spiritual warfare leaves
deep wounds on one ghost hunter.
I was there for them,
and I felt like I let them down.

south of Salt Lake City
stands
the Tooele Valley Hospital.
♪♪
Decommissioned in ,
it's since been turned into
a haunted house
for paying customers
known as Asylum .
♪♪
But away from
the carnival scares,
something far more sinister
and real is going on.
Staff and visitors report
numerous interactions
with a powerful entity.
So over on the older side
of the hospital,
there's a spirit called
the Guardian,
and although it sounds
like a kind of protective name,
he's actually very much
the opposite.
♪♪
NARRATOR:
Richard Estep is the founder
of the Boulder County
Paranormal Research Society.
A paramedic by trade,
British-born Richard
has seen over investigations
and prides himself
on his scientific approach
to ghost hunting.
♪♪
I think a good paranormal
investigator
is naturally skeptical,
is not willing to believe
that every creaking floorboard
is a ghost
or something along those lines.
NARRATOR: No stranger to
Tooele Valley Hospital,
Richard has already had
some unpleasant encounters
with its mysterious Guardian.
The Guardian and I
have some history.
We've gotten into it before
on a former investigation.
The last time I'd investigated,
we went to the Guardian's area
to try and see
what was going on with him.
We would hear footsteps prowling
all around us in the dark
and getting closer
and closer to us
until I was squaring off
against the Guardian.
So I got into a yelling match
with something
I couldn't see...
Get away!
...which was pretty surreal.

NARRATOR: In , Richard
returns to the hospital,
choosing the annual Halloween
haunt as the perfect occasion
to spark some
supernatural communication.
He is accompanied by fellow
ghost hunter Jason Fellon.
So going into the Asylum
Tooele Valley Hospital,
the goals are to make contact
with either new spirits
or entities
or the other ones
we've already made contact with,
and maybe learn
more about them.
NARRATOR: Richard and Jason
together with team members
Eric Manson and Catlyn Keegan
prepare to investigate
the areas
which are not open
to the public.
Tooele Valley Hospital is always
a special place to investigate,
but this time out, it was
a little more disconcerting
than it usually is for me.
I didn't feel comfortable.
In fact, I felt uneasy
and on edge,
and that's very, very unusual.
NARRATOR: A crucial part of
the investigation
will be separating
the fake ghosts
from the real ones.
One of the things you've always
got to be wary of is
they have these props
with sensors that trigger them,
so I take the sensor and I put
it facedown on the ground.
There's no way physically
then this beam can be broken
because it's in contact
with the ground.
NARRATOR: The team decides
to start an EVP,
or an electronic
voice phenomena session
in the hope of capturing
some communications
with the spirits.
Hello, is there anyone here?
We are asking questions,
when all of a sudden,
I hear just this hiss.
♪♪
And the banshee comes flying
out of the dark at us.
♪♪
I was actually doing a handheld
video camera, night vision,
and I caught the banshee
once it started triggering.
I heard a pneumatic go off.
I turned my camera,
panned to it,
and saw it come out on video,
and it shook and scared
the hell out of Richard.
♪♪
-Should that have happened?
-I didn't touch anything.
Nobody touched anything.
ESTEP:
I jump halfway out of my skin.
I am not ready for this,
and it shouldn't be possible.
How could that happen?
I know where I put that sensor.
I look at the sensor.
It's still facedown.
The beam's not broken,
which means there's somebody
in that room that pushed
the banshee's f*ring button.
♪♪
In the same hallway
as the banshee,
you also have the old
labor and delivery wing,
and you have the nursery,
so very much a focus
on children and newborns.
We wanted to do some
EVP sessions over there
and see if we could record
evidence of babies crying,
of the nurses talking,
something along those lines.
The vibe in that area
is very dark.
There's creaks and sounds
that happen all the time
that can make you think
that you're hearing things
when you don't,
so it definitely puts you
in a state of mind
of something
could be happening soon.

Jason catches
the sound of a voice.
What was that?
One of the characteristics
of an EVP
is you generally
don't hear it at the time.
It turns up later
on the playback.
What Jason experiences
is something altogether
more interesting --
It's a disembodied voice.
He hears a voice say,
"She's dead."
There are stories
that the labor and delivery
wing itself
is haunted by a relatively young
girl that d*ed in childbirth.

