Hi there!

It is so good to see you,

and I was wondering
when you were going to get here!

Come on in!

Today…
[sniffing]

What's that smell?

[sniffing]

It smells like berries.

[sniffing]

Hm?

[sniffing]

Huh! It's you!

[sniffing]

Oooo. Tell me. Did you just have
some berries on your cereal?

Because you smell like berries!

[sniffing]

Aaaah!

Or maybe you smell this good
all the time! [laughter]

Well, come on.

Today is a very exciting
day at the Big Blue House.

I'll tell you why.

Today is The Annual Woodland
Valley Storytelling Festival!

Everybody comes once
a year to tell stories,

and they're doing it today,

right here in the Big Blue House!

Isn't that exciting?

Do you like to tell stories?

With Ojo and Treelo,
and Pip and Pop, and…

TUTTER: Bear! Bear!

Tutter!
Speaking of the little mouse…

I wonder what he's up to?
Let's go find out.

Bear! Bear! Over here!

Yes, Tutter.
What can I do for you?

I'll tell you, Bear, I shall tell you!

Okay, well…

I've been working on my story

for the big Storytelling Festival today…

That's great, Tutter!

Yeah, yeah, yeah,
but I was wondering,

could I try it out on you first?

I would love to hear your story.

[laughing] Okay.

[clearing throat]

Once upon a time, there was a mouse.

The end.

Um…

Huh?

So, so what do you think, Bear?

Oh… Well… well, Tutter, it's
a very good story. Very good.

It's just a little…
shorter than I expected.

But… it has a great
beginning, right, Bear?

You know "Once upon a time."

-Right.
-Oh! Now, that's a beginning!

I just love it when
stories start that way.

It never fails!

[laughing]

Yes, Tutter,
it is a very good beginning.

Yeah, yeah.
And it has an end too, right?

"The end!"

You've got a very good beginning.

Hm mm.

And a very good ending.

You just need to work on…

the middle.

The middle?

The middle!

Of course, Bear!

What was I thinking?

Silly me! No middle!
[laughter]

-Oh, gee. But, Bear?
-Yes?

What's a middle?

The middle…

Well, the middle is the part of the story

where we learn more about the mouse.

Like, for instance,

maybe the mouse
was looking for some cheese.

But…

But… but… but…
Ha!

But all the cheese had disappeared!

Good, Tutter. Very good!

Yeah, now let's see.

Once upon a time,

there was a mouse who loved cheese,

but when he went to eat some,

all the cheese had disappeared!

[laughing]

Hey, this story is really
getting good now, Bear.

It's really getting good.

-That's great, Tutter.
-Let's see, let's see…

Gee, you know what?
I've gotta go, Bear!

I've got to work on my story.

I can't wait to figure out
what happens next!

Me too!

-TUTTER: Bye, Bear!
-See you later.

Well, come on. We've got a lot
to do before our guests arrive!

It sure is fun making up stories.

Hey!

Stories.

Stories.

Stories are great!

And there are so many
different ways to enjoy them.

Like, for example…

you could… read a story.

Or you could dance a story,
like in a ballet!

[ballet music playing]

You could even draw a story!
Like in a comic book!

Or… Hey, just listen to one!

And it all starts with…

♪ Once upon a time ♪

♪ That's the way the story goes ♪

♪ Where it's gonna end up ♪

♪ No one knows
Till they get there ♪

♪ Once upon a time ♪

♪ It starts right there and grows ♪

♪ From the opening line
until the close ♪

♪ It all begins way back when
When somethin' happens first ♪

♪ Then somethin'
happens after that ♪

♪ For better or for worse ♪

♪ Can you guess
what's comin' after this? ♪

♪ It's a part
that you won't want to miss ♪

♪ I'll tell you soon if you insist ♪

♪ Once upon a time ♪

♪ That's the way the story goes ♪

♪ Now, where it's gonna end up
no one knows ♪

♪ Things keep happenin'
more and more ♪

♪ How exciting can it get? ♪

One is The Giving Tree.

That's the best story.

I read stories to my little brother.

Sometimes I read
him scary stories.

I like stories about princesses.

I read about five
of them each night.

There we go.

Well, you certainly
know a lot of good stories!

Well, I better get
these refreshments

into the living room
before everyone gets here.

-DOC HOGG: Hello!
-Hmm?

Hello!

Who could that be?
Nobody's supposed to be here yet.

Why, hello there, Bear!

Doc Hogg! You're here!

-I mean, you're kind of…
-I'm kind of early, Bear,

kind of early, I know, I know,

but I was just so
excited about my story.

I've got to tell you. I've come
up with my best story ever!

The story of my life!

-The story of your life?
-Hm mmm

Well, I'm sure that's a very…

Very interesting? Very exciting?

Okay.

Yes indeed, Bear. It's the story
of a hog in this big ol' world,

who grew up in the mud,

with barely a corn cob to gnaw on.

Well, Doc. I'm sure that's
true,

but I'd rather wait
until everyone else is here,

-so that…
-So you don't ruin the ending.

I got you! I got you, Bear.
Smart cookie.

