02x09 - License to k*ll

Post by bunniefuu »

[ horse snorts ]

You can write it out on here,
boy. Just a few words saying
you k*lled Blake Wilkie.

And sign your name.

I didn't do it.

You know who I am?

Sam Jarrad.

Then you oughta know you can't
put nothin' over on me.

Eh. Heard you don't
give nobody a chance.

You're wanted in Texas
and Arizona, besides
right here in Colorado.

Son, you'd 'bout
run outta chances.

All right.

But I didn't put no b*llet
into Blake Wilkie.

I wanted to plenty of times.

Broke me, run me
off my homestead,

but I didn't k*ll him,
do ya hear?

[ pained groan ]

[ pants ]

You had a partner
on that homestead.

Where is he now?

He's working somewhere
up in Laramie.

I ain't seen him since
we split up two years ago.

Just before Wilkie
was gunned down.

Did he do it?
Your partner?

If I were to give you
a paper saying he did,

what would it be worth to ya?

Howard Wilkie offered
a $5,000 reward.

for the man
who k*lled his father.

Dead or alive.

That's a lot of money.

I can use it.

Maybe you got yourself a deal.

Let's have the paper.

"I swear...

"Jess Harper...

"k*lled...

Blake Wilkie."

[ sighs ]

Sign your name. Will Tibbs.

[ sighs ]

Good enough.

It's a far piece into Willow.

It's best we get started now.

Wait a minute.

We made a deal.

You said you'd get your $5,000
and let me go.

[ laughs ] Son, you know
I never said nothin' like that.

How could I?

The court'll need you
as a witness
against Jess Harper.

[ grunts ]

Nice little place
you got here.

Mighty nice.

Say your boss is
a young fellow named Sherman?

Yep.

Off in town?Yep.

Leaves you in sole charge.
Mighty big job
for one man alone.

Oh, ain't exactly alone.

Jess is around the place.

Jess? Who's he?

Jess Harper. He runs things
when Slim's away.

Runs 'em mighty quiet.
I ain't seen nothin' of him
since I been here.

Oh, he's off roundin' up
some fresh horses.

Look for him back
any time now.

[ satisfied sigh ]
Good beef.

Kind of sticks
to a man's ribs.

Another plate?

Oh, thank you kindly.

Might as well have
some more beans
while you're at it.

Sure thing.

Hey, Jess Harper, I heard
that name some place,
might know him.

What's he look like?

BEN: I can't hear ya.
I'll be in there in a minute.

Take your time.

[ sighs ]

Eh... That's, uh, six bits'
worth you've had up 'til now.

Oh, here's a-a cartwheel.
Keep the change.

Thanks. Say, uh, you was
askin' me somethin'
when I was gettin' your food.

Somebody's ridin' in.

I don't hear nothin'.

Man on horseback drivin', uh,
five or six head of horses
in front of him.

Why, there ain't nobody...

Hmm.

Well, I'll be doggone.

It is Jess
bringin' in them remounts.

Get away from that window.

Stand over next to the wall.

What?

Now, we'll just wait here
on your friend Jess.

Howdy, Ben.

I hear you're faster
than payday poker, son.

You wanna try me?

Go ahead.

SAM: Now.

You're too eager, mister.

Suppose you tell me why.

I'm Sam Jarrad.

Bounty hunter.

Used to be.

I'm sheriff
of Willow, Colorado now.

What happened to Ed Mills?

Ah.

Your fault.

What did I have to do with it?

He wasn't bringing you in
fast enough to suit folks.

What for?

Give me your belt, son.

All right. Put 'em out, son.

You k*lled Blake Wilkie.

Some people down in Willow
wanna see you about that.

Leave him alone.
You've got the wrong man.

He'll do for now.
You stay out of this.

You had a better chance

Maybe you should've took it.

Just don't go
pushin' him around.

Let him mind his manners.

Saddle a fresh horse
for your friend here.

Get going.

While you're at it, Ben,
saddle one for yourself.

Ride into Laramie, tell
the sheriff what's happened.

Do that.

"Tell the sheriff
what's happened."

You've got real law-abidin'
since you left Colorado.

Don't know of any laws
I broke in Willow.

Just one we're
kind of fussy about.

Lately, that is.

Can't have folks
goin' around killin'.

Colorado's gonna be
a state in the Union.

Have to see folks
get law and order.

