(Hammering)

(Humming)

Bye, Mom!

Brr, it’s too close to spring

to be this cold.

I hope it gets warmer or

tomorrow’s final match with

Nutchester will have to be moved

to their field.

Bill’s mom said the trees in

Nutchester have already

blossomed.

I don’t understand.

How could it be spring in

Nutchester and so cold here in

Nutwood?

Usually the trees are filled

with birds at this time of year.

(Bird chirping)

Oh, look, Dad.

There’s one.

(Wind howling)

(Chirping)

(Chittering)

Hmm.

It looks as though he’s moving

to Nutchester.

Well, cold or no cold, our

team still has to practice.

I’m going to find Bill and the

others.

Bye, Dad!

I know just the thing for

this job.

A nice, hot cup of tea.

(Wind howling)

Spring seems to be arriving

everywhere else except Nutwood.

We certainly are having the

oddest weather this year.

Oh!

Oh, no!

My spring machine ruined!

I must’ve crossed a wire or

something.

Oh, no you don’t!

Briar, we simply don’t have

anymore time for your machine.

Are we inventors or are we imps

of spring?

We’re imps of spring, sir.

Imps of spring?

Perhaps you can tell me why

spring is late this year.

That’s a good question, uh...

Rupert.

Rupert Bear.

I’m Erin, supervising imp of

spring, Nutwood Forest.

This is my apprentice, Briar.

The reason spring is late in

Nutwood this year, Rupert, is

because Briar here has been

wasting all her time inventing.

Briar, as imps we are supposed

to make sure spring arrives on

time.

But my spring machine was

supposed to help us get our work

done faster.

And it would’ve been safer, too.

It was neither faster nor

safer.

Now we’re just going to have to

go back to the old-fashioned

way.

Not the Staff of Spring!

It-- it makes me nervous.

Nonsense!

If it was good enough for me, it

will be good enough for you.

Oh!

(Cracking)

Briar, if you’re ever to

become a fully fledged imp of

spring, you’re just going to

have to get used to using the

staff!

You see?

Nothing to it.

Now, come on.

We’ve got a lot of work to do.

I was wondering!

Will spring arrive on time

tomorrow morning?

Spring will be here tomorrow

or I’ll eat my hat.

Yippee!

And the pass goes over to

Rupert.

He breaks it on a goalie.

He shoots, he scores!

The ball bursts through the net

and into the crowd.

And--

Uh...

I’ve lost the ball.

That’s the trouble with having

such a great shot.

(Chuckling)

Hmm.

I was sure it landed here.

(Rustling)

I’ll bet it's Algy playing a

trick on me.

Who?

What?

Where?

When?

(Sniffing)

Yuck!

Hey, you’re not Algy.

Eeeek!

Where?

Who?

What?

Where did you go?

Hey!

I’m sorry, I didn't mean to

frighten you.

Who are you?

What do you want?

My name’s Rupert.

I’m a bear.

I was just after my ball--

Where?

You’re made out of branches.

Do you have a name?

Raggedy is not going to tell

you his name.

Raggedy, so that’s your name.

Oh, you tricked me!

Do you live around here?

No more tricks.

Oh, you live in there.

Wouldn’t you prefer a tree

that’s alive?

Raggedy hates all green

things.

Leaves, flowers, blech!

Makes Raggedy itch.

When?

Where?

Who?

What?

What’s an Algy?

Algy’s not a what.

He’s a who.

He’s a friend of mine.

Friend?

Friend?

What is friend?

A friend is someone who--

well, they’re always-- friends

are... friendly.

What is "friendly?"

Hmm.

Maybe it would be easier if you

just met my friends.

I’m going to see them in Nutwood

right now.

Would you like to come?

What is this long, yellow

hair?

Oh, that’s my scarf.

My mom made it for me.

What’s a "Mom?"

A mom?

She’s like a dad only she's a

mom.

I don’t understand!

Podgy, come on.

We don’t have all day.

What’s so complicated about

buying an apple?

I’ve only got enough money

for one.

I have to make sure I get the

biggest.

RUPERTHello, everyone!

ALLHi, Rupert.

I’ve got some great news.

Spring is going to arrive on

time.

Tomorrow will be much warmer.

Great!

That means the final match will

be in Nutwood.

Come on, everyone.

It’s time to practice.

Wait!

I’ve got a surprise.

I met the most curious character

in the woods.

That’s odd.

He was here a second ago.

PODGYHey!

Help!

What is it?

Rupert, is this Algy friend?

He’s after my apple.

Raggedy, get down from there.

That’s not Algy.

That’s Podgy.

Hey!

Eeeek!

Eeek!

My apple!

What’s going on here?

