at the end of Season .

These jackasses showed up.

They helped the Larson family
get their home back

by taking out some of Teddy's henchmen.

We just saw the initial sparks
of shared purpose

that Dwight and Sherry suddenly realize,

that this might be a way for them

to mend both of their shared wounds.

I haven't seen that side
of you in a long time.

Maybe we should have been doing
more of that the whole time.

GOLDBERG: We knew that's how
we wanted to reintroduce them

this season, as these sort
of benevolent outlaws.

Their legend has grown to the point

where people are starting
to take notice,

and we'll see in this episode

that among those people
who have heard about them

is none other than Victor Strand.

I really did not want to
k*ll anybody today.

The k*ll was clean.

The code is really important
to both Dwight and Sherry.

It really defines
who the Dark Horses are

and who they want to be,
so that they're always

essentially doing bad to do good.

Briga, they're back.

I think the scenes
with the Larson family

establish a connection

that Dwight and Sherry have with Briga.

Dwight in particular has
this closeness with Briga,

which we come to understand
has a lot of layers for Dwight

because he's wrestling with the idea

that he wants a family of his own

and he doesn't know how to
communicate that to Sherry.

The other thing that we learned is,

the Larsons are looking for
something more.

We're gonna find Padre.

We don't even know what it is.

Dwight and Sherry are in a position

where they really want
to believe in Padre,

but they don't have
a whole lot to go on,

other than some sounds on
the radio and a lot of hope.

You know, there's still a long
road to go to finding it,

if it even exists.

The Dark Horses, per your request.

Ha! [LAUGHS]

Strand?

GOLDBERG: It's a real
surprise for Strand

to see that the heroes
that are the Dark Horses

are, in fact, people
that Strand already knows.

There are a couple of aspects to
the Polaroids on the wall.

Victor says that he wants
to give his denizens closure

in case they're looking for
people on the outside.

That's one aspect of it

that I think Dwight and Sherry
don't entirely buy.

And then, of course, we see
as this episode goes on

that there's an entirely
different function to it,

which is Strand literally hiring Eli

to... to k*ll the Larsons and
bring back Polaroids as proof.

We lived in a place like this before.

And that didn't turn out so hot.

And the fact that you're even
calling this a sanctuary

makes me pretty damn sure
that it's anything but.

There's just a lot of mistrust
that plays on

Dwight's own trauma from his
past, what happened with Negan,

and he's rightfully suspicious
of Strand's motives.

There's also a wall of the dead outside.

There is Strand looking
to hunt down someone

who... who escaped the Tower

and saying that he has
her best interests at heart.

We know where Mickey's holed herself up.

But my people have been
unable to recover her.

People come back bruised and tattered...

if they come back at all.

And given your reputation
as the Dark Horses,

I figured maybe you can find
success where we have failed.

Sounds like she doesn't
want to be recovered.

Set. And... action, Pete.

So Andrew and I had a great
experience working with Aisha

in the episode she directed in Season .

And we knew that she was
a brilliant mind for genre,

she loved "The Walking Dead" universe.

When we were coming up
with this role of Mickey,

we said to ourselves the entire
time, "Wouldn't it be amazing

if we could get Aisha
to play this role?"

She brought such life
to Mickey, such fun.

Are you sure we don't know each other?

Look, champ, no offense,

but I'd remember a face
like that, alright?

One of my favorite moments
in this episode

is the moment when we see
Dwight put the pieces together

and realize he does
recognize this woman.

And you just see him light up.

He's meeting a celebrity.

You're The Bride.

[LAUGHS]

You were amazing!

Something that we don't see a lot

in "The Walking Dead" universe.

Dwight was essentially meeting
one of his childhood heroes.

Seeing what Strand does to the Larsons

speaks volumes about
what Strand is willing to do

to get what he wants.

[GROWLING]

This harkens back to the Strand

that we saw throw Will
off the roof in .

Aaahhh!

This Victor Strand is not above doing

some very morally gray actions
to preserve what he's built

and to hold on to who he's become.

- [g*n COCKS]

I think it's the moment when Dwight

sees those Polaroids with Eli

and he realizes that taking
any kind of deal with Strand

is tantamount to throwing in
with Negan at the Sanctuary.

- [GROANS]
- Strand put you up to this, didn't he?

It is just a new iteration of that,

and he will not let himself
go there again.

[WALKERS GROWLING]

Who are you calling?!

- Strand!
- Okay, don't do it!

Even when everything in the universe,

the walkers that are surrounding
the wrestling ring,

Cliff being dead,
where the easiest choice

would be just to pick up
that walkie and call Strand,

Dwight is absolutely not
gonna let that happen.

I'd rather die fighting with you
than live hiding with him.

We were very excited that Lennie

agreed to direct another episode for us

and in particular this one
because there's so much

to... to dig into from
a performance level.

A great showcase episode
for Dwight and Sherry,

but also for Aisha Tyler.

Lennie brought fun to it
with the wrestling component.

This sequence was probably
the most number

of fun conversations we had,
but, you know,

there were certain things that we knew

we wanted to get in there.

We need a walker's head
bashed into a turnbuckle.

We need the steel chair.
We need the piledriver.

We knew we wanted it to culminate

with the Till Death Do Us Part.

Dwight gets to work
in tandem with Mickey

to perform Till Death Do Us Part,

the ultimate finishing move
of Dearly Beloved,

which is just this... this
beautiful moment of Dwight

getting to kind of live
a childhood fantasy.

[GROWLING]

Cliff wrote Mickey this letter

that said, "Find someone
to stand in your corner",

and Dwight and Sherry
become those people to Mickey.

And the three of them
are gonna kind of continue

to take on the world together,

and they're gonna continue
to live by this code.

And then, of course,
the... the karmic reward

for that for the three of them is,

they end up getting
one step closer to Padre

at the end of the episode,
even if it's in a way

that I don't think any
of them anticipated.
