[eerie music]

VOICEOVER:A dark night.

A figure moves through the silent forest

on the estate of Collinwood.

A man on a desperate mission.

For to save himself, Jeb Hawkes must turn the shadow

onto the devil's emissary, Nicholas Blair.

And Angelique has warned Jeb what a dangerous move this is.

For Nicholas is very aware of the shadow and what it means,

and so Jeb must trick him into accepting him.

If I had all my powers, there would be no Angelique here.

Imagine, her coming here, to taunt me.

Yes, taunt me.

[suspenseful music]

[door thuds]

Who's there?

[door closes]

JEB: Thought we would never meet again.

I had hoped that would be true.

But we must, oh, yes.

There's too much left undone.

We must talk, perhaps for the last time.

[suspenseful music]

[eerie music]

One, last time.

My, my, my, that does sound ominous.

I didn't mean it to sound ominous, Nicholas.

Well, Nicholas, I know I was wrong to do what I did,

to destroy the cairn.

More important, to destroy your true self.

I wanted to be human.

Well, it's a most impractical desire.

You could have the world.

Now what do you have? Only the prospect of death.

You're a fool.

I knew that before I came here.

Then why did you come?

To see, to see if you could help me.

Well, now, you certainly are terrified

of that shadow, aren't you?

Can't you do something?

[Laughs] And let you live the life of a country gentleman?

I'll live any kind of life you want me to!

I trusted you once.

It was a mistake.

Well, you can trust me again.

Can I?

Can I, really?

We cannot go back to where we were, I know that.

I've destroyed that,

but surely there's gotta be some use for me.

Well now, very possibly, there is.

Yes.

Perhaps we can recoup something.

Something that would be to my advantage

because of course, it would have to be to my advantage,

you understand that?

You would be willing to do anything I said, this time?

JEB: Anything.

Shall we drink on that?

Will you make the shadow disappear?

Well, it will have to be turned on to someone else.

That is the only way it will end.

But I have someone in mind.

Someone who interferes with me, constantly.

And I do not like interference.

Well, whoever thought we would be allies again?

[sinister music]

To new and bigger projects.

Whatever they may be.

Now do you still have the paper pattern

that Angelique used to start the shadow?

- Yes. - NICHOLAS: Where is it?

At Collinwood.

Well, we shall have to be very careful about planning this

because it must be turned on her,

and it will be a very difficult thing to do.

I will do it.

[mysterious music]

NICHOLAS: Look at me.

JEB: What are you,

what are you doing to me?

Now, you have underestimated me, Jeb,

and I, you.

I thought you were cleverer than you are.

Look at me!

Did you really think you could go back?

Did you really think I would give you a second chance?

You will see your death in my eyes, Jeb.

Your death and Carolyn's, too.

For I am not a man who forgives, Jeb.

It is time you were realistic about that.

You came here to k*ll me.

But I am going to end up k*lling you.

Look at me.

No!

[Nicholas yells]

Look now!

[words drowned out by yelling]

[Nicholas yells]

- SKY: Nicholas! - What?

Oh, my God.

[Nicholas gasps and screams]

Nicholas!

[mysterious music]

Will you stop trying to find out

what's wrong with me, Uncle Roger.

I can't do that, Carolyn, don't ask me to.

I'm too concerned for you.

You've changed so since your marriage.

You're more nervous, you're more upset.

Please, leave me alone.

I can't do it, dear.

Please let us help you.

Don't deny that there's a problem.

I admit there is, yes.

Then what is it?

Don't ask me that, Uncle Roger, don't.

It's for Jeb and me to solve.

Only, how can we?

How can we?

[suspenseful music]

You had to make sure he was dead, didn't you?

Well, he is!

But you won't get away with it.

You won't get away with it.

He won't allow it! He's not human!

But he'll be back!

[door shuts]

Nicholas.

You are alone now, Sky.

All alone.

But I will help you.

You must revenge this.

Jeb Hawkes must die.

[ominous music]

I'll do whatever you want.

You are the only one left.

It is up to you now.

But you must tell me how.

Yes, yes, I still have some powers.

I will use them.

Will the shadow be waiting for me in this house?

What if she has tricked me?

[suspenseful music]

Carolyn?

Carolyn?

Carolyn!

Jeb!

Jeb, what's wrong?

Carolyn, it's all over.

It's all over.

Look, look, it's all over!

[gentle music]

Jeb!

We're free!

It's gone.

We're free.

CAROLYN: Are you sure?

What happened?

Carolyn, I,

I had to turn it on Nicholas Blair.

He's dead.

Carolyn, I had to do it.

He was gonna k*ll me.

I had to do it.

He was trying to hypnotize me.

So I took the thing out of my pocket,

I put the shadow, I placed it on his heart,

and he screamed, and I ran out.

I didn't even see the shadow.

But honey, it's over now.

It's over.

I think of all the trouble I've put you through,

and all I wanted to do was give you happiness.

But I will now, Carolyn.

Now, I will.

Will you, Jeb?

We must leave here, we must.

Run away?

No, no, no, we'll just go to a place,

any place, just so we're away, away from all of this.

CAROLYN: Jeb, Jeb, where would that be?

I don't know, just any place.

Will we find a place?

Will we?

