NARRATOR:Collinwood before the turn of the century.

For many months, Quentin Collins

has managed to keep his terrible secret

from all but a handful of people.

Now one of these,

a young woman who has come to live at Collinwood,

has become determined to expose Quentin to the world.

But on this night, a third party has intervened:

the mysterious Count Petofi.

You! I knew I heard your voice.

My dear Ms. Trask, I'm delighted to see you.

Don't you dare to be polite to me, Mr. Fingibbons.

Get out, immediately!

If you don't I shall summon my father.

No, my dear, I don't think you'll summon

your father or anyone else.

How dare you?

Tell me, Ms. Trask, are you enjoying

your stay at Collinwood?

Or are the problems too much for you?

The responsibilities too weighty

for your fragile shoulders?

Tell me, Ms. Trask, have I guessed right?

What a pity. You can't tell me.

You've lost your voice, too bad.

Perhaps I can help you.

I am said to have a very healing touch.

[ ominous music ]

[ spooky theme music ]

What did you do to her?

You really care what happens to her, Mr. Collins?

My only concern is she'll be kept quiet.

I suspect beneath that hard veneer of yours

there lies a soft core of sentiment.

Please leave the room, I must deal

with this young lady alone.

Why? Is there some power of yours

you don't want me to see?

Would you prefer she be free to destroy you, Mr. Collins?

You are quite a lovely creature, my dear.

You may thank me for the compliment if you'd like.

Thank you.

What a pity that you're also a nuisance.

People of your kind are almost always destined

to end life tragically

as I shall show you in a moment.

Come with me.

Look out that window.

Concentrate, and you will soon see

the future reveal itself to you.

Your fate, your fate dear Charity, awaits you.

[ spooky music ]

[ knocking ]

Oh, it's you.

Magda, I must speak with you immediately.

I ain't got no time, I'm waiting for someone.

But what I want won't take very much time,

and it's very important to me.

All right, what is it?

Do you remember, once before, you read the cards for me?

Yeah.

Well, something has happened in my life,

and I'd like you to read them again.

I must know what the future holds in store for me.

You're better off not to know, especially tonight.

Why?

Because tonight the cards tell only tragedy.

See, see I have been reading them.

The end is always the same.

But it wouldn't be for me. Magda, please try.

I tell you, it ain't no use.

Every arrangement that I make says the same thing.

There will be an act of violence not far from here tonight.

An act of violence? Against whom?

The man I'm waiting for is the one I've got to warn.

His name is Aristede.

Aristede? I don't know him.

Why don't you go home, and go to bed?

Come back here tomorrow, maybe the cards say different.

[ knocking ]

Well I got your message, Magda, what's the matter?

Where is Petofi?

Well I assume he's where he normally is, why?

Because you've got to get to where he is,

and you've got to warn him.

Warn him? Of what, Magda? Tell me.

What is it, Magda?

What is it, what's happening, Magda?

I don't know.

[ thunder ]

[ ominous music ]

Aaaaaaaaaah!

[ screaming ]

He's dead! He's dead.

He? Who are you talking about?

The young man.

What young man, speak up!

His name was Aristede.

Aristede? Tell me everything you saw.

Who k*lled him?

I don't know. He was wearing a hood.

Like an executioner.

Yes? Yes, go on.

He strangled Aristede, then he reached down to the ground

and picked up a scimitar.

Scimitar? Not even I can fully understand

the monstrous power of this dreadful.

Instead of showing you your own death,

it made you show you mine.

Go on my dear, you must tell me more.

No, I don't want to!

You must tell me all you see.

This time, describe it as you see it.

I see a graveyard. It frightens me.

Move.

CHARITY: I see that same man.

The executioner with the scimitar.

He's walking through the graveyard.

Now I see some stones. They are the walls of a building.

I've never seen it before. It looks cold and damp.

And you're there, you're being held prisoner.

Your hand is strapped to a chair.

A door is opening somewhere, someone is coming.

It's the executioner, he's going toward you.

He's raising the scimitar over your head.

He's cut off your head!

Enough. I've heard all I want to hear.

Thank you, my dear. Now you will begin a new life.

One that many people will not understand.

But they will be unable to do anything about it.

Enjoy it, my dear, enjoy it while it lasts.

What did you do to her?

See for yourself.

Why are you in such a hurry?

One may play many tricks with fate, Mr. Collins,

but one must not tempt it.

Charity?

Charity!

[ spooky music ]

Not Carr. Oh Carr was a dear to me, all right,

but he was such a balmy one.

Do you know what I mean?

He put it right out of your head, didn't he?

Put what right out of my head?

I've never forgotten anything in my life.

It's part of my stock and trade, love.

Now I wonder why he left here so quickly.

He looked frightened.

Who are you talking about, anyway?

The gentleman who was here a moment ago.

Oh, you mean the old gent? He left.

Yes, I realize that, but why?

How should I know? Come on love, let me entertain you

in my own inimitable fashion.

My dear Aristede, it's a pleasure

to see you looking well and alive.

I beg your pardon?

A feeble attempt at lemonade, my dear boy.

The fact is, we are in serious danger.

What kind of danger?

Our enemies are on the move again.

How far away they are, I do not know,

but they will be here, and we must take steps

to avoid capture.

Well look, if we know they're coming,

why don't we just leave?

No, no we have a prisoner of our own in there

who is far too valuable to leave behind.

Barnabus Collins may well prove to be a perfect

means of escape.

What are we going to do, then?

All our lives, we've been running, always running.

Now the time has come to throw our enemies off.

How?

By giving them some small measure of satisfaction.

I'm afraid I don't understand.

Come along, Aristede. We have work to do.

What about Barnabus Collins?

We can't just leave him here unguarded.

We have no choice, this is an emergency.