So, why don't you just go
into the living room

-and make yourself comfortable.
-Certainly. I'll do that.

I'll just take these
snacks and head on in.

But… Doc, wait!
I'm saving those for later.

What a comfortable armchair, Bear.

I never realized it was so comfortable.

Well, thanks, Doc.

Gee, I just realized.
I'm gonna need more chairs.

I better get them. Be right back.

All right.
Oh, I better practice my story.

Once upon a… No, what is it?

It was a dark and stormy…
No…

I think there are some
folding chairs up in the attic.

-OJO: Um, Bear!
-TREELO: Bear!

-TREELO: Bear!
-Oh!

-Hey, Ojo. Hey, Treelo.
-Hi, Bear.

-Hi, Bear!
-What's up?

Well, we need your help!

We really don't know what to do
for the Storytelling Festival.

Yeah, Treelo not know
what to do with the story, Bear.

Yeah, Bear.
Can you maybe help us?

-Yeah, help, please.
-Well, sure.

Come on.

Well, Bear, we couldn't
come up with a story,

so we've just been
drawing some pictures.

Yeah. Pictures, Bear. No story.

Well, why don't you show me
what you've drawn.

Okay.

Well, this is a picture
of two bunny rabbits.

Rabbit friends, Bear!

Yeah, yeah, Bear. They're very,
very, very good friends.

-Nice drawing!
-And this one…

Yeah, this is a picture of the
rabbits and their rocket ship.

Yeah! Grrr. Rocket ship!
[laughter]

Yeah, I think that it landed
in their backyard.

Wow!

-But, Bear?
-Yes?

These just pictures.

-We need a story!
-Yeah.

Well, I don't know, but these
are really interesting pictures.

They are?

Oh, yeah!

-Let's think about this.
-Okay.

You've got two rabbits,

who find a rocket ship
in their backyard…

Bear, are you saying that
these pictures make a story?

Yeah, picture story!

[exclaims]

Sure! There are lots
of ways to tell a story.

And using pictures is one of them.

Like these.

But…

what's next?

-Yeah, what next?
-Well…

That's for you two to figure out.

But I bet everybody would like
to hear more about the rabbits

and maybe where the rabbits go…

in the rocket ship!

-Right.
-Yeah, yeah!

Like, maybe… to the moon!

Oh!

[background music]

There. I think I have
enough chairs for everybody.

[doorbell ringing]

Hey! It's the doorbell.

Oh, this is so exciting.
Everybody's here!

Hello!

And welcome to the…
Big Blue… House?

There's nobody here.

Hello, hello, Bear!
I'm here for the Story Festival.

Who? Ha!

-Grandma Flutter, it's you!
-Yes! How ya doin', Bear?

Just fine. Go right on into the
living room, and join Doc Hogg.

Oh! Don't mind if I do, Bear.
Don't mind if I do.

This is so exciting. I can't
wait for everyone else to come.

[music]

Hold on!
Hold on, Bear! Coming through!

It's Lois! Our Woodland
Valley telephone operator!

No, no, Bear.

It's me, Lois, the Woodland
Valley Telephone Operator!

Lois, that's what I just…

Never mind.

Hello, Lois!
Go right into the living room!

Fine, Bear, just fine!

Pardonnez-moi, Bear.

It's Jacques. Hi, Jacques.

-Bonjour, my friend!
-Go right into the living room.

-Hello, Doc Owl.
-Who?

Just join everyone in
the living room, please.

Hey, Rabbit.
You're right on time.

Just go right into the living room.

It's right over there.

Hi… Lois?

But…

Oh, hi, Grandma Etta.
Hi, Grandpa Otto.

Hi! Yep.

Just go right into the living room.

All righty, Bear.

Well, I think that's everybody.

Now, the festival can begin!

Did you just hear
somebody knocking.

But I thought everybody
was already… here?

Hello, Bear!

Hello, Jeramiah!
Hi, Bullfrog.

Go right on in.

Right into the living room.

So, Jeramiah Tortoise.
How are you, old timer?

I'm old! That's how I am.

[laughter]

Jeremiah Tortoise is the oldest
creature Woodland Valley!

Didn't I just say that?

Jeramiah, exactly how old are you?

Well, Bear.
Old enough to quit counting.

[both laughing]

Good one.
Old one, but a good one.

But enough chitchat, Bear!

Let's get this show on the road!

Right you are!
Everyone's waiting for you.

Jeramiah judges
the Story Festival every year.

Isn't this exciting? Come on.

As you know,

well perhaps you don't know,
but you should know,

well I wouldn't hold it against you…

well, anyway, as I do every year,

well, not every year…

There was that one year I didn't…

Well, anyway, this year,
I'll be judging the festival.

If memory serves, Jeremiah,

you haven't even finished judging
last year's festival yet.

Well, how could I, Doc?

Why, you didn't even finish
telling your story

until last week!

[all laughing]

True, true. But that was
some story, you have to admit.

I especially like the part where…

Anyway…

as the judge of this year's festival,

as I've done in previous years,

this year I'd like to set some rules.

