05x10 - If They're Screwing the Helmet to My Head, It Can't Be Good!

Phil: Previously on "The Amazing Race"...

teams left a desert oasis in the United Arab Emirates

and raced over , miles

to the crowded streets of Calcutta, India.

At the roadblock, several teams struggled making bricks.

I'm packing it.

Phil: Eventually, Brandon and Nicole abandoned the brickyard

and headed for the fast forward.

Come on, babe, we're going after the fast forward.

Phil: But when they realized what the task would require...

Both of your heads must be shaved.

Phil: They refused to go through with it

and had to return to the roadblock.

I'm such an idiot.

Now we have to go all the way back.

Phil: Front-runner teams Colin and Christie

and Chip and Kim relied on the help of locals to finish the detour.

Push, push, push!

Phil: Another strong finish by Colin and Christie

only strengthened Chip and Kim's resolve in their new strategy.

Chip and I want Colin and Christie to self-destruct.

Phil: In the end, Brandon and Nicole couldn't recover

from their fast forward decision.

You're the last team to arrive.

But were thrilled upon being spared elimination

even at a high price.

What?

Phil: Hand over all the money in your pockets.

Can you believe that?

We were hopeless. We thought it was over.

Phil: teams remain.

Who will be eliminated next?

Phil: This is Calcutta, India; once a small fishing village,

it's now one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

And in the heart of the city, Victoria Memorial,

an -year-old monument built as a tribute

to England's Queen Victoria.

This was the ninth pit stop in a race around the world.

Teams arrived here at the end of the last leg

for a mandatory rest period that allows them

to eat, sleep, and mingle with the other teams.

What?

Shut up.

Phil: Brandon and Nicole, who arrived last,

were not eliminated because this pit stop

was the third of predetermined non-elimination spots,

but they were stripped of all money they had accumulated

since the start of the race,

and they will not receive any money at all for the coming leg.

Nicole: During this pit stop,

Brandon and I had to beg for money.

We literally have no money.

Brandon: Nicki and I aren't comfortable

with asking people for money,

but you've got to do what you've got to do.

Take whatever you would want to give us if you can.

We have absolutely no money.

Naturally, I feel a little anxious.

We don't know what to do.

Phil: Colin and Christie,

who were the first to arrive at : P.M.,

will depart at : A.M.

Ha ha ha.

Yes!

"Fly to Auckland, New Zealand."

Phil: Teams must now travel nearly , miles

to Auckland, New Zealand.

When they land, they will have to drive themselves

an additional miles to the town of Rotorua,

and find the Rotorua Museum, where they will get their next clue.

To get to New Zealand, teams must first

go to this nearby travel agency to book their flight

because local laws do not allow travelers

to book international flights out of India from the airport.

We're on our way to New Zealand, baby.

Yeah!

As much as I loved India,

it was time to move on.

Christie: It's obviously a great morale boost to come in first,

but Colin and I need to work on being OK

when things are not going perfectly.

If we can learn to do that,

we'll be a lot more successful.

Yeah!

New Zealand.

Chip: Kim and I are really excited

about being at the top of the pack.

Kim: The only thing is, we know that we still

have to get a little smarter,

because everybody's going to be playing hard.

You guys, go to the travel agency right now.

-Which one?-Look on the paper.

OK, thanks.

Chip: Colin and Christie are our number-one competitors.

Kim and I are going to be nice to a point

but we know we have to batten down the hatches

and play our game alone.

We're on a race around the world.

We have to get by on food, taxicabs to and from the airport.

His good looks.

One for you and one for you.

Thank you.

Good luck.

It's a great start.

Right here, right here, right here.

Thank you.

We need to buy tickets to Auckland, New Zealand.

To Bangkok.

What about from Bangkok to Auckland?

This is the best?

We need to get reservations on this flight.

Check other airlines, then.

We want to get tickets for Indian Airlines to Bangkok.

Once we get to the airport in Calcutta,

we're going to try to make arrangements

to get from Bangkok to Auckland.

So we're off to the airport.