Eeeek!

Who?

What?

Rupert, who is this--

What?

Rupert, is this Algy friend?

No, Raggedy.

Uh, it’s okay, Tiger Lily.

He’s quite harmless.

Rupert, why does he keep

asking for me?

Where?

Who?

Algy?

Ahhh!

Raggedy, don’t!

I found it!

Eeeeek!

Yah-ow!

Eeek!

What?!

Is that friends?

Well, they used to be.

Mom, I brought a new friend.

Oh, that’s nice, dear.

But where is this new friend of

yours?

He’s right here, Mom.

His name is...

(Rattling)

Raggedy!

Who?

What?

Eeeek!

When?

What?

Who?

(Snickering)

Ooh!

What?

Ow!

Eeek!

Who?

What?

(Piano playing)

Eeeek!

Yah!

Fire in the tree house!

No!

Eeeek!

(Coughing)

Eeeek!

It’s okay, Mom.

Raggedy just had a few

questions, that’s all.

Who?

Rupert’s new friend.

Friend?

I don’t understand.

I can’t imagine even someone

like Raggedy not having at least

one friend.

Hmm.

Well, I certainly can.

He doesn’t even know what a

friend is.

The more I tried to explain,

the more confused he got.

Instead of trying to explain

to Raggedy what a friend is, it

might be simpler to show him.

Show him.

Yes, Mom, that’s what I'll do.

I’ll be his friend.

There, all done.

I had hoped to have everything

planted in the garden by now.

But it’s still much too cold.

Oh, Mom!

The imps told me that spring is

definitely going to be here

tomorrow.

The imps?

The imps of spring.

Erin and Briar.

I don’t see a single bud on

any of the trees.

Those imps have a lot to do.

(Wind howling)

Hurry, Briar!

Help us, Rupert!

We’ve almost got him.

Almost got who?

Hurry up, Briar!

I’ve got Raggedy trapped.

Raggedy?

We’re going to get rid of

Raggedy once and for all or I’ll

eat both our hats!

Why do you want to get rid of

Raggedy?

Because he’s a menace.

Every time he moves into a tree

he kills it.

RAGGEDYLeave me alone!

Last autumn, this was a

beautiful oak tree in the prime

of its life.

ERINNow it’s old and

withered.

All because of you!

Go away!

Take spring with you.

Green leaves.

Flowers.

It makes Raggedy so itchy.

Raggedy, you’ve k*lled your

last tree in this forest.

If would be the last tree

ever if imps just leave Raggedy

alone!

Every time he finds a new home,

imps push it over!

It is our solemn duty as imps

of spring to get rid of the old

and make way for the new.

It’s the essence of spring.

But can’t you--

Stand back.

No!

Eeeek!

Out with the old.

And in with the new.

Raggedy get you for this!

You just wait!

You’ll do nothing of the

kind.

You’ve interfered with spring

for the last time!

Eeeek!

Erin, there’s no time to go

chasing after Raggedy.

Rupert’s right.

Besides, there’s nothing Raggedy

can do to get even.

Well, then, let’s get back to

work.

Even with Raggedy out of the

way, we’ll still have to work

hard to get everything done.

Spring must be on time.

Not much Raggedy can do, eh?

We’ll see about that.

(Snickering)

(Giggling)

Oh, come on, Rupert.

Cheer up.

Oh, Briar, I can’t help

thinking that all Raggedy needs

is a friend.

Just one.

We did the right thing.

We couldn’t let Raggedy

interfere with the change of

seasons.

No, I guess not.

Now come on, Rupert.

Spring is going to be here

tomorrow.

We should be happy.

You’re right.

That’s better.

Now watch this.

I’m really getting the hang of

the staff now.

Wow!

That was great, Briar.

I think Erin’s going to be

pleased.

And it looks like I’ll

pass my apprenticeship after

all.

Hey, Briar, look.

It’s a bird's nest.

We’d better get it into a

tree.

Here, Rupert.

Give me a leg up.

(Raggedy snickering)

(Straining)

There.

The staff!

Where’s the staff?

I put it down right here.

Ha!

Thought you’d get rid of old

Raggedy.

Raggedy told you he’d get even.

(Snickering)

Oh, no, Rupert!

We have to get the staff back.

We just have to!

(Wind howling)

ERINWhat?!

BRIARIt’s all my fault.

I should never have let the

staff out of my sight for a

single moment.

A lifetime of caring for

Nutwood Forest.

Making sure spring always

arrived on time.

That’s all gone now.

Forever.

I’ll talk to Raggedy and

convince him to give the staff

back.

It’s no use.

Nothing will ever make him give

it back.

I can.

I know I can.

Brr!

