[eerie music]
- Even in the warm light of day, the effects of evil forces
can be felt and seen in and around the great house
at Collinwood.
In grave danger and too weak to move on,
Barnabas Collins has realized he is lost in the woods
and may die before help can come.
- Oh, Vicki, I need you.
I need you.
I can't make it alone.
Vicki, please hear me.
Hear me, Vicki.
- But through some strange mental bond
that exists between them, Victoria Winters
has sensed that Barnabas is in desperate need of her.
[breathing anxiously]
- Vicki, hear me!
Hear me.
[birds chirping]
[moaning]
- Barnabas!
- Vicki...
- What's happened to you?
- You heard me.
You've come to find me.
- Yes.
- You've come to find me but too late.
- No!
Barnabas, it isn't!
It isn't!
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
Barnabas, can-- can you hear me?
Can you speak to me?
- Vicki...
- Barnabas, can you tell me what happened to you?
- Too horrible...
- What is?
- Vicki, you must hide me quickly.
- Hide you?
- There is so little time.
- But you're sick.
You-- you need a doctor.
- No.
- Yes, I-- I have to get you to Collinwood and--
and then we'll find Julia.
- Please, Vicki.
Julia can't help me.
No doctor can help me.
- I don't understand.
- You're-- you're the only one who can help me.
Please, don't disappoint me.
- Oh, I promise you I won't.
What-- what is it you want me to do?
- I want you to take me someplace
where no one will find me.
- Why?
- I-- I can't tell you.
Please, just trust me.
- Barnabas, there are a great many people
that are worried about you.
If-- if I hide you, what will I tell them?
- I don't know but it doesn't matter now.
The important thing is to just get me away from here.
- I don't know where I can take you.
Yes.
Yes, I-- I know a place.
- Where?
- There's a secret door to the West Wing of Collinwood
which no one has used for years. - Are you sure?
- Yes, I'm-- I'm positive. But how will I get you there?
Do you think you can walk? - I'll try.
- I'll help you.
- I need to gain strength before it becomes dark again.
[wind howling]
- Maybe.
Maybe she'll come to me tonight.
Maybe.
[doorknob rattles]
- Hello, Joe.
How are you?
- All right.
Listen, Julia, could you do me a favor and fix those blinds?
- Sure.
- How's Barnabas?
- He's gone.
- Where did he go?
- I thought you might tell me that, Joe.
- How should I know?
- You know a lot more than you've been telling.
I know that you've been under the spell of a vampire.
[coughs]
- I don't know what you're talking about.
- Yes, you do, Joe.
And I know how much you've suffered
because it happened to me, too.
You don't believe me, do you?
- No.
- It was Tom Jennings.
Yes.
Yes, I know what he was. I was his victim.
- Do you know what happened to him?
- The same thing that must happen to the one who's
put you under his spell, Joe.
He was found at dawn in his coffin
with a stake driven through his heart.
The same thing must happen again, Joe.
It's the only way you can be free.
Tell me who it is, Joe. Please.
Please, tell me.
- It's no use.
Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could.
- Joe.
Joe, you must summon up all your willpower and tell me.
- Julia, if you've been through this,
you know how impossible that is.
[sighs]
- Yes.
Yes, I-- I-- I do.
But you're-- you're not my last hope, Joe.
- You mean-- you mean there have been others besides Barnabas
and me?
- I only know that--
that this-- this creature couldn't
survive without protection from-- from someone.
- What does that mean?
- You tell me, Joe. [coughs]
- I don't know.
- You tell me who's been behind all this.
And don't try to pretend you don't
know because I know you do.
- Look, I think you better get out of here right now.
- Is it Nicholas Blair?
[laughs]
- That's ridiculous.
- All right, Joe.
If it's ridiculous, then--
then it won't matter if I go and talk to him
and ask him a few questions.
- You can't go to that house.
- Why not?
- Because-...
Listen to me, Julia.
Stay away from that man.
Don't go near him, do you understand?
- Why, Joe?
Because it's dangerous? - I can't--
I can't tell you why.
You've just got to believe what I'm saying.
I can't tell you why.
- It's all right, Joe.
I understand.
You've told me a lot more than I ever expected you would.
- What-- what are you going to do?
- I-- I have no choice.
No matter how dangerous it is, I've
got to have a showdown with Nicholas Blair.
[dramatic music]
[door opens and closes]
- I didn't think we were going to make it.
- Well, now maybe you can tell me.
- What?
- Why you want to hide from everyone.
- Please, Vicki, trust me.
- If you're sick, you should have a doctor.
[dramatic music]
[knocking]
- Dr. Hoffman!
- Good afternoon, Mr. Blair.
May I come in?
- By all means.
This is an unexpected pleasure, doctor.
I, uh-- I've been meaning to call you,
you know, for some time to thank you for that delightful evening
that we spent at the old house.
- Mr. Blair, I suggest we level with each other.
- I beg your pardon?
- Now, let's stop playing games.
I know what you are and you know why I'm here.
- Dr. Hoffman, I never play games.
- Nonsense.
You've been playing a very cruel game with all of us
ever since you left Collinwood.
Now, let's not waste time.
Now, I know you were behind the experiment from the beginning.
- The experiment?
- Yes.
The experiment that created an artificial mate for Adam.
I also know what you've done to Barnabas, or had done to him.
- Well, then perhaps you'd be good enough to tell me.
- Barnabas is the victim of a vampire.
[laughs]
- A vampire.
Uh-huh.
[laughs]
Well, you certainly do have a fertile imagination, doctor.
- Then, for whatever your reasons,
you are protecting that vampire.
