( Thunder crashing )

It's really coming down, eh, aurora?

It sure is!

Either it's raining

Or my waterbed's sprung a leak!

Nice weather, if you happen to be a catfish.

Sock!

Plato: get down from there!

A tree is the worst place to be

During an electrical storm.

This is the safest tree in the forest.

It's never been hit by lightning.

( Thunder crashing )

( Leaves rustling )

( Yowling )

Watch out!

Of course

There's a first time for everything.

( Birds chirping )

( Gasps )

Look at the rainbowl!

What a mess!

You know, somebody ought to clean that up.

Sock, you're absolutely right.

Come on, everybody.

If we pull out the debris and stack it over there

We can... Sock?!

Let me know when you're done, okay?

( Yawning )

And hold it down.

I think I'm nocturnal.

( Sighs )

Aren't you going to help?

Me? Drag trees around?

( Chuckling )

Not in my job description.

Bobcats are supposed to be wily hunters

Not common laborers.

I give up.

Agh!

Whoa!

So much for going swimming.

Hello, zach. If we all pitch in

We can clear this mess out

And still swim.

Yeah. Jump in!

You bet.

( Laughing )

Man! How do beavers stand it?

Sock: attaboy, zachster!

Maybe they'll get off my back.

Sock, how come you're not helping?

Sock is still struggling

With the concept

Of working for a common goal.

She means he's a lazy bum.

( Splash )

Hey, can I help it if cats don't swim?

Why should I care

If the rainbowl's cleared out or not?

He forgets how much he likes to drink

From the stream below it.

Anyway, zach's here.

You don't need me to do the job.

( Grunting )

According to rudyard kipling

That's what the first camel thought.

In fact, that's how

The camel got his hump.

When the world was new

And animals started

To work for man, there was a camel.

This camel was idle

Most 'scruciatingly idle.

( Gulps )

( Snoring )

On that first monday morning

The camel had a visitor--

The horse.

( English accent ): I say

Do get up.

There's work to do.

It's hunt day

And we're one steed short.

There's a good bean.

Humph.

You needn't take that tone.

I suppose I shall have to ask the crocodile

Although his legs are so short

And if the hunt's not over by lunchtime

He does tend to snap a bit.

Dog: fetch!

Here, boy.

Bring me the stick! Bring me the stick!

( Dog barking )

You're supposed to bring it back.

That stick

Belonged to the man.

Now I got to pay for it.

Sticks don't grow on trees.

Yuck!

Who do you think you are, lying around all day?

There's fetching

To do, not to mention begging

Sitting up and shaking hands.

All you do is roll over and play dead.

( Growling )

( Whistle )

( Loud whistle )

Man: here, boy!

Uh-oh.

It's the man calling.

( Barking )

Humph.

( Country accent ): what in tarnation?

Hey, bubba! Move it.

Your carcass is parked in the middle

Of the north forty

And I got a-lots of plowing to do.

Say... How'd you like to pitch in and do

A lick of plowing yourself?

I'm getting plumb tuckered out.

Humph!

Well, you can't say I didn't

Ask you politely.

Huh?

Humph.

( Snoring )

At the end of the day, the man called his horse

His dog and his ox into his palace.

Well done, you three.

You've accomplished quite a lot

What with the world being new and all.

Good work!

Begging your pardon, o man, sir

But we could do even more

If your camel would help out.

The thing without the hump?

Ah, yes, I know.

Very lazy, that one.

Not much to be done about it.

You three have to work harder

To make up for him.

That camel drives me crazy.

How could somebody with that nose get stuck-up?

The blighter only knows

One word-- humph!

Shh! Here comes

You-know-humph.

I say!

Smack-dab in my earl grey.

Waitress!

Dog: waitress? That's no waitress.

It's djinn!

My, the service is fast here.

Do I look like a waitress in this suit?

My card.

Djinn of all desserts?

We didn't order dessert.

That's deserts, fido.

Djinn of all deserts.

I worked my way up from the mail room

And now I'm on top.

Watch this.

Now, just hold on here.

Are you magical or something?

What was your first clue?

I say!

You might be just the person to help us.

Is it right for one animal to be idle

While the rest of us work?

What with the world being all new and all

And so much to be done.

Idle? One of my clients?

I don't think so.

Then what about that camel?

Won't fetch. Won't trot.

Won't plow.

And says nothing but "humph!"

Humph?

If word of this got around

I could never eat lunch in this town again.

Fellas, you came to the right woman.

I'll handle that lazy so-and-so.

This is on me-- expense account.

I say, be careful.

He spits. Which reminds me... Waitress!

Wow!

That was close.

Man, this sandstorm thing is wrecking my 'do.

I got to start taking taxis.

Hey, camel.

You with the nose!

Humph!

What's this I hear about you not working

And me losing ten percent

On account of your 'scruciating idleness?

Humph!

He said it.

They said he said it

But I can't believe he said it to me.

It's time for camel training.

I've got a plan for him.

Listen, honey, no more "humphs," okay?

It's starting to get on my nerves.

Humph!

That does it!

Here you go.

Huh?

( Confused muttering )

Hey, I told you not to say "humph" anymore.

It was very irritating.

