Posted: 11/08/22 18:15
(dramatic music)
- [Narrator] Robert Young,
and Jane Wyatt.
With Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray, and Lauren Chapin
in Father Knows Best.
- [Bud Voiceover] Reginald waited as she came to him.
Her lips parted in surrender.
Then she (coughing, clearing throat)
she melted in his embrace.
"I'm here
(audience laughs)
"Reginald, darling," she whispered.
He sighed. (sighs)
"I've waited five years to holdheaven in my arms," he said.
Tenderly, he touched her face and hair.
"And you're the same angel-face,with the same golden halo,"
he said. (audience laughs)
"I never could resist yourpretty speeches," she murmured,
lost in his arms.
- Boy, what an operator.
(audience laughs)
- Well, good night now.
- Joyce, I've waited five yearsto hold heaven in my arms.
(audience laughs)(light, romantic music)
- Well, gee, Bud, it sounds beautiful.
But I haven't even known you that long.
(audience laughs)
- You've got the softest brown halo.
(audience laughs)
- Well, I'm glad you like it.
(audience laughs)
- Joyce.
- Yes?
- Um.
Could I kiss you good night?
(Joyce sighs)
Thanks, Joyce.
(audience laughs)
I've fallen for you like a--
(audience laughs)
- Hello, Bud.
- Hi, Mr. Kendall, sir.
I was just gonna open the door for Joyce.
- Well, it's a good thing I got down in time to help.
(audience laughs)
- Yes, thanks a lot.
(comedic music)
- How was the big evening?
- Sensational!
I thought you'd be asleep.
- Oh, we decided to live it up
and have a glass ofmilk before turning in.
- Boy, dancing all evening sure can give you an appetite!
- That's probably Betty
and that new boy she's been raving about.
- Did she finally hook Jerry Preston for a date?
You know, last season, he made All-Conference tackle?
He's a big wheel.
- Shall we go out and give him three cheers?
- We're not pressed to meet him now.
Let's go upstairs before he sees us.
- Good idea.
He might think we waited up just to look him over.
You better come up too, Bud.
- Yeah, as soon as I get a snack.
- (laughs) I've had a wonderful time, Jerry.
- It isn't over yet, dreamboat.
We're going to look at those pictures
in the annual, remember?
- (laughing) Right.
(audience laughs)
You can only stay for a little while.
Make yourself at home while I look for the annual.
- Thanks.
It's nice and cozy here.
- Thank you.
- Betty, how come you and I haven't
gotten together before tonight?
- Oh, after all, on co-eds, I'd hardly be noticed.
- Ah, among your other virtues, add a becoming modesty.
- We can see better with the light on.
- Oh, but gorgeous.
Why should I look at pictures when I've got the original?
I don't wanna be penalized for holding up the game.
Let's get into a huddleand try a kiss for size.
- Hold it, Jerry.
There's also a penalty for being off-side.
- You mean I'm wasting my time?
- I didn't say that.
I just think maybe you're rushing things.
After all, this is only our first date.
- Oh, I get it.
You're a second or third date girl.
You want me to go through the formality
of a few more evenings of small talk.
- That would be a stepin the right direction.
- Okay, I know when I'mhitting a tough line.
Are you busy tomorrow night?
- No.
- Good. We'll make that number two.
- (giggling) It's a date.
- You're a funny girl.
- In what way?
- Well, you so much as admit you won't mind kissing me,
but you postpone it for awhile, because that satisfies your
puritan conscience.
- I'm not being coy, Jerry.
I'm only trying to be honest with myself.
So maybe we oughta say good night, huh?
- Now, look, Betty.
I'm the one that's being honest.
You're one of the prettiest girls on the campus,
so I want to kiss you.
And I believe you feel the same way about me.
So let's cut the red tape and assume we're
on our third date, and take it from there.
- Now, look, Jerry, no.- Oh, baby.
- [Betty] I don't feel that way.
- Hi!
(audience laughs)
I didn't know you guys were home.
- Where did you come from?
- Kitchen.
(audience laughs)
I'm Bud.
- Excuse me, Jerry Preston, this is my brother.
(audience laughs) (comedic music)
- Glad to meet you. (clears throat)
Oh, don't let me interrupt. Sit down.
