NARRATOR:Though the great house at Collinwood
looks the same, everything that happens in it
is different this night, for Barnabas Collins
is trapped in a parallel time.
He has entered another time band running concurrently
with ours.
And to his amazement he discovers a Collinwood
ruled by the memory of a dead mistress, Angelique.
And a new bride has entered the house wanting
to find happiness with Quentin,
but instead, finding an enemy she cannot fight.
Where's Quentin, why did he leave?
[ominous instrumental music]
You are not wanted here, now or ever, Angelique.
But it can't be, she's dead.
[eerie instrumental music]
MAGGIE VOICEOVER: Angelique is dead,
she can't have written this.
It's some hideous joke.
Mr. Collins hasn't returned yet?
No, he hasn't.
Perhaps you'd like me to take you to your rooms.
Yes, yes, that would be very good.
You haven't had anything to eat.
No, I wasn't hungry.
I had the luggage taken up.
I trust you'll find your rooms comfortable.
They face the sea.
Did hers?
Angelique's?
No, come with me.
I'm sorry if I did anything wrong.
I simply made the usual arrangements.
They've never upset Mr. Collins before.
[door closing]
BARNABAS: Is your husband back yet?
He won't be, at least not until the Eagle closes.
BARNABAS: The Eagle?
It's a bar in the village.
He spends more time there than here, thank goodness.
I'm not sure that it's wise for me to stay here.
Now that we have the coffin, we'll be safe.
Turn around.
CAROLYN: Will, I...
I said turn around.
Stop.
Carolyn, look.
Carolyn, do you remember?
The silhouette in my book, it's him.
Will, this is Barnabas Collins.
I know that.
BARNABAS: I am a descendant of the Barnabas
that you wrote so brilliantly about.
Oh, oh you've read my book.
BARNABAS: Yes, I came on a pilgrimage to see you.
Well, did you hear that, Carolyn?
This calls for a little drink, eh?
Does it, Will?
Look here, oh you've brought a copy.
What a difference this is going to,
oh my, did my wife tell you how we've been hunting for one?
It's like seeing an old friend.
Oh, oh the way people treat books.
Look, the pages are torn.
Oh, oh not long ago, either.
Oh I wish it were my fingers that were chopped off.
If that book were so important to you,
you wouldn't have lost your last copy.
Oh, Honey, I'm a loser.
You know, some people everything sticks to
like fame and fortune.
Me, well I'm just the opposite.
Hmm, I think I need to keep the bottle.
Huh, come on that's a joke.
Not a very funny one.
Will, Cousin Barnabas was helping me with renting a room.
Rent a room to a relative?
Well that's nonsense.
He wants to pay us money, Will.
WILL: Well, I won't hear of it.
Oh please, I insist.
You'll be doing me a great favor.
See, I have no idea how long I'll be here.
But it would be pleasant to spend the few days
that I do have in the same house that Barnabas
loved so well.
Well, if you put it that way,
but you see I must warn you.
We're a family who likes privacy.
You see, I'm writing a new book.
[laughing]
Well I am, this week definitely.
So you see, I'm going to be pretty busy.
I'll keep out of your way, I promise.
I think that everything's going to work out fine,
just fine.
[dark instrumental music]
Maggie, I don't want you to be angry.
Would you understand if I were.
I don't want you to be.
Quentin, I don't want you to be angry, either.
Why did you run from the room and make that scene?
If you don't tell me what I did wrong
then I'll never know.
It wasn't you, it was me and you've got to accept that.
Me, I was wrong.
But how, how were you wrong?
Now don't ask me that.
MAGGIE: Quentin, we're married.
I have the right to ask you...
Stop it, Maggie, please stop it.
All right Quentin, it's late, we'll just go to bed.
I'm worried about that book.
He's drunk, he'll remember nothing in the morning.
I'm not so sure.
I know him, you must see that.
Guard him carefully, guard me carefully.
