Well, I'm finally here.
It's time to take on
the pokémon league...
And become a pokémon Master.
Pokéball, go!
Huh? Aah!
Aah!
Hey, cut it out!
Aah!
Whoa! Huh?
Mime. Mime. Mime.
Whoa!
Ash: Hey, cut it out!
What are you doing?
Narrator: After winning badges,
ash has come back home to pallet
to follow his dream of
competing in the pokémon league.
But he's just gotten
a very rude awakening!
Morning.
Oh, good morning, honey.
Did you sleep well?
Oh, I slept OK.
Until your Mr. Mime
came in and woke me up.
Oh, what happened?
That crazy clown used
the vacuum on my face.
Mr. Mime.
When Mr. Mime sees something
dirty, he has to clean it.
Right, mimey?
Mr. Mime.
Maybe now you can go another
week without taking a bath.
Ugh! Mr. Mime, suck that
smirk off misty's face!
Mr. Mime.
I'm sorry, ash, but Mr. Mime
only listens to me!
Huh?
Oh, mimey, would you go and pick some
more vegetables from the garden, please?
Mime!
Hey, that used to be my job.
We'd better eat fast.
We've got a lot to learn about the
pokémon league from Professor oak.
Right. Professor oak!
Jessy: Well, there's no use
pretending anymore.
James: We haven't successfully
stolen a single pokémon for the boss.
We're just victims
of c.F.S...
Chronic failure syndome.
James: There's his
fabulous headquarters.
Jessy: Wait a minute.
What's the worst
he can do to us?
He can yell and scream
and fire us all.
Not if we quit first.
All:
We quit! Let's go!
Oh, look!
Hey, what's that?
All: Huh?
What was that thing?
I don't know.
The boss must be...
[Groans]
That thing!
Sir!
Are you OK?
Now more bad news.
What are you doing here?
Huh? Huh? Huh?
[Stammers]
[Growls]
Uh...[gulps]
We were just in
the neighborhood...
[Helicopter overhead]
Jessy: But, sir, is there
anything we can do for you?
Just do your job for a change.
I'm sorry I asked.
[Meow]
[Blades whirring]
You just heard what
the boss said, didn't you?
He just wants us to do our job.
The head honcho just gave
us a Major vote of confidence.
[Crying]
There's no sense in
crying over lost pokémon.
We must renew our
commitment to stealing!
Come on, everybody,
let's go on with the show!
[Cheers]
[Doorbell rings]
Professor oak: Come in.
Professor oak, it's me ash.
Oh, what a surprise!
It's great to see... a togepi!
Aah!
Pikachu.
Glad you like it.
It just so happens you're not the
only pokémon trainer to stop by today.
Huh?
Humph! Well, now...
I'm not surprised
you showed up late.
I'm surprised
you showed up at all.
Hey!
All right, calm down, you two.
Why can't pallet's top
pokémon trainers get along?
Gary and ash:
Top trainer?! Not him!
That's right. You're
both such fine trainers
that you'll be pokémon
masters before long.
You might even be able
to learn from each other.
Hmph!
Hmph!
Krabby: Ko-kee. Ko-kee.
Ko-kee.
Here's your krabby, ash.
How ya doin', krabby?
Long time no see.
That's his, huh? Ha!
Ash, pokémon trainers left pallet
town on their pokémon journeys,
but you and Gary have earned
the most badges, and I'm very proud.
Oh, what happened
to the other ?
They both got off
to an excellent start,
but they just didn't
have the skill.
Oh, that's too bad.
They just wimped out.
But Gary has badges.
And you earned badges, ash.
That's really quite remarkable.
Well, gee, thank you.
Hey, the pokémon deserve
lots of credit, too.
Pika.
Misty's right. Maybe they
deserve more credit than me.
In any case,
I'm glad you're here.
It's time for you and Gary to
participate in the pokémon league.
All right! I'm on my way to
becoming a pokémon Master!
Let's go, Pikachu.
Pika!
Gary: Oh, ash.
Huh? Yeah,
what is it?
Just one question. Where's the
pokémon league meeting this year?
Uhh...
Ash...
That's one of the things
we came to find out.
I assume you know the pokémon
league only meets once a year
in the exact same Place...
Where is it? When is
it? You gotta tell me!
Atop the indigo plateau...
Exactly months from today.
Professor oak: And there'll be
more than trainers competing.
!
We're gonna beat 'em,
right, Pikachu?!
Pika!
You and Gary should take this time
to work hard, train your pokémon
and get ready for
the tournament.
He can try, but even if
ash had a year to train,
I'd beat him with both hands
tied behind my back.
