NARRATOR As Ash moves ever closer toward

entry into the Hoenn League, our heroes have boarded a ship

hoping to get to Mossdeep Island and the next Gym.

Unfortunately, that ship was headed on a different course.

So welcome to Bamba Island, you guys.

It looks like our plans have changed

just a little bit, right?

That's for sure, and there's no direct route

to Mossdeep Island from here

so we'll have to go to another island first

before goin' there.

Yeah, and I'll bet we see a lot of rare Water type Pokémon too.

Wow, I've never seen a Venusaur as tiny as that one.

It's an Ivysaur, May.

Which is a pretty normal size for a Charmeleon.

That can't be a Squirtle 'cause it's a Blastoise.

They're evolved forms of the starter Pokémon

from Pallet Town.

And with the renewed strength of ten Bosses

beyond their wildest dreams.

So this means our plan

needs to be three times more evil.

Studying to become a judge is a lot of hard work.

You have to know all the Pokémon types

as well as attacks and traits by heart

before you can make a good call.

That reminds me of somethin' I heard a while ago.

I heard that it's a great honor to judge

a Pokémon League competition

just because it's such a hard job to do.

Yeah, they only pick the best of the best to become judges.

There's only a small group of people

in the world that end up making it.

And that explains why all the students here

at the institute like Jimmy are working so hard all the time.

That makes sense.

Oh, yeah, it wasn't that long ago

I used to be a Pokémon Trainer.

- Huh? - You were a Pokémon Trainer?

Yeah, I used to travel from town to town

just the same as you guys do.

And you know, those times were probably

the best times of my life.

JIMMY 'It was just me and my Squirtle'

when I first left my hometown.

Eventually, Squirtle evolved into a Wartortle

and then we ran into Ivysaur and Charmeleon.

What? You ran into them?

You don't just run into an Ivysaur and a Charmeleon.

You're right, but that's how it happened.

I can remember it happening

right after my Squirtle had evolved.

We were totally lost.

Stuck somewhere deep in the forest.

The two of us were trying to get the other

to eat the last bit of our food.

Then suddenly..

Our sandwich totally got away from us.

[CONTENT]

That Ivysaur was so grateful for that sandwich

that it guided us out of the forest

and we've been together ever since.

That's gotta be the coolest way ever to catch a Pokémon.

Yeah, talk about a lucky break.

PIKACHU [ENTHRALLED]

So, now tell us how you met up with your Charmeleon?

Uh, let's see.

Oh, yeah, I slipped and fell into a river.

And when Ivysaur and Wartortle pulled me to safety

this weird colored Magikarp had gotten

stuck in my clothes and fell out.

At that moment, an old man was passing by.

And he was like a Magikarp fanatic or something.

He begged me to trade it with him for his Pokémon.

So I did.

You traded Magikarp for Charmeleon?

That's even luckier than the other break.

[AGREEMENT]

But my luck ran out, 'cause I was never

able to earn even one badge.

Look at this.

ASH 'But that's a badge.'

A Cerulean Gym Cascade Badge.

- It is? - That's Misty's Gym.

You must be a great Trainer if you got one of those.

I got this badge by accident too.

We were just passing by the Cerulean Gym

and this girl named Daisy asked us

So, we said, yeah and the four of us started working.

Guess, we must've done a pretty good job.

'Cause she was so grateful, she gave me this badge.

So, you didn't even have to battle the Gym Leader for it?

Nope, they told me that Misty wasn't around

to battle at the time.

You must be the luckiest guy I've ever met.

Well, they say luck is an important skill too.

I guess so, but I still haven't won a single Pokémon battle yet.

- Not even one? - Nope.

I keep losing one battle after another.

When I first got to Lilycove City

while still in my boat and wondering

what to do next, I fell asleep.

And then my boat came loose from the dock

and we drifted away.

And that's the way you guys ended up here?

So, you just entered the Judge Trainer's Institute?

- Believe it or not, yeah. - That's amazing.

I'll bet you could make it through your whole life

just depending on luck.

Well, I've been working really hard

and trying my best to succeed at the institute.

'But everything I work at ends up being a failure.'

a first-class Trainer, or a first-class judge.
