- The great halls of Collinwood echo
with the rumble of thunder.
The walls are illuminated by flashes of lightning.
A storm rages as if all the elements of nature
were in conflict.
Inside the great house, two angry spirits
are in conflict, spirits of those long since dead.
One of them has lured two innocent children
to a deserted storage room in the west wing of the house.
In that room, unseen terror awaits them.
- I thought I heard something.
- I didn't.
David!
- Somebody pushed that over!
It must have been her!
Whoever she is, she wants us to go back.
- Maybe we should go back?
- No, Amy, we can't let her stop us.
- You really want to go on?
- Yes, I do.
- Will you take my hand?
- Is anyone in here?
- Quentin?
Quentin?
- I guess he isn't here.
- I was so sure he'd be here.
- I guess you were wrong.
- What do we do now?
- Leave, I guess.
No point in staying here now.
- All right.
- It's stuck.
I can't get it open.
- Try!
- I'm trying but it's no use.
It won't even budge.
Oh, Amy, we're locked in here.
We're locked in here and we can't get out.
[theme music]
- Who could have locked the door?
- I don't know.
- Maybe it was Quentin?
- Why would Quentin lock us in here?
- Because he wants us to stay here.
- They why won't he appear to us?
- I don't know.
Maybe it isn't time yet?
- I-- I hope we don't have to stay here the whole night.
- The whole night?
- Ghosts only appear at night, Amy.
Everybody knows that.
- You mean, we might have to stay in this room all night?
- Yes.
We might.
- I don't want to stay in this room all night.
This isn't fun anymore.
I'm getting scared.
- Don't be scared, Amy.
Only babies get scared.
- You're scared, too.
I can tell.
- No, I'm not.
- What if Quentin never really appeared?
What if we really are locked in this room?
How will anybody find us?
- Don't worry, we'll get out of here somehow.
[screaming]
- Carolyn, what is it?
What's the matter?
- What's all the commotion?
What's happening?
- I had a terrible dream.
- A dream?
- I heard a woman's voice.
She said, "They'll die."
She kept saying it over and over again.
Then I saw two little shadowy figures...
children...
dead.
Amy and David.
- Carolyn, that was only a nightmare.
- No.
- Of course, it was.
- It was more than a dream.
It was too vivid to have been a dream.
It was-- it was some kind of warning.
- That's nonsense.
- Go to David's room.
Make sure he's all right. - Carolyn.
- Please?
- All right, dear, I'll do it to humor you,
and maybe we can all get some sleep.
- Mother, something is wrong.
- Nothing's wrong.
- I know it.
- You just had a bad dream, that's all.
- I hope so.
- We shouldn't have held that seance last night.
It was a frightening experience for you
and still affecting you.
- Why did I say those words when I went into the trance?
Why did I talk about a curse? What does that mean?
- I don't know. - They've gone.
- Gone?
- David and Amy.
Both of them are missing from their rooms.
- Something's happened to them, I know it!
- Now, don't panic, either of you.
You know how David likes to go about the house late at night.
He's probably exploring and maybe he took Amy with him.
- We've got to find them.
- We must search the house.
- Of course, he's got to be in the house.
They've got to be here.
They wouldn't go out in the middle of a thunderstorm.
- I'll go with you.
Just let me get my robe.
- What is it?
- Look.
There's something appearing in the mirror.
Can't you see it?
- It looks like lettering.
Jamison!
- Our father's name.
What does it mean?
What could it mean?
- I don't know.
I don't know.
- It's no use, David, you can't get it open.
- I guess you're right.
- What are we going to
do? - I don't know.
- What's that?
- It's just an old armoire.
- A what?
- It's something they used for a closet a long time ago.
We've got lots of them in this house.
- Is there anything inside it?
- Not inside of that one.
Just cobwebs.
- What's over here?
What's in that chest?
- I don't know.
I've never seen it before.
- It looks like a toy chest.
Maybe it's full of toys.
- Let's see.
Oh, it's nothing but old clothes.
- Let me see them.
Look it!
It's a boy's suit!
- Yeah, it is.
- And look!
A girl's dress!
I wonder who these clothes belong to?
- Probably some of my ancestors.
- This dress would fit me.
And I bet that suit would fit you.
- It might!
- Maybe we could put these clothes on and play dress
up sometime.
- No.
I don't like games like that.
I wish something-- something would happen.
- David...
listen...
- To what?
- The music.
Can't you hear it?
[music]
- Quentin must be playing that music.
He must be someplace near by.
- They aren't there.
- You searched the entire basement?
- Every inch of it.
There's not a sign of them.
- You searched all the rooms?
- Except the west wing.
- No, they wouldn't be up there.
I locked the door myself the other day
and I still have the key.
- Maybe David found another key.
- Well, that's possible.
We can give it a look.
- It's coming from behind this wall.
- What's behind that wall?
Another room?
- I don't know of any room that's behind that wall,
and I've been through all the rooms in the west wing.