You know as much about law
as a hog knows about Sunday.

Some hogs know when it's
feedin' time.
All they need to know.

And I know what to do
with a k*ller.

I didn't k*ll Blake Wilkie.
I hadn't even heard he was dead.

Yeah? That's real surprisin'.

Sure was expectin' you
to say you shot him.

Do it again if you
only had the chance.

Get goin'.

Keep pokin' me with that iron,
mister, you're liable
to wind up eatin' it.

Try it. Any time.

Mount up.

Get Slim.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Ben, you know better
than to run a horse like that.

Jess sent me for you, Slim.
There's trouble.

What kind of trouble?

Been arrested.
Sheriff from Colorado.

Man named Jarrad.
He took him off.

Jarrad? Sam Jarrad?Yeah.

I'll take your horse, Ben.
You ride into town,
get our sheriff.

Yeah.Go.

[ footsteps ]

[ knock on door ]

Come on in.

Ben found you. Good.
Ready to go?

We're not going anywhere, Slim.

You rode all the way
out here to tell me that?

Not exactly. We rode out here
to keep you from getting
into a lot of trouble.

You're in my way.

You better be ready
to use that.

'Cause you might just have to.

He's only following
my orders, Slim.

If you've got anything
to say, you say it to me.

Sam Jarrad took Jess
outta here.

I've heard about Jarrad.
I know what he is.

Jarrad is a lawman.

He's got a warrant.
He showed it to me
before he came out here.

What good is his warrant
here in Wyoming?

Enough. If I want a man in
Colorado, I expect the same kind
of cooperation I'm giving him.

He'll k*ll Jess
the first chance he gets.
You know that!

No, I don't know that.

There's a lot of talk
about Jarrad, sure,
talk is cheap.

But as far as I know, Jarrad has
never k*lled a man that wasn't a
m*rder*r trying to break loose.

Jess isn't a m*rder*r.
I'm not going to stay here
and see him k*lled like one.

Jarrad is not going to
let you take Jess
away from him.

Not without a fight.

All right, that's the way
it's gonna be, then.

Slim, this is a fight
you're gonna have to lose
no matter how it comes out.

If Jarrad g*ns down
you and Jess, that's one thing.

But even if you get
only the best of it,

you'll still be guilty of
interfering with a peace officer
in the performance of his duty

and I don't have to
tell you what that means.

Now with you on the run,
what's going to happen
to this place?

What's going to happen to Andy?

Jess is the best friend
I've ever had.

He's counting on my help.

Don't stop me.

All right, help him.

But only as much as
the law allows,
no more than that.

Give me your word on that
and I'll swear you in
as a deputy.

I'll pin a star on ya,
give you the necessary
identification papers,

and you can help Jarrad
protect his prisoner.

The only protection
Jess needs is from Jarrad.

Maybe so.
How 'bout it?

All right.

There's something
you oughta know right now.

If Jess is dead
when I catch up with him,

Colorado's gonna lose a sheriff

or you're gonna lose a deputy.

$5,000.

Somebody wants me real bad.

Howard Wilkie.

Took over the ranch.
Done all right.

Howard can afford to pay
top dollar for you.

On the hoof or in a box.

Know what this means?

Means we're in Colorado now.

My country.

Lot of money, huh, Jess?

It's more money than
I ever seen before
in one clip.

You haven't seen it yet.

That's true.

You figure you can get away?

I don't figure nothin'.

I didn't k*ll Blake Wilkie.
And there's nobody
can prove I did.

I've been handlin' men like you
for more than 20 years.

And they all start off
by sayin'
they're not guilty.

But you know better.

When they got a chance
to run for it, they took off.

Would an innocent man do that?

Might. If he was sure
the deck was stacked
against him.

You sound just like
all the others.

JESS: I know why
all your prisoners
tried to run off, Jarrad.

You do?

'Cause you look
just plain careless.

[ hammer clicks ]

I figured it was empty.

You'd be surprised
how many innocent men will
try to sh**t you in the back

with an empty r*fle.

Look at it my way, Jess.

It's easier, safer, cheaper
bringin' in a dead man than
it is bringin' in an alive one.

You know something, Jarrad?

There's a lot of lawmen
that think a man's not guilty
until a judge or a jury say so.

Is that a fact?

Well, I'll tell you
the truth, Jess.

I'm a pretty good
judge and jury myself.

