male narrator: It's been
a beautiful day in the country
as our determined heroes
march onward to the gym
in Mahogany Town.
The long road ahead winds
aimlessly through the valley
until finally...
- I can see the town.
- Pika!
- My trusted map
says that's Eggseter.
- Just so long as they have a
restaurant there I'll be happy.
I'm starving.
- Me too.
Let's eat first thing.
- [roar]
- Huh?
- Gary?
- Huh?
Whoa! Hi, Ash.
- Hey, Gary.
Cool skateboard.
- Thanks.
- Your Arcanine looks great,
Gary.
- Yeah. It looks so strong
and really well groomed too.
You must have been training
together a long time.
- We have, Brock.
- Hey, Gary.
Let's see how Arcanine does...
in battle.
- Pika!
- Sorry, Ash, I can't.
- Huh?
- It's way too big
of a risk, Ash.
I can't let Arcanine get injured
before the big race.
- A big race?
- Yup, gotta go.
Go, Arcanine.
- But, Gary,
tell me about the race.
Wait up!
- Go!
- Faster, Granbull.
- Granbull.
- Little higher, Scyther.
- Scyther.
- Well, talk about
your radical sports.
- It seems a little
dangerous.
- Yeah, but more dangerous
for the Pokémon
than for the trainers.
- Pika.
- [singing]
Pokémon!
- No time to question
my moves
I stick to the path
that I choose
Me and my friends
are gonna do it right
You'll never see us
run away from a fight
To be a master
is my dream
All I've got to do
is believe
- I believe
- I've got a chance
to win
I'm on my way
to victory
- Pokémon!
- I can be a champion
If I just believe
I'm on a master quest
- Master quest
- I want the whole world
to see
- I believe
- I'm gonna be
the very best
'Cause all I've got to do
is believe in me
- Pokémon!
- That was delicious.
- Yeah, almost as good as mine.
- Can't eat.
- Ash, you're not still worried
about those Pokémon, are you?
- Didn't you see?
I can't believe Gary
had that collar on Arcanine.
- Oh, yeah.
- But Arcanine didn't seem
to mind it at all.
- That's right.
- Huh?
- We call it
Extreme Pokémon.
- Extreme Pokémon?
- It's become the single most
popular sport in Eggseter.
In ancient times,
riding Pokémon was a necessity.
Now, it's reserved
for the annual competition.
- What competition are you
talking about, sir?
- Each trainer
rides a skateboard
pulled by a special Pokémon
in a race to the finish line.
And tomorrow's the best part
of the competition:
the championship event.
People come to watch the race
from miles and miles.
- Gary.
- Hey, I wonder
if he and his Arcanine
will win tomorrow's
competition.
- Oh, no, he won't.
Not if I can help it.
Yes. Extreme Pokémon,
here we come.
- Wait a minute, Ash.
Don't you need practice?
- Misty's right, Ash.
The other trainers have been
practicing for months,
and you don't even have
any of the right equipment.
- Oh, yeah.
- Pika.
- Tell me,
do you really want
to be in the competition
that badly, young man?
- You bet I do.
- In that case, I can help.
Allow me to introduce myself
to you kids.
My name is Shelby,
and I run a Pokémon day care
here in these parts.
- My name's Ash.
- I'm Misty.
- And I'm Brock.
- It's nice to meet you all.
- Mr. Shelby,
what do you mean by day care?
- Pika?
- A day care is run
by nesters,
who cares for Pokémon eggs and
protects the babies that hatch
until they've grown strong
enough to care for themselves.
- Wow, that sounds like
it'd be a really tough job.
Hey, take a look at those baby
Woopers down by the pond.
- Just hatched them last week.
- Aw, they're so adorable.
- Togepi.
- What a beautiful area,
with fresh air
and fertile soil.
A perfect place
to raise Pokémon.
- It's probably because of that
that there have been nesters
in these parts for years.
That house there
is a Pokémon day care.
And look, that one too.
Years ago when Pokémon fell sick
and needed treatment,
before there were cars
and trains and such,
it was a long,
difficult journey into town.
- Hey, I bet that's how
Extreme Pokémon got its start.
- That's exactly right.
Hi, honey. I'm back.
- Welcome home.
Ah, who's this?