- The music's getting louder.
- I know it is.
- Why is Quentin playing that music?
- Maybe he's trying to tell us something?
Maybe he's trying to tell us that he's behind that wall?
- Why doesn't he just appear to us?
- Maybe he can't.
Maybe we must go to him.
- How can we?
We can't go through a wall.
What are you doing?
- Listen.
- To what?
- That sound.
The hollow sound.
It means this wall isn't solid.
- It isn't?
- No.
There's some kind of space behind it.
- It's still locked.
- Then they're not in there.
- No, obviously not.
- Uncle Roger, I think we should search the west wing anyway.
- What for? - I don't know.
I just--
- But, darling, what's the point?
- Your mother's right.
- David can do a lot of things but he
can't get past a locked door.
- No, I suppose he can't.
- Come on, we're wasting time.
- The music.
- It's fading away.
- I wonder why?
- Maybe...
maybe Quentin has told us all that he wants us to know.
- What do you mean?
- Maybe he just wants us to know that he's behind that wall.
- Why doesn't he just appear to us then?
- Maybe he can't.
Maybe we must go to him.
- Well, how can we?
We can't go through a wall.
What are you doing?
- Listen.
- To what?
- The hollow sound.
That means that this wall isn't solid.
- It isn't?
- No.
There must be some kind of space behind it.
- You mean, it isn't a real wall?
- No, it's a false wall.
It's covering something up.
- Do-- do you think Quentin is behind it?
- I don't know, Amy, but something is.
- They can't be in the house.
We've searched every place they could be.
They must be outside.
- In this storm? - Where else could they be?
I'm going out and search the grounds.
- I'll go with you.
- No, Liz, I won't have you going out
in this kind of weather.
- Shall I phone Chris and tell him about Amy?
- No, not yet.
Later on.
Perhaps I'll find them.
- All right.
- David's wandered off before but why tonight of all nights?
In the middle of a storm?
- I don't know, Mother?
I--
- What's the matter?
- A hand.
A hand.
- What is she saying?
- I felt--
I felt a hand pushing me, pushing me towards the door.
- What?
- It's Magda.
She must want us to go someplace.
- Carolyn.
She must want us to go to the only place
in the house we haven't searched: the west wing.
- We've already decided that there
was no point in going there. - I think we should.
- Well, I refuse to waste time.
- If you won't go, Uncle Roger, I'll go alone.
- Well, you're certainly not going alone.
If you persist in this, I'll have to go with you.
- That clock.
Who could have pushed it down?
- It may have been that way for years.
- No.
It was standing upright when I was up here last time.
- It doesn't necessarily mean something.
- No, I suppose not.
- They're outside.
We'd better hide.
- No, we can call to them.
They can let us out of here.
- They probably have a key.
They come in, they'll leave the door unlocked,
then we can get out and they'll never know we were in here.
- Come on.
- Uncle Roger, I think we should look in here.
- Why here?
- I don't know.
I just have a feeling.
- Well, I suppose we might as well.
- Roger? - Yes?
- I think I heard a noise. - Coming from where?
- Down the hall.
- Well, let's go have a look.
- I thought for sure they were going to catch us.
- I didn't hear a key turn in the lock.
How'd they get in?
- Maybe you didn't hear the lock click.
- It must be open now.
- Is it?
- I'll see.
- Oh, no.
It's locked again.
- I'm not surprised.
- You're not?
- No.
It's locked because Quentin wants us to stay here.
He wants us to do something for him.
- What?
What does he want us to do?
- Let him out.
- How can we let him out?
- Well, you said the wall wasn't thick,
and I saw something while we were exploring.
Do you think we could break through the wall with this?
- A crowbar!
- Maybe we can't.
You'd have to be pretty strong to take down a whole wall.
- Maybe you're not strong enough but I am.
- Do you really want to do it?
- Sure. Why not?
- Do you really?
- I just said I did.
- Maybe we shouldn't.
We'd get scolded if anybody knew.
- I don't care.
I'm going to do it anyway.
- Well, that was a waste of time.
- I still have a feeling they're someplace in this house.
- Carolyn, how can they be?
We've searched every single room,
and there hasn't been a trace of them.
- I know.
- Well, I'm through with wasting time.
I'm going out on the grounds in search.
- Maybe they sneaked into Barnabas' house
after he went to sleep. I better go see.
- Mother.
- Yes?
- Something, some force, was trying to push me
toward the west wing.
But why?
- It looks like a door.
- Amy, that means there's another room on that side.
- Yes.
- I don't think we better open it.
- Well, I don't want to if you don't.
- I think we should go back downstairs.
- We can't.
The door to this room is locked, remember?
- What are we going to do?
- David, look!
- Give me the flashlight.
- What's in there?
- I don't know.
I can't see much from here.
- Should we go in?
- Do you want to?
- If you do.
- All right.
I'll lead the way.
