[Maggie Evans] - The moon over Collinwood is partially obscured

by mists from the sea.

It is almost as if the earth

is struggling to hide its secrets.

For this is to be a night of terror.

A trap has been set for one who would destroy.

One who, at this moment,

is making a frightening and dangerous decision.

♪♪

- Barnabas? - Yes?

- You're planning something, aren't you?

- Am I?

- You're planning to k*ll Maggie Evans.

I know you are.

You lied to Dr. Hoffman.

You're not going to leave Maggie alone, you're going to k*ll her.

- Do I have any other choice?

- You don't know how much she remembers.

Her memory may not come back,

not the part about you anyway.

- I can hardly afford to take that chance.

- But you...

You don't want to k*ll her.

You know you don't.

- I tried to spare her...

But now she's become a threat to my very existence.

I must do whatever is necessary to ensure my safety.

And yours.

- But why don't you wait, find out how much she knows?

- I cannot wait.

I've waited too long as it is.

- When are you planning to do it?

- When the moon passes behind those clouds,

and I can walk unobserved in the night.

- Tonight?

- Yes... tonight.

- Barnabas, you can't k*ll her.

- I told you, I have no choice.

- Well, you'll never get away with it.

- Don't be absurd.

- But they're all looking out for her.

Her father, Haskell, all of them.

- Do you think I'm not clever enough

to take care of those idiots?

- Well, even if you did get away with it,

think of what'll happen.

The whole town would be in an uproar.

- So?

- Well, police will start asking questions.

They might even come into this house again.

- Now how would they connect me with Maggie Evans?

- Well, they might.

Why, you've been taking too many chances already.

You can't go on taking chances.

Sooner or later they're gonna find out what you are!

- You underestimate me, Willie.

You forget that I'm no ordinary man.

I have the power to deal with fools

that come around here asking me questions.

- And you forget one thing.

Dr. Hoffman knows what you are.

If you k*ll Maggie Evans, she might turn against you.

She might tell the others what she knows.

- And ruin her precious experiments?

Her hopes for fame and glory?

I doubt that.

- She might, she said she would.

She told you to stay away from Maggie!

- I can handle Dr. Hoffman.

- Are you ready for your injection?

- Whenever you are, Doctor.

- I must say I'm very pleased tonight.

- How so?

- Because I finally think you're beginning to trust me.

- Why shouldn't I trust you, Doctor?

- Well, for a long time, you didn't.

But tonight, for the first time,

I think you finally have complete faith in me.

- Why tonight?

- Because you're not afraid of Maggie,

or this rumor that her memory is returning.

You know I have complete control of the situation and I do.

- Of course I know that, Doctor.

- That's good, that's a relief because for a moment,

I was afraid that you might try to harm Maggie.

Which would be totally unnecessary, totally.

- I understand that completely, Doctor.

♪♪

[door opening]

[Sam] - Maggie?

Did I startle you?

- No, not really.

- You shouldn't be afraid.

There's nothing to be afraid of.

- I know.

- There are men all over the place.

Now, if you hear anything,

you just give a yell and they'll come running.

- It's strange.

- What is?

- I look out my window and I don't see anything.

It's as calm and peaceful as it always is.

- Well... because they're well hidden, they're there.

You mustn't be afraid.

- I'm not.

- Good.

- Suppose he'll come tonight?

The man, whoever he is?

- I hope not.

I hope he never tries to get to you.

- I hope he does.

I hope the Sheriff's men trap him.

Then this nightmare will be over once and for all.

- Maggie...

If I didn't think this plan had a chance of success

I wouldn't have allowed it, you know that.

- I know that, Pop.

You don't have to keep reassuring me.

I'm not scared.

- Well, it's late.

Why don't you go to bed.

- I'm not really sleepy. I think I'll read for awhile.

- Are you sure you don't want me to stay here with you?

- No, I'm fine.

- All right, good night, Maggie.

- Good night.

- Maggie?

- Yes?

- You're well protected.

No one can get near this house.

- [chuckling] I know.

Now you get some rest, Pop, you look exhausted.

- Okay, good night.

- Good night.

[door closing]

[flute playing "London Bridge"]

[book thuds]

- You shouldn't go to sleep that way.

- What?

- I said you shouldn't go to sleep that way.

People aren't supposed to go to sleep in chairs.

- Sarah!

- You dropped your book.

- Oh, Sarah.

- Don't you want it back?

- Are you real or am I just dreaming?

- Don't you even know when you're awake?

- [chuckling] Oh, I'm awake...

And you're here, and you're real.

- Of course I'm real.

You say funny things sometimes.

- Why are you here?

- I don't know.

- You don't know?

- I guess I'm here because I thought

that you wanted me to come.

- How did you get in?

- I found a way.

- And nobody saw you?

- No, I don't think so.

- Sarah, it's not possible for anybody to get into the house.

All the doors and the windows are locked.

- I know how to get into places that I want to get in.

- Sarah, I have to leave the room for a minute.

Now you wait for me right here.

- Why do you want to leave the room?

- Because I want to get us both a nice glass of milk.

- I don't like milk.

- Well, then I'll get you something that you will like.

Now you wait right here.

- No, I won't wait.

- Why not?

- I know why you want to leave the room.

You want to tell your father that I'm here.

- Now why would I want to do that?

- You want him to know that I'm here.

- You're not afraid of my father, are you?

He likes little girls.

- I don't care.

- But why would you have to go?

- I have to leave.

I came to see you anyway.

If anyone else comes in this room, I'll have to leave.

- Please don't do that, I wouldn't like that.

I'm glad you're here.

- You are?

- Of course!

Now, we're friends, aren't we?

- Yes.

But I came to see you, not anyone else.

If anyone else comes in this room I'll have to leave.