NARRATOR: Feeling overwhelmed
by the rush of activity
so early in the investigation,
the team decides
to take a break,
but the spirits have
something else in mind.
See if we can get
that Guardian --
One of the doors shut.
♪♪
We go check.
That's kind of odd.
We open them back up.
The doors close themselves
a second time.
♪♪
When the door shuts, that means
it's poltergeist activity.
It means that something is using
its energy to move objects
or to show you
that it has enough energy
to produce more
than just sounds.

NARRATOR:
With the spirit activity
showing no sign of weakening,
Richard decides it's time
to track down his old nemesis,
the Guardian.
ESTEP: We head over to
the Guardian's area.
I want to figure out if he's
active this particular night.
Are you here, Guardian?
Remember me from last time?
FELLON: We were challenging him,
calling him out.

We had a lot of gibberish
at first,
but then things quickly
turned quite nasty.
[ Speaks indistinctly ]
Things suddenly start
to turn very profane.
We get a voice using
the most horrendous
expletives directed at us.
NARRATOR: But things are about
to get worse.
♪♪
Ah!
♪♪
NARRATOR:
In Salt Lake City, Utah,
ghost hunter Richard Estep
has returned to the site
of a former investigation
to settle a score.
ESTEP: The Guardian and I
have some history.
We'd gotten into it before
on a former investigation.
NARRATOR: But Richard
might not be the only one
looking for a rematch.
Ah!
All of a sudden, Catlyn
feels her back is burning.
♪♪
What is that?
Oh, my god,
it scratched you.
It's burning.
A series of scratches
going across her back
that are starting to get
angry and inflamed.
FELLON: We thought that that
would definitely
have something to do
with the Guardian.
That's one of his MOs
is scratching people,
trying to make an impression
with them
and intimidate that way.
Oh.
Are you all right
to keep going?
-Yeah.
-Are you sure?
Yeah, it's good.
It certainly concerns you.
Suddenly, there was
this big figure
that was standing behind Eric.
♪♪
[ Groans ]
Then it started b*ating him
with a fist.
♪♪
Ah! Okay, come on.
We've got to go.
This is getting too dangerous.
Get him out of here.
Get him out of here.
NARRATOR:
Worried for the team's safety,
Richard tells the investigators
to leave the area.

But even in retreat,
the dark spirit follows them.
♪♪
It's definitely becoming darker,
more aggressive,
more intimidating,
and more affecting all of us
than it usually would.
I don't know what the hell is
the matter with all of you.
I give you a simple task,
and you can't even properly --
You can't talk to me like that.
What's your problem?
FELLON: We were arguing.
We were bickering.
We were cussing at each other.
Richard led on this.
He was being affected the most,
I think.
He was very short
with his answers with us.
You can't handle
a simple instruction.
He was being very aggressive
towards certain people
that he usually would be
overly friendly with.
I could do better --
Get out of my way!
Hey, man,
what's your problem?
I'll tell you
what my problem is.
-Stop!
-My problem is you!
I start to snap at my team,
which is a pretty uncool thing
for a team leader to do.
-I'm really sorry.
-It's okay.
It's okay. It's okay.
Let's just get out of here.
I genuinely think that some kind
of influence in that hospital
started to affect all of us to
a greater or a lesser extent.
NARRATOR:
Fearing further deterioration,
the team decides to end
the investigation.
♪♪
We decided to wrap
the investigation up after
we were to a point
where we were going to
maybe be at each other's
throat literally,
and we didn't know
where else it could lead
if we stayed
in the hospital any longer.
I've investigated the home
of a serial k*ller,
never got to me
like this at all.
I've investigated sanatoriums
where thousands
of people have d*ed.
I've investigated some
of the world's most
haunted locations,
and I've never felt
as uneasy as I did here.

NARRATOR: But for Richard,
the data collected
speaks for itself.
This haunted house
is truly haunted.
I think the reward
from this investigation
came in the form
of our evidence.
We had physical phenomena.
We had audio phenomena.
We had a visual apparition.
We had the doors closing.
We had the banshee f*ring,
so we had a full spectrum
of phenomena,
and not many locations
yield that for you.
NARRATOR: As for his conflict
with the Guardian,
Richard is able to draw
some reasonable conclusions.

It's commonly believed that if
you are dealing with an entity
that scratches you
or causes physical harm,
that it's malevolent,
that it is trying to hurt you,
but if that's the only way
you can communicate,

you're gonna do, right?

a residential cleansing
goes terribly wrong
for one investigative team.

It was horrifying.
It was the worst
possible scenario
that we could have come out
of a case like this.

an abandoned hotel
has trouble
letting its guests leave.

over you everywhere
and I felt like they almost,
like, tried to suck us down.

in Yuma, Arizona,
sitting above a casino
in the historic downtown,
the building has long been known
as a hotbed of
paranormal activity.

