hey everyone I want you to meet a new

friend of mine she started school with

me last week this is Patty Patty these

are my friends on the right here's

Kathy nice to meet you and standing

beside me on my ride is my sister Tina

hello Patty hi everybody Lucy's told me

a lot about you already why are you

carrying that cane Patty I'm blind and

sometimes I use it to help me find my

way around what does that mean you're

blind my eyes can't see things like

yours do what can you see I can tell

when it's light out and when it's dark

but I can't see things like trees or

clouds or any view I'm sorry Patty oh

it's okay you don't have to feel bad for

me I'm happy to make new friends

look did I hear somebody say new friends

I love making new friends Patty this is

our friend Barney I'm pleased to meet

you Patty hello Barney you sound like

you're really tall well

um you see Patty um Barney's a little

different than the rest of us yeah he's

a dinosaur a dinosaur I've never met a

dinosaur before would you like to touch

me with your hands and make a picture of

me in your mind Patty

I usually don't touch people's faces but

I am curious about a dinosaur okay then

take a good look with your fingers

oh you're very soft Barney boy thank you

he has a big tummy that tickles petty

you're very tall Barney he has a square

nose and a large mouth all the better

for smiling and eating healthy snacks he

has a tail and two strong legs and three

toes on each foot which makes it hard

for me to play This Little Piggy

you're not like anyone I've ever met

before Barney oh this year is a

beautiful day to make new friends

uh Patty if you can't see how do you

know it's a beautiful day I just used

some of my other senses besides seeing I

can feel the warm sun on my face and the

Cool Breeze when it hits me and I can

smell the spring flowers and I can hear

the leaves wrestling the trees and the

birds singing Just Like You Do Well I

never thought of that hey I'm studying

about the five senses right now and I

can show you all about them in the

classroom oh will you go ahead Patty and

I want to listen to a tape of one of our

favorite groups we'll catch you later

over to my soda fountain for a glass of

five senses fizzy fruit juice oh come on

all your senses when you drink it can

you guess how here Michael why don't you

take the top off the bottle

I can hear the sound the bottle makes

when you open it that's one of our

senses Michael I think it's time to fill

up those glasses

can see the fizzy fruit juice when you

pour it yup number two

and I can smell the orange juice it does

smell like oranges right again that's

number three well let's see hearing and

smelling but what's the fourth sense you

use

the bubbles touch my nose and tickle it

that's right Kathy touch is the fifth

sense why don't we learn more about our

sense of touch by finding things in the

classroom that feel different to us

Santa's funny Barney now it feels soft

this Cactus feels sharp and pointy

this rock is smooth but it's also hard

this starfish feels bumpy and rough but

this countertop feels smooth

and I know Zippity feels furry

this chair is hard but the cushion soft

that's right Tina but Barney do you know

what I like to touch the most no Kathy

what things that are squishy and sloppy

when I smell it popping yummy

yummy and my class left his lunch bag

with a tuna fish sandwich in it for

three days you

sometimes we call these finger foods see

if you can guess what the food is by its

read if you can't see

I have a braille book I feel the little

bumps on the paper they tell me what the

letters are the book also has letters

like you read so my mom can read the

book to my sister too

I haven't learned to read stories yet

would you like me to read this one to

you oh yeah

Kitty caught a caterpillar Kitty caught

a snail Kitty caught a turtle by its

tiny turtle tail Kitty caught a cricket

with a sticky bit of thread she tried to

catch a bumblebee the bee caught her

instead I like that story Patty thanks

stories to each other let's do it again

there are so many things to see around

you lots of pretty colors to look at

how many colors can you find in your

house

and isn't it fun to touch things and

feel how different they are

scratchy things

and Squishy things oh

you can have lots of fun using your

senses of taste and smell to guess your

favorite foods

don't you love how a fresh Apple slice

smells

try to use all your senses every day

don't forget that some people may not be

able to see

or hear or do other things like you can

or maybe they just do them differently