- I am?
- But what I don't understand is--
is why you've allowed it to go so far.
I didn't think you were a man who was
subject to serious mistakes.
- Dr. Hoffman, of course it goes without saying
that I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about,
but there is one thing that you said that is quite accurate:
I don't make serious mistakes.
- Then there is something that you obviously are not aware of.
- Hmm?
What might that be?
- Barnabas Collins disappeared early last evening.
- Disappeared?
- Yes.
He was in a very weakened condition.
He was probably even weaker today.
And if he's not found and saved by tonight, he may die.
- You, uh, say you don't know where he is at the moment?
- If I did, I wouldn't be here, would I?
[clears throat]
- I, uh--
I fail to understand, doctor, what
made you think that I could help you.
- Well, then I'll tell you.
You have a plan involving Adam and his mate.
[chuckles]
But for your plan to succeed, it is imperative
that Adam be alive and healthy.
And you know as well as I do that if Barnabas Collins dies,
Adam will die, too.
- Have you finished, Dr. Hoffman?
- Not quite.
- Well, I have.
If you'll excuse me, I am afraid that I have
a great deal of work to do.
- I think it can wait for one moment.
- I'm afraid it can't.
I'm very sorry that I haven't been able to help you.
[chuckles]
- I do believe I've upset you.
[chuckles]
- Don't be absurd.
- Oh, I'm not.
You don't seem quite as self-assured as you
were when I first arrived.
[both chuckle]
- If you will excuse me, doctor, I'm a very busy man,
and I really must get to my work.
- Oh, yes.
Yes, it is-- it is getting late in the day, isn't it?
- Don't try my patience, doctor.
Don't do it.
- Is Barnabas Collins in this house?
- He is not.
- Do you know where he is?
- I haven't the vaguest idea.
- Then I would suggest that it would
be to our mutual advantage to find out.
- I will do everything I possibly can to help you,
doctor.
Good day.
- Good day, Mr. Blair.
- Dr. Hoffman, I rather admire you
for coming here this afternoon.
- But-- what--
what do you mean?
- You know what I mean.
[suspenseful music]
[wind whistling]
[birds chirping]
- He was lying when he said he didn't know where Barnabas was.
He must know.
Or maybe he doesn't.
He was anxious to get me out of there
after he went to the window and looked out at the sky.
The sun will be going down soon, then
he'll take some kind of action.
But what?
I must stay.
[dramatic music]
- Vicki?
- It's all right, Barnabas. I'm still here.
- What time is it? - I don't know.
You've been asleep for hours.
- Has the sun gone down yet?
Tell me if it's dark.
- The sun is just setting now.
- You shouldn't have let me sleep so long.
- Well, you were very weak.
You needed the rest.
- Yes, I know that.
- And now that you've had some rest,
perhaps you can tell me what happened.
- Please, wait and listen to me.
You must do something for me immediately.
- What?
- Find a cross and bring it to me.
- A cross?
- Yes, please hurry.
- Barnabas, you-- you're not afraid you're going to die,
are you?
- Just bring me a cross, Vicki. - I don't understand.
- There's no need for you to understand.
Now-- now get it and bring it to me as quickly as possible.
- All right.
[suspenseful music]
[door opens and closes]
[creaking]
- Good evening, Nicholas.
My, you're looking very chipper these days.
I think Maggie Evans' company has had a good effect on you.
Are you...
Are you going to see her this evening?
Is something troubling you, Nicholas?
Can't you answer me?
- Would you really like an answer?
- Why, yes.
- All right.
I'll give you one.
[slap]
[scream]
[sobs]
- What did you do that for?
- Don't insult me by asking stupid questions.
- I don't know what you're talking about.
- I'm talking about Barnabas Collins
and what you've done to him and what you're doing to my plans
and how you had better undo them immediately.
Do you understand?
- Yes.
- All right.
Where is Barnabas Collins?
- I-- I left him in a hut.
- Where?
- In the woods between Collinwood and the old house.
- Well, now.
I don't have to ask you why you took him there, do I?
- You haven't been fair with me.
- Under ordinary circumstances, I
would let you have your precious Barnabas.
What you see in him is your own peculiar problem, not mine,
but these are not ordinary circumstances and you know it.
If anything happens to Barnabas Collins, Adam will die.
Now, if that happens--
- You don't have to say the rest.
- Oh, but apparently I do.
You see, I won't just punish you.
I've done that before and it doesn't seem to affect you.
No, Angelique.
If you've gone too far this time--
[clicks teeth]
Well...
Now, I want you to get Barnabas back to the old house tonight.
I want you to leave him there and I
want you to stay away from him.
- Yes, Nicholas.
- I expect you to be back here waiting for me when I return.
- Why?
Where are you going?
- Well, Maggie Evans is expecting me
and you've already made me late.
- When it comes to your own interests,
you do very well, don't you?
- Well, that's, uh, one of the advantages
of being the master, my dear.
[dramatic music]
[wind whistling]
[birds calling]
- There's no reason for me to stay here.
If Nicholas intended to do anything about Barnabas,
he's done it by now.
[door opens and closes]
Nicholas.
Why is he leaving now?
Where can he be going?
I could've been wrong.
The vampire could be hiding somewhere else
and Nicholas is going there now.
Should I follow him, or--
or try and have a look inside the house?
If Barnabas is in there, I might be able to get him out
before Nicholas comes back.
[door opens and closes]
Someone else is coming out.
A woman.
She's coming this way.
[wind whistling]
[birds calling]
[gasps]
It's...
It's Angelique Collins!
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
