[woman] Um, so let's talk prom.

Right? Um, prom is next weekend!

If you haven't done your RSVP form yet,

make sure that, uh, you go ahead

Did anybody get some inspiration
on Pinterest or something

to try and figure out some colors
or any ideas? Any suggestions?

Come on in.
Welcome to our humble abode.

Wow.

Look at this. How awesome is this?

-Oh, my gosh.
-Lego did this.

That is amazing.

Isn't that cool?

My name is Tara Bordeaux.
I live in Austin, Texas.

I teach cinematic arts media and design

at Navarro Early College High School.

Some of the programs that we offer
here at Navarro are business programs.

We have cosmetology.
We have electrician programs,

where our students can graduate
with a high school diploma

and an associate's degree
right out of these programs.

-Hi!
-Hi!

-Hi!
-[Bobby] Hi, how's it going?

-[Jonathan] Hi!
-Let me introduce you to my friend.

This is Tara, and she's the director
of cinema at Navarro High School.

-Teacher of the year in 2018 in Texas.
-[Fab Five cheering]

-The whole state?
-The state, yes.

-State? Whoa!

Also you are head of the prom committee,
and this week, we're doing a prom!

-[Fab Five] Yay!
-[Bobby] Stop!

[Karamo] Come sit down
and get comfortable.

All right.

I wanna know, why do you need our help?

I want to nominate
the Navarro High School prom committee.

We need help with prom.
Like, a lot of help.

We have one week to try to make
a prom happen because due to COVID,

we were just given the green light
to do it.

Our school has, like, a courtyard that's
their main place that they all hang out.

Due to COVID restrictions,
we have to have an outdoor prom

and because of that,
we have to have prom in the courtyard,

because we don't have the funds
to go and get an outdoor venue.

So, for the kids, there's this mix
of excitement and disappointment,

because it's kind of like,
"Well, it's gonna be wack."

This is gonna be probably the first time
the students have seen each other

because of COVID, right?

For a lot of them, yeah. A few of them
might have seen them on testing days.

But kids haven't seen each other.

So, what has this last year
been like for them?

For them it's like,
we have this campus that's empty.

So, one of my kids
actually said that it felt apocalyptic.

When you walk in,
you're just walking into, like, emptiness.

You don't see your friends.

When they come, it's more like,
"Okay, I'm here by myself."

[Karamo] Yeah.

And so we have very few students
on campus now,

and here they are, seniors,
and we're not together.

They're not getting
the experiences that we all do.

And you have to watch just
a black box on Zoom with a name.

We have about 10% of our students who have
returned to campus this year in person.

Uh, many of our students
have stayed at home.

So, for a lot of our kids,
depression hits because you feel alone.

You don't have your friends,
your teachers.

It's literally just login,
same thing every day,

the monotony of online, virtual learning

and the absence
of any type of social connections

with any of their peers or their teachers.

I'm so excited to hear
about the prom committee.

-Who are they? How many people?
-There are seven students.

How are y'all promoting this?

Like, how are we making sure
that we have a good turnout?

A bunch of people are saying that it
might be lame and, like, people won't go.

They… They don't even wanna come,
'cause they know it's in the courtyard.

And it's hard because
all that money missing, like, fundraisers,

and we didn't have any fundraisers
or any sponsors, anything like that.

So, that's what's tough.

-We need to try our best, guys.
-Yeah.

-[girl] Yeah.
-[boy] We do.

We need to make this happen
and make it a night to remember.

Arely is our president.
She just recently moved to the country.

She's really quiet,
almost like a wallflower.

I didn't even realize she was so into,
like, film and movies. She works so hard.

There's, like,
a trailer that sells, like, shaved ice,

but it's really amazing and good,

and if it's in the budget. Most likely
not, but, you know, a guy can dream.

-[laughing]
-[Tara] Emilio, he is our co-president.

He's involved in
the electrical program at our school.

Great kid, just so full of life.

For tables and things,
I think the roses are nice,

but I think hydrangeas
and tulips are a little bit better.

[Tara] Diego is actually a junior
who is graduating a year early.

Diego is so creative.

Bryan is such a great athlete.

He connects with people.

Every turn he makes, he surprises you.

