FEMALE NARRATOR: Collinwood in the year .

And on that night, Quentin Collins

has succeeded in destroying the urn

which contains the essence of Laura Collins' existence.

And now, Laura watches in panic

as the fires around her begin to bank and die.

Knowing that when the fire is out

there is nothing left for her but eternal darkness.

[ somber eerie music playing ]

LAURA:I don't want to die.

I can't die.

Not know, not here.

- You have answered my plea. - [ door shuts ]

I don't understand.

You don't have to understand, come to me.

I've been saying words, foreign words.

Words that don't make any sense to me.

Please come to me.

Laura, I shouldn't be here.

Do you want to leave?

No. No, I want to stay.

I want to be with you, but I, I don't know why.

It's because I'm going to die.

No, you can't die.

You have the power to save me.

No, I--I don't know what you're talking about.

I don't have any power.

You must do something,

There's so little time left.

I don't know what to do.

Look deep inside your soul.

And you will know, you will know.

[ chants in foreign language ]

You see?

You do have the power.

Only you have the power to restore me.

No.

No, it's not possible,

It is possible.

Look inside yourself.

You will see the flame of eternal life.

You do want to help me, don't you?

I wanna be near you always.

I don't ever want to lose you.

I told you, you would be the one I would summon.

Use your power!

Use it. Use it, don't let me die.

Please!

Please don't let me die.

- [ dramatic music playing ] - Please I beg you.

[ eerie music playing ]

[ clock chiming ]

[ knocking on door ]

All right!

Jamison.

Jamison. [ chuckles ]

Hey, what's the matter with you?

You're shaking like a leaf, huh?

I'm so frightened.

QUENTIN: Now, now, there's no need to be.

Nothing can harm you here, with me.

I've got to go to her.

- QUENTIN: To who? - My mother.

Uh, wait a minute. Uh...

You--you can't go to your mother.

JAMISON: Why not?

Well, because.

Uh, because she's sleeping.

I've got to see her.

I've got to make sure

that it isn't the way it is in my dream.

What are you talking about?

In my dream, my mother was dead!

He woke up screaming, I couldn't quiet him.

I was afraid he would make himself sick

unless he came here.

It's all right that I came, isn't it?

QUENTIN: Yes, yes, of course it is.

Well, can I see my mother now?

Listen, Jamison, why don't you go into the kitchen

and warm yourself up with a cup of tea, huh?

But there isn't anyone in the kitchen right now.

Well, then, wake somebody up.

JAMISON: What? Just for a cup of tea?

Jamison, some day you're going to be master of Collinwood

and then everyone in this house

will have to do what you want them to.

[ Quentin chuckles ]

- Really? - Really.

Now, when that day comes, you want to be prepared, don't you?

You want to know how to behave.

Yes, I better go wake someone up right now.

QUENTIN: Right now.

Well, Mr. Collins, I will be going now.

Uh, Miss Trask, before you go,

there's something we must discuss.

What do you mean Mr. Collins?

Please, huh?

Sometimes, dreams have a way of telling us a painful truth.

Painful?

I don't understand.

Oh, surely the boy's mother is not--

She's ill, very ill.

What's the matter with her?

No one knows.

Has the doctor seen her? What does he say?

Well, uh, nothing's wrong with her physically.

I feel terrible.

- Is there anything I can do? - Yes. Yes, there is.

I want you to help me prepare Jamison.

Well, help me to show him that there are people in this world

who love him and care for him very much.

Certainly, you care for him very much.

He's fortunate in that.

Oh, no, no, no.

I'm the one who's fortunate.

What do you mean?

You may hear people say, Miss Trask,

that Quentin Collins is a wicked man.

Oh, I can't believe that.

Oh, it's true, it's true.

I've committed all the sins you just read about.

Do I shock you?

No.

And more, many more.

All that can cost a man a great deal.

Spiritually, of course.

Of course.

Well then, now through Jamison,

I have a second chance,

and I want to devote my life

to being brother, uncle, friend.

Everything to that boy.

You're not wicked, Mr. Collins.