- Hello, ma'am.
- Hello, ma'am.
- This young man here is Ash,
and he's the latest entry
in tomorrow's final competition.
- [laughs]
- Really? Then best of luck.
- Wow.
Look at all those eggs.
- These are all yours
to take care of?
- That's right.
This one arrived
only yesterday.
- Beautiful.
- They all are.
- Thank you.
We take great pride
in our Pokémon eggs.
- Once they hatch we raise
some pretty strong Pokémon.
Here, take a look
at this little one.
- Sentret.
- Oh! It's a Sentret.
How old?
- It's only two days old.
- Look at all of them.
- They're so cute.
- Togepi.
- These are all yours too?
- Yes. This is our group
of the little babies.
- Ash, what do you say?
Why don't you
come on outside.
- Oh!
- It hasn't been used
for many years,
but I reckon this old
skateboard's
probably itching for a ride.
- Oh, awesome!
Thanks, Mr. Shelby.
- Pikachu.
- Yeah!
- Say, not too bad
for your first time out, Ash.
- It's not exactly
my first time.
I used to do a lot
of mountain boarding
up in the hills
of Pallet Town.
- Yes, I can tell.
- Okay. More practice.
Turn. Speed.
Good control.
Huh?
Whoa! Turn! Turn! Turn!
Ah!
- Oh, no.
- Go, Arcanine.
Now block.
- [crash]
- [groans]
- Ash.
- Huh?
- Gary?
- Have you finally lost it?
Huh?
So, you just can't turn away
from a challenge, can you?
- Uh, nope.
Thanks, Arcanine.
- And thank you, Gary.
But don't think
I'm gonna go easy on you
when it's time to compete.
- Of course not.
You got to give it
all you got.
But there's still no chance
of beating me.
Me and Arcanine, that is.
Go, Arcanine!
- Arcanine, huh?
Certainly a formidable opponent.
- Have you decided
which one of your Pokémon
you're gonna use?
- According to the rules,
you're not allowed
to switch Pokémon
in the middle of the race.
- That means I can only bring
one with me.
That's gonna be hard.
- To win a competition,
you must become one
with your partner.
So you must choose
carefully.
Character. Trust.
Physical strength.
There is much to consider.
- Physical strength.
- Pikachu!
- Sorry, Pikachu.
- Pika?
- Cyndaquil's too laid back,
and Totodile can be
hard to control sometimes.
- I know.
Bayleef, I choose you.
- Bayleef.
- Bayleef, huh?
- Nice call.
- Plenty of strength
in Bayleef.
Sure seems like
you made a good choice.
- Thanks.
Bayleef, are you ready?
- Bay, Bay.
- All right, Bayleef.
Now we'll work
on switching directions.
Right.
Now left.
[screams]
- Well, they say
when you fall off your bike
you're supposed
to get right back on.
Well, Bayleef,
let's try it again.
Go, Bayleef.
- Strange.
Wonder what the twerp
could be up to this time.
- [snoring]
- Huh? What's this?
Hey, sleeping beauties!
- Hmm?
- Do you have to shout?
- Try and keep your eyes open
so you can take a look.
- Right. Now left.
- Look.
- It's a little twerp
on wheels.
- Oh, I forgot.
I received this little pamphlet
on our way into town.
- Huh. "The Extreme Pokémon
Competition,
"where Pokémon and trainer
will become one
competing with speed
and power."
Final events are tomorrow.
I bet the twerp's competing.
- Which means...
- Come tomorrow...
- This place is gonna
be swarming
with the fastest and
the strongest Pokémon there are.
- And who will be there
to catch them?
- Team Rocket will,
that's who.
- Not quite.
- Huh?
- We'll be smarter this time.
Instead of being too greedy
we'll simply capture
just one Extreme Pokémon.
- Wobbuffet.
- What an extremely
good idea.
- Exactly.
We'll grab
the first place winner,
and then we'll cash it in
for lots of money.
- Nice plan, Jess.
We'll end up with more
by going for less.
- Wobbuffet.
- Well, then,
what do you think?
- Hooray!
- Hooray!
- Wow. Mmmm, tasty.
Soft center.
This Pokémon food
is really great.
- Why thank you.