Once a man starts runnin',
there's no point in wasting
time or money on a trial.

You see what I mean?

[ satisfied sigh ]

[ sigh ]
Oh, uh, forgot to tell you.

I only brought enough food along
for the one of us.

Might get a little hungry
between here and Willow.

Don't matter. Do me good
to thin down some.

'Fraid you're due to get
a little dry, too.

I can't afford to waste water.

Why waste water on me?

Wet or dry,
I'm still worth $5,000.

Hey, not bad.

You might even be fast enough
if you gave me a square shake.

You think I'm out here
to play games with you, Harper?

Yeah. Only you make
the game look too easy.

But I'm just thick at it enough
to think you're smarter
than you act.

Kind of sure of yourself.

What's to keep me from sayin'
you was trying to run
when I shot you?

Nothin'. But if that's
what you're gonna do, you better
start shootin' right now.

'Cause I ain't runnin'.

Don't hold with shootin'
a man down in cold blood.

Never did.

Oh, you're all heart, Jarrad.

Now you know there's
only one shot in my g*n.

I might have to pull the trigger
five times before I get to it.

Supposin' you hit the cartridge
the first or second time
you pull the trigger.

I'm offerin' you
five-to-one odds.

Where's your sportin' blood?

Right where I like it.
Inside and with no leaks.

'Sides, you're just the kind
of sidewinder that'd be carrying
a Derringer under your hat.

You've been around too much.
The Derringer's under my arm.

Well, I'm sorry
to disappoint you, Sheriff--

Shut up.

Jess.Slim, look out.

Hold it, Jarrad! I'm comin' out.

Move over to the fire, slow.

I'm a deputy.

I got a letter for ya.

From our sheriff in Laramie.

Get over there,
next to him.

Speak your piece.

And it better be good.I'm Slim Sherman.

The sheriff deputized me
to make sure that Jess makes it
into Willow. Alive.

Mighty interestin' story.

Only you left out somethin'.

Harper works for you,
you're his friend.

You come sneakin' in here
with a g*n in your hand.

How 'bout that part of it?

No arguments there.

If Jess had been dead,
you were gonna be next.

But as it is, the first
part of it still goes.

I didn't ask your sheriff
for no deputy.

I can't help that.
You got one.

And I'm gonna see
that the prisoner
reaches Willow. Alive.

And gets a fair trial.

It sounds good.
' Course you could be lyin'.I could be.

But I wouldn't be standin' here
with a letter from our sheriff
and wearin' a deputy's badge.

Let me see that letter.
No, you don't have to
bring it to me, son.

Put it down.
Right there on that rock.

Slim.

What you said about
that fair trial in Willow,

you don't really
believe that, do you?

If that trial's rigged, Jess,
we'll have it appealed.

Look, Slim, I'm glad you're here
but let's not kid ourselves.

There ain't no trial
waitin' for me in Willow.

Just a rope. Jarrad made
that clear
without even saying so.

Did you k*ll that man
you're charged
with killin', Jess?

Even in a fair fight?

No, Slim, I didn't.

That's good enough for me.
No one's gonna sell you out.

Not while I'm around.

Well, looks like you're
a sure enough deputy, all right.

You want me to tell him
what I've got, Harper?

Or do I do it?

He's got a paper signed
by my ex-partner says I did it.

Well, we'll just have to find
your ex-partner and have him
pony up with the truth.

That'll be kind of hard to do.

He's dead.

Jarrad saw to that.

Self defense.

Sure. And a b*llet
in the back.

I'll tell you somethin'
for certain.

When a man like Will Tibbs
tries to g*n me, I don't
much care where he gets it.

What he isn't talkin' about,
Slim, is that he does everything
but give a g*n to his prisoner.

So he can k*ll him with
a Derringer he carries
under his arm.

Well, it's not
happenin' this time.

Sure, it's not. I got
a deputy helpin' me.

Ought not to be no trouble
with the prisoner at all.

One thing, though.

You ain't claimin'
no part of the reward.

Not a cent of it.

Just the right amount.

Well, better get
some shut-eye.

[ sighs ]
Long day tomorrow.

Oh. I'll toss you to see
who takes first watch
on the prisoner.

Another thing about the sheriff-

he likes to gamble
on a sure thing.

No matter which way that coin
falls, Slim, you lose
the minute you go to sleep.

Not as long as you're awake.