To the airport.

We just have to get on that Singapore flight somehow, some way.

We're going to New Zealand.

Yes! Let's go!

Linda: Karen and my goal for this leg of the race

is to stay in the top .

It's hard when you're at the bottom

and you're always crawling out.

We're not used to asking for money.

So, we're like--

-It's really hard.-Yeah.

It's really hard to do.

It's a challenge.

It takes me out of my comfort zone.

Yes. Definitely.

And so you guys are so sweet.

Brandon: We had a little bit of success begging people for money.

Nicole: Hopefully, we still have a shot.

This is it, right here.

At the light, stop.

We need to make travel arrangements, please,

to New Zealand!

Please.

Indian Airlines?

Now we need tickets from Bangkok to New Zealand.

The other teams-- you booked their tickets to New Zealand?

You did. They just left?

Then that's fine.

Thank you so much for all your help.

-You got the tickets?-Yeah.

"Fly to Auckland, New Zealand."

Oh.

Let's go.

Karli: Twins do not always get along.

Kami and I are so much alike,

when one thing bothers her, it bothers me, too.

To finish in the top we need to stay calm

and get along with one another.

-International.-Yes, this is it.

Can we book tickets for the Indian Airlines?

Yes.

Is there a way to book tickets from Bangkok to New Zealand?

Did the teams that came in before get tickets?

Is there any way to secure those Qantas tickets for us?

Karli: Kami and I have tickets on Qantas.

This isn't the fastest way,

but once we get to the airport,

we can see if maybe we can do a little talking.

Calcutta International.

" teams have $ for this leg of the race,

one team has zero for this leg of the race."

We're in good shape.

Brandon: Nicki and I almost being eliminated

has taught us never to give up.

But to catch up we need to support each other

and leave it in the Lord's hands.

It looks like they're close.

We need tickets.

Can we book that?

Is there any way you can book us from Bangkok to Auckland?

Our flight leaves at :.

OK, thank you.

We have to go fast to the airport, OK?

We're going to be on the same flight with everybody else.

Right now, booking tickets from Bangkok to New Zealand

will be a strategic point in the race for all the teams.

We check in over here.

We need to check in now.

Let's go.

Colin: Everyone else went to go check in

on our Indian Airlines flight.

Christie and I and Chip and Kim walked straight to the office

so that we could try to get the first tickets on the Singapore flight.

We need to get tickets to Auckland.

Will you be able to take a look for us next?

Let's go to the ticket counter.

Kim: Chip and I had to go find

another Singapore Airlines ticket agent to get that flight.

Are there a lot available?

That's the earliest, the :, right?

We need to get in there before that team.

We have to get there.

It is so important.

This is real critical for us.

We definitely have all of our tickets going to Auckland?

Sounds good.

Those are the last tickets

that they just purchased?

OK, we have reservations on the Singapore Airlines.

-That's great. -Yes.

Chip, y'all are on the same flight--

Kim: Colin and Christie, they beat us to the punch.

From this point forward,

Chip and I have to be more aggressive.

Colin: We're the only people

that are on the Singapore Airlines flight,

getting us in at : A.M.

Let's see if we can get tickets.

Karli: Kami and I don't want to stand in line

behind all the other teams.

We have a flight from Bangkok to New Zealand on Qantas

that would arrive at :,

however, we're going to see if we can find an earlier flight.

We'll book that one.

Chip: Kim and I are booking a flight

to Auckland on New Zealand Airlines

that would put us minutes later

than that doggone Colin and Christie.

Hey.

Hey, guys.

How you doing, man?

What time does this flight arrive in to New Zealand?

:, baby.

You know it all, don't you?

:?

Oh, thank you. Thank you.

You stayed there a few years, didn't you?

Did it stick out because you were

in pre-K for or years?

years or years?

I'm gonna backhand you, boy.

You won't model ever again in this town.

We need tickets to New Zealand.

Try different routes.

because we're always last,

and we can't get a break here.

Hello?

Can you connect me to the reservation desk?

Hello?

