Inspector Gadget here,
swimming my way down under,
as we splash into the case
of awesome Australia.
There's a lot to explore
so let's pack our boomerangs
and go, go, Gadget
field trip.
Here we are
on the massive island continent
known as Australia.
It's the largest island
in the world
or the smallest continent,
depending on how you look at it.
Go, go, Gadget map.
Aha! Just as I suspected.
Australia is down here,
below the equator.
Maybe that's why
they call it "down under."
Plus, it sounds a lot better
than "stuck beneath."
When you think of Australia,
you probably think
of these guys...
They're only found
in this part of the world.
Or maybe these...
Bounce to mind.
But Australia
is home to a lot more
than just cute animals.
Australia has lush rain forests,
long, beautiful beaches,
tall, towering mountains,
and wide-open deserts.
But the real mysteries
lie down under the surf.
So let's go, go,
Gadget swim fins
and investigate Australia's
hidden underwater world.
Would you believe
this is the world's
tallest turtle hurdle?
Would you believe the most
outrageous oyster obstacle?
How about the most massive
flounder boundary?
Actually, this is Australia's
great barrier reef...
The world's largest
formation
made up
of living organisms.
The great barrier reef
is made of coral,
and coral is made
from the skeletons
of thousands of tiny
marine animals called...
My keen detective sense
tells me
that one of the best ways
to research
the roaming reefs
is aboard
a glass-bottom boat.
In this very clever craft,
you can stare at all
the weird fish and creatures
under the water,
without getting
your Gadgets wet.
Well, it's time to leave
the world's largest coral reef
and set a course to examine
the world's largest pearls.
Wonder if they have
the world's largest Gadgets?
This is where Australia's
huge pearls are farmed.
Some of these pearls are worth
over 50,000 american clams--
uh, dollars,
and that's for
just one pearl.
Let's explore.
Hold onto your test tubes,
because we're aboard
a floating laboratory
where the famous
south sea pearls are cultivated.
"cultivating"
means giving mother nature
a helping hand.
If you have a plant,
you cultivate it
by watering it,
making sure it's clean,
and providing
enough light and soil.
These oysters are treated
with the same kind of care.
Technicians ensure
that they have enough food,
are regularly cleaned,
and well looked after.
An ordinary pearl is formed
when a grain of sand
or something else
gets under an oyster shell
and irritates it.
I hate when that happens.
The oyster protects itself
from the annoying
grain of sand
by forming a shiny coat
around it.
After a couple of years,
this shiny coat
is built up and up and up
until it's a shiny pearl.
When you cultivate a pearl,
you just make it easier
for the oyster
to do what it does naturally.
Sand doesn't always work its way
into the oyster's shell.
These scientists
get the pearl process started
by prying the oysters open
and placing a tiny, round piece
of mussel shell inside.
The oysters are then placed
in these cages
and put into the warmest,
most comfortable spots
in the south sea.
After 2 years of pampering,
it's time for the oyster
to pay up
with that perfect pearl.
Technicians pry open
the oyster shells
and poke inside.
If the process
was a success,
the oyster offers up
a large, beautiful pearl,
a miracle of nature
helped along
by the wonders of science.
When we come back,
we're going to meet
some ferocious crocodiles
and search
the bottom of the ocean
for a lost treasure.
But first, this Inspector Gadget
field trip fact:
did you know
that a single strand
of giant pearls
like this one
was sold at a famous
auction house in london?
It holds the record
for the most expensive
string of pearls in history,
selling for...
Wowsers.
I hope that includes
a nifty carrying case.
Inspector Gadget here,
back on the case
in awesome Australia.
Wowsers!
We're going
on a treasure hunt.
Hang on.
Go, go, Gadget copter.
a ship called the...
Led by legendary...
Went out on a sea voyage
and never came back.
Although the captain
and some of his crew
made it to safety,
the ship was a goner.
The h.m.s. pandora
was sent to look
for the wreckage of the bounty,
and, you guessed it,
missed it by that much.
Like the bounty,
the pandora never returned.
The case was finally cracked
when the pandora
was found here
on the ocean floor.
It seems the case wasn't
the only thing that was cracked.
Apparently, the bottom
of the ship cracked
when it scraped alongside
our old friend,
the great barrier reef.
You can bet pandora's chief
had a beef with that reef.
Today, divers
using special equipment
are bringing the wreckage up
from the bottom
of the ocean floor.
Although
there was no treasure
aboard this mighty vessel,
finding the ship
is a treasure in itself.
Just down the coast
is another treasure,
but the loot is more
of the snapping variety.
Let's investigate.
Wowsers!
This is
one part of Australia
where you really
gotta watch your fingers.
This is the Crocodylus Park
Crocodile Research Center
in Darwin, Australia.
Uh, hi, fellas.
I'll just stand over here...
Way over here.
These crocodiles are some
of the largest reptiles
on earth.
What is a reptile?
A reptile is a...
...that usually has a
protective, scaly trench coat--
uh, scaly outer skin.
A reptile
is called cold-blooded
because its body temperature
changes with the temperature
outside.
So if it's too cold,
the reptile
moves somewhere warmer,
and if it's too hot outside,
it moves somewhere cooler.
Wowsers!
Looks like feeding time,
and I'm the guest of honor.
So before these crocs
turn me into a bionic buffet,
we'd better say "good day"
to our new friends
at the Crocodylus Park
Crocodile Research Center.
Let's make a run for it.
Go, go, Gadget legs.
Ah, I'm out of breath,
and we're out of time.
I hope our field trip
through Australia
was something you could
really sink your teeth into.