Not with the kind of concern you're showing tonight.

But it's a grave act.

That poor lady is really dying,

and there's nothing anyone can do?

That poor lady, my dear Miss Trask,

may be dead by now.

[ woman's laughter ]

As usual Quentin, you are wrong.

The poor lady never felt better.

[ laughs ]

[ suspense music playing ]

I don't understand.

What don't you understand, Miss Trask?

He said you were very ill.

He said the doctor was here.

And found nothing because there was nothing wrong with me.

Uh, what's the matter Quentin?

Aren't you pleased to see me?

- LAURA: Jamison. - Mother.

LAURA: Darling.

What in the world are you doing here

at this time of night?

I had this horrible dream, about you and it frightened me.

But Quentin told me that everything was all right.

Oh, did he tell you that?

Jamison, I think we should go into the drawing room

and have a little talk.

Miss Trask, why don't you mind your own business

instead of interfering in mine?

I'm sorry.

I--I was momentarily upset.

I said I was sorry.

Miss Trask, you seem fascinated

by the portrait of our distinguished ancestor.

[ clears throat ] What did you say, Mr. Collins?

I said, I'm sorry.

Sorry.

For what?

I was so afraid that I'd lost you again.

LAURA: My poor Jamison.

But, now that you're here, I want you to stay with us.

Darling, I can't stay.

Why not?

Because there is someone in this house

who wants very much to hurt me.

They can't do that.

One day, very soon, I will be master of this house

and no one will dare lay a hand on you.

Yes, darling, someday, but right now,

right now, I can't stay here.

Yes, you can.

- Don't you know why? - Why?

JAMISON: Because of Quentin.

He'll help you.

Oh. Do you really think so?

Yes, of course, all I have to do is ask him.

Jamison dear, I want you to go upstairs,

and put on your nightshirt.

Then come to my room.

We have a great deal more talking to do.

I'll speak to you later.

[ eerie music playing ]

[ knocking on door ]

[ knocking continues ]

Charity, come in.

I hope you don't mind.

Mind you coming here? My dear child.

I feel so ashamed of myself,

but I had to come.

I couldn't stay away.

I understand completely.

There was so much excitement tonight.

- The school burned. - Oh?

No one was hurt,

but the building was completely gutted.

My father's life work, destroyed.

I don't care.

It gave me an excuse to come to you.

You need no excuse to come here, remember that.

Come whenever you feel you must.

Oh, I want to.

I do want to.

I've never known anyone like you.

You've made me see the world as a warm, beautiful place.

Barnabas, is there a mirror?

- What? - A mirror?

I want to look into a mirror.

Why?

Because in your world,

I feel that I, too, am beautiful.

You are beautiful.

You need no mirror to know that.

Look at me, into my eyes and you will see.

I can't believe that you really need me.

LAURA: You must believe it,

because when I was dying,

it was your warmth that restored me to life.

Only you have the power to do that.

I'll do anything for you.

Anything?

Yes.

Then ask Ra for the scarab.

- And who is Ra? - Our master.

And the scarab?

It is what I need against my enemy.

What do I have to do to ask him?

Just what you did before.

No, I--I can't.

You can, and you will.

You will summon the scarab from the flames.

The scarab?

It is eternal life.

The scarab...

that will help me...

fight him.

It will help me vanquish him,

forever.

[ chants in foreign language ]

[ eerie sounds, music playing ]

Thank you Ra.

Thank you for sustaining me.

[ knocking on door ]

- Who is it? - JAMISON: Jamison.

Oh, come in darling.

[ Dirk clears throat ]

I thought you would be alone.

No, that's all right. Dirk was--was just here

helping me look for something I needed.

You can go now, Dirk.

Darling, why did you speak to Dirk like that?

Well, Quentin says that servants must know their proper place.

[ sighs ]

Jamison, Quentin is the person who is trying to hurt me.

I can't believe that.

I know you don't want to believe it, darling,

but you must or he'll hurt me again.

Oh, Jamison, you don't want that do you?

No.

Darling, you didn't have a dream tonight,

you had a vision.