What’s going to happen to all

the little forest animals if it

stays cold in Nutwood forever?

Raggedy?!

Come on out!

I know you’re here somewhere.

I just want to talk.

I’m your friend.

Go away!

Leave Raggedy alone!

No more tricks!

Please listen to me.

I’m sure there's a way to work

this out.

I’ll help, I promise.

Trust me, I’m your friend.

What is friend?

Rupert can’t tell me.

Now!

Eeeek!

Give back the staff.

Trick!

Trick!

Friend is tricks!

No friend!

No friend!

Raggedy, no!

Raggedy, you don’t know what

you’re playing with.

The staff is dangerous.

Give it back before you--

(Laughing)

Eeeek!

Quick!

We must save the staff!

We must save spring!

Just...

a...

little--

Eeek!

(Gasping)

BOTHWhoa!

Raggedy!

No!

The Staff of Spring.

It’s gone.

Now there will be no birds.

No flowers.

No blossom on the trees.

You let the staff be destroyed

just to save him.

Now Raggedy understand what

friend is.

Eeek!

No!

There will never be another

spring in Nutwood.

Ever.

It’s not your fault, Rupert.

I’m the one to blame.

But you were trying to help

spring.

If I hadn’t been fooling

around with that stupid spring

machine, we would’ve been

finished days ago.

And none of this would’ve

happened.

Wait a minute, Briar.

That’s it.

Your spring machine.

It’s no use, Rupert.

The machine was a complete

failure like me.

No, Briar, failure is giving

up.

You have to try.

For Nutwood Forest.

BRIARScrewdriver?

RUPERTScrewdriver.

BRIARWrench?

RUPERTWrench.

Rupert, give me a hand.

(Both grunting)

Ah, there.

All we can do now is hope for

the best.

Oh, well.

Here goes.

(Whirring)

What’s happening, Briar?

Oh, no!

Something’s gone wrong again.

Oh!

It’s going to explode!

Run!

Ah!

Ooh!

What?

Let go of me!

(Grunting)

Rupert!

(Both grunting)

Whoa!

It worked!

(Birds chirping)

What?

Raggedy!

What happened?

You did it!

You brought spring to Nutwood.

It’s wonderful!

No, no, not wonderful.

Wasn’t what Raggedy tried to do.

Wanted to help friend.

Everywhere flowers blooming.

Trees blossoming.

Spring makes Raggedy itch.

(Laughing)

ERINSpring has sprung!

(Laughing)

This is wonderful!

I don’t have to eat my hat after

all.

How on earth did you do it?

Amazing.

Your machine; it really works.

I can see it now.

This is going to be the way of

the future.

Whoa!

You mean it was going to be.

Can’t you build another one?

No.

And even if I could I’m still

not sure if it would work.

Briar, if you did it once

you can do it again.

I mean...

I most certainly can.

That’s the spirit.

I’m awarding you your full

apprenticeship.

Briar, as of this moment you’re

a full fledged imp of spring.

Congratulations, Briar.

Go away!

Leave Raggedy alone!

Now if you’ll excuse me.

There’s something I must do.

Bye, Rupert.

I’ll be looking for you next

spring.

Go now, get!

You heard me.

Get away from tree.

Raggedy sleeps days.

Not be kept awake by happy

chirping.

(Laughing)

Rupert’s caused enough trouble.

Bees, birds, flowers, leaves.

Green everywhere.

Eeek!

Rupert!

Not to sneak on Raggedy.

Rupert always sneak on Raggedy.

Not nice.

Not nice.

I’m sorry.

I didn’t mean to scare you.

I just wanted to say thanks for

all you did.

You know, if you’d like, I could

help you trim back some of these

flowers.

Oh, I guess Raggedy have to

learn to live with itching.

I’m sure when Erin finds out

how you’ve helped, she'll want

to thank you herself.

Oh, great!

Imp friends, they come visit

every day?

Oh, I don’t think so.

Oh, no?

Oh, I mean, good!

Raggedy got enough visitors

already.

What Raggedy need is peace and

quiet.

Not friends.

Well, maybe I should leave

then.

Maybe Rupert come visit

Raggedy again.

Help chase birds away?

Oh, I’ll come for a visit,

Raggedy.

But I think you’re stuck with

those two.

(Laughing)

No, no!

Too many friends for one day.

Oh, no.

This is Raggedy’s home.

Go away!

Ah, spring.

Sunshine.

Fresh air.

What else could a bear need?

Oh!

(All laughing)

And the pass goes over to

Rupert Bear!

Over here, Rupert!

Let’s make teams.

I want to be Captain.

I want to be Goalie.

I wanted to be the Goalie!

I’ll play forward!
