- It is late at night at Collinwood.

But for one man, there will be no more sleep this night.

For he has had a strange and perhaps prophetic

dream, a dream which has warned of tragedy

in the life of a young woman.

Now, his task is to warn her and hope

that she will listen and change her plans for the future.

- I thought you'd gone to bed.

- I was but something woke me up a few minutes ago.

- What?

- Vicki, will you please come into the drawing room?

- What for?

- We have to discuss something immediately.

- Roger, what's the matter with you?

- Vicki, what I'm about to say to you may sound strange, but--

- But what?

- Have you and Jeff set a date for your marriage?

- Well, not exactly.

We've decided it's going to be sometime next month.

Why?

- You must cancel it immediately.

Vicki, if you marry Jeff Clark, it

will be the most tragic mistake of your life.

[theme music]

- Roger, I can't believe you're serious.

- I am!

You mustn't marry him!

- You sound as if you're warning me.

- That is precisely what I'm doing!

- Then I'd like you to tell me why.

- Well, it's a dream I just had.

- A dream? - Yes.

I woke up so terrified for you that I

couldn't go back to sleep.

I knew I had to warn you.

- About what?

- About you and Jeff Clark.

I dreamed of your wedding.

I was escorting you.

I had your arm in mine.

You looked so radiant and happy.

Wedding music was playing, and we came down

into the drawing room.

Jeff Clark was waiting for you.

The two of you, about to take vows...

and then...

- And then?

- When I turned to look at you, beneath the bridal veil,

there was only a skull.

- Roger.

- I'm telling you, it's the truth.

I woke up trembling not minutes ago.

- I don't believe you didn't have the dream but--

- But then what don't you believe?

- It's just that it's not like you to react in such a way.

You, who don't believe in dreams, who don't

believe in the supernatural.

- This dream was like reality itself.

It was like a warning that something terrible

was going to happen if steps weren't taken to change it.

- Look here, Roger.

I find it very hard to believe that a nightmare, no matter how

frightening or realistic it was, could change your mind

about my marriage to Jeff.

There must be some other reason.

- There is no other reason, Vicki.

- Well, I think there has to be.

And I don't think it's anything to do with the way

you feel about me, so that only leaves Jeff.

Why do you feel hostilities toward him?

- I tell you, I don't.

- Oh, you can deny it all you want,

but I'm not going to accept your denials.

I think you should have the decency to tell me what it is.

- Oh, I was aware when I came downstairs

that it wouldn't be easy to convince you.

Will you at least think about it?

- Jeff and I love each other, we're going to be married,

and that's all there is to it.

- It will be the greatest mistake of your life.

- What do you have against him?

Will you tell me that?

- Nothing!

- There's got to be more to it than just a dream.

Do you know something I don't know?

- No, but I do think his behavior has been strange

these last few weeks.

- What are you talking about?

- Well, the way he's treated you in the past

is something less than the way a gentleman should treat a lady.

- I have forgiven him for the past, and I thought you had,

too.

- And it's possible that we both made a mistake to forgive him.

- Oh, will you stop making these a*usive remarks

and tell me what's on your mind?

- Very well.

It is my opinion that Mr. Jeff Clark is not as trustworthy

as he should be.

- You mean, that you don't trust him?

- That's right. - Why not?

- I-- I can't tell you that.

- You can't tell me that because you don't know.

- Vicki.

- I don't want to hear any more about it.

I've heard enough on the subject.

Good night.

- Hello, Roger.

- Oh, good evening, Julia.

You're not just getting in, are you?

- Yes. Yes, I am.

- Would you care for one?

- No, thank you.

It would only make me sleepy and I must stay awake.

- What for?

It's already late and you look like you

haven't slept for some time.

- I haven't.

- Why not?

- Roger...

Roger, I'm terribly worried about Barnabas.

- Barnabas? What's the matter?

- He hasn't-- he hasn't been himself since Joe Haskell tried

to strangle him.

- Well, I shouldn't be surprised after an experience like that.

- Early this afternoon, I made Barnabas go to bed.

I said it was imperative that he get some rest.

- And he refused?

- No.

No, he went to bed but then later,

after sunset, I went to his room to take some food to him

and he was gone.

- Gone?

- I've looked everywhere for him, Roger,

but he's just completely disappeared.

Where have you brought me?

What is this place?

- You're near the sea.

Far away from anyone who may want to find you.

And this is where you'll stay until it's time for you and I,

for us to go away together.

- No.

No.

No.

No.

- Stay where you are, Barnabas.

- I must get up.

- No.

No, I don't want you to stand.

You won't be as steady on your feet as you think.

- What-- what are you going to do with me?

- Don't you know?

- You said something about going away together.

- Yes.

Yes, just the two of us.

- You can't do that.

Nicholas won't let you.

- Nicholas.

Nicholas will have no idea what's happened to us.

- I don't understand.

After all these years of hating me.

- It's what I've always wanted.

- In spite of how you feel about me?