The hotel closed
several years ago,
but it's claimed that
some guests never checked out.

NARRATOR: Witnesses report
hearing disembodied voices
and seeing
unexplained apparitions.
♪♪
Keen to find answers,
the hotel's caretaker
reaches out to
paranormal investigators.
Former prison guard Jay Yates
has been ghost hunting
for over years,
but he's been witnessing
paranormal phenomena
for a lot longer.
JAY: I've been haunted
my entire life.
I've experienced
paranormal phenomenon
ever since I was a child,
so I've been around
enough of it to really know
when I'm in the presence
of something supernatural
or unexplained.
NARRATOR: Jay's partner in crime
is his wife, Marie.
As a paranormal investigator,
I've probably been on
about or more cases.
I do hear things that sometimes
people say they don't hear.
I do believe it's because
I'm around it all the time.
NARRATOR: Jay and Marie are keen
to witness
the activity of the hotel
for themselves,
but like any good investigators,
they are initially skeptical.
When I heard the information
from the caretaker,
you know,
I figured that, you know,
some of it might have been
a little bit embellished.
The number of witnesses
that have seen things here
keep growing.
NARRATOR: But the sheer volume
of alleged activity
is persuasive.

I thought, you know, there was
a good possibility
that we could catch
something great there.
NARRATOR:
Walking through the hotel,
Marie is immediately aware
of the building's
strange energy.
I don't know what
Jay was feeling,
but I felt overwhelmed.
It felt like things
were watching you
and there was a whole bunch
of eyes on you.
I felt a heaviness over my chest
and everything,
so it was a weird feeling.

NARRATOR: In Yuma, Arizona,
ghost hunters
Jay and Marie Yates
are looking into
an alleged hotel haunting,
but it's starting to seem
like the investigators
are the ones being watched.
♪♪
Jay and Marie begin
their tour of the hotel
and are led to a hot spot
of activity
known as the malevolent room.
♪♪
The history of
the malevolent room,
it's kind of, like, blurred.
No one really knows, like,
why this particular room
is what it is.
There's some stories
that came through and rumors
that a mentally ill man
had took his life
in that particular room.
Whatever that man,
that energy that he pumped
in that particular room
definitely altered
its presence today.
There's something left behind
NARRATOR:
Already unsettled,
the malevolent room starts
to have an effect on Marie.
MARIE:
I started feeling really upset,
feeling that heaviness on me,
getting very anxious and angry.
NARRATOR: With the rest of
the investigative group
having now arrived,
Jay kicks things off
by taking team members
Michael Papp and Jessica Segarra
to set up their equipment,
but the setup is interrupted
by a sudden disturbance.
At that point, I heard screaming
down the hallway.
[ Shouting indistinctly ]
Whoa, whoa!
I had this overwhelming anger
for almost everybody,
and I mean,
so anybody that came
in front of me at that moment,
I probably would have
started yelling at you.
I was expressing my anger
even in front of the caretaker.
NARRATOR:
Both Jay and Marie are unsettled
by Marie's outburst and suspect
a dark spirit is at work.
Knowing that something
could affect me in that way
actually really
is concerning.

NARRATOR: Once recovered,
Marie and Jay
head to the malevolent room
to join the rest of the team.
JAY: The room is weird in
and of itself.
It's got a weird,
strange energy to it,
and I'm trying to really
just pick up
on, like, hey, what is this?
Is this naturally occurring,
or is this something that
I'm experiencing
that's more
of a paranormal-type phenomenon?
NARRATOR:
But something isn't right.
I become more and more
disoriented.
I'm getting kind of confused,
feeling kind of nauseous,
trying to pull myself together
and still trying to lead,
but at the same time,
like, I'm not doing good.
I'm not feeling well at all.
NARRATOR: And then another
feeling starts to take over.

JAY:
Only way I can describe it is,
it's just when you know
when someone walks into a room
or comes up behind you,
you just get that feeling.
It was almost kind of
like a threatening feeling.
-Is there someone behind me?
-No.
No.
Michael, play back
the last seconds.
NARRATOR:
Unnerved by the presence,
the team decides
to check their equipment.