Will there be someone there

who hates you as much as Nicholas Blair?

JEB: No, no.

How can you be sure?

Jeb, why did he hate you so?

Look, Carolyn, that's all gone, now.

That's all in the past.

I mean there's not even, no point in discussing it.

Carolyn, let's just leave, get out of here, tonight.

CAROLYN: We ran away once before.

Yeah, but the shadow is on us, now.

This time it's different.

Wherever we go, it's gonna be different.

We can forget everything that's happened here.

Yes, yes, we can.

We must.

Wherever we go, we will be different, Carolyn.

I promise you that.

Now go, go pack your clothes.

We can't go tonight, I must tell my mother.

Well tell her now.

We'll leave tomorrow morning.

Oh, Carolyn, Carolyn, nothing can happen now.

Nothing.

Now, go tell her.

[suspenseful music]

VOICEOVER:You will never leave here, Jeb.

Never.

The dead will not let you.

Why are you in here alone?

I thought my father was in here with you.

Oh, no, nope, he isn't.

Where you going?

I'm going to the carriage house.

DAVID: Why?

I'm gonna pick up some camera equipment there.

Why don't you wait and get it in the morning?

Oh, no, because I'm leaving, with Carolyn.

We're going on a trip, tonight.

[suspenseful music]

[door closes]

ROGER:Somehow, we must discover

the secret of this room.

Is Barnabas right?

Is what we were seeing parallel time?

Do we really all live other lives in other bands of time?

Why am I afraid to open the door?

What is so threatening?

[dramatic music]

David!

Why'd you go away?

It's been so long.

You promised you'd come back.

You said, "Daniel, whatever happens, I'll be back."

Please, come back, please.

I miss you so much.

So this is where you hide.

[laughs]

If I were Quentin, I'd lock this room up.

Father would never do that!

CAROLYN: Oh, don't be too sure.

When he comes back--

When he comes back, she'll be here too.

CAROLYN: Oh, no, no, she won't be.

She's never coming back.

But you said--

People die, Daniel.

That's the end of it.

No, you're going to have a new mother, now.

Don't say that.

Don't ever say that.

I won't have a new mother.

I won't, I won't!

Shh, Daniel.

I'm ashamed of you.

Do you want servants to hear you?

Or Amy?

Carolyn!

Carolyn, surely you can see me?

Hear me?

Carolyn!

[door handle clatters]

[suspenseful music]

A child who looks exactly like my son.

Yet he's called Daniel.

The son of Angelique and Quentin.

When will we know what this means?

When?

[suspenseful music]

When I saw myself in this room.

What a strange life I must be leading, in that time

that is so close to our own, but so different.

I must know what that life is.

I must!

Jeb said we were going away, tonight?

Oh, David, you must have heard wrong.

Carolyn, how come every time I tell you something,

you think I get it mixed up?

He said tonight.

But I wonder why he changed his mind?

Why didn't he say something to me about it?

I wish you wouldn't go away, Carolyn.

I'm gonna miss you.

You're not gonna stay away forever, are you?

No, not forever.

This will always be home to me.

All I know, is that when I grow up, I'm leaving.

I'm going where the action is.

Action?

I know where the action should be.

In your bedroom.

Come on, David, it's late.

DAVID: Do I have to go to bed, now?

Carolyn's going away.

Everything is all right, Uncle Roger.

Is it?

What was the matter?

CAROLYN: Whatever it is, it's over now, David.

Come along, young man, I'll take you upstairs.

If you want to chat later, Carolyn, I'll be in my room.

Now come on, no nonsense.

I'll probably never see you again.

CAROLYN: Oh, David,

I'll bet you that tomorrow morning,

I'm still here.

[suspenseful music]

[man laughs]

VOICEOVER:Carolyn.

Carolyn Hawkes.

[man laughs]

The former Carolyn Stoddard.

Mrs. Jeb Hawkes.

Widow's Hill.

That is where it will end, Carolyn.

Widow's Hill.

Would you like to see how it would happen?

Would you?

Carolyn!

Carolyn!

Carolyn!

Carolyn, is that you?

You k*lled Nicholas Blair.

You're as free of him as I am.

You can go back, back to your old life.

No, Jeb, no!

Don't try anything, Sky.

Don't try!

[suspenseful drumming]

[bodies thump]

No, no!

[Jeb screams]

Jeb, Jeb!

[thunder crackles]

DAVID: Carolyn!

David, go back to bed.

- Are you all right? - Go back to bed.

Where you going?

CAROLYN: To Widow's Hill.

DAVID: Why you going the back way?

CAROLYN: It's faster!

[suspenseful music]

[door closes]

JEB: Hey, what are you doing here?

Waiting for you.

Alone?

Where's Carolyn?

She went off to Widow's Hill.

[thunder rumbles]

[eerie music]

Jeb?

Jeb?

How silly I am.

Believing a dream.

Jeb's not here.

[thunder rumbles]

[leaves rustle]

Jeb?

No.

Yes, Mrs. Hawkes, I am here, even if Jeb is not.

You see, Nicholas didn't show you

everything that was to happen.

He spared your feelings,

not wanting you to witness your own death.

[Carolyn screams]

I'm afraid, Mrs. Hawkes, there is no escape.

[Carolyn screams]

[eerie music]