Now you've got your own humph to carry around

And I'll tell you

Something else-- you're going to work.

But how can I

With this heavy humph on my back?

That's the beauty part.

Since you made the other animals work

Three days without your help

That humph will let you

Work three days straight without eating.

What do you think?

Don't say it.

And from that day to this

The camel wears a humph.

Nowadays we call it a "hump," not to hurt his feelings.

Boy, that camel sure was mean--

Making everybody else do the work.

( Laughing )

Yeah. Remind you of anybody?

Hmph. I don't know why you're all picking on me.

( Both grunting )

The problem is

There's too much junk here.

It doesn't matter how many folks pitch in

You'll never get it cleaned up.

I know what you mean.

It's sort of like trying to break

This bundle of sticks over your knee.

Yeah, that's it.

There's too many.

( Grunting )

Can't do it.

( Yells )

I get it.

When there's too many sticks

There's no use trying.

Good point.

Sock, that's not what I meant at all.

Now, watch.

We're like these sticks.

One alone may be weak

But a whole bunch together are strong.

See?

She's right, sock.

That's why we need everyone to pitch in

So we can clean up the rainbowl.

Come on, sock.

Be a pal.

Yeah, come on, sock.

Oh, all right.

Now you're talking.

Sock it to 'em.

Yeah! Yeah!

Hmm.

Ah, got to rest.

So tired.

( Panting )

How long have I been at this?

About six seconds.

See? That's the problem with work.

It's so boring.

Sock, it's all in how you look at it.

Mark twain once wrote a story about a boy

Named tom sawyer.

Tom didn't care for work any more than you do, sock.

He especially hated schoolwork.

Halt! Who enters sherwood forest without my pass?

Guy of guisborne wants no man's pass.

En garde.

Take that. Blackguard!

( Laughing )

A-ha!

Take that.

On your feet.

I dare you.

Take that.

Dang it, joe, you gots to fall down dead.

I don't want to fall down dead.

You fall down dead.

I can't fall down dead.

I'm robin hood.

Well, it's plain mean

To make me fall down dead if you won't.

Say...

Here's what.

You fall down dead

Then I'll be sheriff of nottingham.

You can lam me with that quarterstaff

Or even k*ll me.

Okay.

En garde.

Take that.

( Groaning )

Robin of locksley

You've k*lled me.

( Bell rings )

Oh, no!

Jiminy. School's out.

( Children chattering and laughing )

Here, joe.

Thomas sawyer, I'm so sorry

You and mr. Harper

Couldn't join us today

Especially since you had a visitor, tom.

Aunt polly!

Laws-a-mercy

But you're full of the old scratch.

Well, if you couldn't do

Your schoolwork today

You can do a man's work tomorrow.

I don't care a lick if it is saturday.

Saturday morning came

And there was a song in every heart...

Almost.

This was tom's punishment for preferring robin hood

To reading, writing, and 'rithmetic--

Yards of board fence, nine feet high.

And all of it needed to be whitewashed.

( Sighs )

Tom thought of all the fun he'd planned

And his sorrows multiplied.

( Sighs )

I wonder if I could pay somebody to take over.

That would only buy me a half hour.

Besides, where would I find anybody

Fool enough to take this job?

Ding. Ship to starboard.

Ding-ding. Ship to starboard.

Come around there.

( Imitating steamboat chugging )

My, you're up a stump, ain't you?

Good.

Why, it's you, ben.

I warn't a-noticin'.

I'm going a-swimmin', but I suppose you'd rather work.

What do you call work?

Why, ain't that work?

Maybe it is, maybe it ain't

But it suits tom sawyer.

You don't mean you like it?

Does a boy get to whitewash a fence

Every day?

Watch this.

Say, tom, let me whitewash a little.

Mm... Nah, I oughtn't.

Aunt polly's particular about this fence.

I reckon there ain't one boy in a thousand

That can do it the way

It's got to be done.

Shucks. I'll be just as careful as...

Say, I got an apple.

You want it?

Well...

Okay. Here.

Aw, thanks.

( Chuckling )

Jim: ben, what's that you're doing?

Give me a go at it.

Uh-uh. You go find your own fence to play at.

Tom: hey, fellas, wait.

Hold on, ben.

It don't seem right

For you to have all the fun.

Tom, you can have my piece of glass

To look through.

Yeah? You can have this dead rat

And the string to swing it from.

I'll tell you what, fellas.

Fair is fair.

You can take turns.

Tom had no lack of victims.

Boys came along every little while.

They came to jeer

But stayed to whitewash.

And though he'd started out the day poverty-stricken...

By the middle of the afternoon, tom was rolling in wealth.

That tom sure had the right idea.

What do you mean?

Well, he tricked the other kids.

They did the work, but he had all the fun.

Did he?

( Laughing )

Without trying to

Tom had discovered a great thing--

Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do

And play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.

It's all how you look at it.

And I'll bet all those boys had as good a time that day

As they ever had playing pirate

Or sneaking off to the swimming hole.

Great.

And that fence got three coats of whitewash too.

Sock: maybe painting's fun

But you can't have a good time

Clearing a tree out of a rainbowl.

Are you sure about that?