Pikachu and Togepi
seem to be enjoying it too.
- Thanks so much.
You've taken such
good care of us.
Isn't that right, Pikachu?
- Pika!
- Left. Right.
Good job, Bayleef.
You're doing great.
- Bay, Bay.
- That's it.
We're really getting
the hang of it now.
- Ash!
Hey, Ash!
I have something
to show you.
- Mr. Shelby?
- I've brought you this egg
to practice with.
- What for?
- It's called a dummy egg.
Halfway through the race,
you'll have to pick one up
and carry it to the finish line.
- Oh, thanks.
- Ash, you really ought
to be proud of yourself
and all your hard work.
You and Bayleef
are now working as a team.
With that kind of determination,
you may just see first place.
- Yeah. I'll sure do my best.
Bayleef, time to practice.
- Bay, Bay, Bay.
- Who's that Pokémon?
It's Mr. Mime.
- And now, the town of Eggseter
is proud to announce
the moment you've all
been waiting for:
the finals to the
Extreme Pokémon competition
are about to begin.
Today's winner will receive the
coveted golden Pokéball trophy.
Now allow me to explain
the rules of the competition.
The winding course takes
our courageous contestants
out of town,
through the Eggseter valley,
and ending at
the Shelby ranch.
There they will each receive
a dummy egg.
They must bring the egg
back here to the starting line,
which then becomes
the finish line.
There is no set course
from the ranch to the finish,
so the contestants are free
to choose their own route.
- I'll wait for you
at the finish line, Ash.
- That's not gonna happen, Gary.
- The players have stepped up
to the starting line.
This is where all
of the hard work and dedication
finally pays off.
And they're off!
- Whoa, this race is off
to a rough start.
Just out of the gate
we've got a major spill.
- Cross through it,
Arcanine.
- Go, Bayleef.
- Bay.
- It looks like a group
of competitors
has just emerged
from the wreck.
- I'm glad Ash and Bayleef
were able to make it out.
- Yeah.
- Pika!
- Our competitors
have rounded the bend
into the treacherously
steep mountainous section
of the course.
- Okay, Arcanine,
time to speed up.
- Bayleef, faster.
Pass him.
- Bay!
- Gary Oak holds a healthy lead.
But wait. A late entry,
Ash Ketchum,
is narrowing the gap.
- Go, Ash!
- Pikachu!
- Well, it looks like Ash
is really giving Gary
a run for his money.
- How you doing, Gary?
- Ash, I was afraid I might have
lost you in my dust.
Well, nice to chat,
but I got a race to win.
Arcanine, fly.
- Don't let Gary
get away, Bayleef.
- Bay.
- [laughs]
- Look at them go.
- Look at that.
The twerp and his Bayleef
are putting up quite a fight.
- Who cares about them?
- Yeah, this time we're going
after the big prize.
- Oh, that's right.
- And now...
- The prize we choose is...
- Arcanine.
- No!
- Gary. Arcanine.
Gary, are you okay?
- What just happened?
- [laughing]
- Huh?
- Prepare for trouble up,
up and away.
- Make it double,
it's not a cliché.
- To protect the world
from devastation.
- To unite all peoples
within our nation.
- To denounce the evils
of truth and love.
- To extend our reach
to the stars above.
- Jessie.
- James.
- Team Rocket blast off
at the speed of light.
- Surrender now or prepare
to fight, fight, fight.
- That's right.
- Wobbuffet.
- Team Rocket.
- Bay, Bay.
- Now that we have the most
extreme of the extreme,
we'll just be on our way.
- No!
- See. being extremists
ourselves,
we normally would have tried
stealing them all.
- So it looks like
you caught us on a good day.
- That's extremely right.
- [laughing]
- Come back here!
- Don't worry, Gary,
we'll catch them.
Ready, Bayleef?
- Bay.
- [cackling]
- That was a brilliant plan.
- Less is more
and more is less.
- The boss is gonna be
real proud this time.
- Wobbuffet.
- Team Rocket.
- Huh?
- Oh, the twerp.
- Here we go, Bayleef.
- Bayleef.
- He's flying.
- Ash, look out.
- Arcanine. Go, now.
- Team Rocket's blasting...
