[Julia narrating] - The dawn of a new day at Collinwood.

Most of those who live in the great house are still asleep,

but for Barnabas Collins, there can be no sleep

until he learns what happened the night before

in the family mausoleum at Eagle Hill Cemetery.

There, a young man,

afflicted by a curse that transforms him

from man to beast,

has spent the night locked in a secret room.

- Chris!

Chris, are you in here?

Chris!

Chris, can you hear me? - What? What --

Oh, Mr. Collins. - It's all right.

It's all right. Be calm.

Just take a look around for a moment.

- Oh. Oh yes, your, your secret mausoleum.

How long have you been here?

- I just arrived.

- What happened last night?

Did I k*ll somebody again? - No.

You k*lled no one. Our plan worked.

You remained in this room all night.

- Thank God.

- Now, come.

I'll take you back to the cottage.

We can work out the next plan.

♪♪

[eerie music] ♪♪

[phone ringing]

What about tonight?

- Well, I don't know. That all depends.

You see if the moon is still within its cycle of fullness,

you're going to have to lock me up again in that mausoleum.

It just all depends on - on what's going to happen.

You've got to stop me from k*lling somebody again!

You've got to stop me from k*lling --

- How long have you been here?

- Well, I got up at dawn and came here to wait for you.

- Why?

- Don't look so alarmed, Chris.

I know your secret.

- You didn't tell me about this.

- Well, I had planned to tell you today.

- Who else knows? - No one.

- How do you know she didn't tell somebody?

- Because I haven't told anyone, Chris,

and I don't intend to.

- You mean you are willing to help me, too?

- I'm willing to try, but I think you should know

that I made the decision very reluctantly. - How do you mean?

- Well, I was against Barnabas helping you.

I think it's a very dangerous thing to do.

- You should have listened to her.

She's right, you know.

- Right or wrong, I have made my decision

and I intend to follow it through.

- Yes but how?

That is the question now. What are we going to do?

- Well, first of all,

we have to wait one more night

before we can do anything.

- You mean the transformation could - could happen again?

- Yes.

- I don't understand.

- I didn't understand either,

but I realized that the phase that Chris goes through

isn't always the same.

It could be anywhere from one to four nights.

- Does it ever last longer than four nights?

- It never has,

but I live in constant fear that it might.

- Chris, do you have any idea at all of - of

how this happened to you?

- It just happened. That's all.

- When did it start?

- Look, Chris has told me his whole history.

I think we should go back to Collinwood.

I'll talk to you about it on the way back.

We should let him get some rest today.

- And I want you both to know how very grateful I am

for what you're trying so hard to do for me.

I just wish that I could be optimistic

about the possible results.

- You have every reason to be optimistic.

- Why?

Well, by being confined to the mausoleum,

at least, you didn't hurt anybody.

We have been able to contain your violence.

And that's a big step forward.

- Yeah. Yeah, it is.

- And tomorrow, we'll take the next step.

- What will that be?

- Well, I'm going to start with a series of tests

to see about your blood chemistry

and see if there is anything that relates

to the transformation.

- Do you think that might help?

- I think it's possible, yes.

- Come Julia, we better go.

I will be back before sundown. - OK.

- And I'll see you first thing tomorrow morning.

- Yeah, I'll be waiting for you.

♪♪

[knocking on door]

- Chris! You're all right?

- Yeah, I'm all right.

Was something supposed to happen to me?

- Well, I - I don't know. I --

- David, what's the matter with you?

- Nothing, I just --

I was taking a hike through the woods and --

and I thought I saw someone sneaking out of here.

- Well, you saw somebody, Barnabas and Julia,

but I don't think they were exactly sneaking.

They were just here visiting me.

- Oh.

So early in the morning?

- Why not? What are you doing up so early?

- Well, I always get up this early,

didn't you know that?

- Well, no, I didn't happen to know that.

- You know you've got this place looking pretty nice.

- Well, thanks. I didn't do a thing to it.

It's been like this ever since I moved in.

- Oh.

- I'm glad Carolyn talked you into moving in here.

I think it would be good for Amy to have you around.

- Yeah, I hope so.

- You like Carolyn, don't you?

- Well, yes, sure I do.

- No, I don't mean like --

you're serious about her, right?

- Now, wait a minute. - She's serious about you, too.

I can always tell about those things with Carolyn.

- Now, David, hold on.

Let's you and I make a deal.

You are not going to pry into any of my affairs

and I won't pry into yours.

All right?

- That's fine with me. - OK.

- Hey, is it true that you might come and work here?

On the estate?

- Oh, wow, you really learn fast, don't you?

- Well, that's something that I'd find out

sooner or later, anyway. Isn't it?

- Ah, OK, yeah, I guess you're right.

All right, listen.

Carolyn has offered me a job and I haven't decided yet

whether or not to take it. I may.

Now, are there any more questions, Your Honor?

- I can't think of any. - Well, how would you like a soda?

- I'd love one.

- Come on, I'll stoke you full of a soda

to give you some energy for your hike through the woods.

[door closing]

Well, I tell ya, I like a carbonated grape soda myself.

It reminds me of the vineyards in the south of France.

Now, David -- - Yes?

- I don't mean to be rude, but once you drink that soda,

you've got to split because I've got to get some sleep.

- Sleep?