You wish!
I'm not saying you're
a bad trainer, ash,
it's just you don't have
what it takes to beat me.
We'll just see about that.
[Doorbell rings]
Mom: Coming.
Good morning.
We're from pnn,
the pokémon news network.
Is that little son of yours
at home,
because we'd love to feature an interview
with him about his return to pallet.
For our show pokémon masters
of tomorrow.
Oh, you want to put
my ash on TV?
That's right.
Whee!
We have to see your son!
Is he home?
He's with his friends at
Professor oak's laboratory!
Thank you very much.
Good-bye, Ma'am.
So, ash...
I guess you're happy with
how your krabby's doing here?
My krabby's fine.
Ha ha! Check out mine.
Aah!
It's huge!
Hmm. Gigantic.
I keep rotating my pokémon
so they all get to battle
and get bigger and stronger.
Good trainers have to be smart
enough to help all their pokémon grow
and be the best they can be.
Uh...
He's right about that, ash.
When you said you hadn't
seen your krabby in a long time,
I figured you weren't
using it to battle.
I bet you use the same pokémon
over and over, don't you?
You win that bet!
Huh?! Grr!
Maybe I shouldn't have
said anything,
but I thought you might like to
know how real trainers work.
You gotta stop this, Professor,
or there's gonna be a fight.
I'm sorry, Brock, but I'm
a Professor, not a referee.
Hmm.
And here's another little tip.
Different pokémon types do better
against different gym leaders' attacks.
If you study the leader's
attacks before every match,
you can choose the best
pokémon to beat 'em.
Excellent strategy.
That's my grandson.
That's why it's so important
to know what kind of pokémon
can beat your opponents'
attacks.
What kind of pokémon would
you use against my Geodude?
I'd use a water pokémon
against a rock type,
but I'd have a grass pokémon
ready for back-up.
What would you use, ash?
He'd use Pikachu.
Ha! Everybody knows you shouldn't use
an electric pokémon against a rock type.
What a loser!
I'm no loser!
I earned badges!
Maybe so, but how many
pokémon did you capture, ash?
Or are you too embarrassed
to tell me?
Of course I'm not
embarrassed to tell you.
Don't tell him, ash.
It's none of his business
how many pokémon you have.
Professor oak:
Very interesting.
Misty and Brock:
Huh?
I just scanned both
your pokédexes
and the results show that Gary
has seen different pokémon
and ash has seen over .
All right!
I beat 'em!
But Gary captured many
more pokémon than ash.
Ohh!
Ahh.
You use you Pokédex every
time you see a pokémon,
but I know so much about
'em I capture 'em first
and ask questions later.
Is that the best way?
Of course it's the best way...
If you know what you're doing.
Grandpa, let's go to your lab
and show 'em all
the pokémon I caught.
Yes, good idea.
Let's poké around
in my laboratory.
Group: Who's that pokémon?
Group: It's...
Slowbro.
Pika.
Well, here they are.
These are the Pokéballs that hold
the pallet town trainers' pokémon.
Wow, Professor! There must
be thousands of pokémon in here.
And these, these are
the ones I received from ash.
Misty: That's a lot
of Pokéballs!
Yes, but they're almost all
tauros from the safari zone.
Ugh!
Pikachu.
On the other hand, Gary's
captured more than pokémon.
Not too bad.
Ahh! !
But there's only around
a kinds of pokémon,
you must have captured
more than of some kinds.
You can never have too
many pokémon. That's my motto.
The more pokémon you have, the
better position you're in to win battles.
Ha! You may have
a lot of pokémon,
but I bet they're
not your friends.
Friends?!
Having lots of pokémon
isn't important,
it's what you teach
and what you learn.
I'd say that, too, if I
had as few pokémon as you.
Oh, yeah? The ones I have
are times better than yours!
You're not as good
a trainer as I am.
Why don't you just admit it?
I'm a better trainer
than you'll ever be!
Hmm... you both have very different,
but very valid, views on training pokémon.
Gary and ash: Huh?
On your journeys, you each
captured differnt pokémon,
and with your different
personalties,
you learned to understand and
care for them in different ways.
Yeah.
Guess you're right.
Pokémon are special,
and they need our special care.
Pika.
[Chuckles]
Just like every other living creature, they
deserve our consideration and our respect.
If we care for them the way
we care for those we love,
we'll be able to live in peace,
as we learn about them
and ourselves.
My research has taught me
that we need to deal with pokémon
like we need to deal with
people, as individuals,
if we want to discover
their mysteries.
Is that why you decided to take
care of so many pokémon, Professor?