[Heidi] What do y'all mean
"eating supplies"?

-I think they mean utensils.
-[all laughing]

[laughs] Yeah.

[Tara] There's Emilia.

She is a fantastic writer.

She writes poetry in Spanish.

Are these, like, clear or yellow?

-We gotta work with what we got.
-Yeah.

[Tara] Ali is the co-captain
of our cheer squad,

so she's just vocal about the prom,

how it should look, the design.

Mari gets involved with community events.

She's very much the type of student
that whatever you put in front of her,

she's gonna try her best to overcome it.

-Our school is 90% Latino community.
-Okay.

Which makes it, like, unique,
because the traditions are so deep

and they're so amazing.

We have one of the most
diverse campuses in Austin.

We have immigrants who come
from many different countries.

Some of our students work
multiple jobs to help their families.

They are dealing with
all kinds of different obstacles,

trying to learn a new language,
a new culture,

and this school kind of
becomes their second home.

So they're actually getting together
with Ms. Kayser, the other co-sponsor,

today to start
to plan kind of what they're gonna do,

And so I think we're all excited

Maybe we can just, like, do some sage.

[laughing]

[boy] You're gonna need a lot of sage.

[Bobby] We'll sage it. We'll spruce up
the trees a bit after that freeze.

That courtyard is the heart of the school,
but it didn't feel like the heart.

It felt like the fart of the school,
and that's not fun.

-Yeah.
-Is it normally like this?

-[Bryan] No…
-[Medina] Yes. It's only 'cause of COVID.

-Yeah.
-[Medina] Normally it's full.

-[Ali] Lunch, everyone's gotta be here.
-[Karamo] Got it.

This is our time capsule.

What?

I was really expecting, like,
a small box that you bury in the ground.

This has history from,
do you know how many decades back?

-Oh, at least 30 years back, maybe.
-Yeah.

Thirty years all the way back.
I think this is pretty cool.

-Yeah.
-[Tan] Me too.

[Bobby] What's it been like
doing school from home?

I still don't know most of my classmates
in most of my classes

because all we see are,
like, black squares with names. [laughs]

My grades have taken a hit,
my relationships.

All my friends, we haven't stuck together.

[Arely] It's a lot.

I didn't get any of the senior experience

that you get to see, like,
in movies, TV shows.

I'm from Mexico, you know?

Having that opportunity
to tell my family in Mexico that,

"Well, I went to a prom dance,"
you know? [laughs]

-Like the ones you saw on TV.
-[laughs] Yes!

Having prom might be
the last chance for some students

to get to see their friends
or teachers, you know.

I wanna understand
why this is important.

-I've been through a lot this senior year.
-[Tan] Okay.

And it's been a lot of losses,

and I just think that I deserve at least
to have something to celebrate.

-Yeah, I like that.
-Yeah.

And how about you, Diego?

Well, I'm an early graduate.
Uh, I'm only 16.

Um, and so
when I decided to graduate early,

I kind of missed out
on a lot of, like, the senior stuff.

Okay.

I wanna make sure that I have
something to remember my senior year as.

You know, it's interesting that
when I heard you guys speak earlier on,

when I hear you speak now,

prom seems to be so much
of it's an end to something.

It's an end of school.

I see it as, like, a rebirth.

Yes, this is one final moment to celebrate
everything that I've been through,

commiserate everything I've been through
and leave that person behind

and look at me now, bitch.

-That's what I would be seeing it as.
-[laughing]

This is a way to say, "Peace out, life
that I used to have. Now watch me fly."

Who's gonna be doing your hair for prom?

Each other. [laughs]

-[Jonathan] I love it, team!
-Doing each other's.

I've been cutting my own hair
for the longest time. [laughs]

We just call that kitchen beautician.

-[Arely] Yeah, exactly.
-Which is fine.

But last year during the pandemic,
I dyed my hair for the first time.

It was just a regular box dye.

And it fried it?

Yes, it was so dry. My hair was dry.

I personally still don't know
how I will look that day, for prom.

Because it was probably so up in the air.

With our expectations,

it's like you're scared to have one,
then have it not happen.

Yeah.

It's like this arm has the chills
because I'm excited,

but then this arm has the chills
because I'm nervous.

-We only have four days.

