NARRATOR:A morning filled with anxiety and horror,

for a child has been possessed by an unscrupulous, evil man,

and the boy must act as the man would have him do.

And now, just after dawn, in an old house on the estate,

the child has kissed a gypsy,

and the gypsy suddenly has no will of her own.

And she is told to lead them to an enemy's hiding place.

[ suspenseful music ]

You mustn't lead us to somewhere that Mr. Collins is not.

But you know that, don't you, gypsy?

Yes, she knows that.

You're more trusting than I am. She's clever.

Not at all. If she was clever,

she wouldn't have herself in such a situation.

You make me feel so bad.

You tell me everything is my fault.

If Sandor had not gone to look for the jewels,

if I had not sent him,

then Barnabas Collins would still be in his coffin.

But that is true, Magda.

If I had not put on the curse.

And if you had not stolen the hand.

Oh, but we have to thank her for that.

For she has given us a chance to get the hand now,

and we are going to give her a chance

to atone for all of her sins.

I'm going to give you the opportunity

to end this horror.

And you will be very grateful to me, won't you, Magda?

Won't you, Magda?

Jamison.

COUNT PETOFI: Don't call me that!

I don't call you by your wrong name, gypsy!

Don't make me take you to Barnabas, please.

You see, she isn't going to do it.

Oh, yes she is.

She has no choice, do you, Magda?

No, of course not.

You know the will of Count Petofi

is stronger than any other man.

Shall we go?

All right, we go now.

Wait a minute.

We go to his coffin.

To his coffin.

And no tricks.

None at all.

No, it is too late for tricks.

[ door opens ]

- There it is. Now, I go. - Not yet.

Why do you want me to stay here?

Because you haven't been dismissed.

Are you going to make me stay here

and watch you do whatever you are going to do?

A sensitive gypsy?

A gypsy with a heart?

Barnabas is my friend.

As well as your enemy.

MAGDA: Yes.

Yes, but he--he don't deserve to die this way.

This will do for a stake.

Gonna need some protection.

Also, I'm not opening that coffin.

Aristede, it is day now. He can't hurt you.

What if you don't know what he can do?

He disappeared from me while I was looking at him.

All I heard was the sound of a bat flying away.

That was at night! In the day, he is powerless.

But how can we be sure?

Keep your stake if you're so afraid, but open the coffin.

MAGDA: No.

COUNT PETOFI: Wait, gypsy!

We're not through with you yet.

You brought us to this room, and there is a coffin.

But we haven't seen what we came to see as of yet.

Open it.

[ coffin creaks ]

- Where's Barnabas Collins? - Oh!

You had me fooled, gypsy.

I thought you were telling the truth.

I am!

Then, why did you bring us here?

Because he left, just before dawn, to come here.

Well, maybe he stopped off on the way here.

But we know better than that, don't we, gypsy?

I ain't got no idea where he is.

Shall I refresh your memory?

It won't do no good.

You know, maybe you'll be surprised

by what you remember after I'm through with you.

Don't do nothing.

I don't know nothing.

ARISTEDE: Stop lying.

I ain't. I swear it, I ain't.

You know, I threatened to k*ll you tonight.

I'm sorry now that I didn't.

COUNT PETOFI: But I am not.

[ coffin creaks ]

She is telling the truth.

ARISTEDE: Gypsies never do.

She does not know where he is.

She must. It's a trap for us!

No. No, it isn't.

Perhaps Barnabas Collins had... had a premonition of danger.

He merely follows his instincts, as we must now do.

But we've got to find him today during the day!

No, that won't be possible, will it, gypsy?

No, our only chance is at night.

But we can't do anything to him then.

Oh, yes.

He'll come to the gypsy tonight,

and he'll tell her where his new hiding place is.

And then, tomorrow... tomorrow, she can take us there.

If she will.

Oh, she will, she will.

Yes, I've become very interested in Barnabas Collins.

He has found a way to defeat death.

That interests me very much, gypsy.

Should interest you also, Aristede.

I feel that...

that somewhere in his house,

there must be information about him.

Information that we could use.

Nothing but his papers, diaries.

What do we care what he lived like when he was a man?

What good does it do us to know facts about him?

You forget, Aristede, that my body lies useless to me.

I haven't forgotten.

And what would your life be like without me, Aristede?

I will die soon.

Or perhaps... perhaps that is not necessary.

Somewhere in this house...

somewhere, Aristede, there is something that can help me!

I know that!

But we've looked everywhere.

His books!

Are we so vitally interested in his taste?

COUNT PETOFI: Perhaps. Perhaps.

ARISTEDE:The Complete Works of Shakespeare.

Does that tell you what you wanna know?

COUNT PETOFI: What is this book here?

Family History of the Collins Family.

What a fantastic idea!

If whoever wrote it told the truth... [ laughs ]

That would be interesting reading.

Look, Aristede!

Privately printed.

No, no, look at the date!

?

But that's impossible, how could that... be?

Seemingly so.

That's nearly years away, .

Aristede, this is exactly what we were meant to find.

[ dramatic orchestral music ]

[ exhales ]

How could a book be published in when it's now ?

How's that possible?

Oh, I guess we'll just have to find that out.

Look at the clothes the people are wearing.

You would notice that, wouldn't you, Aristede?