I think I'm on hold.

OK, that's good. That's what I want.

We got our tickets.

I think we're the only ones taking this flight

that arrives at :, so anything could happen.

It's just ringing and ringing.

I can't get hold.

We need better tickets.

We're going to try really hard

when we get to Bangkok.

Bangkok, here we come.

Linda: All the teams are on a flight together

from Calcutta to Bangkok.

It's anybody's game now.

Linda: Our flight arrives at : in Auckland.

Hopefully we can get there the same time as everyone else.

Phil: Linda and Karen are traveling to Auckland

via a /-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur.

We need to go to Singapore Airlines.

Karli: Right now, we're going to land in New Zealand at :.

We're going to try to get on a earlier flight.

We should have reservations.

I have reservations, I called, and I confirmed.

Ma'am, I don't understand why this is so hard.

Looks like Christie and I might be

the only team on this flight.

Phil: Colin and Christie are traveling to Auckland via Singapore.

Chip: Kim and I and Brandon and Nicki

are in the midst of boarding the British Airways flight

from Bangkok to Sydney,

and then we're going to Auckland.

Everyone else is already on.

We've got to hurry.

I am trying to get to Sydney as soon as possible.

We already have these tickets.

We just need to see if we can trade these in

for a sooner flight.

Please, please, please.

We only have like a few minutes to get on this flight

with Brandon and Nicole and Chip and Kim.

I totally hate airports.

We've got to make that flight.

It's, like, leaving.

This is not good.

I'm so stressed out right now.

We will do anything to make this flight.

I have to get on there. I have to make it.

Karli: Kami and I need to get tickets,

or we will be dead last.

Is this going to work?

Thank you so much.

Come on. We've got to hurry.

Kim: We are hoping the twins don't get on the flight,

because we need the extra buffer.

The twins are just too doggone fast.

Final call.

Karli: We're tired but we're extremely excited.

I think the moms are behind us,

so we're not in last place.

This is going to keep us in the game.

Phil: Brandon and Nicole, Chip and Kim,

and Kami and Karli are traveling together

from Bangkok to Sydney, Australia.

While Brandon and Nicole and Chip and Kim are booked

on an immediate connection to Auckland on Air New Zealand,

Kami and Karli will transfer to a Qantas flight

scheduled to arrive minutes later.

New Zealand. I can move here.

Oh, yes.

You've got to help me out with this navigation.

According to this map, Route One, that will take us to Rotorua.

We've got to hurry.

They should literally be leaving right behind us.

I see them.

We have to go to Rotorua.

Do you want me to drive?

I'll drive.

Oh, there it is. Route One.

We're on our way.

We're supposed to be going south on One.

What I just need you to do is look at a map.

I don't see the One.

We need to get south.

On One?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's right there.

There is only one car left.

We know we're bringing up the rear.

You know where to go?

We're looking for southern Route One.

Just hope we can make up time.

Ask where Rotorua is.

Do any of you know where the One highway is?

Do you see a motorway or highway number?

I can't find it on the map.

Here we go.

We're ripping now, baby, we're ripping now.

We're on Highway One trying to catch up.

Surprised we haven't got lost yet.

Excuse me, would you tell me

how to get to the One highway south?

I think we should ask for directions.

Highway One. OK.

Thank you very much.

The other motorway.

There it is.

We are pathetic.

We have to look for the museum of art and history.

What's the place we're looking for?

The museum.

It's in here.

Yield ahead. Right there, right there.

Phil: There is only one yield on each leg of the race.

The team that uses it may force another team that's behind them

to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time

even as other teams may pass them.

However, teams can exercise their yield power only once

during the course of the race,

so they need to decide when it's in their best interest to use it.

Any team that's been forced to yield

must turn this hourglass upside down

and wait for the sand to run out before they can continue on.

We choose not to use the yield.

We're not going to yield someone to try to screw them over.

Detour, "clean or dirty."

Phil: A detour is a choice between two tasks

each with its own pros and cons.

In this detour, teams must choose

how they want to end up when it's all over,

clean or dirty.

