animals

okey-dokey that's one backpack one pair

of binoculars and an extra large box of

phyto snacks

can you carry all that or would you like

a doggy bag

did you have to slobber all over it

starting a new business henry it's

called henry's mountain tours our first

expedition is in search of the

mysterious yeti

you mean the legendary two-legged

creature of the mountains which most

scientists say doesn't exist science

schmidts they say that about a lot of

things but look

here's a postcard of bigfoot

too bad he stepped on the camera

and here's one of the loch ness monster

you wouldn't believe how muddy those

locks get

uh

aliens

don't tell me thumb in the lens

i know what you're thinking but there

really is a yeti i saw it on

mysteries of the mountains

i even taped it

there he is again

it was on tv so it must be real

[Music]

oops rewind

there

is that a yeti or what

it's hard to say just what it is oh yeah

who made you the expert on mountain

animals anyway well i do know a thing or

two about the subject

let me explain from a distance the

mountains look like they might be

unbearable to live in

but when you actually get there

there are plenty of bears

and a whole lot more

there are lots of different animals to

be found far far above sea level

from the hedgehogs of the high plateaus

to the bighorn sheep of the sheer rocky

faces

and wherever you go you find the animals

are perfectly adapted to thrive in these

extreme conditions

yats are so well adapted to mountain

life they can no longer live at low

altitudes i could adapt to a view like

that it's beautiful up here

i didn't know you loved the mountains

henry oh yeah i've been adapting to them

for days now

henry it's taken thousands of years for

these japanese macaques to adapt to the

mountains they've had to develop special

food finding skills and thick furry

coats just to stay alive

good for them but i don't have that kind

of time

all right i know these mountains like

the back of my hand so i'll be the

leader

ah what's that

the back of your hand henry i knew that

now follow me

i'll keep my eyes out for that old yeti

see anything

not yeti

henry how are we supposed to follow you

up there

nobody said mountaineering was easy

henry don't worry about it

but it's dangerous

what do you mean it isn't dangerous

it looks like you could use a helping

hoof from one of these guys henry who

mountain rescue

no mountain goat

these guys are the original rock

climbers

thanks to their special gripping hooves

they can travel to the top of the

steepest mountains even when they're

covered in ice and snow

excuse me but they're not exactly up in

the clouds there

they're still risking life and limb

these rock faces are soft and crumbly

one false step and it's straight into

that raging river

wow

so why are they there

believe it or not they've come all the

way from their mountaintop homes just to

lick the salt deposits found down here

just for a little salt

how far would they go for the pepper the

moon

scientists aren't sure why they do it

some think the salt may be a necessary

supplement to their meager alpine diets

or maybe they just like it didn't anyone

tell them that too much salt is bad for

your health especially if it makes you

fall over whoops careful now stumbling's

no joke for a mountain goat henry oh i

can see that one false move and you're a

bottom of the mountain

mountain beaver found here in the

forested slopes of the pacific northwest

and this one has its own business to

attend to what business is that the leaf

cleaning business

actually it eats leaves but wait keep

quiet

there's trouble

afoot a mountain lion

or puma or cougar i'm never sure which

they're all right the mountain lion has

one of the widest ranges of any animal

in all of north and south america it

gets called different things in

different places

and do they owe their success to the

consumption of mountain beaver meat

apparently not this cat would rather

hunt for deer

it's all right beef

come on down the mountain beaver isn't a

real beaver at all it's a different kind

of rodent it doesn't build dams but digs

a maze of tunnels which it uses to store

food

which makes that a tv dinner

but now our top story

the hills are alive with the sound of

brewing

since it was discovered that the first

person to climb the world's highest

mountain

was a cow

we can now reveal the truth about

hillary the milky mountaineer

hillary got her start on the island of

jersey where she used to climb to the

top of everything she could

later she visited the alps while the

other cows were sliding down the

mountain

hillary was climbing up it

she made her first attempt on mount

everest soon after but gave up when

frostbite turned her milk into ice cream

finally with nothing but a cut to chew

on and a sheet for a sherpa she made it

to the top

coming down she said was the hardest

part

hillary what a hero thanks to her skill

spirit and

other determination

you think they bought it

you couldn't even give it away henry

let's

let me see if i can help i have always

relied on the kindness of narrators

then you'll be glad to know that there

is a certain kind of cattle that lives

in the mountains around everest really

what's it called a yak a what a yak what

yak yak yeah would you quit yakking and

get on with the story ah

okay

yaks live high up here in the himalayan

mountains and have long thick coats to

protect them from freezing temperatures

now because yaks are so good at living

at high altitudes they were domesticated

as pack animals by the nepalese people

or sherpas have you heard of sherpas i

certainly have

the sherpas have carved out a niche for

themselves as trades people carrying

goods and ferrying travelers up and over

the highest and coldest mountains on

earth

it looks like it's the yaks who are

doing all the carrying you're right

the sherpas rely totally upon them to

get around

it may not look like the most agile of

climbers but the sure-footed yak can

carry huge loads over the rock and ice

of these high mountain passes

or should that be yeah cake

in fairness the yaks do benefit by being

cared for watered and fed

well

you know what they say

no i don't know what they say

and i'll scratch yours oh brother

spaghetti i hear they love it they may

be rare but no yeti can resist turning

up for a mountain meal al fresco

isn't this getting just a little bit

ridiculous don't laugh my customers will

want their money back if they don't see

a yeti now where was that parmesan

oh no

see see the yeti's not so rare after all

rare is one thing henry mythology is

something else you see nobody can be

sure that yeti has ever really existed

don't say that do you want to wreck my

business