-Are we gonna slay this prom so hard?

Are we gonna look better
than we've ever even thought?

[Arely and Emi] Yes!

[Jonathan] Oh, my God.

-Okay, Emilio. Bryan. The prom.
-Yes, yes.

Why are you so excited about it?

Honestly, I wanna,
like, really have good food.

Okay, what do you wanna have?
What's the dream?

It's celebratory.
Something that's special.

-Flautas, I guess.
-Flautas?

-Is it kind of like a taquito, a bit?
-Yeah.

-So it's basically rolled up and crunchy?
-Crunchy.

[Emilio] Small and cute. Know what I mean?

Not something huge
where you just, like, you know…

Yeah, 'cause it's like an elegant affair.

Everyone's gonna be dressed up,
and you wanna have something small

that's a personal,
like, little bite situation

with some kind of, like, a dipping sauce?

-Wow. That sounds really good.
-Honestly, that made me hungry.

Where did this love for food come from?

It's an icebreaker.

I feel like it connects people.

All the best conversations happen around
a table, even if we don't have food.

What is this specific room that we're in?

-This room is called the Gold Room.
-Yeah.

Where we keep
all of our old yearbooks and everything.

[Karamo] So, this room
is what shows the legacy.

What type of legacy
are you all leaving behind?

I remember
we talked about earlier, a time capsule.

Is that something that
you all will be able to do?

Uh, hopefully, we get the chance
to put something in.

What you and your classmates have
been through this year, during a pandemic…

That's something that
I don't think any generation, you know,

except for maybe, like, you know,
when there was the Great Depression,

will really understand what it was like

for people to collectively
go through something.

The legacy my generation
wants to leave behind is

we made it through a whole pandemic.

We didn't get any of the experience
of previous senior classes.

And I feel like, in a way, that's a reason
why we're taking this prom so serious.

You guys ready for the best prom ever?

[all] Yes!

-What's your school cheer?
-[Arely] Once a Viking, always a Viking.

[Emi] Like, that's, like, our slogan.

[all] Once a Viking…

-Always a Viking!
-[cheering]

All right, let's create
an amazing prom for you all.

[Tan] Prom is a moment
that you truly do not forget.

I wanna make sure that
these kids feel the way they wanna feel.

So, when they look back
on these pictures in ten, 20, 30 years,

they'll remember that moment so fondly

and understand why
they wore what they wore.

[Antoni] Walking in,
I really thought it was just about

making sure that
we had awesome food trucks

to make sure that this was a big party,

but the more students that I meet,

it just brings a new level
of importance to this prom.

[Jonathan] I want these kids
to have a memorable experience,

this moment of community and joy
and just dancing and making memories.

They missed out on
a year of making memories.

So we wanna make sure that this night
has every gorgeous memory possible, honey.

Memories on memories on memories, honey.

Boots on boots
on gifts on gift bags, honey. Gift bags!

[Karamo] This school is all about legacy,

but there is no class
that has a legacy like this class.

The courtyard I see as an amazing space

for kids to be hanging out
and eating lunch,

but it's definitely not somewhere
that I would wanna have a prom

So we were talking about
the perfect food to have

to make sure that it feels
celebratory and special.

I did some research. One thing that was
kind of floating around was, uh, flautas,

which you're a big fan of.

They're made with flour tortillas,
and they're quite large.

But a taquito is made
with a corn tortilla,

and it's decadent but cute,
and you can eat it with your fingers.

[Ali] Yeah! It's great for prom.
This was a good idea.

[Antoni] It wasn't my idea.

Period.

I thought it'd be nice if we have
not one, not two, but three…

-Yes!
-…different fillings.

Ooh, yes!

We have our chicken filling,
which I'm gonna explain a little bit,

and then we have, for the cheese lovers,

a mix of Oaxaca cheese and Cotija,
which is kind of like a Parmesan.

It's a little grittier and dryer,

and so that's gonna add
the salt and flavor to it.

We have some green chilies mixed in there,

and then finally,
some healthy-ish refried beans.

I mixed in some pico de gallo.
So, those are ready to go.

I'm gonna start by just
assembling the chicken version,

and then we're kind of gonna divide
and conquer and all make these together,

and then you're gonna taste these taquitos

and let me know
if they work for prom or not.