MAN: We are going to scratch
you good!
While we're in this room, we
actually played back an audio,
and it actually
was threatening me.
On that audio session,
it was a male voice,
and it said it was going to
essentially att*ck Marie.
MARIE: That actually really
concerned me
that we actually
picked up an audio
that said
threatening things to me.
The person that actually
spoke those words
could be the one that actually
was taking over my feelings.
At this point,
I wanted to take action.
Jay, let's go.
♪♪
I started feeling like,
it was the weirdest feeling.
We got to this one part
in the hallway.
I honestly felt like I got moved
down, almost like an elevator.
NARRATOR:
And then things get worse.
-Ah!
-What? What?
♪♪
In Yuma, Arizona,
paranormal investigators
Jay and Marie Yates
are pursuing
what they believe
to be a malevolent spirit.
Hurry up, Jay.
NARRATOR: But something
has led them to a dead end.

All of a sudden I felt
like something hit my back.
I was trying to get to the wall,
but everything kept feeling
like it was spinning in a way,
and so I, like, leaned towards
the back of the wall,
and I was just laying there,
and I'm like,
"Jay, no, it's getting worse.
The pain hurts."
Ow. Ow.
Babe, what are you doing?
Oh, my god, there's this pain
on my back.

I see her back and it looked
like they had scratched her
from the lower to the upper
back, and it was red.
MARIE:
What is on my back?
Like, a whole bunch
of scratches, Marie.
I was like, "Okay, I'm done.
I want to get out of here."
♪♪
NARRATOR: But getting out isn't
as easy as it seems.
♪♪
It became a very confusing
situation really quickly,
and at that point,
I kind of forget where we're at
and how to get back
to where we're at,
and I'm seeing shadows.
It felt like this little tunnel
got closed in,
and you felt hands
all over you.
-Ah!
-Stop!
No!
...everywhere, and I felt like
they're almost, like,
trying to suck us down.
-No!
-Go away!
JAY: I remember screaming
for my team.
I remember yelling for them,
and I remember
that nobody would respond.
[ Screams ]
There's something on me!
The room was closing in on us,
for me, was how it felt.
It would almost being, like,
almost, like, in a purgatory
where you're not in heaven,
and you're not in hell,
and you're screaming
for the other side,
but they can't hear you.
It literally felt like we were
in another dimension.
We were not here.
We weren't there, either.
It was like we were
somewhere else,
and we were kind of trapped.
MARIE: I was really scared I was
never gonna see my kids,
so all I could do is
just sit there and pray.
And I kept praying,
and I think it was my faith
that got us out.

-[ Whimpers ]
-Yeah.
[ Screams ]

Where the hell were you?
-What?
-Marie was att*cked.
I meet back up with the team.
I'm very upset
and kind of angry.
I'm angry with the team
to a point...
We were screaming your names.
...because I was screaming
and yelling, and like,
"Why didn't you guys
come help me?"
They all looked at me,
and they're like,
"Jay, like,
we didn't hear you."
NARRATOR:
Shaken by their experience,
Jay and Marie decide to stop
the investigation.

My conclusion of the situation
is that the claims are real.
The place is haunted.
It's something so much more
than a haunted building.
Just to call it haunted
would almost be to downgrade
what it is that's going on
in this particular location.
It's a very intelligent
manifestation
of spiritual energy
in this building.

I would say it's one of the most
haunted locations
that I've visited.
NARRATOR: But for Jay and Marie,
the ordeal isn't quite over.
We both felt like we were
somewhere else
and that nobody was there.
Marie, come on.
It's the only investigation
that ever made me feel like
I was stuck in someplace
almost like hell,
and I couldn't get back out.
I actually felt like it was
taking me somewhere,
and I was never gonna
get back out,
and I've never felt
that way before.
I mean, is it possible?
Is it possible to just bleed
through to the other side?
Maybe that's why we have
missing persons. I don't know.
It definitely has
a lasting effect,
so maybe it still
has a hold on me today.
I still want to go back.

in front of her,
and he started laughing at her,

If it is Marchosias that's
terrorizing this family,
it is very dangerous.
Marchosias is a demonic
commander of all demons.
He has control over
leagues of demons.

they were looking to us
as their saviors
walking through this place.

and my religion

set to work,
the power of the entity
they're about to face
starts to reveal itself.

I've been in a lot
of investigations
where I've dealt with negative
spirits, and they're powerful.
You know, you could feel
their presence,
but in this location, this thing
was a lot more powerful.

the team head
straight to the epicenter
of the activity.

Did you guys hear that?
-Yeah.