- Regardless of what I am, what I have been,

I'm still a woman, Barnabas.

I think and feel like a woman.

I've hated things you've done, but I've never

hated you yourself.

How could I?

The memory of a night in Martinique

has never left my mind.

- Angelique.

- You came to me that night, and I was full of love for you.

How else could I have given you so much if myself?

I knew then that no power in the universe

could prevent us from one day keeping

the pledge we made that night.

- I made no pledge.

- Not every pledge is made with words, Barnabas.

- You'll never succeed.

Nicholas will-- will find out, and--

- No, Nicholas is too busy with his own involvements.

He won't have time to find out.

In a few days, I'll have all the preparations made, and then...

Barnabas?

Barnabas, can you hear me?

- You're going to turn me into what you are?

- Yes.

- Well, it's too late.

You moved too quickly, you've--

you've been too anxious. - What do you mean?

- You-- you can't afford to let me die now,

before you're ready.

Dawn is approaching.

- You're not going to die yet.

- I will if you don't leave me.

[rooster crowing]

- Yes, perhaps you're right.

I must be more careful.

I must keep you alive until the moment comes.

- I hope I disappoint you and die before dawn.

- No, you'll survive this night, and a few others,

but you'll be too weak to move.

That's why I brought you here.

I needed a place where you'd be safe

while I slept during the day.

And this place is perfect.

- You are not going to leave me here?

- It's nearly dawn.

I can't stay any longer.

Don't be afraid, Barnabas.

You'll be too weak to do anything but sleep this day,

as I will.

And when night comes again, I'll come back to you.

Until tonight, then.

- Julia.

- Good morning, Vicki.

What time is it?

- Oh, it's about o'clock.

How long have you been here?

- All night.

- All night?

Why?

- I looked everywhere I could think of.

I don't know what else to do.

- What are you talking about?

- Barnabas.

He got out of bed early last night.

He's disappeared.

- Disappeared?

- I've looked everywhere.

I haven't been able to find him.

I'm so afraid that something's happened to him.

- Well, what could have happened?

- Oh, I don't know.

It just frightens me just to think of it.

- Well, how long is it since you've been to the old house?

- Since about midnight.

- Well, that's about nine hours ago.

He could have come back since then.

- No.

I left Willie there to watch for Barnabas and Willie was

supposed to come here and tell me as soon as Barnabas came in.

I don't know what else to do.

- I think you should go upstairs and try and go to sleep.

- Yes, I suppose you're right.

- I'll take you up.

- No.

Vicki, if Willie comes to say that Barnabas has come back,

will you wake me?

- Of course, I will.

- Thank you, Vicki.

- I must get out of this place but where can I

go where she won't find me?

Who can help me?

Julia?

No.

No, Angelique would think of her and might harm her.

I can't come back to Julia or Willie.

Not even Stokes.

She'd suspect him, too.

There must be someone who can help me.

Someone.

Vicki.

Yes.

Angelique knows how I feel about Vicki

and she would think that I wouldn't

go to her in my condition.

Yes.

Yes, Vicki.

She'll find safety for me.

Yes, Vicki.

Vicki.

Vicki.

Vicki.

I've got to get to her.

- Vicki. - Good morning, Roger.

- You're still angry with me, aren't you?

- Yes.

- Vicki, I deliberately stayed in my room

all morning thinking about last night and I want to apologize.

I-- it's my opinion now that my reaction to the dream

was wrong.

- You know perfectly well that I'm not angry about the dream.

- Oh, Vicki, you know how Elisabeth and I feel about you.

You're a member of our family to us.

I...

- Those things that you said about Jeff.

You said he wasn't to be trusted and you wouldn't tell me why.

I don't think that's fair.

- Well, it isn't fair, and I want you to accept my apology.

You didn't react the way I hoped you did,

and I just spoke without thinking.

I'm sorry.

- So am I.

- Will you forgive me?

- I will.

Roger, were you up when Julia came in last night?

- Yes, I was.

- Did she tell you about Barnabas?

- She said that he was still missing.

Has there been any new development?

- No.

No, he still hasn't been found.

- Vicki...

Vicki, I need you.

I need you.

I can't make it alone.

Vicki, hear me.

Hear me.

- Did someone just come in?

- No.

- What are you staring at?

- Nothing.

- Where are you going?

Vicki, would you please tell me what is the matter with you?

- I have to go to the old house. - The old house?

What for?

- I think that Barnabas is there now.

- Barnabas?

How do you know?

- I don't know, it's just a feeling that I have.

But I think he's in danger and he needs help.

- How did you get that feeling?

A moment ago, we were standing in the drawing room talking.

- Excuse me, I'll be right back.

- Vicki...

please...

hear me.

Vicki...

Vicki...

[groaning]

- Barnabas.

- Vicki...

Vicki, you've come to find me.

- What happened to you?

- You've come to find me...

but it's too late.

- Barnabas?

It can't be!

It can't be!