So here we have our chicken.

The chicken could get a little dry,
so we need a lot of wet ingredients.

We have a rojo sauce
that I'm just gonna dump in.

Caesar chipotles in adobo.

-Spicy AF, but not aggressively so.
-[students laughing]

And then we have…
Do you know what this is?

-Paprika?
-[Antoni] Paprika.

-You know. He knows.
-[laughs]

And then we have a bit of cumin
and then a bit of garlic powder.

-And by a little, I meant a lot.
-[students laughing]

[Antoni] Some salt because
we do not want these tasting bland.

And then,
how do we all feel about cilantro?

-Oh, I love it.
-[Antoni] It's very polarizing.

-Some people, it tastes like soap.
-Yeah, that's what my sister says.

[Antoni] Right?
It's a genetic thing apparently.

So, I'm just gonna basically
mix all of this up together,

and that chicken is
absorbing all of the sauce.

And so we have three fillings,
go ahead and pick whichever you want.

-I'll take the chicken.
-[Antoni] Okay!

-Thank you.
-I'm a cheesy person.

Cheesy.

We're gonna start
rolling these puppies up.

Take whatever filling it is that you're
doing and put it on the first third.

Then you're just gonna
slowly pull away from you,

and you should have enough extra room
by the end to lay this part out,

and you can just lay it flat,
and it should sit there perfectly.

Okay. Today, we're gonna use
an air fryer, which uses a lot less oil.

I'll actually pass the basket around.

Then each of you
can put in a little taquito.

-Then we have to dip these in something.
-[students] Ooh!

[Antoni] We have a simple pico de gallo.

-[Ali] Yeah.
-Thank you.

Perfect.

So I'm curious. What are your favorite
things the lunch ladies make?

Honestly, I leave during lunch. I go home.

-My dad is quite the chef. So…
-Oh!

So you're going home because
you have a fresh cooked meal there.

-What about the rest of you?

Who are stuck
here at school for lunch.

Most of our students
are economically disadvantaged.

So, we actually
all have free lunch offered.

-[Antoni] Really?
-Yeah.

So that's, like,
a commonly occurring thing here

where, like, young adults aren't,
like, able to get food at home.

So this might be
the most important meal of the day

that is predominantly Latino

and predominantly
economically disadvantaged.

So, a lot of households who have
sometimes six people in their households,

all of them working jobs,
students who are working jobs,

full-time, and then they're working jobs,

and they're helping their parents out.

They've been through so much.
They've been through a year of heartache.

And to know that
we can give them the gift

of a look that's gonna make them
feel good about themselves,

that is really important to me.

Are you already looking at something
and thinking, "Oh, yeah, that's me"?

-I'm looking at everything!
-[Tan] Good. That's what I wanted to hear.

So your vibe that you're
going for is semi-formal,

which I prefer because
it means you can play a lot.

I wanna make sure that
you all feel your very, very, very best.

Should we start with…

-[Ali] Boys!
-…dudes?

[all cheering] Yeah!

[Tan] Okay, great.

For you guys, you could go for something
a little more formal in the suit,

and I want you to make it
your own in the accessories.

There's a bunch of ties, a bunch of socks.
There's pocket squares. There's belts.

Decide what do you wanna convey?

-I just wanna look good, so…
-[students laughing]

I wanna see your personality.
I'm sure you wanna look back thinking,

"That was me.
It wasn't anyone else. That was me."

And then, Diego, I know your vibe already.

You said you like floral. I love a floral.

People made fun of me online for two years
because I wear so many florals.

But because your suit is gonna be so loud,

I don't think you need to play
as much in the accessory space.

You don't wanna look like
you lost your mind.

[all giggling]

Okay, girls, because it's semi-formal,

there are different silhouettes
you could go for.

Like a cocktail dress or a fishtail.

It's more fitted,
so it's kind of almost a body cut up top,

and then it starts
to filter off into a fishtail.

-Okay? And then we have…
-[girls gasping]

…princess.

That's my vibe.

[Tan] Which is a lot more formal
but gorgeous, nonetheless.

And as the boys do, for you girls,
there's a lot of accessories also.

You can really go all out
and feel the way you wanna feel.