(audience laughs)
What's new?
- Not a thing.
(audience laughs)
- Isn't it past your bedtime?
- Oh, I'm not sleepy.
(audience laughs)
- Well, look, it was thoughtful of you to drop in
to say hello, but don't let us keep you.
- Oh, I'm not going anywhere.
Don't mind me, I'll just sit here and look at the annual.
(audience laughs)
- Well, uh.
It's later than I thought.
Shall we adjourn the meeting?
- Oh, yes, it is getting late.
(audience laughs)
(curious music)
- See you again, no doubt.
- Sure, I live here.
(audience laughs)
(knocking)
- [Jim] Come in.
- I've never been so humiliated in all my life!
- Well, what happened?
- (sighs) When Jerrybrought me home tonight,
he came in for a few minutes to look at the annual.
And what does Bud do?
He comes in and flops down like a watchdog,
until Jerry's forced to go home.
Well, since when does my kid brother
have to be my chaperone?
- Well, Betty's real naive.
She doesn't know when a guy's giving her a fast routine.
- You do?
- Well, sure, yeah, I know how these mush artists operate.
And it's not gonna happen to my sister.
- Look, jut because a boy wants to kiss me,
doesn't mean I have to let him.
Father, will you please explain that to this nitwit?
- Well, she's right, Bud.
I'm sure your intentions were good.
But, we've never considered it
necessary to supervise Betty's dates.
Why should you?
- This is the wackiest house!
What are we doing up?
- Holding night court, kitten.
And I move we recess so the judge can get some sleep.
Court's adjourned!
- Aren't you going to do anything to him?
- Yes.
Young man, you are restrained from intimidating
All-Conference football tackles who call on Betty.
And that's a court order.
Good night.
- Good night.
- Good night, children.
- No.- I want you to leave me
alone from now on. - I just try and help
out, and what happens?
- I don't get it.
- You don't have to.
- I still say this is the wackiest house.
(audience laughs)
- Jim?
- Hm?
- Why would Bud do a thing like that?
- Oh.
Bud's at an age where hehas an exaggerated idea
of responsibility for protecting his sister.
- I'm sure Betty could handle a difficult situation,
should one arise.
- I'd like to think that she could.
- Maybe she shouldn'thave invited the boy in
at this time of night.
- Well, she wanted to show him the annual.
- Bud wouldn't barge in just to
help them look at the annual.
- Well. (sighs)
Maybe this Jerry was a little demonstrative.
But, (sighs) Betty's a big girl.
We can't keep her in a glass case.
She didn't seem concerned about him getting out of line.
- (laughs) Oh, we're imagining things.
Just because Bud did a silly thing.
- Sure. (laughs nervously)
Let's get some sleep.
- Good night, dear.
- Good night, honey.
(dramatic music)
- How do I look?
- Oh, you look very lovely, dear.
- Oh, dreamy!
- You mean after Bud'sperformance last night,
Jerry's coming back.
- Don't think I'm losing out with the biggest wheel
on campus just because of a nosy little brother.
(door bell rings)
I can't wait foryou to meet him.
Hello, Jerry.
- Wow!
Just stand there and let me look at you.
I wanna remember this picture.
(laughing)
- Come on in.
I want you to meet my family.
- Looking forward to it.
- Mother, Father, this is Jerry Preston.
- Hello, Jerry.
- How do you do, sir?
- Well, it's nice meeting you, Jerry.
- Delighted, Mrs. Anderson.
Well, the apple doesn'tfall far from the tree.
I'd swear you were sisters.
(audience laughs)
- Oh, this is my little sister, Kathy.
- Hello!
- Kathy, it's easy to see where you get your good looks.
Mr. Anderson, I envy you.
- Oh?
- You're always surrounded by loveliness.
(audience laughs)
Well, glamor gal, shouldwe turn ourselves away?
- I'm ready. Good night, everybody.
- Wonderful meeting you, Mrs. Anderson.
Kathy.
A real pleasure to know you, sir.
- Thank you.
- Good night.
- Good night.
- You won't stay outtoo late, will you dear?
- What do we have, house rules?
(audience laughs)
- Oh, a couple.
Be sure you're home ahead of the milkman,
and don't drive over miles an hour.