In clean, teams must drive miles to Okere Falls

and do a New Zealand adventure sport called sledging.

In this task, with the help of two river guides,

they must ride down a one-mile whitewater river course

with only a small board called a sledge for protection.

Sledging down the turbulent river will be scary.

But teams who can muster their guts can be fast.

In dirty, teams must drive approximately miles

to a place called Hell's Gate

and search for clues in a large mud pool.

There is nothing scary about the task,

but searching the hot mud bubbling up

from the ground will be unpleasant

and could take a long time.

Whitewater raft, right?

Colin: It's going to take longer to search this big puddle of mud.

I think whitewater sledging is something that's very fun.

Colin, are you going the right way?

Yes. If you...

I swear to God.

We've got the going to the right and going to the left.

Yeah. We're going the wrong way.

Let me see the map. Quick.

I'm stopped. I have to look at it.

Can I see the map real quick, please?

Right here.

We need to turn around and go back the other way.

Are you the least bit excited about whitewater sledging?

I'm frustrated because you won't listen to me

when I tell you how to go on a map,

and that's called trusting me,

and you're not doing it.

I apologize. I'm sorry.

I should have just turned around.

Christie: I definitely feel like mine and Colin's

relationship is growing.

The biggest frustration is when one or the other

is not willing to take the higher road

and we've definitely gotten better.

I stand corrected. I'm wrong.

You're right.

Here is the yield.

Are we yielding?

We're not gonna yield.

Brandon: We did not use the yield today.

Nicki and I might yield down the road

when it's neck and neck.

OK.

Ooh. What do you think's gonna be quicker?

I don't know, but let's start walking.

Are you feeling lucky?

Why? Because of the mud?

The whitewater thing sounds fun.

The whitewater is going to be intimidating.

Brandon: It's probably a little of my protective father rubbing off on me.

Sledging didn't sound all that safe,

and all the rocks and Nicki banging her head.

What do you think?

Are we going to agree to do the mud?

Yeah, that's fine.

Should I go into this thing?

I think so.

Yield, right there.

Come on.

We've got to get going. We're late.

We're the last ones here.

We choose not to yield at this time.

Yeah, because we're last.

Come on. Run, hurry.

Come on, let's go.

I can tell in your voice that you don't think we can do it.

I've never heard of sledging, have you?

No.

How do you know you can do it?

I can do it.

There is going to be a yield box before our next clue.

I think we might get yielded.

I think Chip and Kim are ahead of us.

Yeah, that's Chip.

Flag's in front of you.

Oh, my God.

Are you kidding me?

I'm excited.

Oh, my God, this is so cool.

OK. Are we ready?

I'm ready.

OK. Look for the race flags.

Here it is.

There is our pool right there.

Just find the clue?

Get in it.

Are you sure it's just mud?

Gross.

My feet are stuck.

This is disgusting.

Whoa.

This is kind of cool.

Christie: When we first get in,

we're just kind of riding the rapids

and it didn't seem hard at all.

I'm thinking this is really fun.

We have to find it fast.

Christie: There is this one last waterfall

and the instructor pulls us off to the side,

and says do we know what we're getting ourselves into.

, , .

We're like-- hands and knees, aren't you?

I mean, golly, Brandon, how unlucky are we.

Christie: I'm scared but I'm trying not to think about it too much,

so that I won't chicken out.

Go, baby, you can do it.

You got it, baby.

All right, Christie!

Christie: As the race has progressed,

I've realized that I have capabilities that I never knew I had.

Colin: Christie is constantly impressing me on this race.

I mean, she is constantly doing things that I'm like amazed.

"Find Matapara Farms."

Phil: Teams must now drive themselves nearly miles

to Matapara Farms to receive their next clue.

You're awesome, baby.

That was fun.

That was a nice adrenaline rush.

Yeah.

I feel like high on life right now.

Yeah, that woke us up.

Oh, my God. Go!

OK, run, Kim, you've got to run.

Now they're gonna yield us. Damn it!