if it's mountain rarities you're after

you should come to see the volcano

rabbits of mexico

volcano rabbits you better come quick

though these rabbits are dying out fast

why do they erupt stand back volcano

rabbit ready to blow

the mountains that surround mexico city

are all old volcanoes

towering some seven thousand feet above

the city they ought to be safe havens

for wildlife like the volcano rabbit

nobody can touch them up there right

wrong i'm afraid

there are 25 million people living down

there in the city and only a few hundred

rabbits left up in the mountains

the problem is that all those people put

a lot of pressure on the surrounding

countryside

meaning that the rabbit's natural

habitats are being destroyed

the bunch grass is being burned to clear

the land for grazing to feed the

ever-growing population

fire sound the alarm there are rabbits

in there

the volcano rabbit is the most ancient

rabbit species on earth

it can't dig holes like other rabbits

instead it relies on the bunch grass for

shelter

there's not much shelter here anymore

although the ground has been burned

it doesn't take long for new green

shoots to sprout up

this means excellent grazing for cattle

and sheep but sadly it could be the end

of the line for an

ancient species of rabbit what a waste

well listen to this up in the himalayas

there lives one of nature's most

beautiful and noble creatures

why thank you i'm talking about the snow

leopard that is a nice coach he's got

there

the coat's been its undoing it's so

wonderful that it's prized by hunters

and fur wearers alike

how dare they very little is known about

wild

snow leopards because they live in such

remote mountain areas and are very shy

we do know the wild population is in

decline which is why breeding programs

in zoos like this one are so important

as well as keeping the leopard numbers

up zoos help us to learn about the

animal

so we can protect them properly in the

wild i used to think

zoos were all about hot dogs and popcorn

but they're actually life savers

Golden Gecko

[Music]

and now ladies and gentle lizards it's

time for henry's amazing golden gecko

awards

[Music]

the winners of my all-time best amazing

mountain animals

are in

third place this gigantic bird of prey

can soar and soar

without ever getting sore the andean

condor

and in second place they're so into

mountain climbing

if they had names they'd all be called

cliff

the mountain goat but tonight

we go up close and personal with the big

hairy hillbilly himself

the mountain gorilla coming to us direct

from the mountainous virunga national

park

right smack dab in the center of africa

[Music]

they can usually be found hanging out

together in tightly

knit groups

they like playing a lot especially the

young but the one past time that they

all enjoy

is giving each other a really good

grooming

much like human beings mama gorilla puts

a lot of tender loving care into

bringing up babies

big daddy silverback is a real sweetie

too

but he can sure act tough when he needs

to

these big boys of the jungle can weigh

in at up to 300 kilograms

and can snap a tree with a single hand

gorillas love a tasty meal at the salad

bar and except for a few ants and

termites

they tend to steer clear of the meat

dishes

with an appetite like that they have to

cover a lot of ground to find

all the food they need this endless

quest for the next meal

sometimes brings them into direct

contact with humans

farmers have found crops like bananas

grow well here

and gorillas have found that bananas

taste great

gorillas are profoundly intelligent and

they inspire

all and almost everyone who meets them

and so

with the utmost admiration and reset

this golden gecko

is yours

Henry the Dinosaur

oh boy oh boy

henry calm down easy for you to say

you're a pink dinosaur with yellow spots

look at me i'm turning into a big

chocolate donut

i can't bear it i've got trees in my

ears

you have not you're just seeing things

you've got

altitude sickness

the air is so thin up here there's not

much oxygen in it

if you climb too quickly you can start

to feel ill

even a little bit crazy you don't think

i'm

acting kind of funny to you yeah

i've got a yeti

well i guess some animals are better at

dealing with high altitudes than others

we can't all be like the south american

hill star

hill star you must mean the hollywood

hills

don't you just love them the hill star

is a hummingbird that lives way up in

the highlands of ecuador

every night the temperature drops below

freezing but the hill star has an

amazing survival strategy

it can slow its body systems way down

just enough to stay alive

but once the sun rises it's up an atom

bathing in fresh melt water

if that doesn't wake you up nothing will

and then what it must be breakfast time

for birds anytime is the right time for

a meal

it takes an incredible amount of food to

keep a bird as big as this

andy and condor flying high i know the

feeling

i get so hungry sometimes i could eat a

horse

same with the condor and that's exactly

what this one's going to eat

a dead horse that is stop

that's just an expression condors and

vultures are scavengers

they feed on dead animals called carrion

well

then i guess he can carry on in that

case

other scavengers join the condors at the

carcass which will feed them all for

many days

scavenger is the name scavenging's the

game

you rang that's the caracara henry

it doesn't have the strength to get at

the horse flesh itself

so it waits for the condor to do the

hard work for it

can i have two horsey burgers to go

in the clifftop nest

daddy's got a special treat for you

thanks dad that smells disgusting

just the way we like it hush now my

darlings

we don't want the neighbors to get

jealous

speaking of neighbors who should be

building a nest right below the caracara

but our old friend the hill star

it takes a lot of searching to collect

all the materials it needs

here it's actually taking some of the

sheep's wool straight out of the

caracara's nest

it didn't seem to carracara care

it's not a big deal the hill star only

takes a little

and if she's smart she can knit herself

a sweater

for the cold nights ahead

The Yeti

at last you've made it to the top henry

yep

if i don't find a yeti here there's

nowhere left to look

and just think of all the refunds i'd

have to shell out

oh no i can't see a thing this is

abominable snow man

i can't move

hang in there henry i'll get help

what's that is that you

ah the yeti coming to get me

relax henry it's the saint bernard i

told you i was going to get help

thank you thank you thank you maybe i

didn't meet the yeti

but who knew i'd make an amazing

mountain animal out of one of my own

customers