I'm in an unfamiliar time without any touchstone.
I'll need all the help I can get.
MAGGIE VOICEOVER: My dear sister.
I didn't bother you with menus for today,
but cook and I have worked out the menus for the week,
if you want to make any changes.
No, I'm sure they're all right.
Oh I think, I wish you would look at them.
They might avoid any unpleasant scene.
All right, I'll be happy to look at them.
MISS HOFFMAN: Did you find your rooms comfortable?
Yes thank you, Miss Hoffman.
Well, if you didn't, there are other suites
you can see and choose from.
MAGGIE: No, it seemed fine to me.
And Mr. Collins?
Yes, I think so.
I thought he might resent the change.
Was her room so different?
It's beautiful, it's the most beautiful room
in the house, I think.
Miss Hoffman,
where is her room?
In the East Wing, of course.
The sun seems so much brighter there.
Is there anything else I can tell you?
Oh, Miss Hoffman, yes.
I was wondering about Daniel.
Seems to me if there's a young boy in the house
you should be able to hear him.
Master Daniel isn't feeling very well today.
Then I'll go and see him.
No, he's resting and shouldn't be disturbed.
Well, well, well, so I see you two
are settling everything, that's good.
Maggie, I have to go to the cannery
for a couple of hours.
Quentin, I...
Now look, I have to go to work.
I've been away too long.
I, I know, but I wanted to, uh,
go over some menus with you.
With me?
[chuckling]
you and Hoffman work that out, huh?
There will be no further mistakes, Mr. Collins.
I'll see you around six.
Now look, why don't you investigate the house
and the rest of the grounds.
There's a lot you haven't seen.
Yes, I know there is.
May I see you for a moment, Mr. Collins?
QUENTIN: Yes, of course.
[ominous instrumental music]
You've seen Daniel?
Yes.
Do you think we should have Dr. Reeves look at him?
No, I don't think that will be necessary.
MISS HOFFMAN: No, no I don't think so, either.
Who told him I was married, Miss Hoffman?
Mrs. Stoddard, sir.
Before Daniel even got my letter?
Yes, yes just after the cable came.
I see, I'll have to have a long talk with her.
MAGGIE VOICEOVER: Why didn't Quentin tell me
that Daniel resented me?
I would have understood.
Why didn't he tell me?
Well, the hero.
Have you written much today?
Shut up, you know I just got up.
With a hangover.
You're going to start in again, huh?
Are you?
That's more the question.
WILL: Just looked in on our guest.
He's been gone all day.
Yes, do you know his bed hasn't been slept in?
Because I made it earlier.
It's the same book, you know?
The one I gave Angelique when Junior flew out of that room,
the one no one could find.
Smells of her perfume.
CAROLYN: She has been dead for six months.
The room still has her fragrance.
CAROLYN: You imagine things.
Tell me, how'd he get the book, Carolyn, huh?
Has he been here longer than he says he has?
He came here last night.
Now don't ask me anymore questions, please.
I, uh, have a migraine.
Oh, I'm sorry, I thought that maybe you and I
would go up to the big house, you know?
Meet the new mistress.
You go.
Oh, Honey come on, it will do you good to get out.
When did you know what was good for me?
Okay, I'll meander up myself.
Yes, maybe I'll see Mr. Barnabas Collins.
I'm looking forward to a chat with him.
Will Loomis, don't you start anything with him.
We need that money he pays us,
and don't you forget it.
MAGGIE VOICEOVER: If only I could find something
Angelique had written.
Then I could find out if it's the same handwriting.
I don't know who will be coming here today.
Oh, no one, I don't...
Aren't you going to continue the tradition?
Every day at tea time, anyone on the estate
could drop in.
What a charming idea.
Mrs. Collins thought so.
MR. LOOMIS: Hello.
Oh, that would be Mr. Loomis, I think.
Well, there you are.
Mr. Loomis, this...
Ah, ah, no don't introduce me.