Don't do it.

We choose to yield the...

never will we yield you because we love you.

We're not going to yield to anybody.

But you got to give me a hug.

Karli: By not using the yield, Chip redeemed himself.

Everything that's happened in the past is water under the bridge.

Chip: I didn't yield to the twins

because I think the moms are way behind us.

When I saw that there were only two cards left in the box,

we knew the moms are ahead of us.

Clean or dirty.

OK. Clean or dirty.

I think looking for that mud'll just take too damn long.

We're going to do Okere Falls.

I thought the moms were behind us.

I would have yielded the twins. We needed that.

Chip: With the moms already gone, I'm going crazy.

It completely snatched the rug from beneath me.

That was a huge, huge, huge mistake.

What's it called? Okere Falls?

Yeah, Okere Falls.

Where are we going?

To Hell's Gate.

Oh, my God.

That might have been my biggest mistake in life,

not yielding because I thought the moms were behind us.

Okere Falls.

There's the flag.

I see it, I see it.

No one's here.

They've come and gone.

And we're gonna hop in the water--

You have to tell me how hard this is.

It's difficult.

Do you want to do the other one?

I don't know.

What do you think, Linda? We're here.

I don't know. It's up to you.

Are you making me--

am I going to drowned?

They're screwing the helmet to my head.

It can't be good.

Do you think we're doing it right?

How else are we supposed to do it?

How long have we been here?

Too long.

We should have done the whitewater thing.

This could take forever.

Linda: This was pretty tough, like I had expected.

Then I thought this is going to be fun.

Karen: I was working so hard, I was out of breath.

I'm thinking there is no way

I'm going to make it down this river.

Is she OK?

Come on, Karen! You can do it!

Your kids are going to be so proud of you!

"Find the Matapara Farms."

Little did we know we'd be going down a waterfall.

The highest you can go on a sledge, we did it.

It was so much fun.

Why do we pick the hard things?

Oh, man.

Sometimes I feel like I get one, but it's the mud.

This just sucks.

There it is, right there.

Matapara Farms.

Turn in here.

Road block.

"Who's ready for a wild ride?"

A roadblock is a task that only one person may perform.

In this roadblock that person has to work with an unusual device

that New Zealanders use for cheap thrills,

the zorb.

The person using the roadblock will have to inflate one zorb,

which is a giant plastic ball.

Once they've inflated the zorb, they will have to get in

and roll down this huge hill while bouncing inside.

Water protects them from scraping themselves on the plastic.

At the bottom of the hill, like a hamster in a wheel,

team members will have to walk the ball across the finish line,

join their partner, and run to this place,

the pit stop for this leg of the race.

All righty. You ready?

Oh, my God. That looks fun.

Christie: I got the biggest kick out of Colin.

He does all of these extreme sports

to get his high off of life.

It actually reminded me why I love him.

Yahoo!

I could hear him yelling from over here.

[Yelling]

Colin.

Colin: You're just rolling down this hill going so fast around

that it's like this moving water slide.

It just is crazy.

This is the hard part, baby.

Making it to the finish line.

Looks like a little hamster.

That was so awesome.

Ha ha ha!

Whoo!

Up here?

Right up here.

Welcome to Rotorua, New Zealand.

Colin and Christie, you're team number one.

Whoo!

All right.

And I've got some good news for you.

As the winners of this tenth leg of the race,

you've won a vacation to romantic Europe

compliments of American Airlines website AA.com,

-which you can enjoy after the race. -Awesome.

Colin: I would say the race has strengthened

Christie and I's relationship.

We may bicker back and forth,

but we're learning to give in more

and not be so strong-headed.

I would never be with anybody else in the world.

Here it is, Karen.

That's it. Matapara Farms.

Ready?

You've got to do it.

Come on. You can do it.

I'm a little nervous.

I don't know if I can get hurt in this big ball.

Holy cow, this is a steep hill.

OK. Here we go.

Go, Karen.

Go, Karen!

Oh, my God.

That looks so fun!

Go, Karen!