- The air is thick
with anticipation
here at the Shelby Ranch,
as we wait for our frontrunners
to round the last curve.
- Oh!
- Huh? What's this?
What is this
falling from the sky?
A hot-air balloon.
But where did it come from?
- Could it be...?
- Team Rocket.
- Pika.
- What on earth?
- [groans]
- Huh?
Oh! Ash!
Are you all right?
- I'm okay.
But what about Arcanine?
- All right.
- How did this happen, Ash?
- Team Rocket.
They tried to capture
Gary's Arcanine
in the middle
of the race.
- Hey. We didn't just try.
We did capture it.
- Yeah, for a minute.
- Wobbu!
- Hey, Wob, what's that?
- A tisket, a tasket
A Pokémon egg basket
Oh!
- Hey!
Those are precious eggs
that the Shelby Family
are supposed to be
taking care of.
- Really?
- Well, we'll be taking care
of them now.
- And when they hatch,
guess what?
- All the baby Pokémon
will be ours.
- Give them back.
- Sorry, twerp.
Go, Arbok.
- Bay!
- Bayleef.
Razor Leaf attack
on Arbok.
- Bayleef.
- Arbok, use Poison Sting.
- Bay!
Bay.
- [all gasp]
- Now, Arbok.
Bite attack.
- Oh, no!
- Arcanine, Take Down.
- Gary.
- Ah! Now what?
- Quick. Let's scramble.
- Please don't hurt the eggs.
- Bayleef, go and bring
the eggs back here.
- Bayleef.
- My basket!
- Arcanine,
use Flame Wheel.
- [screams]
We put all our eggs
in one basket again!
- Wobbu!
- Wow.
- Ash, thanks a lot
for helping out my Arcanine.
- That's all right.
But now back to the race.
You're still gonna lose.
- Oh, yeah? Let's go.
Huh?
Uh-oh, we'd better hurry.
- Yeah, they're starting
to catch up with us.
- Here are your dummy eggs.
Now go back on out there
and skate a good race.
- Thanks.
- Thanks.
- And we're back
with what has been
an unusual day
at the Extreme Pokémon event.
But the race is on.
Gary is still in the lead, with
Ash only a Poké-length behind.
- Well, Ash is still
hanging in there.
- He could still win this race.
- Pika.
- Arcanine, now.
Speed up.
- Faster, Bayleef.
Stay right next to them.
- [panting]
- It's the narrowest part
of the trail.
Oh, no.
We'll never pass Gary here.
There's got to be a way.
That's it.
- Looks like we lost Ash.
But he didn't give up.
- Go, Bayleef.
- What?
- Bay!
- Not bad.
- Last one there is...
- A rotten egg.
- Never before in the history
of Extreme Pokémon
have we seen such daring,
such cunning
as that last move
by Ash Ketchum.
- And here they come,
down the homestretch.
Folks, this race
is right down to the wire.
- Arcanine,
the final sprint.
- Come on, Bayleef.
Let's give it all you've got.
- Bay!
- Bayleef and Arcanine
are neck and neck,
racing towards the finish line
in a dead heat.
What competitors
these young trainers are.
But who will come out
the champion?
- Now dive for the goal!
That's it!
- Go, Bayleef!
Big jump!
- Bayleef!
- We have a winner.
- [cheers]
- In a splendid
come-from-behind
photo finish,
it's Ash Ketchum!
- Bay.
- What a race it has been.
And what an achievement.
Having beaten out Gary Oak,
a powerful contender indeed,
Ash has won the golden
Pokéball trophy
in his first Extreme Pokémon
competition.
- [laughs]
- No regrets.
You sure have raised yourself
a great Pokémon.
- Thanks, Gary.
- See you at Johto.
- Great. I hope so.
- Pika, Pika!
- So long.
- Ash?
- Mr. Shelby.
- We can't thank you enough
for watching out for our eggs.
- This here is a very special
Pokémon egg
and, well, it's...
it's for you.
- Wow.
- Your own Pokémon egg.
- What kind of egg is it?
- It's a secret.
- When it hatches you should use
the Pokéball
on top of the case
to catch it with.
- Cool. I will. Thanks.
- You all take care now.
- See you soon.
- male narrator:
It's been an exciting stop

Hard practice,
a winning race,