I knew her daddy, oh fine fellow, good painter.
You know, we spent so many marvelous nights
at the Eagle.
I, I missed him when he went away.
I'm so glad you're back here in Collinwood.
Oh, ah, oh no, no no.
You see, that's bad for you.
I never touch it, it's tannic acid, it's bad for you.
Hoffman will tell you how I feel about tea, eh?
Indeed I will.
I wanted to catch you alone.
MAGGIE: Oh, Mr. Loomis.
Shh, it's coming from a stranger,
but sometimes that's best.
Don't trust her, don't trust her at all.
Watch her carefully.
I know what it's like to need a friend in this house.
And I owe old Sam Evans a few favors,
and I'm perfectly willing to let you collect them.
Has she given you any trouble yet?
No, I mean, I don't know, at least I...
You see, this house is full of haunteds.
You've got to step carefully.
I've only met Mrs. Stoddard and...
Oh, oh well you know she'll smile at you,
you see your husband pays her bills.
Oh, no no no, don't think I'm just a gossiping,
all right, I am that.
But believe me, I'm more too.
Mr. Loomis, I have a note.
I haven't shown it to anyone yet, even Quentin.
I don't know what it means.
Mr. Loomis.
I never thought I'd see her handwriting again.
She's dead, I don't believe in ghosts, Mr. Loomis.
This is the house for them.
BARNABAS VOICEOVER: I don't want to harm anyone.
Despite the failure of my hope that by transcending time
I could change what I am.
I'm alone here.
I've been waiting all day for you to arrive.
BARNABAS: Carolyn.
You need me now, don't you?
No, Carolyn.
You can't start this and then just stop.
I, I can't let you do that.
Do you understand me?
I won't let you.
I'll tell Will everything, I swear I will.
BARNABAS: Carolyn.
You can't forget about me now, I'll tell.
I'll tell!
Carolyn.
MAGGIE VOICEOVER: Her room, I must find her room.
MISS HOFFMAN:You should have seen her.[laughing]
Pouring tea for Will Loomis, the look on his face.
Oh, she has so much to learn.
It's so hard to see how one man could have chosen.
MAGGIE: Miss, uh...
Yes, Mrs. Collins?
I heard voices and I...
Oh, I was talking to one of the chambermaids.
You shouldn't be in this part of the house.
We haven't cleaned it yet for you.
It's almost dinner time, I assume you're going to change.
Really, she's as pretty a girl as you'd want to see.
Carolyn, what is the matter with you?
You're not even listening to me.
Nothing, I'm fine.
Well you sure don't act it.
Let me alone, Will.
She didn't know anything about your cousin Barnabas,
not a thing.
It's a funny business.
I mean, you'd think he'd have gone to the big house
before he came here.
I mean, I sure would have.
Carolyn.
Carolyn!
[rooster crowing]
[creepy instrumental music]
WILL: Not yet, Mr. Collins.
[yelling]
Books are right, they tell you what to do
even if vampires are legendary.
Only Carolyn and I know they're not,
don't we, Mr. Collins?
Only, she can't help you.
BARNABAS: Let me die.
Oh, I should, but I used to be a reporter.
Now, where did you come from?
Tell me.
Another banged up time.
What?
Yes, another time exists with another Will Loomis
and a Carolyn all living in this estate.
And you, you exist in this other time?
As I am, yes.
You see, I am the first Barnabas Collins,
the man you've written about, the son of Joshua.
I discovered a room in Collinwood, Angelique's room.
I can see you there.
I watched you the day that Julia threw the book
into the hall, the book came from your time to mine.
I picked it up.
A book, oh a book at last.
BARNABAS: What are you going to do with it?
Oh, I need you Mr. Collins, oh, I need you.
You're going to make me my fortune, what a book.
A cross.
I'm taking no, no chances, Mr. Collins, get in.
You're going to be my prisoner, my hope.
My salvation, yes, my salvation.
[sinister instrumental music]