(audience laughs)
- [Jerry] Oh, I'll takegood care of her, sir.
- Good night.
- Good night. - Good night.
- What's your snap judgment, dear?
- I'd say Betty better brush up on how to intercept passes.
(audience laughs)
- Angel face, I likeyour parents very much.
- Aren't they wonderful?
- But that brother of yours.
Wait a minute.
I just wanted to make sure Bud isn't along.
(audience laughs)
- Well, he was a littleoverzealous last night,
trying to play big brother.
- Girl Scouts honor he won't come
crawling out of the upholstery?
- (laughing) Scouts honor.
- What am I, poison or something?
Why are you sitting so far away?
- (laughing) Well, I think it's corny for a girl
to practically sit in the driver's seat
when she's with a boy.
(audience laughs)
- You know, I could see you better
if you'd move a little closer.
(audience laughs)
- Um, I think you'd better keep your eyes on the road,
and drive with two hands.
(audience laughs)
- Am I an untouchable or is there a rule
that says you have to sit way over there?
- Well, safety counts a rule number one,
that says always keepboth hands on the wheel.
- Okay. See how cooperative I am?
At least until we get out of heavy traffic.
- After last night, I don't feel we're exactly strangers.
Wasn't last night kinda special to you?
- (laughs) I guess I let you kiss me
on account of all the things you said.
It was wonderful the wayyou talked about my halo
and everything. (audience laughs)
- Well, I didn't say anything that isn't true.
(audience laughs)
Say, angel face, we don't wanna go to a movie, do we?
- What else is there to do?
- Well, first let's get out of this heavy traffic,
and then maybe we'll think of something.
(audience laughs)
(Joyce sighs)
- Jerry, you said wewere going for a drive.
- Okay, we've been, beautiful.
- I don't wanna park here.
You know the kind of reputation Prospect Point has.
- People come up here in the daytime to look at the view.
What's so wrong about seeing it at night?
- (laughs) Look, I don'twanna sound prim, but
well, I wanna make it clear that this place
is out of bounds.
- We have plenty of company.
There are other cars parked here.
(Betty scoffs)
(audience laughs)
- Oh, but I thought you were just gonna turn around
and start back to town.
- Well, I am.
But we can stop a few minutes while I'm turning, can't we?
(audience laughs)
- Well, Bud, we can't park here.
You know what they say about Prospect Point.
- Well, I thought you might like the view.
(audience laughs)
I can't get over your angel face and soft halo.
(audience laughs)
- Jerry, once more, Iask you to take me home.
- Now, Betty, don't be dramatic.
So I want a little kiss.
Is that so terrible?
It can be just as pleasant to you as it is to me.
Or have I suddenly become Mr. Repulsive?
- Well, I won't say Ihaven't been attracted.
But that didn'tinclude Prospect Point.
- After all, we'regoing steady, aren't we?
What's wrong with giving me a kiss?
- Alright.
If you'll promise you'll take me home right after.
- Sure, I promise.
(audience laughs)
- One kiss, and I'll be very docile and take you home.
- I don't believe you.
- Wait a minute!
Come back here, will you?
- No, I won't.
- I'll take care of him, Betty!
- Oh, Bud!
Stop it!
(audience laughs)
- Wait a minute.
- Bud, no, come here! - What's the idea?
Look, I didn't mean any harm.
- Let go of me!
- No, Bud, please, I'm alright.
- Look, I didn't mean any harm.
- Take me home, will ya, Bud?
- Yeah. In my car.
- I'll take you home, Betty.
- No you won't.
You ever touch my sisteragain, I'll clobber ya.
(audience laughs)
Come on, Betty.
- Uh, can we talk for a minute?
- Sure.
- I guess you know how much I appreciate
what you did tonight.
- Oh, that's okay.
I just wish you hadn't'alet yourself in for it.
- Well, I'll admit, he had me charmed.
I was certainly taken in.
- I uh.
I guess you were wondering how I got Joyce to go up there.
- Well, I guess she was taken in with your charm, too.
- Well, I was wrong.
I just didn't realize that until I saw you there.
Joyce didn't wanna goup anymore than you did.
- I'm glad she didn't, Bud.
(phone rings)
- Um, uh.
Mustn't wake mom and dad.
Hello?
