NARRATOR:For Magda,

Collinwood is the only sanctuary

from the gypsy captors

who want to take her to her death.

But the Great House is still far away

and her pursuer is very close.

And every shadow of the night can suddenly come alive

and k*ll her.

[ knocking ]

MAGDA: Let me in, somebody let me in.

[ crying ] Let me in or I'm dead.

Yeah, dead.

[ gasps ]

[ theme music playing ]

QUENTIN: Magda, what's the matter with you?

[ panting ] Quentin.

I called for you, didn't you hear me?

I don't hear nobody except him.

Who?

Let me inside, I tell you everything.

[ Magda panting ]

Now, why are you trembling?

[ panting ] It's so cold out there, like death.

Come on, come on, sit by the fire.

[ Magda panting ]

Wait, don't go, Quentin, don't.

I'm just gonna shut the windows, don't worry.

Here, brandy will warm you up.

It ain't just the cold, Quentin. It's him.

King Johnny, he came for me, like, when he left the note.

We got as far as the forest and then I ran away.

Where was he taking you?

Back to see the others, the tribe.

Without going after Petofi?

Why didn't you tell him, Petofi had the hand,

why didn't you send him after him?

[ panting ]

He found what they wanted in the Old House.

QUENTIN: He found the hand at the Old House?

He found a hand.

And how could that have happened?

MAGDA: How do you think?

Petofi?

Did they know that he tricked them?

They think it was me who done it.

Magda, now, you've got to tell 'em about Petofi.

Your life depends on it, Magda.

Oh!

I can't, Quentin.

I can't.

Magda.

You had a spell put on you, haven't you?

Something that prevents you from talking about him,

from saying his name. That's it, isn't it?

Oh, Quentin, if only--

If only I could let the gypsies know that.

Quentin, you can tell them.

You could tell the gypsies where the hand is.

[ chuckling ] Oh yes, they'd like that, wouldn't they?

To find Petofi and the hand at the same time,

joined together.

[ scoffs ]

Magda.

Magda, where's King Johnny now?

MAGDA: His caravan is at the edge of Birch Lake.

You know, there just may be a way

to get Barnabas free yet.

It could work. It just could work.

Now, you relax.

We may be all be out of trouble very soon.

Quentin?

Quentin, love?

Oh.

He says I am safe here.

Safe.

I am safe.

[ knocking ]

Who's there?

Quentin.

BETH: What's the matter?

Nothing's the matter.

For once.

It may be very fortunate for us.

Things may be going our way, Beth.

What do you mean?

The stubborn Count Petofi,

may realize that he has to free Barnabas or else,

face a very unpleasant future.

Quentin.

What's the matter?

When Barnabas is free...

he's gonna be very angry at me for turning away from him

when he needed me.

Now, look.

Barnabas knows what Petofi is.

He knows what he can do to people.

He won't be angry.

I'm still afraid.

QUENTIN: Beth, Barnabas is our only hope for help,

if there's to be any help at all.

Now, you've got to help me free him.

Now, you must,

for all of our sakes, huh?

Yes, of course, Quentin.

That's a girl, thank you.

Now.

You're sure you know what to do if I don't get back here

by one o'clock?

Yes, I know.

But I don't like it.

I'm so afraid something terrible is going to happen to you.

That's the chance I'll have to take.

Now, you keep your eye on that clock.

You be aware of it every minute and second.

I also want you to take care of Magda,

make sure that she's fed and has a place to rest.

And whatever you do,

don't let her out of this house.

You understand?

Yes, Quentin.

[ footsteps ]

[ clock ticking ]

[ door opens ]

[ wind howling ]

[ door unlocks ]

Quentin asked me to look after you.

If you come to the kitchen with me.

I'll see that you get something to eat.

Thank God, there is somebody else in this house

to stay with me. Where is Quentin?

He went to see Count Petofi.

Went there?

Oh, why did he go there, that crazy man?

Why didn't he do what I wanted him to do

and let the gypsies take care of what they want

to take care of? [ grunts ]

[ grandfather's clock chiming ]

[ door opening and closing ]

[ footsteps ]

Good evening, Mr. Collins.

I'm delighted to see you.

This score, brilliance,

held in Italy.

I hope to conduct it someday.

Do you know Italy, Mr. Collins?

Yes, I do.

PETOFI: A most beautiful country.

Mm-hmm.

PETOFI: Tuscany, The Campania.

I expect to go back there as...

Soon as I have the chance.

Well, you may find that, uh, this may be...

The very perfect chance,

now that you're not going to the future.

You may also find that you want to move

very far from Collinwood,

when you find out why I'm here.

[softly] Just why are you here, Mr. Collins?

To get Barnabas Collins.

And you're going to give him to me.

To get Barnabas.

As simple as that.

Oh, I'm sure that you'll want to think it over or a while,

consider the alternatives, so to speak.

Hmm?

[ scoffs ]

You, uh, have until :.

And what is the alternative?

The gypsies will find out exactly where you are...

And exactly what you have.