You gangin' up on me
with a prisoner?

Just not taking any chances.

Maybe I feel the same way.

I go to sleep and the two of you
high-tail it out of here.

Well, I wouldn't leave
without Jess.

Handcuff him to
that tree over there.

Thanks a heap, I thought
you were on my side.

Maybe you got the makings of
a lawman at that, Sherman.

Come on.

I don't know which is worse,
being captured by him
or rescued by you.

I'm sorry, Jess.
He's gotta be able
to trust us.

We've got a long ways
to go together.

Hey, you hear that, Jarrad?

You gotta trust us,
how 'bout that?

[ laughs ]

I trust ya. Besides,
I'm a light sleeper.

Mighty light.

Wake me up whenever you want.

[ sighs ]

Nice trick, Slim. What do you mean?

Handcuffin' me
to the tree like this.

Now I'll sleep like a baby.

You can get his key
and we can ride.

I can't, Jess.
I wish I could.
I gave him my word.

You don't have to
keep your word, he'd just
laugh at ya if you did.

Still doesn't change anything.

I told the sheriff
I wouldn't turn you loose.

You mean you went through
all this just to see me hang?

You're not gonna hang.

What can you do about
a judge and a jury
in Willow?

Sure, I'm not guilty,
but they'll never believe me.

We'll make 'em believe you.

How?

Let's worry about that
when the time comes.

Right now, why don't you
try and get some sleep?

All right.
We'll play it your way.

SLIM:
Hold it.

Now, toss that to me.

Now the other one.

Now, we're going after Jess.

And we're gonna catch him.

But you're ridin' in front
of me all the way.

You make one wrong move
and I'm gonna blow
your head off. Understand?

[ grunts ]

[ sighs ]

Good ol' Slim.

I knew I could
count on you.

Get some water.

[ horse snorts ]

Take off those handcuffs.

Now wait a--Take 'em off!

We're gonna bandage his wrists
the best way we can.

You got anything to eat?

You've been chasin' me
for so long, I'm about
half starved.

There's some beef jerky
in my saddlebag.

Well, get it!

SLIM:
Go on and try it.

I'd enjoy that
right about now.

How do ya like
your new deputy, Jarrad?

Real big help, ain't he?

Not bad.Not bad?

He's a real thing
with that tin star
on his chest.

You're the only one
out of line, Jess.

You're acting like a guilty man.

Now, why did you run?

Why, you writin'
a book or somethin'?

You're gettin' to sound
just like Jarrad.

I'm on your side. All the way.
You know that.

Now answer my question.

All right. The Wilkie family
owns Willow.

At least that's the way it was
when the old man was alive.

You didn't change nothin'
when you bushwhacked him,
Harper.

Shut up, Jarrad.

I'm askin' Jess.

Will Tibbs and I
took up a homestead.

Without Blake Wilkie's
permission.

He sent some of his hands
over to burn us out
and run our stock off.

We took it to court.

Judge ruled we were trespassin'
on Wilkie property.

Threw the case out.

Same judge that's gonna try me.And you weren' trespassin'?

In Willow, Colorado, you can't
even take a deep breath without
goin' through the Wilkies.

Just might be their air.

Sherman, they're all alike.

This one's got more nerve
and brains than them others,
maybe, but that's it.

Why don't you just
give up, go home?

Let me handle this
gunsling my way.

SLIM:
There's only one place
we're goin'.

The three of us.

That's to Willow, Colorado.

And we're goin' together.

Just as you say, son.

Only, you sure the three
of us are gonna make it?

I know two of us that are.

[ horse snorts ]

Smart thing to do
is to pass it up.

We need food
and good water.

That's the only relay station
between here and Willow.

You said so.

I'll tell you what.

I'll go in and fetch
whatever you want.

Get a spare g*n,
no thank you.

All right, you go in,
and I'll stay here with Jess.

The three of us
stay together.

Don't get any ideas.

It's not loaded.

Lead off, Jess.

[ horse snorts ]

Well, that's a lot of help.

What'd ya expect,
you're plasted all over
the whole territory.

Howdy.

Well, howdy, Mr. Jarrad.

Howdy, Clem.

Howdy.Howdy.

Somethin' I can do
for you boys?

I would like a square meal.
Food and supplies and
fresh water to take along.

Cash money?

I wasn't figurin'
on openin' an account.

Well, you'd be surprised
the d*adbeats and saddle tramps
you run into in this business.