- [Jerry] I'd like to speak to Betty please.
- [Bud] Who's calling?
- This is Jerry.
- Well, you've got some nerve,
calling here after treating my sister the way you did.
(light, dramatic music)
- Jim, is anything wrong?
- I don't know.
But I think we better find out.
- Now, look, you can still that big brother act,
because I'm coming over.
- Okay, buster.
I'll be waiting up for ya.
(audience laughs) (dramatic music)
Imagine, that guy coming over here to start something
after what he did up at Prospect Point.
- Now, calm down, young man.
You're hardly in the position to criticize.
You had a girl up there too.
- Well, it was just lucky I was there.
- Well, he's not coming over here to start a fight.
(door bell rings)
Now scram. I'll take care of this.
(light, dramatic music)
- Oh, Mr. Anderson.
Well, I didn't want to disturb you.
I just want to see Betty.
- Well, I'm afraid that isn't possible just now, Jerry.
But, come in.
(Jerry sighs)
- Hello, Mrs. Anderson.
- Jerry.
- Come in and sit down.
- It seems you heard about what happened.
- Yes.
Now we'd like to know why it happened.
Seems to us anexplanation is in order.
And it'll have to be a good one.
- Now, wait a minute, sir.
It was a perfectly harmless evening.
It just happened to (sighs)
turn into anembarrassing situation.
I was trying to get Betty back in the car,
to bring her back home.
I was going to apologizewhen Bud came at me.
- Well, wouldn't youhave done the same thing
if it had been your sister?
- Well.
I can understand Bud doing it.
- Of course we're not excusing his being up there.
- No.
And he'll hear more from us later on that subject.
But, at least
he sees things in truer perspective
since his sister is involved.
- Well, yes, sir.
Well, you know how it is.
A lot of girls expect guys to make passes at them,
or they're insulted.
- Unless I've misjudged my daughter,
I'm sure she didn't expect it.
- No, sir.
We figure it's okay to try something with a girl.
It's up to her to draw the line.
- Well, when she does,
don't you think it should be respected?
- Yes, I do.
I made a terrible mistake. (sighs)
I was just conceited enough to think that
Betty would go along with me, rather than lose me.
When I finally got it through my thick head
that she wouldn't, (sighs)
something happened to me.
Betty wasn't just another necking date.
She became pretty special.
(light, dramatic music)
And I don't want to lose her friendship.
That's why I had to come back
to try to set things straight.
It hasn't been easy, sir.
- I know it took courage for you to
come over here tonight, Jerry.
- Well, when she understands,
do you think she might go out with me again?
If it's alright with you.
- Well.
Any objections we might've had
seem to lack strength now, since our son was there too.
So when the smoke dies down,
maybe you better try explaining things to Betty.
Don't you agree, Margaret?
- Yes.
Well, at least I think Jerry's entitled to a hearing.
- Then you think she'll see me?
- I'm not sure.
- Look.
If Betty can only be made to realize
that this means more to me than
anything else.
Will you please tell her that?
- Well.
For whatever it's worth, I'll suggest
that she give it her consideration.
- Thank you, sir.
Good night, Mrs. Anderson.
- Good night, Jerry.
- Good night, sir.
- Good night, Jerry.
(upbeat music)
- Oh, here's the earring.
I thought it dropped off in your car,
so I came right over.
(car door slams)
(Joyce sighs)
- In all the excitement last night,
I didn't get a chance to tell ya, but
well I apologize for taking you up to Prospect Point.
- Oh.
Well, I'm glad that you feel the way I do about it, Bud.
But, boy, you sure helped Betty out of a jam
with that awful Jerry.
- Oh, no, he's not such a bad guy.
- I'm here, Reginald, darling!
(audience laughs)
"I'm here, Reginald,darling," she whispered.
He sighed, "I've waited five years to hold heaven
"in my arms," he said.
- Give me that!
Beat it!
- Okay!
What a grouch.
(audience laughs)
- (laughs) I've got the book at home.
It's the greatest.
- Well, I guess you knowwhere I got my line.
- (sighs) Just thesame, it was thrilling.
When you kissed me, I just closed my eyes
and imagined you were Reginald.
(audience laughs)
(audience applauds)
(upbeat music)
- [Narrator] Robert Young,