Yes, it is.
And not only does every pokémon I
care for become part of my research,
but they also become
part of myself.
A part of yourself?!
James: My legs are k*lling me.
Meowth:
My paws are poundin'!
James: Whose idea was it
to come in the back way?
Meowth:
It wasn't mine.
Jessy: Oh, stop
your complaining.
Professor oak's
research area is gigantic.
Well, I'm getting tired.
Meowth; Well,
let's take a cat nap.
Jessy; Quiet!
Keep walking!
Jessy and James: Aah!
If those are kakuna...
There must be...
Beedrill near by.
Run for your lives!
[Screams]
We should have known they would
be in a pokémon researcher's garden!
Then why didn't we?!
Quit fightin'.
Keep runnin'.
[Screams]
Unh...
Unh..
Get the license plate number.
Huh?
Huh?
All: Snorlax?!
[Snores]
[Screams]
[Screams]
Every morning I start my day
by checking on all the pokémon.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Good!
Now who needs to come
out of their Pokéballs today?
Then I let the pokémon
out of their Pokéballs,
so they can get a bit of
exercise and fresh air.
Of course I've created special
habitats for each type of pokémon.
Then it's time to feed the
pokémon their breakfast.
You can imagine how long it takes
to feed so many different pokémon.
As soon as I'm done,
it's time for lunch.
[Chuckles]
In the afternoon,
I begin my research.
For example, I've recently been studying
the variations of individual pokémon
of the same types.
The findings are
extremely interesting.
Then there's dinner, and
back into the Pokéballs they go.
And that's basically
what I do every day.
You must learn a lot,
living with so many pokémon.
Yes, living here certainly
gives me a unique opportunity
to research and communicate
with lots of interesting pokémon.
Daa.
Hiya, doduo. How's
everything going today?
Da-da.
Is that your doduo?
Dexter: Doduo,
the twin bird pokémon.
It runs faster than it can fly.
Ohh.
Professor, this is such a great
Place, the pokémon must love it.
I hope so, Brock.
I designed this Place so I could
study pokémon the proper way,
in their natural habitat,
living free.
When pokémon live in an environment
like the one they were born in,
it's easier to observe how they
are affected by their trainers.
In fact, I've just made an
interesting discovery in that area.
Uh, what was it?
Pokémon frequently take on the characteristics
of the humans who capture them.
Huh?
Huh?
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hey, that's true.
Like misty and Psyduck.
Huh? Ridiculous!
Brock: You know what that means?
Huh?
I think I might have
a girlfriend.
Suzie loved her vulpix
and gave it to me.
Now if the vulpix is like me,
and she still loves it,
that means she loves me.
[Sighs] Hey! What's
up with this guy?
He's on vacation
in fantasy land!
Pika.
Of course. This effect only occurs
when a trainer keeps in regular contact
with his or her pokémon.
Because ash always uses the same
pokémon, his krabby and muk stayed here
and so it's not surprising that they've
become somewhat attached to me.
Bub-bub-buh-buh.
All: Huh?
Baah!
[Screams]
No, muk. How many times
have I told you not to do that?
You're muking up
my favorite lab coat.
You see, I told you pokémon
get attached to you, didn't I?
Aah!
[Panting]
We'll have to do
this the hard way.
The hard way's our specialty.
I can hardly stand this.
Quit whining and keep climbing
or we'll never get
that Pikachu! Huh?
Dude.
Go, Geodude!
Huh? Huh?
Sandshrew.
Sandshrew!
[Screams]
Sandshrew!
Oh, my makeup is ruined!
[Rumbling]
James and jessy: Hmm?
James and jessy: Huh?
[Roars]
All: Run for it!
[Roaring]
Oh, wow!
Look at all the water pokémon.
Professor, I bet you
have every kind of pokémon
in the world here, don't you?
Definitely not, ash.
We believe there are lots of
pokémon that no one has ever captured
or even seen.
Yeah, some people used to say
that there were only pokémon.
Then we discovered togepi.
Toge. Toge.
Yeah, come to think of it...
The day I left pallet, I saw a pokémon
that Dexter didn't even know about.
It's still a great mystery.
No one knows how many kinds of
pokémon there are in this world.
Finding new and different
pokémon is a never ending quest.
You know, Professor, I'm going to find
as many new pokémon friends as I can.
Me, too. And I'm gonna
train them to be
as strong as they can be.
They really love pokémon.
Then maybe they can like
each other.
Togepi.
Come on, ash, what do you say
we have a pokémon battle?
We could both use a little
practice before the pokémon league.
All right, Gary,
I'm ready when you are.
