplifting music]

What are doing here?

I called here earlier.

They told me what they did to your locker.

-Why are they bothering you? -They're not.

They're just doing their job.

You're a suspect, aren't you?

Look, I can't let you take the blame.

There's no evidence.

Nothing they can do.

So just calm down.

Get in the car.

I'll explain everything.

You can't be seen with me.

[soft music]

[speaking Spanish]

Cheers. Hi.

Oops.

I dropped something.

Eddie.

What's wrong?

Nothing. I just...

I want to talk.

All right.

What's wrong?

What's on your mind?

I just keep thinking about this girl.

I was all hype to break her, but

she told me she had A*DS.

I don't know what the hell to say.

There's nothing to say.

I heard the girls either get beaten or they

let a train of men do them.

And more props for sexual Russian roulette.

That's not how she got it.

That's not the point.

Look, I am not glad about her condition,

but she is involved in an investigation.

That's a little heartless, don't you think?

The girl's dying in that's your position.

She deserves it because she's a girl.

That's not what I said.

She's in a g*ng that kills cops for fun.

So you should save your sympathy and just do your job.

I am doing my job.

At least I'm not going around telling Cooper

what I'm not going to do.

You know what?

I thought we were supposed to spend some quality time

together and not fight.

Weren't you the one that said, Leave your job at the job?

Isn't that you? That's not what this is about.

Then what is it about?

I just wanted to I'll tell you how I felt.

But I guess I need a partner for that.

You're going to stay pissed at me?

I'm not pissed, Eddie. I'm tired.

I want to go to sleep.

Good night.

Oh, yeah.

Good night.

[active music]

[melancholic music]

I can't believe he's gone.

It seems like it just happened.

It did.

I don't think I could live with this, Stan.

Not for the rest of my life.

You have to tell those two detectives

exactly what I told you.

Everything's going to be fine.

Will it?

It has to be.

I stuck my neck out, Connie.

We're in this together.

When will you realize?

Raul isn't here, so why are we?

No!

[g*nshots]

[ominous music]

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

Williams.

Hey, Chantal, slow down. What?

I can't come right now. I'm working a case.

So why don't you stay there and handle it, and I'll be there

as soon as I can, all right?

All right.

Mrs. Louise, I'm Detective Eddie Torres.

He's dead.

It's all my fault.

You can't blame yourself, this is-

I tried to tell him, he wouldn't listen to me.

I knew your husband, you know.

From back in the old neighborhood.

Raul had a lot of friends.

I didn't know many of them until the funeral.

He was a good cop.

Had a lot to be proud of.

And what did that get him?

And now Stan.

Stan made a mistake.

It looks like the g*ng retaliated.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Anything Stan may have done, he did for Raul and for me.

He was a cop.

He should have known better.

I live with that cop's mentality, Detective.

There's nothing you wouldn't do for your partner.

I wouldn't commit m*rder.

And neither would Stan.

I know he didn't sh**t that boy. He was a good cop.

Don't ever say he wasn't.

Did you see who did this?

It happened too fast. I didn't see anything.

Can't stand to save my life.

Look, I know you're scared, and you've been through a lot, but

the Lords, they don't give a damn about life, not anybody's.

It could have been you in that body bag.

It still can be.

It's no more than I deserve.

So why are you here, Chantal?

-What the hell is going on? -He's got a cold.

He'll be back in school tomorrow.

J.C., you were supposed to take a sick day.

Take care of G, be a parent.

I thought we discussed this.

The boy is fine, okay?

It's not that serious.

It's not about a cold.

This is about doing what you need to do for him,

not what's convenient for you.

He needs care and supervision.

And that's exactly what he's getting.

Not as far as I'm concerned.

I think that I can handle this without you running

interference or looking over my shoulder every five minutes.

J.C., you just do not get it, okay?

I'm taking my son out of here. We will manage.

-I'm picking him up tomorrow. -And do what?

You're dependent on your crazy sister to get by.

Now, why are you going to put him through that again?

Because then at least I know that he's being taken care of.

That he is coming first.

I take care of my son.

Now, you need to ask yourself something.

Is this about you or him?

I'm going back to work, and there's some orange juice

in this bag for him.

I'm looking for your partner, Torres.

Personal time.

G's sick, but he'll catch up.

All right, what do we got?

One dead cop, black and gold beads at the scene.

We ran ballistics on the g*n found in Stan's trunk.

It's registered to Raul Louis, and it matches the slug

-found in the cop k*ller's body. -Any prints?

They're running them now.

All right, look, I want you to find this enforcer

of the Lords and ask him what his crew's sacred beads

doing by a cop's body.

Looks like Stan k*lled the kid, so I guess you were right.

Yeah, but I didn't want to be.

[suspenseful music]

[melancholic music]

Rolando Ortiz.

-Where is you run this crew? -What crew, Papa?

Me and my friends just hanging out.

Yeah, you and your friends get off k*lling cops?