Didn't you just wake up?

- No, I was up all night.

- All night, how come?

- You are just going to keep asking me questions,

aren't you?

- I'm sorry, I forgot about our deal.

Why were you up all night?

- I couldn't sleep.

- Oh, why not?

- Well, I just - I just couldn't seem

to do it somehow, you know?

- Were you worried about something?

- David, for -- - Maybe, you should see a doctor.

Aunt Elizabeth is always talking about how important sleep is.

- David?

- Uh-hmm.

- You finish your soda.

- I guess I have.

That means I have to go, right?

- If you stay, how am I going to get some sleep?

- Well, it was nice talking to you.

- Yeah, it's nice to see you, too.

- Thanks for the soda. - Not at all.

Take it easy, now. - I will.

[door opening]

- How long have you been up?

- A few hours.

- Well, where have you been?

- I went out on a hike.

- Why didn't you wake me? I would've gone with you.

- I just wanted to go alone.

- David, why are you angry at me?

- Who said that I was angry?

- Well, you must be. Ever since last night,

when you said you didn't want to play the game,

you've been different.

- You're just imagining things. That's all.

- No, I'm not.

Ever since you walked in that door,

you haven't been a bit friendly.

What have I done, David?

- Are you just going to stand there

and ask me stupid questions all day?

- Well, I just want to know why you don't want to play

the game anymore?

- If you really must know, go upstairs and ask Quentin.

- I did!

I went up to the West Wing last night after everyone was asleep

and I asked him, but he wouldn't answer me.

He wouldn't say a word to me, David!

[church bell ringing]

- It's almost :.

- How do you feel?

- I wish you would stop asking me that.

- I'm sorry.

- Is the sun anywhere near the horizon yet?

- Part of it is already below the horizon.

The moon should be rising within the half hour.

á* We won't have to wait that long.

- Why not?

- There won't be any transformation tonight.

- How do you know? - Well, you see,

I always start feeling a pain

just as the sun hits the horizon.

I don't feel anything right now.

- Well, I think we should wait anyway just to be safe.

- No, no. It really isn't necessary.

I have gone through it so many times.

I really know all about it.

I have all the phases of it quite under control

and knowledge.

- Well, I can imagine how - how relieved you must feel.

- Yeah, relieved. I'm a little tired, too.

- Didn't you get any rest today?

- Oh some, but you know, on days like today,

I can never rest really for all the anxiety

and tension of wondering what's going to happen.

- I can understand that.

- Well, I feel a little better though knowing that nothing -

knowing that nothing is going to happen tonight.

In fact, I think I might celebrate a little.

Have a little drink. How about you?

- Oh, I think I'll get back to Collinwood.

I would like to tell Julia the good news.

- Well, not all of it is good.

Next month, we'll have to go through at least

another night of the same thing.

- But a lot can happen in a month.

- Maybe, nothing will happen, too.

- Oh, I don't mean to be pessimistic about it.

If we don't succeed this first month,

it won't be because we haven't tried. - That's true.

And you know I'm very, very grateful to you

for everything you're doing.

You are a good man, Mr. Collins.

- There have been those who didn't think so.

- Well, we know they are wrong, very wrong.

- Goodnight, Chris. - Goodnight.

[thinking] A month,

you have no idea, Mr. Collins,

how short a month could be!

Oh, no.

Oh, no! It can't be!

It's impossible!

God, help me! No, not this time!

Oh... Oh...

- You're back early. Everything must have gone well.

- Yes. He's going to be all right tonight.

What have we got there?

"The Lycanthrope of Aunjere."

- As you know, lycanthropy is the study of werewolves.

- Yes.

- I thought that I'd better do some research, too,

before we begin working on Chris.

So, I picked that book up today.

- Do you think it will be of any help?

- Well, I've already found out that there --

there are two schools of thought about werewolves.

One is that a man becomes a wolf.

The other holds that it's - it's a mental disease,

lycanthropia,

and he doesn't really make the transformation;

he only behaves like a wolf.

- Well, we know it isn't mental with Chris.

After all, we've seen the animal he became.

- Yes, that's true,

but what I really wanted the book for were -

were to find out the various ways that that someone

can become a werewolf.

So far, I've only come across two.

- And what are they?

- Well, one is if someone is bitten by another werewolf

and survives,

and the other is if it's part of a curse.

- Well, if he had been attacked and bitten,

he would have remembered and told us.

He must have been afflicted by a curse.

- Well, we'll have to find that out.

Whichever it is. - Yes.

- I'm going back to the study and finish this

before I go to bed.

Goodnight, Barnabas.

- Goodnight, Julia.

[writhing in pain]

[crying]

- Who's in this room?

[crying continues]

Who - who is it?

What - what are you doing here?

- Carolyn! Is that you?

Wait!

Who are you?

- Barnabas!

Barnabas, did you see her?

- Yes.

I thought at first she was Carolyn.

- She was in my room just now.

- Who is she?

- I don't know.

But - but do you see her anywhere?

- What was she doing in your room?

She's over there by the edge of the woods.

- She's on the path of Chris's cottage.

- Julia!

[crying]

Julia!

Are you sure you saw her get inside? - Yes.

I saw her open the door and walk in.

Chris!

- What's happened?

Is he all right?

- Barnabas, he's - he's dying!