Yeah, it's no joke, I mean, no one would go through

all of this trouble just for a joke.

No Aristede... it is no joke.

But then, what is it?

Books can't just fly back through the years.

No, books can't.

No more than people can.

But obviously, Aristede, someone has.

Who?

Well, we'll just have to find that out.

And quickly!

Go get Magda.

Petofi, he could escape.

I could escape!

I would be in another century!

I would live forever!

Quick, get her, we've got a lot to do this morning.

I have to see Quentin and how-- how he fared last night,

and how the wolf has lead him.

Be quick about it!

[ suspenseful music ]

Quentin.

Quentin!

QUENTIN:Charity.

Charity.

Charity.

Charity!

Charity!

Charity!

[ wolf howling ]

Quentin?

Where are you?

[ gentle classical music ]

Dear Mr. Collins, what are you doing?

JAMISON: Hmm, the likeness is not yet perfect.

You see, there's an animal quality that I...

that I just can't seem to capture in it.

Animal quality?

Have you seen it, Jamison?

[ laughs ] Yes.

CHARITY: And has the picture changed for you too?

Changed, Charity?

CHARITY: I was looking at the portrait, and...

suddenly... suddenly, I saw the face of a wolf.

[ laughing ]

CHARITY: Why are you laughing?

Has it changed for you too?

He's lost, Charity.

Lost?

Yes, he's a poor, lost soul.

- He's not lost! - Oh, yes!

He simply needs...

What, Charity?

What does he need?

I'm not going to tell you. You'll laugh at me.

Oh, but no, I will not laugh at you.

You see, Charity, I know what he needs.

Love.

But he's hiding from you.

He isn't hiding.

I hear his music.

Quentin?

Oh, yes, he's hiding from you because he needs you so!

Yes!

Perhaps you could be the person to save him.

From what?

- [ laughing ] - Save him from what?

[ wolf howls ]

It's very close, isn't it?

The wolf is so close.

Oh, Jamison, I'm so afraid.

Quentin!

I've been looking for you.

You found me, Charity.

Yes, yes I have.

There I am, [ chuckles ] for all to see.

[ chuckles ]

Sometimes I think that face is more real than this one.

CHARITY: That isn't true.

Do you know the truth, Charity?

I want to, very much.

No, no, you don't.

You mustn't ever know.

Why not, Quentin?

Why do you always insist we talk about it?

Can't you be happy?

Can't you be g*y?

Don't you want to make me feel good?

Oh, yes. Yes, I do.

Well, then, sing, Charity.

Sing!

And make me stop thinking...

- [ Charity laughs ] - please.

Oh, yes, Quentin.

Yes.

[ Quentin and woman laugh ]

Now, you may go back to the house.

CHARITY: Who is she?

Who is she?!

Oh, what does it matter, Charity?

It does!

- It does! - QUENTIN: Why, Charity?

Because it just does!

She's gone.

You made that happen!

MAGDA: Forget him.

- I can't. I can't. - MAGDA: You've got to!

Why do you tell me that?

Because I know his secret.

I know why he acts like he does.

- CHARITY: Tell me. - [ Magda chuckles ]

Why won't you tell me?

If I'm so important to him, why won't you tell me?

[ Magda laughing ]

[ girl laughing ]

Who are you?

You stay away from Quentin, do you hear me?

[ girl laughs ]

Do you understand?!

Why won't you answer me, why?

Quentin, why do you treat me this way?!

CHARITY: I hate you.

I hate you.

I hate you, I hate you, I hate you,

I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!

Magda.

Magda will know what it means.

Magda will tell me.

[ suspenseful music ]

I'm sorry but we need you again, gypsy.

Oh, so you know of this book.

Don't bother lying, gypsy.

No, no, don't bother.

Simply tell us two things.

Who brought this book to our time and why?

[ dramatic suspenseful music ]

I--I never saw it before.

When you lie to him, you lie to Count Petofi.

You've heard of his powers.

Hasn't anyone in your tribe ever told you

about the mysterious shadow he can cast?

The shadow that isn't your own, that follows you?

You've heard that, haven't you, gypsy?

Yes, yes!

Then answer his questions, gypsy!

Barnabas... Barnabas Collins knew about this book.

A girl named--named Vicki,

she brought it here from his own time.

His own time?

.

You don't believe it, eh? Neither did I.

I don't understand how to believe these things.

But he swears that he comes from .

This is interesting.

And when he gets everything done here

that he came here to do, then, he will go back there.

He will?

Magda, tell me, why did he come here?

I don't know, I don't know exactly,

it had to do with a sick child.

A child who is dying in .

That's all I know, I swear it.

How did he accomplish this rather extraordinary feat?

I've got no idea.

You mean you never ask him?

There are some things that it is better not to ask,

that is better not to know.

She's not telling the truth, she knows.

Oh, no, she doesn't know.

Then, how are we going to find out?

We'll find out from Barnabas Collins himself.

- I got to go now. - COUNT PETOFI: No, you don't.

I have a few more questions to ask you before I begin

to read what I'm sure is a very interesting book.

But have no fear, gypsy, they're very simple questions.

Who else knows this about Barnabas Collins?

Nobody.

He came here alone?

With no help?

Alone, yes.

Well, then, that tells us exactly what we must do.

We have to convince Barnabas Collins that

it's just much more pleasant to travel with a companion.