We've seen
enormous, shiny pearls,
a giant living reef,
a mysterious sunken ship,
and crocs
with snapping teeth.
Until next time.
Go, go, Gadget field trip.
Inspector Gadget here
on an intriguing treasure hunt
in the warm waters
off the Florida keys.
I wonder why I feel
like such a small fish
in a big pond?
Probably because I am.
Hmm...
If these are the...
Then where
are the Florida locks?
For that matter, I don't see
any doors here either.
It's time to investigate
this curious place.
Go, go, Gadget locksmith.
My impeccable
detective instincts
and this tourist brochure
tell me the Florida keys
aren't keys at all.
They're actually
thousands of little islands
which are strung together,
reaching over 150 miles
off the southern tip of Florida.
The islands
have fun names like...
And...
Having the word "key"
in the name
seems to be the key.
I'm getting
a little keyed up myself.
I think I should move on.
Many of the keys
are connected
by a 113-mile-long
overseas highway
with 43 bridges.
It's like
connecting the dots
except you connect the keys.
One bridge is almost
Wowsers.
It's time
to go, go to key largo,
the biggest key
in the whole key chain.
[dolphin squeaking,
clicking]
wowsers. according
to my Gadget dolphin dictionary,
this dolphin is saying that
I need to improve
my snorkeling skills.
And who better to teach me
than man's best
underwater friend?
After all, dolphins are
the dogies of the sea.
Though the newspaper
gets a little soggy
when they fetch it.
At dolphins plus
in key largo,
you can actually swim,
frolic, tickle, pet,
and play with the sea's
friendliest mammals.
Now this is what I call
interspecies interaction.
You can see for yourself
how these air breathing,
fun loving sea animals
are a lot like humans.
They even talk to each other
by making pulsing,
squeaking,
and clicking sounds.
[dolphin squeaks, clicks]
would you believe
a dolphin can take a breath
and swim down 1,000 feet?
Would you believe he can sing
the star spangled banner
without taking a breath?
How about inflating
a small balloon?
Bye-bye dolphins,
and thanks for the fish.
It's time to snorkel over
to key largo's
one of a kind underwater
laboratory.
Scott carpenter's...
...in key largo
is the only place
in the world
where you could
spend the night underwater
and learn to be
an amateur aquanaut.
Aquanaut is a...
There's an astronaut
named...
...who's also an aquanaut.
Scott carpenter believes
that outer space
and inner space--
or life under water--
are equally mysterious
and equally
difficult places to breathe.
He even spoke with fellow
astronauts
while they were
on the space shuttle
and he was under water.
Astronaut: right now,
we're over the pacific ocean.
In about 15 minutes,
we'll be directly
overhead of Florida
where I understand, uh,
you're a few fathoms
under the ocean.
Scott carpenter: that's right.
That's an environment
that you're
very familiar with.
Gadget: at scott carpenter's
man in the sea program,
eager trainees can be found
piloting perilous
one person submarines,
submerging
in treacherous currants
in old-fashioned
diving bells,
performing hair raising
experiments
beneath the briny deep,
and loving it.
And here's an Inspector Gadget
field trip fact:
the name "Florida keys"
is actually a mistake.
When the spaniards settled
Florida in the 1500's,
they called the area
"cayos," meaning...
But a hard appearing
english speaking mapmaker
wrote "keys" down instead.
It's a pre-typewriter typo.
Stay tuned for more underwater
antics when we return.
Welcome back
to the Florida keys.
Time for a little underwater
sea camping on the keys.
Wonder what tunes they gargle
around the campfire
when they
roast squid weenies?
Voila. it's out of the water
and into...
It's the world's only
underwater hotel.
The hotel is named
after jules verne,
author of the famous book,
20,000 leagues under the sea.
Jules undersea lodge
will have to settle for...
Or...
Hmm. 2 bedrooms,
a tv, vcr,
a kitchen, and a phone...
And check out
the thick porthole windows.
Now I know what
my pet goldfish feels like.
Man: hello. I'd like
to order 2 subs
to the jules verne
underwater lodge.
Gadget: now that's a real
submarine sandwich.
Periscope not included.
All this undersea life
wet my appetite
for the real treasure
of the deep.
There's gold
in them thar waters.
Let's head for the waters
of key west.
Go, go, Gadget
roller-skates.
When you get to key west,
stop.
You can't
go any farther south
in the continental
united states.
I guess that's why
that sign's behind me.
Go, go, Gadget scuba gear.
Wowsers.
We found the treasure...
Or they found the treasure.
I know with
my keen detective skills
I could have helped.
Led by master treasure hunter...
A team of divers found more
than a king's ransom
of wet wealth
on the bottom
of the ocean floor
near Florida.
Many of these items are
on display
at the mel fisher maritime
heritage center in key west.
over 1,000 silver bars,
gold chains
up to 60 feet long.
They also found
millions of dollars worth
of emeralds
and gorgeous Gadgets
that were
part of the treasure trove
of the sunken Atocha
that sunk off
the coast of Florida
in 1622.
The...
Were part of a Spanish fleet
devastated by a hurricane
in the Florida straits.
Missed key west
by that much.
The galleons were
brimming with treasures
collected in the new world.
Here is a rusted handle
and its rusted sword.
I don't know what happened
to the rusted swordsman.
Once it's all cleaned up,
it will look like this.
Wowsers.
The treasures
collected so far
are worth more than...
Which will
buy a lot of fish food.
Well, I hope you had
a great time
diving with the dolphins,
savoring the subs,
and trapping the treasures
in the Florida keys.
Until next time,
keep the algae
out of your snorkel,
and go, go, Gadget
field trip.
