No doubt about it, aurora.

Spring is my favorite time of year.

Yes, except for those sudden april showers.

Zach, you don't have to carry me.

Right through that mud?

How can I resist?

Annie: careful.

Whoo.

For cents

I'll carry you across the stream.

What?

You don't...

No.

( Both yell )

( Laughing )

Morning, annie, zach.

Morning, plato.

Need your cave straightened up?

I'll dust it for a couple of dollars.

Zach, what is it with you and money today?

There's this new game I want

But my mom won't give me

An advance on my allowance.

I got to have it now.

How about it, sock?

You could use a good combing.

It's admirable you're willing to work.

But money isn't everything.

Although, there once was a king who thought it was.

I feel a story coming on.

His name was king midas

And his lust for gold was equaled

Only by his impatience to have more of it.

Plato, you need the book.

Aristotle, I know this one.

Please.

I don't carry this around for my health.

Very well. For you.

Whew!

Now, king midas lived a long, long time ago

In ancient greece.

Even though he had more gold than anyone else in the world

It still wasn't enough. Midas wanted more.

While his daughter marigold spent her days in her garden

Which she loved

Midas spent his days in a dark, dank, smelly old dungeon

Where he kept his vast stores of gold.

Hello, my pretty.

Celebrating.

It's alive.

Oh, thank you, father.

From that day on

The only golden things which midas loved

Were the sunshine

The gold of a yellow rose

The golden waters of the river

And the precious gold of his daughter's hair.

Midas did love his daughter more than gold.

Yes, but because of his greed and impatience

His lack of self-discipline

He nearly lost her for good.

Why the long face, zach?

This morning, I loved money

More than my mom.

Hmm. Tell us what happened.

I'll get my own money!

Sometimes... Sometimes I wish

You weren't my mom!

Zach: I didn't really mean it

But I was mad.

Anger makes us do foolish things

Sometimes tragic things.

Follow me.

Once, a famous warrior lost his temper

And regretted it the rest of his life.

Genghis khan was a great mongol leader years ago.

When not leading armies

He hunted with his faithful companion

A trained hawk.

I wouldn't mind a nice drink of water.

Would you?

That was foolish

My friend.

What's gotten into you?

This is my last warning!

I warned you, foolish bird!

Now I'll get my drink.

The water

Is poisoned.

What have I done?

You saved my life, my faithful friend.

In return, I took yours.

For that, I am truly sorry.

He hurt the one

He loved most

But being sorry could not bring back his friend.

He controlled armies

But he couldn't control his temper.

That sounds familiar.

You know, zach

Self-discipline-- controlling your behavior--

Is not easy to learn.

It takes practice.

When I was young

I was so impatient to see the world

I didn't pay attention to the wonders under my nose.

Excuse me!

I don't mean to be rude

But can we get to the point?

It's like they say--

"All good things come to those who wait."

And sometimes

Those who won't wait pay dearly, as in one of my favorite stories

Called the magic thread.

Peter! Peter!

What are you doing?

That's okay, peter.

That's why we're friends.

I'd better be getting home.

I worry about you.

You must work harder in school.

School bores me.

I want to make history, not read it.

Peter, what am I going to do with you?

Marry me, liese... Someday.

But why wait for someday

When someday

Could be today?

Here's the easy way.

What is that?

This is the thread of your life

Unwinding, oh, so slowly.

But if you give it a little tug

You can speed it along.

You'll never have to feel anything bad

Or have to wait for the good.

Just zip, and there you are.

But once you pull the thread out

It can't go back in.

You may not tell anyone about the ball.

If you do, on that day you will die!

Interested?

Yes.

Good. Use it wisely.

( Laughing )

I will.

The next day

Peter dreamed about what he would do

With the magic thread.

Peter!

I am running out of patience.

Conjugate the latin verb vivere.

Peter, you can do it.

I can't. I forgot to study.

Do you have an answer?

Um... I... I...

All right, class, have a good summer.

See you next fall.

What did she say?

School's out, peter.

I hope we can play together sometime this summer.

Bye.

But... But I want us to be older.

I want you to be my girlfriend.

