02x09 - Percy and Harold

Percy worked hard at the new harbour.

Toby helped but sometimes the stone
was too heavy and Percy fetched them.

Sometimes he'd see Thomas. "Percy,
the Fat Controller is pleased with us.

(Aeroplane passing overhead)

An airfield was close by.
Percy heard them all day.

Noisiest of all was a helicopter.

(Throbbing)

“Stupid thing!" said Percy.
“Why can't it buzz off?"

Percy stopped at the airfield.

“Hello, who are you?" he said.
“Harold. Who are you?"

“Percy. What great arms you've got.”

“Yes. Don't you wish
you could hover like me?"

“No, I like my rails.”

“Railways are slow.
They're quite out of date."

He whirled his arms and buzzed away.

Percy found Toby at the quarry.
“That Harold, that stuck-up whirlybird,

“says I'm slow and out of date.

“I'll show him.”

He collected his trucks, still fuming.

Soon, they heard a familiar buzzing.

“There's Harold - let's race him,”
whispered Percy's driver.

“Yes, let's!" said Percy.

Percy pounded along.
The trucks swayed.

“Well, I'll be a ding dong dang!"
said the driver. There was Harold!

“Percy, you're gaining!" Percy had never
been allowed to run fast before.

“Hurry!” he panted to the trucks.
"We don't want to!"

But Percy was rocketing along.
Harold was high and alongside.

The fireman shovelled for dear life.
“Percy, we're gaining!" said the driver.

“Good boy! Good boy!"

A signal warned them
that the harbour was near

“Peep-peep! Brakes, guard, please!"
The driver carefully checked the speed.

They rolled under the main line
and halted on the wharf.

“I'm sure we've lost," groaned Percy.

The fireman scrambled to the roof.
"We've won!

“Harold's still looking
for a place to land.

“Listen, boys, here's a song for Percy."

¢ Said Harold helicopter to our Percy,
"You are slow

“The railway is out of date
and not much use, you know"

? But Percy with his stone trucks
did the trip in record time

¢ And we beat the helicopter
on our old branch line J

Percy loved it. “Oh, thank you!” he said.
He was a very happy engine.