So, boys and girls, would you like
to come up and take a look?

This dress is calling my name.

When you wanna work in
a color into a print,

taking a color from that print

and using it somewhere else
is the best way to do it.

I think the blue pant
matches well with this white.

-I love it together. Okay, good.
-Yeah.

Oh, my gosh…

It's so nice to see that
they actually are really excited

about the clothes
that I've chosen for them.

I was so nervous
they're gonna see these clothes, thinking,

"Grandpa, I'm not wearing any of this."

Thank you so much.

If you wanna head to the back
and give those a try.

They are gonna look amazing in it.

All right, hit it.

[gasps]

I am obsessed.

Yes!

Mari, you look gorgeous.

So chic.

[sighs] Ooh-la-la!

Oh!

You look so dapper.

Yes, yes, yes!

As they walk out, these clothes speak
to every one of these kids individually.

Yes, James Bond.

And they look so happy in them.

Whoo-hoo! [gasps]

Diego, you look so good.

All I want for these kids is
to let their hair down

and to have the night to remember
that they so desperately crave.

So good. So, so, so good.

[upbeat music playing]

Welcome, guys. Sorry you had
to wait a little while, but here we are.

Now, I'm gonna put
you guys on the hot seat.

What is the one thing I want you to take
away from high school? The one thing.

I want you to have a…

Good time? [laughs]

-Plans! Plans!
-You need a plan.

[air rumbles]

Aw, look, they're coming together.

[Antoni] Hey.

-[Karamo] Hey, y'all.
-Hi!

[Karamo] I wanna bring
these students together

so they can talk about a time capsule.

These students are resilient,
and we have to honor that resilience.

-Do you know why you're here?
-[all] No.

You're all going to Disney…
No, I'm joking.

-[all laughing]
-I'm joking. I wish I could do that.

I swear to God, I would.

No, no, no, I just really actually wanna
talk to you all-- Sorry to cuss, teachers.

But y'all some resilient-ass students.

Real talk, I really think that, like,
this school's so big on legacy,

and the legacy that you all are leaving
behind is really part of your resilience,

part of this resiliency story right now.

And I was thinking about the time capsule.

Are you all gonna be
participating in that?

Of course.

You like, "Yes, I am."
Tell me. You like, "Yes, I am."

It's my cross-country shoes.
My coach is amazing. She's so amazing.

She made me go more
into my academics because

I was seen as somebody who wouldn't,
like, make it, but I made it.

-No, I made it. So…
-[cheering]

-My cheer shoes. Yeah.
-[Karamo] Cheer shoes?

What were some of the highlights
and joyful moments

that you did have during the pandemic?

-You're like, "Girl, there was nothing."
-There was nothing.

Um, pandemic for me was extremely hard,
because I lost somebody,

and he was in Cuba. It was my uncle.

And we couldn't go over there.

Yeah.

It was extremely hard,
just in a Zoom meeting.

And then your whole family
is breaking down by your side.

[Karamo] Mm-hmm.

My great-grandma, she couldn't
handle the pain that he passed away,

and so she passed a day
before my birthday.

I don't know how I made it, but here I am.

[Karamo] Yeah.

These stories let future generations know,

"We were here. We experienced
something that no one could imagine,

and we made it through," and that's
what has to go in the time capsule.

So, I have a little assignment. [laughs]

-I'm professor now.
-[students laughing]

I really want you all
to write some things down

about what this past year
has meant to you.

Let's say, like, in the next day,
we work on something,

and when we see each other next,

you'll have what you wanna put
in the time capsule. That work?

[Emilio] That feels great.

[Karamo] Boom!
All right, now, next lesson.

This is how you dance when you at prom.
Okay? All right. Okay?

Class of '99, we were twerking like this.
We was-- Y'all was there.

-[shushing]
-Y'all was there.

[laughing]

[Bobby] This quad,
it's where people have lunch.

It's where people gather
before and after school.

No matter where you're going
throughout your day, you cross through it.

Renovating this quad
and giving the next class a fresh start

and a place to hang and it really being
the heart and soul of the school again,

is gonna be amazing.

How many of you have started your final?

Okay, I'm seeing some of y'all are like…

Hi!

-Hi. Oh, my gosh.
-[Arely] You look amazing.