You saw me dying,

because Quentin wanted me to die.

[ eerie music playing ]

I will take you back to Collinwood, Charity.

You can spend the night there.

Must we go immediately?

No, but--but soon.

I don't understand it at all.

I always thought I cared about Tim,

but this is so different somehow.

Is it?

It's as if I had no will of my own.

As if I wanted no will of my own.

As if I had to do anything you wanted me to do.

And that was the only way I could be happy.

Oh Barnabus, please make me happy.

I will.

[ dramatic music playing ]

QUENTIN: I was hoping I'd see you before you went to bed.

I wanted to talk to you.

JAMISON: Did you Quentin?

What's the matter Jamison?

- Nothing. - Well, something's wrong.

- Are you all right? - Of course.

Why shouldn't I be?

After all, someday...

Someday, this house is going to be mine

and everyone in it

will have to do exactly what I say.

Isn't that right?

Yes, that's right.

Including you, Quentin.

Do you know what I want you to do?

What? You tell me what it is and I'll do it.

I want you to get out of my sight

and stay out of my sight.

What?

Why?

I'll tell you why,

because I hate you!

[ dramatic music playing ]

Jamison, don't be silly.

Don't you call me silly.

You couldn't hate me.

You couldn't hate Quentin.

Oh, yes, I could.

But at least tell me why.

Because you hurt my mother!

I hurt...

She told you that.

Yes.

But it just isn't true, Jamison.

Look, I wouldn't hurt your mother.

She said that, that you made her get sick.

Well, sometimes, Jamison, when--when people are not well,

they--they misunderstand things.

I don't understand what you mean.

Well, you get angry at the person

who says you have to stay in bed,

or at the person who gives you bitter medicine,

but that person only does it for your own good.

Did I hear you saying something about bitter medicine, Quentin?

QUENTIN: Laura, how are you feeling?

Darling, let me take you upstairs to bed.

Laura, I think we should have a talk.

No, he might hurt you again.

It's all right, darling.

No, it-it's all right.

You go upstairs to bed.

Are you sure?

I promise you I'll be safe.

[ eerie music playing ]

QUENTIN: It's disgusting,

watching you pretending to be a good mother.

And what about you pretending to be

an even better uncle to your nephew,

the heir to Collinwood?

I'm not pretending. I'm close to him,

because I feel neither his father nor his mother

gives him what he needs.

Say what you like about his father,

but his mother gives him exactly what he he needs.

Yes, by trickery and lies.

Lies?

I told him you hurt me

and that you'll hurt me again, is that a lie?

Oh no, that's the truth.

And what about the rest of the truth?

About us being together, you and I, huh?

And shall I tell him the real meaning

of the little games you've taught him?

How you seek evil in the darkness

for your heartless schemes?

- Heartless? - Yes!

You're the one who's heartless.

Oh no, you are heartless. I said that and that and I have--

- DIRK: Listen, sir... - No!

- [ both yelling ] - No!

h*-h*, so this is really what you've come down to, huh?

One of the servants.

You surprise me, Laura.

You always pretended to be such a lady.

No, Dirk, he's leaving!

Yes, I'm going. Goodnight.

He always talks as if he was Lord of the Manor.

That's one of Quentin's many little self deceptions.

Let's not waste time talking about him. Hmm?

No.

[ knocking on door ]

I'll get it.

I saw Miss Trask wandering around the estate.

She seemed a trifle confused.

Could you see to it that she gets a room?

Yes, I'll see to it.

Miss Trask, I thought you'd gone into town.

I started to, but I got lost.

Barnabas was kind enough to bring me back here.

So, you're Barnabas Collins?

I'm Laura Collins.

I said I'm Laura Collins.

Is something the matter?

Edward never told me

that you were as young and beautiful as you are.

No, Edward wouldn't.

It's very nice of you to say so.

Well, it's late, very late.

Goodnight.

Barnabas, what's the matter?

What's the matter?

It cannot be.

What cannot be?

I saw her.

I heard her voice.

I touched her hand.

But that woman has been dead for over years.