Sorry, we don't know nothing about that.

Oh, yeah?

Black and gold beads at the scene.

Black for dominance, gold for the light of the sun.

You don't even know what that means.

What that means is your time has come.

To the way we see it, you hit that cop over your boy, Andre.

That's a good story.

-Make it stick. -I'll make it stick.

What? Huh?

Go ahead.

You're brave for a guy with no eyes

-in the back of his head. -I don't need him.

I got her.

I want that b*tch, Tika.

[speaking Spanish]

Yeah?

-You wanted to see me? -Yeah, come in.

Close the door.

I'm going to get right to the point here, William.

I know you're having trouble adjusting to your son

living with you.

It's coming along. You know how it is.

No, I don't know how it is because my husband shares

the load, so I have help.

So now if you need to take time to get your personal life

in order, I understand, and you should take it.

No, I'm fine. It's all right.

Well, make sure.

Because when you're here, I need you here.

So how's everything?

How's school?

That's okay.

Me and Dad are going to start street hockey, too.

-As soon as I'm up. -That's good.

Says my grades have to be good, but I know he's just kidding.

He's not kidding in neither am I.

Just joking, Mom.

Do I really have to leave?

Well, I think it's best.

But I'm happy here.

Me and Dad do things. We talk.

Do you think you can't talk to me or listen?

I can't talk to you about guy stuff.

Please, Mom.

We'll talk about it later, okay?

You get some sleep.

Okay.

Yeah.

All right, thank you.

They found three sets of prints.

One belong to Stan, one belong to Raul, the others are wild.

I need to meet Detective Torres.

[suspenseful music]

What's wrong?

I'm turning myself in for m*rder.

We can see the wild prints as belonging to my client.

Most cops' wives know how to handle a g*n.

Mrs. Louise, did your husband insist that you learned

to familiarize yourself with is firearms?

-I shot- -No.

These records are from a sh**ting range.

My client was a regular.

She knows how to clean a firearm,

and she knows how to sh**t.

Did you give the g*n to Officer Evans in order

for him to k*ll Andre Perez?

-No. -That's all detectives.

Please arrange for the release of my client.

Stan asked me for it.

After I k*lled Andre Perez.

And now Stan's dead from a b*llet meant for me.

I brought it down on him, and I'll never forgive myself.

Did you see who took him out?

Andre's girlfriend.

Why would you even take the chance?

Andre k*lled my husband in cold blood and just walked away.

The only reason I'm here is because I can't stand

the thought of becoming everything my husband despised.

We'll see the DA now.

Put out on that girl.

I'll check around and see if I can find her.

[suspenseful music]

Where is your daughter, Tecata?

She's dead.

Got the A*DS.

Hey.

What'd they agree to?

DA is going to ask the court for manslaughter.

Six months in, and courts to provide psychiatric care.

That's pretty lenient.

Lenient will be no time at all.

Yeah, but she m*rder*d somebody, Ed.

-He was guilty. -So is she.

-Hey. -How are you doing?

Can we talk?

Not right now.

I've already lost a lot of time I'm getting

screamed on by Cooper.

Listen, just take a second, please.

J.C., you're right to be upset with me.

I was out of line.

We can't keep going back and forth like this, Chantal.

It's not good for us. It's not good for G.

I know.

Listen, I know it's hard for you.

You're trying to find a job and a place to call your own,

but we're all going through changes right now.

You're not the only one that's starting new.

I'm glad you finally realized it.

I'm saying you act like it's no big deal.

It is hard to work and take care of that boy.

Trust me, I do realize that.

I bust my butt every day to get that boy up,

get him to school on time.

Help with the homework.

Cook him dinner.

You know, he can get moody, too.

I mean, there are days when you really have to push

that boy, especially when you're dog-tired.

Tell me about it.

J.C., it was hard for me to let him go, especially

since all he can talk about is how great things are with you.

I think I was feeling a little lost.

Like maybe he didn't need me anymore.

He needs you. He has a mother.

He's always going to need you.

Yeah, but not always.

I mean, his whole world is changing.

His outlook, his body, his friends.

I'm starting to think maybe he needs you a little more.

Trust me, Chantal.

He may not act like it, but he needs you.

I do, too.

[soft music]

Listen, I'm going to take a few days off from work,

Go away.

-This is a private party. -No.

I came to take you home, mama.

When I'm ready, I'll go.

Don't you think you've had enough?

Yep. That's why I'm drinking.

Come on, Nina.

This isn't like you.

You know what I did, Eddie?

I heard what happened.

I let the human being die in the street like a dog.

-It's not your fault. -She beg me.

She just wanted to hold my hand.

I was so afraid I couldn't touch her.

Would you be so quick to take my hand if I had A*DS?

Would you?

You can't make yourself sick over this.

She's dead.

At least she went quickly.

Why is that such a comfort?

I don't know.

Maybe because nobody gets off this planet alive.

How do you want to go?

-I'm so tired, Eddie. -Then come on.