ZUZIC: We heard what sounded
like growling sounds
coming from the stairs
going up to the bedroom.
[ Growling ]
There was something there
that didn't want us there.
♪♪
The upstairs bedroom
was very active.
♪♪
You know, going up in that area,
you can feel
the different energy
that sits in that location.
♪♪
NARRATOR:
The investigators' first move
is to try to establish
communication with the spirit.
ZUZIC: We decided to use
the ghost radio.
It's AM/FM radio that's been
modified to scan the bandwidth.
It generates white noise,
and spirits use that
to talk to us in real time.
What is your name?
[ Deep voice ] Marchosias.
The sound that it gave out
sounded evil.
Like, it had a deep voice
like it was strong.
You could hear, "Marchosias!"
And Chris and I looked
at each other and were like,
"Did we just hear that?"
[ Deep voice ] Marchosias.
We play back our recorder,
and sure enough, it's on there.
That right there just documented
that there is an evil
presence in that home.
NARRATOR:
The investigators have brought
a second piece of equipment --
the devil's toy box.
A devil's toy box is a box
that is created out of mirrors,
and the mirrors
are turned inward.
Spirits are known
to get trapped,
so if they enter this box,
they get confused
because of the mirrors,
and then they can't leave.
NARRATOR: The team realizes that
the devil's toy box
is trying
to tell them something.
-The hell is going on?
-I don't know.
At that point, the room
felt like it got a lot darker,
and you could feel
this heaviness come upon you.

What's happening?
He's touching it.
But the next thing you know,
this devil box starts shaking,
and then it just stops.
Do you want us to leave?

In small-town Pennsylvania,
investigator Karlo Zuzic

with a powerful demonic spirit.
That right there just documented
that there is an evil
presence in that home.
The sound that it gave out
sounded evil.

But the communication

But it was so terrifying to
actually feel everything
in a house just vibrate
because it was so violent
how the door slammed.
It was almost so strong, like,

a car had hit the house.

that the atmosphere
is becoming more
and more powerful.
We brought a tool with us
that's designed
to capture spirits or demons,
and once that thing
starts shaking,
we knew that
this thing is strong.
It released itself.
It is mad, and it is strong.
It's making a stand.
This thing has no fear.

We knew at that point that
we need to do something quick.
We need to do something
immediate.
ZUZIC:
We knew we had to start to do
the cleansing and blessing.
NARRATOR: The cleansing is
intended to rid the house
and the family of the demon.

As we're doing this prayer,
Chris is praying,
and I'm doing the holy water.
You could hear what sounds
like an evil, raspy laughter.
It was a strong,
strong presence,
and then it just growled.

You could feel the presence
of this thing.
It's watching us.
You could feel the energy.
But this point is
when you're in real battle
against the evil forces.
This demonic can lash out at us
because it wants nothing but for
you to stop doing the prayer.

You're in spiritual warfare.
You don't have armor.
The only armor you have
is your faith.
I break this family
from any vows they made.

but so is the demon.

ZUZIC: I think once we finished
the blessing,
things seemed to be normal.
It felt different in there.

Satisfied that the house
is finally rid of Marchosias,
Karlo lets the family return.
ZUZIC: When they came back in
the house, they felt relieved.
You could see that we just took,
like,
a ton of pressure
off of them.
They felt more free being
in this house
just because how it changed.
They felt that the negative
presence was gone.
Welcome home.
We told the family that
we believe we b*at this thing.
NARRATOR: Karlo and the team

Feels so much different in here.

return to some kind of normal,
but all is not as it seems.
ZUZIC: A week or two went by
and I decided to give
the family a call
because I wanted
to check on them,
and the husband
answered the phone,
and I started talking to him,
and he didn't sound right,
and he mentioned that his wife
knows this demon
is still in the house,
and she became very depressed.
NARRATOR:
With a growing sense of dread,
Karlo begins to realize
the demon hadn't left.
It had hidden and waited
for another chance to strike.

by this demonic
that in her own head,
she couldn't battle it.
We helped as much as we could
in her physical environment,
but as far as her
internal conflicts,
she couldn't fight it anymore.

that we could have come
out of a case like this.

that she had committed su1c1de,
it broke my heart.
It touches you really hard.
Doing paranormal investigating,
it's not about just getting
something cool on video.
It's the personal side
of things.
It's people's lives
that we're dealing with.
It's somebody that's tormented
both mentally and physically,
and it's not just a game.
It's reality.
We were going up
against a true demonic,
and a woman's life
was hanging in the balance,
and unfortunately, this time,
the demonic won.

When you're dealing
with cases like we do,
I talk to these families
for days, you know, weeks.
They become a part of my family.
I take that very personally
because, you know,
I was there for them,
and I felt like I let them down.
