[eerie music]

VOICEOVER:A long time ago at Collinwood,

Quentin Collins and Amanda Harris fell in love,

then lost each other for more than a lifetime.

Now they're finally to be reunited

in the domain of death.

But soon they will learn

how fragile their moment of happiness is.

For death is greedy,

and reluctant to let go what is his.

And he has told Quentin that Amanda will never

be able to leave if they should touch

before they escape his domain.

[door creaks]

[wind blowing]

We must not touch.

[thunder rumbling]

Amanda, stop!

[dramatic tones]

[spooky music]

I nearly lost you.

I don't understand.

I was told you were here, I was told to come to you.

Weren't you told not to touch me?

No.

Then I see.

That means the test has already begun.

The test?

I thought we could be together.

And we will be.

In the land of the living.

Now listen, we are not allowed to touch.

No matter how much we want to.

We're not allowed to touch because if we do

I won't be able to take you with me.

Now, you've got to understand that, no matter what.

We cannot touch.

No matter what?

What does that mean?

It means that every minute we're here we're in danger.

I thought the danger wouldn't start until the journey out.

I didn't expect it quite so soon.

The journey out?

Quentin, I'm frightened.

Yes, of course you are.

But I'll be there.

As close as I can be.

And when it's all over, I'm going to hold you so tight.

I love you.

But we mustn't forget.

Here, take this.

Let's begin.

There's no point in holding back now.

Yes, I can imagine.

When a man's in that state

you really can't count on anything.

Yes, thank you.

Did the sheriff seem suspicious about your calling?

No.

I hope you're right.

I had to call.

I had to find out what was happening.

And what did you find out?

Nothing.

That's not true.

If he were just wandering around town,

the police would've picked him up by now.

That means he's run for it.

It might even mean he's dead.

Then, we'd never have to worry about his talking to anyone.

VOICEOVER:Megan! Megan!

Philip, Philip, what's the matter?

Whatever it was, you must stop hiding from what happened.

You must try to talk to me.

You must realize that you're safe now.

Safe.

I went by the room.

And it seemed too quiet somehow.

And it was empty?

Yes, why?

Why did he do it?

He knows how worried we are about Paul Stoddard being gone.

Now, with him gone too who knows what's going to happen?

[suspenseful music]

QUENTIN: You all right?

Yes, I'm all right, but I'm anxious to keep going.

Yeah, the question is, which way?

Look, I'll try this passageway, see how it looks.

Stay here.

It seems to narrow off down here.

I'll try the other one.

[gasps]

[screams]

Amanda, what is it? What's the matter?

AMANDA: I'm caught in something!

A web!

Can't get out! I can't!

[screams]

Quentin, help me, please!

QUENTIN: Try not to move around, try not to move around.

AMANDA: Please, hurry!

It'll be all right, don't worry.

[dramatic music]

AMANDA: Quentin, what is it?

Tell me!

[rattling]

[dramatic music]

[rattling]

AMANDA: Quentin! What is it?

No! No!

No!

QUENTIN: Amanda, don't struggle!

Stand still! Stay still!

AMANDA: I can't!

You must!

[rattling]

[thumps]

[squealing]

Well, that takes care of him.

AMANDA: Quentin!

QUENTIN: Don't try to move.

AMANDA: I'm free!

I've never seen anything like that.

That, that web.

That, that thing.

Well, try not to think about it.

Please, it'll be all right.

Oh, if you could just put your arms around me.

It would be worth anything.

No, it wouldn't.

Not an eternity without you.

Hey.

Now look, you'd better stay behind me from now on.

Especially since we don't have any candles.

How are we going to keep from being separated?

We'll use my coat.

Here.

Take hold.

As long as we hold on to it, no matter what's happened.

We'll always be together.

There's only one thing to do now.

- Where are you going? - For Barnabas.

- MEGAN: No! - Why not?

Because, because Barnabas would go looking for him.

And find him, if there's any luck

and bring him back here where he belongs.

But he doesn't want it that way.

He doesn't want to come back here.

Until he does what he has to do.

PHILIP: What are you talking about?

Don't you know?

Don't you understand him at all?

He's gone to find Paul Stoddard.

- Find Paul Stoddard? - He hates him.

He always has.

But he can't just go--

He can do anything he wants to.

But that can only make matters worse.