How 'bout the food?

Oh, comin' right up.

Luke? What's keepin' ya?

I better give him a hand.

Now, here ya are.

There.

Try some of this.

How 'bout some coffee?

Eh, hot and brew up
right this minute.

The ol' boy spotted Harper.

Yeah. Better call him back.

Clem?

Clem!

Here you are, boys. Blacker
than ink, stronger than sin,
just the way you like it.

We're kind of in a hurry.

We want some beans
and bacon
and some flour.

Enough for a couple days.

Fill those canteens
on the saddle.

Oh, I'll take a bushel
of any kind of grain
for the horses.

Yes, sir.

Luke? We got a job
to do here.

CLEM:
Fetch down a sack of flour
and I'll tote it on out.

Now you get the bacon
and I'll handle the coffee
and the canteens.

That's about that, I reckon.

Pretty good set of lungs
on the old man. What do you mean?

That guy he's talking to
just cleared the ridge
about half a mile off,

ridin' like his britches
are on fire.

[ laughs ]

That does it. This old fool will
have half the bounty hunters
in Colorado down on our tail.

Maybe so, Sam,
but they'll take care of me
when they get their money,

and that's more
than I can say for you.

Yeah, well I'll
take care of you
right now--

Leave him alone, Jarrad.

The harm's done.
Our best chance
is to get out of here.

Come on, Jess.

Get out.

[ laughs ]

Look.

It's a good thing we're not
coming down that road right now.

Come on.

[ horse snorts ]

Trouble is we'll have to
slant back close to the road
to get around them rocks.

[ horse snorts ]No cover.

They'll spot us
and be on our backs.

Now you're beginnin'
to make sense.

Hey, what are you doin'?

Keepin' you honest.[ hammer clicks ]

You've been tellin' me
that Jess is a m*rder*r.
Desperate and dangerous man.

But if that's so, you better not
make any wrong moves,
not with that g*n in his hand.

Better go on foot from here.

You go first.

With him at my back?

You'll be safe enough.

I'll guarantee it.
I'll be right behind him.

If Slim's wrong, Jarrad,
I'll apologize.

[ g*nshots continue ]

[ hoofsteps recede]

One of 'em got away.

I'll bet you a dollar
against a plug nickel
I know where he's heading.

You're still a dead game sport
when it comes to
a sure thing, Jarrad.

Young Wilkie'd pay plenty
for the news we're on the way.

Why should it be worth
anything to him?

He'll be payin' the reward
when we get there.
Isn't that enough?

You don't know Howie.

While I'm still gamblin',
I'll cover anything
you wanna put up

young Wilkie'll organize
a rip-roarin' neck tie party.

Come out and meet us.

That shouldn't bother you any.

You'll get your money
hot or cold. That's a fact all right.

Anyway, I wanna thank you
for savin' me
from gettin' my head blowed off.

I'm still not sure
why you did it.

Easy. If I'd let
them bounty hunters
pick you up,

that's 5,000 good reasons
right there.

I mighta known that's how
you'd figure it.

How else?

I'm takin' up a collection.

Those g*ns you've got.

Let's see you try.

You heard what he said.

The other one.

You gonna make me
ask you twice, Jess?

Now what about that swamp
east of here?

How close does it come
to Willow?

About a mile
in one place.

If Wilkie is bringin'
a lynchin' mob out,

he wouldn't be expectin' us
to come that way, would he?

Not likely. Horse can't
get through there.
Patches of quicksand.

Man don't stand much of a chance
in a place like that.

No, but three men might.

Now, you're both expectin'
trouble from Wilkie on the road
into town, right?

All right, we're gonna
take our chances in the bog.

I don't have to take
any chances.

You do if you wanna
protect that bounty money.

Now lead off.

And thanks.

What do you think, Ed?

Sit tight. Sam Jarrad'll
bring Harper in.

He'll get a fair trial
and we'll hang him.

Job I wanna handle personally.

Well, lynchin's a bad business.

And with Harper,
there's no point to it.

Except I promised to k*ll
the man who m*rder*d my father.

The court'll save you
the trouble.

Don't you like
your job here, Ed?

All right, Howard.
You're the boss.

Don't forget it.

Now mount up every man
on the place.

I don't want
any trouble with Jarrad.

Why would Sam give you trouble?

You're payin' him.
All we have to do
is meet him on the road.