- Please don't do that.

- Then don't open your door.

Don't let anyone know I'm here.

- All right.

- Why did you want me to come?

- What do you mean?

- I had a feeling that you wanted me to come here tonight.

- You did?

- Yes.

But I can't remember what it was.

- Well, maybe you thought I was lonely.

- No, I had another reason.

But I can't remember.

- Well, try to remember.

- I know, my doll!

- Your doll?

- Yes, the doll I gave you.

Where is it? I don't see it.

- Well, I don't have it right now.

- Why not?

- Well, I loaned it to a... to someone.

- Who?

- A friend, a man named Dr. Woodard.

- You've got to get it back.

- Well, why?

- You... it's important that you have it.

- Why is it important?

- It just is.

- Sarah, now, what's so special about your doll?

- I gave it to you because you had to have it.

- So why is it so important for me to have it?

- It just is, that's all.

- All right, Sarah.

- I have to go now.

- Well, not now.

- I have to.

- Well, not yet, just, just wait a minute.

- Don't call your father.

- Sarah, you'll like him, he's a nice man, you'll see.

Pop?

Pop!

Oh, Sarah?!

Sarah?!

Sarah!

- Maggie, what is it?

- She was here, Pop! - She?

- The little girl, Sarah.

- [whispers] Sarah?

- Right... - Was here?

- Just a moment ago and then I turned around

to call you and she was gone.

- But how could she get in here?

- I don't know.

- Maggie...

- All I know is that

I was dozing off and when I woke up she was here,

right here in this room. - Woke up?

- Yes, and she was standing right in front of me.

I don't know how she got in the room,

she wouldn't tell me.

- Are you sure it wasn't a dream?

- No, Pop, now, she was here and she was real.

I was talking to her.

I was wide awake.

- What did she say?

- Well, it didn't make much sense but...

it seemed like she was trying to warn me.

- Warn you?

- Well, that's what it seemed like to me.

- Well, what were her exact words?

- She wanted to know where her doll was.

- Her doll?

- Yes, and then I told her that I had given it to Dr. Woodard,

and she got all upset.

She said I had to get it back right away, tonight.

It seemed like a warning of some kind.

- Are you sure?

- Yes.

Pop...

What do you suppose it means?

- I... I don't know.

- Where do you suppose she comes from?

Where do you suppose... Who is she?

- I don't know that either.

I wish I did.

[Willie whispering] - Dr. Hoffman!

[Julia] - Who is it?

- It's me.

- Willie.

Did you just throw pebbles at my window?

- I've got to talk to you.

I, I didn't want to come in the house and wake the others.

- What's wrong?

- It's Barnabas, you've gotta stop him.

- Stop him? From what?

- From k*lling Maggie Evans.

- k*lling Maggie!

- He plans to do it tonight.

- What?

- Yes, he's planning to do it, he told me so.

He said Maggie Evans is gonna die tonight.

- He said that?

- Those were his exact words.

- But he... wouldn't k*ll Maggie!

Oh, he couldn't.

- Now you don't know Barnabas.

You don't know what he's capable of.

He'd k*ll anybody who got in his way.

- But he's intelligent enough to know

that k*lling Maggie would jeopardizeall our plans,

even his very existence.

- He thinks he can get away with it.

He thinks he can get away with anything.

- But I told him I'd expose him if anything happened to Maggie.

- He doesn't believe it.

He thinks he can handle you.

- But he trusts me.

He knows I have the situation under control.

- He only said that because

he didn't want you to cause any trouble.

He didn't want you to know the truth until Maggie was dead.

But he's planning to k*ll her,

and he's not afraid of what you might do.

- Are you sure of this?

- Well, I heard him say it with my own ears!

He's planning to k*ll Maggie tonight!

You're the only one who's got a chance to stop him!

But you gotta do something right away before it's too late!

- I can hardly believe this is happening.

- It's happening all right.

- I was so certain that I was--

in full control of the situation.

- Well, you don't, Barnabas is harder to control

than you think.

- And he actually said that he was gonna k*ll Maggie tonight?

- Yes! How many times do I have to say it before you believe me?

- I believe you.

- Well, what are you gonna do?

- I'm gonna go to the old house, and I'm gonna talk to Barnabas.

- Do you think you can talk him out of it?

- I must.

- What are you going to say to him?

- I'm gonna reason with him.

I'll point out the risk involved in what he wants to do.

He's intelligent, I think he'll listen to me.

- I'm not so sure but you're the only one who's got a chance.

- You wait here until I come back.

- Don't you want me to go with you?

- No, I think I can handle it best alone.

- I just hope you're not too late.

- Well?

- Nothing.

- You didn't see anything?

- No.

- All those men out there

and they didn't see Sarah either coming or leaving?

- Apparently not.

- They didn't see anything, Pop, not even a shadow?

- All they said was they couldn't even see a stray cat.

- That doesn't make any sense.

- I know.

- Pop, I still feel that Sarah, whoever she was,

was trying to warn me about something.

Did you call Joe?

- Yes, he's, uh, gonna get the doll from Dr. Woodard,

and he's gonna bring it right over.

- Good.

I'll feel better if I have it.

That doll seems to mean something, I...

I don't know what.

Pop? - Huh, yes?

- If Sarah could get into this house, then...

- Someone else could too?

- Yes.

- Now don't talk like that, darling.

We have the house completely guarded and you know that.

- Pop, you're pretending that you're not as scared as I am.

And you're just as scared as I am.

- Maybe I am but...

[dogs howling]

- Those dogs again!

- I hear them.

- Why do they keep howling like that, Pop, why?

[Barnabas] - At last, the darkness has come.

Goodbye, Maggie Evans.

I might have loved you.

I might have spared you.

But now... you must die.

[dogs howling]