Oh, and how matters are so good with Paul Stoddard free.

Ready to talk to the first person he sees.

Now, you said it would be best if he were dead.

- I didn't say that, you did. - Oh, no matter. It's true!

But none of us is smart enough to find him

and take care of him.

- I still-- - MEGAN: He can.

I still think we have to tell Barnabas.

You will tell him nothing.

You will do nothing.

You will just wait.

Just wait.

[suspenseful music]

Oh, Quentin.

QUENTIN: You all right?

I twisted my ankle on a rock.

QUENTIN: Can you go on?

Yes.

QUENTIN: All right.

That's a good girl.

Oh god, do I wanna hold you.

Here.

Quentin.

When I had to drop the coat I was so afraid I'd lose you.

We haven't come all this way to lose each other.

You must rid yourself of the shock of your experience.

Try to think of it as something

that happened to someone else.

Now, tell me what happened to him.

To someone else.

[door closes]

Operator, please get me the police.

So you can talk, Mr. Stoddard.

[whimpering]

Mr. Stoddard!

Mr. Stoddard, please open that door.

I won't harm you.

Now that you can speak, I may be able to help you.

[dialing phone]

Hello?

Julia?

Hey look, there's a light.

Beyond that passageway there's safety.

We just gotta cross this bridge.

We can't cross that bridge.

It's the final trap.

- QUENTIN: Amanda. - AMANDA: We're caught!

QUENTIN: Amanda, now listen to me.

Now look.

Hey, I know you're tired, I know you're frightened.

But we've made it this far.

And we can make it the rest of the way.

AMANDA: How can we?

I'll test the bridge.

If it can hold me, it can hold you.

Oh Quentin.

Quentin, I feel there's so little time left.

You can't feel that way.

Come on.

AMANDA: Quentin, don't cross that bridge yet.

Just stay here with me.

Just one moment longer.

If I do, I'll take you in my arms.

If you go, I'll lose you.

Oh no you won't.

I promise you that.

[suspenseful music]

[wind blowing]

[thunder rumbling]

[thunder clapping]

[dramatic music]

[knocking]

Julia.

Thank heavens, maybe you can do something with him.

Well, I'll try.

Are you sure he can talk?

Well enough to call the police.

And he can move fast enough to have locked himself in there.

Mr. Stoddard.

It's Julia Hoffman.

PAUL: Leave me alone!

Mr. Stoddard, don't you realize that

Professor Stokes and I want to help you.

More than anything, we want to help you

but you've got to help us by telling us.

PAUL: Nothing!

I will tell you nothing!

I will talk to the police!

All right, Mr. Stoddard, I'll call the police.

Do you think that's wise, Julia?

Mr. Stoddard, I will do what you want us to do.

I will call the police.

Now, you can hear me if you listen very closely.

Hello, operator?

I want you to get me the police.

Hello, sheriff?

This is Dr. Hoffman, I'm at Professor Stokes' house.

It's urgent that you come here immediately.

[thunder rumbling]

[screaming]

Mr. Stoddard!

What's the matter? What happened?

Tell us, tell us!

Let us in! Please, let us in!

Heavens, what's happened to him?

I made it.

AMANDA: I feel so, so far away from you.

Only 'til you cross.

Oh, Quentin.

I'm frightened to cross alone.

Amanda listen to me.

You'll never have to do another thing alone

as long as you live.

Now, c'mon, please.

Come to me.

Cross the bridge.

C'mon, you can do it.

That's it.

Easy does it.

Just one step at a time.

Take your time, take your time, don't rush.

That's it.

That's it.

What's wrong?

It's so deep down there.

I've never seen anything like it.

The room is a shambles, completely destroyed.

The window's broken, the furniture torn apart.

Who, what else was in the room?

- Nothing. - JULIA: Nothing.

Nothing but a peculiar smell,

and some sort of slime or substance.

Paul Stoddard is dead.

Dead?

Yes, this time I think we'd better call the police.

Now, listen.

Hey, don't look down.

Just look straight ahead.

- C'mon, look up. - No.

QUENTIN: C'mon turn around and walk forward.

No, I wanna go back!

QUENTIN: Amanda!

Please, come to me.

Hey, c'mon now, you can do it.

C'mon.

C'mon, easy does it. Just a few more steps.

C'mon, c'mon.

[screaming] Amanda!

[spooky music]