So, any time peter was unhappy, he would pull the string

And suddenly he would be older.

Liese, our last year of school.

Now we can get going with life.

Peter, peter, always so impatient.

Let's just enjoy the moment.

Peter, you promised you'd rake the leaves today.

Here you are. Hurry.

I'll have it done in a flash.

Thanks. Maybe liese could help.

Peter, it'll be fun.

We can make a pile of leaves

And bury each other.

I'll take care of this

Before you can say "winter's here."

And please shovel the front steps too.

Thanks, peter.

Don't worry, mother.

I'll take care of everything.

Whenever anything got difficult

Peter took out the ball of thread

And gave it a tug.

Soon, peter found a reason to pull the string

Just a little, every day, until suddenly school was out.

Summer was over and liese was heading out of town

To attend a university.

I'll miss you too

But it's only for two years.

With your new job as a carpenter

Watch how fast the time goes.

You'll see.

Oh, I know. The time will just fly by.

Bye, peter. I'll write.

See you later.

Bye, liese. Good luck.

Good luck to you too.

What a change!

Peter worked for a builder.

He liked the money

But he was not doing a good job.

Liese!

She can't hear me.

Peter, hurry it up!

All right, I will.

( Gasping )

Peter?

( Groaning )

Peter, are you all right?

( Chuckling ): I'm fine... Just fine.

I now pronounce you

Husband and wife.

Mother! You...

You look so... So...

The word is "old," my dear.

When did this happen?

I know. It seems like only yesterday that you were a boy.

But now you're a businessman with a new wife

A fine little house, and a good life.

Oh, I must go sit down, son.

Seeing how his mother had aged

Peter made a vow never to use the thread again.

After all, everyone said this was the best time of his life.

He didn't want to miss it.

But as time went on, having a baby in the house

Wasn't very easy.

Why won't he stop crying?!

Peter, he's teething.

He hurts.

Peter couldn't keep his promise not to pull the thread.

Suddenly peter found himself in the army

And work really piled up.

And whenever anything got scary

Peter reached for the thread.

Or even when things were good

Peter couldn't resist

Giving the magic thread one more pull.

Children: shut up!

Give that back, it's mine!

I can't think when you're screaming!

Quiet, I say!

What's wrong, peter?

They're only children!

It's just that the new house costs so much

And it's not done!

It will work out, peter.

You have to be patient.

No! I can't! I can't!

Where are you going?

If they were grown

It would be quiet! I could think, i...

You will always have a place to come home to.

You know that, don't you?

We'll miss you.

But you'll do very well at the university.

And so, the last of their children had left home.

It surprised peter how he missed his children.

He had hoped they would grow fast and be out on their own.

Now, he just wishes

He had spent more time with them.

Liese...

She's gone, peter.

Look.

Mother! Liese!

No!

( Sobbing )

You must have pulled a bit too hard

That last time.

You! You did this!

You gave me that cursed ball!

No! It was you who rushed your life along.

Congratulations, peter.

You got your wish.

But now I'm all alone

And I have no memories.

It's all a blur.

Yes! If you had one more wish, what would it be?

To feel joy and pain; to live my life over.

Without the magic thread.

I can do that.

The question is, can you?

Yes! Yes!

Then do it!

( Shattering )

Peter...

Peter, wake up!

Liese! You're here!

Where else would I be?

I had the most awful dream.

Tell me later.

We're late for class.

Are you ready for the test?

Test? No, but I've learned my lesson.

Come on, you can tell me your dream tomorrow.

Yes, tomorrow... I can wait until then.

Oh, that was a story worth waiting for.

I guess I can wait

To get that game.

Remember: he that can have patience

Can have what he will.

Who said that-- some doctor?

Ben franklin.

And as you like to say

"Everything happens in time."

Time to get home.

Hope my mom forgives me.

There's one way to find out.

I know, apologize.

Now.

All: good luck, zach!

Don't you just wish these spring days

Could last forever?

Yes, even if it does rain.

How else do you get rainbows?

It's like that passage in ecclesiastes...

"For everything there is a season

"And a time for every purpose

"Under the heavens.

"A time to keep silence

And a time to speak."