The gypsies learned nothing from Magda,

who is ordinarily a very talkative lady.

What's to prevent me from doing to you,

exactly what I did to her?

A rather good reason.

If I'm not back at Collinwood, at precisely one o'clock,

someone is prepared to deliver a note to King Johnny

with the full story.

Congratulations, Mr. Collins, on a good try.

But, I'm afraid it won't work.

There's nothing you can do to stop it.

PETOFI: Oh, I can stop it very easily.

Very easily, indeed.

All I need do is, find out from you,

who the person is who has the note to the gypsies

and intercept that person.

I can see by your eyes

that you're thinking of pitting your will

against mine, but, please don't try,

you'd be wasting your time.

I can make you tell me who has the note,

very easily, at this moment.

Well, uh, there's no need to force me into talking.

But, I'd be glad to tell you who my accomplice is.

It's Angelique.

- Angelique? - Yes.

I chose Angelique because there's nothing

you can do to control her mind.

There's nothing you can do, but accept my offer

and free Barnabas,

in exchange for your own freedom from the gypsies.

You're a brave man, Mr. Collins.

But, I suggest that you leave this place at once.

QUENTIN: Not without Barnabas Collins.

Yes, without Barnabas.

Because, if you stay, I may very well

decide to k*ll you.

And you may very well decide to give me Barnabas.

And you're willing to wager your life on that possibility?

QUENTIN: I am.

Very well.

Sit down, smoke a cigar,

have some brandy.

There are a great many things we can do together.

A great, many things.

And any one of them...

May be the very last thing you will ever do...

In this world.

CHARITY:Let's face it, love.

You never really were a headliner.

And no one to blame, but yourself.

When push came to shove,

you were just too soft.

But, you're not gonna be soft now.

Not unless you're ready to lose Quentin,

the way you lost Carl.

You really are pretty, love.

Far prettier than that whiny, little item under the stairs.

Well, she won't be whining much longer, and what a relief

that will be for Quentin.

[ sighs ]

Yes, it's going to be quite an happy surprise for Quentin,

finding Beth Chavez is dead.

[ grandfather's clock chiming ]

Another drink, Mr. Collins?

No.

You survived one.

Are you afraid to break your luck.

[ laughing ] No, I just don't want another one.

Very well, I'll accept that.

But I could k*ll you in quite a number of other ways.

- Couldn't I? - You could?

But the gypsies would still find you.

[ knocking ]

Who's there?

CHARITY: Just me.

What's the matter?

I don't know, I couldn't sleep.

Besides, a bit of company was what I needed.

I'm sorry, but I have some things to do tonight.

- Oh. - Some other night

would be better.

I won't be in the way, love.

I promise I'll be quiet as Miss Mouse.

You won't even know I'm around.

Are you all right?

Oh, yes, I'm fine.

I just needed your company to pep up me old spirits.

Ah, speakin' of spirits,

how about you and me sneak in around to the parlor

for a brandy?

Charity, I'm going to find your father.

[ laughs ] Find my father?

That's more than my mum could ever do

when she needed him.

Come on, love, let's go.

BETH: Why is the door locked?

I locked it.

BETH: Why?

Oh, it's the servant class nowadays.

You know, love, you'd be surprised

how many light fingers

they are, servants, but--

Oh, sorry, love, didn't mean it personally.

I don't think of you as a servant, love.

You know that.

If I did, would I be drinking with you and swapping secrets?

BETH: Secrets?

I have no secrets.

CHARITY: Ah, you can't fool me, love.

I know you're supposed to meet Quentin.

BETH: No, I'm not.

CHARITY: Oh! Well, then.

There's no reason for you not to have this drink.

BETH: There is a reason.

I promised Quentin I'd do something for him.

CHARITY: [ laughing ] Ain't that a toot,

I got something to do for Quentin tonight, too.

BETH: What do you have to do for Quentin?

CHARITY: Oh, you'll find out in time, love.

Here, have a drink.

[ grandfather's clock chiming ]

Five minutes are left, Petofi,

and after that, will be too late for me

to get back to Collinwood.

Angelique will go to King Johnny,

King Johnny will come here and the gypsies will find you.

Will they?

But, I shall have moved on...

By the time they get here.

You can't move far enough to avoid them.

Especially, now that they know

what it is they're looking for.

I could k*ll you a dozen times over in five minutes.

Go ahead.

If you think that will do you any good.

CHARITY: Finish your drink, love.

Then we can have another.

Charity, I can't finish this drink,

I have to go now.

Oh, there's always time for a drink, love.

No, it's too late.

Oh, sure it's late,

but the last few drops always

taste the best, right, love?

Wait.

What's the matter?

It's my superstition.

Superstition?

I always like to drink to something or someone.

That's even better for raising the spirits,

so to speak [laughs].

To Quentin.

You got any objection to drinking to that?

No, of course not.

- To Quentin. - Ah.

Now, I really must...Go...

Quentin loves me, love, not you.

That's why I had to do it.

That's why I had to get rid of you.

I had to do it, for Quentin.