He'll turn Harper
over to us.

If he's on the road.

Well, why wouldn't he be?

Maybe he's comin'
through the swamp.

There's already been an attempt
to take a prisoner
away from him.

Jarrad's pretty cagey.

Yeah. Cagey enough to know
who that bounty hunter'd
come runnin' to.

No, he'll be on the road.
He'll be glad to see us.

Maybe. Anyway, we'll check
the road first.

I don't care where
we catch up with Jarrad.

Just so I tie the knot
around Jess Harper's neck

all by myself.

[ calls out ]

[ grunts ]

Jarrad!

Stop movin',
you're making it worse!

Give me those handcuffs.

Hold on!

Grab my arm.

[ noises of struggle ]

Grab it, Jarrad!

JESS:
Lock it on!

JESS:
[ grunting ]

[ all struggling ]

[ groans ]
Pull, Slim!

[ grunting ]

[ sighs ]

How come you did that?

[ sighs ]

I don't know.

Ain't nobody offerin'
five cents for your hide.

[ panting ]

Figured I-I was done for.

Sorry way for a man
to have to die.

Is there any really good way
that you can think of?

[ hoofsteps approach ]

Any sign of him yet?Rode all the way to Red Rock,
didn't see a thing.

Should've followed my hunch.
They're comin' through the bog,
it's gotta be that way.

Line up, all of you!
Follow me!

That's crazy, Howard.

Let's go!

[ sighs ]

Well, we made it.

Road's right up above.

Can we take a break?

No, might as well keep movin'.

I'm wearin' enough of the stink
of this place to last me.
[ grunts ]

HOWARD:
Hello, Sam. Where's your g*n?

Funny way of bringin' in
a prisoner.

You got any complaints,
see me in town.

No complaints.
You did a good job.

Now I'll take over.

That's not the way
it's gonna be, Howard.

I'm takin' him into town.
Hold him for trial.

$5,000 waitin' for you
at the ranch house.

It's yours.

Now take off
and leave Harper with me.

That's a lot of money.

I'll pick it up
tomorrow, Howard.

After I see to my prisoner
being locked up
all safe and sound.

One last time, Jarrad.

I want Harper.

I wouldn't try to take him
if I was you, Howard.

[ c*ck g*n ]

I'm a cinch
to blow you wide open.

What are you standin' there for,
you heard what he said!

Maybe they heard it too good.

Go on with what
you were sayin', Sam.

I'll do that, Ed. Thank you.

The old sheriff always said
there was no evidence
against Jess Harper, Will Tibbs.

You were the boss
so I took your word there was.

All right.
Let's hear that evidence now.

Harper and Tibbs
hated my old man.

'Cause he ran 'em off
the open range land.

Tibbs turned outlaw,
everybody knows that.

Jess?

No argument there.

But if every man
who hated Blake Wilkie
took a shot at him,

it'd make a fair sized
firing squad.

You can start
with his own son.

Blake'd give him a beatin'
every time he got out of line.

Howie'd come poundin' into
Willow lookin' for a skin full
of whiskey courage.

You're lyin!Am I?

Some of your own men
must have heard you talkin' big.

Everybody else did.

Well how 'bout it? How many
of you men heard him threaten
to get his old man?

Some of ya must've!

What do you got
to say about that, Howard?

I don't have
to answer you, Jarrad.

You're through.
I'll see to that.

'Fore you do, I wanna hear
that hangin' evidence.

All right. My father told me
who m*rder*d him.

He told me Tibbs and Harper
did it. He told me that
with his dyin' breath!

ED:
Forgetting something, Howard?

Shut up, Galen! Not this time, Boss.

I'm the one who found
your old man that night,
remember?

He was already dead
when I found him.

[ groans ]

[ pants ]
[ laughs ]

I just thought of someone
who'd give more than five cents
for my hide, Jess.

Who's that?

Me.

[ pants ]

Thank you kindly, son.

[ grunts ]

You know what I forgot
to tell ya the day
you come home?

You're gettin' married?

Oh, no. Nothin' like that.

You learned how to cook.

Yep. No![ Slim and Jess laugh ]

It's about that silver dollar
that Sam Jarrad give me for his
food the day he took Jess off.

What about it?

It isn't silver at all.
It's lead![ Slim and Jess laugh ]

Now how do you figure a lawman
would do a thing like that?