You did it!

Whoo!

Hurry. Come here. Come here.

Come on, come on.

Up the hill to the top.

Linda and Karen,

you're team number two.

We did it right this time.

Oh, my gosh.

Karen and I are so excited we're second.

It's the highest we've ever finished.

We're doing pretty good for moms.

Karen: Linda and I never give up,

and that's what's kept us in this race.

We're number two, oh, my gosh.

Nobody's gonna believe this.

I just want to find this.

It's so frustrating.

Okere Falls on Trout Pool Road.

I hope we're still in it,

I hope we're still in it.

We're not going to give up

because we know that this race is unpredictable.

Hopefully everyone else is having as much bad luck as we are.

This is just crazy.

Oh, my gosh.

I'm getting really frustrated.

Getting really tired.

Brandon: At this point we realize

that we made a horrendous mistake.

Come on.

I'm getting discouraged.

Christie: We're looking for the clue in the mud.

Bottom line, we just couldn't find it.

Come on.

Dang.

Brandon: I'm having to stop myself and say,

"Brandon, you're not in control,

the Lord's got control of our lives."

Want to stop and pray?

Lord, help us find this, please.

Lord, help us find this clue.

I believe you, King.

Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Lord, I believe.

Can you lead me right to it?

Found it.

Ah, thank God, literally.

Let's get out of here.

Thank you, Lord.

Rinse off the back of my legs.

"Find the Matapara Farms."

We're going to Hell's Gate.

Over there.

This is the wrong way.

Let's go.

The twins may very well

just stick their hands in one time and find it.

That's why we've got to hurry up and get to this farm.

We've got to find it quickly.

Will it be obvious, do you think?

Yeah.

Got to put a move on.

Why do I feel like we're making this too hard?

Because we make everything too hard.

I have never before been whitewater rafting.

I'm ready for the experience, though.

Oh, that's it.

Oh, you're so good, Brandon.

"Who's ready for a wild ride?"

OK.

Pump up a zorb?

Babe, I hate this stuff.

Yeah, but I want a million dollars.

That was so funny.

Walk it!

Come on, come on.

I hate hills.

Brandon and Nicole...

you're team number .

That's cool.

All right.

I wonder if Chip and Kim did this.

Oh, Kim would not get in here.

Oh, my God.

I'm thinking over here feels lucky,

and I'm gonna try it.

Keep digging. You can't give up.

Whoa.

I think I found something.

Whoo!

Awesome.

I'm so proud of you, baby.

"Find the Matapara Farms."

Matapara Farms.

Come on, baby.

I don't know how many miles it is.

Just stay on it, we'll find it.

I'm very worried that Karli and I are in last place.

I'm thinking we're in last right now.

We're almost there.

We're very close.

It's a roadblock.

You're going to do it, right?

You're going to do it regardless.

"Who is ready for a wild ride?"

You are.

Oh, my God.

Oh, my God.

Oh, my God.

Come on, baby, come on.

Baby, you got it. Come on!

Whoo!

No, you've got to go.

There you go. You made it.

Come on.

Chip and Kim,

you're team number .

Oh, oh.

Oh!

Thank God.

Oh.

You decided not to use the yield.

I opted to goof around, being a jokester.

So what's the moral of the story?

Use the yield.

Got to do it, come on.

Strength.

Whoo!

Kami and Karli.

Yes?

You're the last team to arrive.

We know.

Sorry to tell you,

you have both been eliminated from the race.

We know.

Kami and my relationship could be better.

We're so much alike that it's hard to--

Deal with ourselves times two.

Yeah.

But because of this race,

I think that we've come a long way.

Kami: It only makes sense

that Karli and I are doing something like this together.

We know each other so well,

and we're going to continue being together

in different races of our life.

We're sisters. We love each other.

Phil: Stay tuned for scenes from our next episode.

Phil: On the next episode of "The Amazing Race"...

Chip confronts his fear of heights.

Oh, God, oh, God.

Oh, God.

Phil: Colin and Christie have a meltdown in Manila.