-Good.
-I like rules.

Rule number One:
everyone have fun!

[all laughing]

Rule number two:

everyone have fun.

Yes, that's my favorite one.

Wasn't that the same
as rule number one?

Guess we'll have
twice as much fun.

Let the storytelling begin!

[shouting in joy] Yeah!

And after they found
the rocket in their yard,

the rabbits went to Outer Space
and had a picnic…

[both humming]

…and study the discipline
of medicine

to become the doctor he is today.

What a great story, Doc.

Yes, that's how our story ends.

Or does it!

Huh?

In many ways, becoming a
doctor was only the beginning

of the pig we've come to know
and love as ol' Doc Hogg.

-Oh, yes, that's true…
-It was only a few years ago

that I had the hardest test
of my doctoring career…

♪ So off into the wild blue yonder ♪

♪ The blue footed booby flew ♪

♪ With each flap of her graceful wings ♪

♪ Her legend grew and grew ♪

[humming]

Wow. That was great, Lois.

Thank you.

[chatter]

Once, there was
a beautiful princess…

♪ There once was a princess ♪

♪ Who played with a ball of gold ♪

♪ It fell into the well ♪

♪ So deep and so cold ♪

What am I to do? I love my gold ball.

I can help, although I'm so small.

♪ The frog jumped into the water
With a mighty leap ♪

♪ And swam to the bottom
So very deep ♪

♪ He found the ball
And brought it to the top ♪

♪ The princess was overjoyed,
she almost could pop ♪

Oh, dear Frog,
I'll grant you any wish.

Let me be your friend.
Let me eat from your dish.

This I cannot do.

♪ Off she ran back to the castle ♪

I'll have to go after her.
What a hassle.

Who can that be? Aha!

It is me.
The Frog Prince come for his wish.

For helping your daughter,
I want one little kiss.

Oh, go away.
Get out of my sight.

Now, daughter,
you must do what is right.

A promise you made, is this true?

Yes, but what am I to do?

You must give this frog his reward.

Keeping a promise
is not so very hard.

You don't have to kiss him.

♪ As soon as her lips touched his ♪

[kiss]

♪ The room spun around
With a bang and a whiz ♪

♪ And before anybody knew ♪

♪ There on the table
Sat not one frog but two! ♪

Now that I see you more
eye to eye,

you're kind of cute, and that's no lie.

You're a knockout!

And that's the story
of the Frog Prince.

What a great story, Shadow.

Bullfrog, are you okay?

That's the most beautiful story
I ever heard.

Aaaah!

Oh …and Clamiana Jones grabbed
the treasure of pearls…

and was about to swim
away from the shark…

when the shark said…

"Hi. My name's Sharkie.
Can I help you with your treasure?"

Oh! That's a very good voice!

The shark gave Clamiana Jones
a ride all the way back to shore.

And they became the best of friends.

The…

[indistinct]

End.

Yay! [laughter]

Very good, Pip.
Very good, Pop. Well read!

And then I said,

"Who's there at the door?

-Who's there?"
-Right.

-And who do you think it was?
-Who?

My cousin! Hootie!

[all laughing]

And so, the mouse whose
cheese had disappeared,

told the cheese stealing dragon

to give back the cheese
or suffer the consequences.

Whoa!

Then, with the help of his cousin Nutter,

rode back to the kingdom
on a bicycle made of cheese,

with enough Camembert

to feed all Tiny Kingdom
for years to come.

And everyone lived happily ever after.

The end!

Wow! Great story!

[all talking at once]

Tutter, you've learned
to tell a terrific story.

Thank you, Bear.

And how about that middle, huh?
That was some middle, huh?

Yes, it was wonderful, Tutter.

In fact, this whole festival was great.

Yeah!

Jeremiah, what did you think?

Well, as far as I'm concerned,
they're all winners!

Yay!

I'm a winner.
He's a winner. She's a winner…

Yeah!

But what is a winner?

Let's examine this.

-A winner is…
-I agree with you, Jeramiah.

In fact, I could listen
to these stories all over again.

[all laughing]

[laughing]

[exhales]

Wow, some day, huh?

Why don't we go up
and tell Luna all about it?

Come on!

[background music]

Ah! There she is! Hello, Luna.

Hello, Bear.

So tell me, how was
your day in the Big Blue House?

Well, Luna,
we had such a great day!

It was our annual
Woodland Valley Story Festival

and every one came to tell a story.

Oh!

-I wish I could have been there.
-It was great!

Doc Hogg told us the story of his life.

[laughing] That must have been
quite a long tale!

Well you know Doc.

And Tutter told a story about a
mouse looking for some cheese.

And Pip and Pop read
their story from a book.

And Ojo and Treelo
told a story with pictures!

-Oh my, how original.
-Yeah.

And you know, Luna,

it was so much fun
listening to all those stories,

it almost made me want to get
in there and tell one too!

Why Bear, you know you've
just told me a wonderful story!

Really?

Sure!

You tell me a story
every time I see you.

The story of your day!

And I must say,

the stories you tell of what happens
in the Big Blue House are the best!