Hi, everyone! Okay, you're in this chair.

You are in this chair.

You are in this chair.

This is Tyler. He's so good.
You're in such good hands.

Ah, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Ah, can I just have your attention?

I am your teacher for today.
I am, um, Professor Van Ness.

I'm just kidding. Can you imagine?
You know, just kidding.

So our goal for this
gorgeous class moment is

I want everyone
to feel amazing for your prom.

All of these people
are incredible stylists.

They're gonna take such good care of you.

You need to tell your stylist,
"Am I wearing open shoulders?"

"Am I wearing halter?
What is the shape of my dress?"

"How is that gonna look
with my hair up or down?"

These are things to tell your stylist
when you're going to a formal occasion.

So you need to talk about your outfit.
[gasps]

Very important.

Like, it all has to work together.

Are we a little excited
to have the best prom of all time?

[students] Yeah!

[Jonathan] Yay!
Okay, get to know your people.

It's weird, 'cause my texture,
because of the humidity has been, like…

-[man] Curly?
-[Diego] Yeah.

-I was thinking for the bottom, curls?
-Love that. Yeah.

[Jonathan] Well, how do you feel
about the color?

Honestly, I don't mind
having my hair black.

I think it looks good on me.

[Jonathan] It's pretty.

I could do a few highlights
around your face.

Yeah.

Then I could lowlight this part

and take, like, a semi-permanent
dark, dark brown that's closer to this,

-but it'll start to fade out.
-Ooh!

And so then that way we can start
to grow your natural color back,

and it won't be so awkward
in the meantime.

We could do that.

-[Arely] Yes.
-[Jonathan] Let's do like this.

-You like that story?
-[Arely] Sounds great.

[Jonathan] What are you gonna do?

Okay, so she is
growing her hair out from a bob.

[Jonathan] Yes.

I was thinking maybe we could do
some sort of off-the-side.

-[Jonathan] I was thinking that too.
-That would look nice.

[woman] Kind of like,
but she still has the curl.

-[Jonathan] I got chills.
-[laughs]

-Yes! Have fun!
-[Mari] Go, team!

I want these kids to feel beautiful

and confident about their hairstyle
throughout prom

and not be worrying
about it every two seconds.

-Yes.
-Oh, my gosh.

-[laughing]
-[Jonathan] The thickness, the density.

Okay, so what you wanna do?

-Silk press.
-Yes, queen.

I have never had it,
like, fully straightened.

Is your mom gonna k*ll us?

-[laughing]
-No, she… she wants--

-[Jonathan] She's into it?
-Yeah.

Have fun. I love you to pieces.
I'm so excited to be here.

Wow, Austin's barber scene
really came to play today.

Everyone is so talented.

What's your plan with your hair today?

We need to hear about it
'cause these two are best friends.

I want to take
a little bit for my hair back.

[Jonathan] Yes. So, half up, half down?

-Yeah.
-Girl after my own heart.

[laughs]

[Jonathan] Where do
you wanna go to school?

-I'm taking a year off because--
-You are?

-Yes.
-How European of you.

[Arely laughs]

-They do the whole gap year thing.
-Yeah.

I need to focus on myself, like, grow,

uh, because I've been
through a lot this past year.

I moved to the States in 2015.

-I was full-on, uh, cultural shock.
-[Jonathan] Right.

You know, moving to a country
where you don't speak the language.

[Jonathan] Right.

You're only 14 and you have
a lot of people telling you what to do,

putting pressure on you
to learn the language.

"Do this, do that."

-And, you know, it was really hard.
-[Jonathan] Oof!

Well, I think it's so healthy
how you know what you need…

-Yes.
-…right now.

There's so many kids
who have had such a rough time,

because school was their escape.

Getting out of the house
and finding their friends

was really where they found themselves.

That's where I found myself.

And so, to have that taken away from you,

that is heartbreaking.

What are you doing to,
like, bring yourself joy?

I mean, I surround myself with
a lot of people that actually cheer me up.

For example, Ali.
I used to do theater with her.

And then, Emi and I
got closer during the pandemic.

-[Jonathan] Right.
-[Arely] And with Mari.

We had business classes together.

Bryan was also in Ms. B's class.
