These are called therapy dogs.

Oh, those are real therapy dogs!

That's what I'm going to be.

They are calm

and soothing

and want to make everyone feel better.

Well, I'm relaxed already just looking at them.

Our jobs today is

to see if dogs make people more relaxed or more stressed.

And what do you mean when you say stressed?

What sorts of things might cause you to be uptight, nervous?

I've had a couple of bad experiences with dogs.

What?

You never told me this.

I just get this feeling...

like I'm not really, not really comfortable.

You do realize you're on a show that's hosted by a dog, right?

Stress is often responsible

for a response that's called fight or flight.

Yeah, I know about fight or flight.

Fight or flight means that

adrenaline gets pumped into your system

and you get a lot of power and energy.

So you either have the power

to stay to back and fight your fear,

or you have the power to run away from your fear.

DR. BALLENGER: The adrenaline has been released.

Your heart rate goes up.

It's giving you everything you need to run

or fight.

So let's talk about how you might measure stress

and use our friends here for your challenge.

Maybe we can take the pulse of the patients

before and after they play with the dogs?

Yeah.

When you say "take the pulse,"

what do you mean?

I remember that.

Your pulse is how you can feel your heartbeat.

It measures beats...

Beats per minute.

How many times you can feel your heart beat in one minute.

Do you know where you can check your pulse?

Wrist? Up here.

This is called your carotid pulse,

and then the one that you've seen most people use--

the radial pulse.

RUFF: Dr. Madi is going to measure Mike's pulse

MADI: I'm just going to time it.

DR. BALLENGER: So what is his pulse?

.

.

MADI: Beats per minute.

RUFF: beats per minute.

That seems pretty calm.

Get on the floor with Shane.

Just kind of...

He's shy. We'll give you a little bit of time.

Like a minute?

RUFF: I have to study.

This is how a professional therapy dog works.

Apparently you are to sit there and look cute and cuddly.

I could do that.

All right, I want you

to take his pulse again.

We're going to do it for seconds.

RUFF: seconds. Now that means Madi will

have to multiply by four to equal one minute.

. So what is his pulse?

. You got it.

RUFF: .

The dog had a calming effect on him.

DR. BALLENGER: Your pulse came down by four beats per minute.

RUFF: Great job, guys!

Head back to Studio G.

Ha-ha!

I told you, Blossom: dogs are very relaxing.

Do you think it was just being quiet

that helped your pulse go down?

I don't know.

Do you think we can do some tests

on subjects without a dog?

RUFF: No, no, no, no.

You're fine! You're fine!

Come back. You proved it. You're fine!

That's called a control group.

A control group?

Those will be the patients that get to sit

and then you can compare them to those who held the dog

to see whether it's time, or whether it's the dog.

Mike and Madi will test two groups of people.

One group will play with dogs

and one group will just sit quietly and do nothing.

Then they'll compare what happens with their pulses.

What is your prediction?I think

some people might havehigherpulse rates,

because they might be scared of dogs.

RUFF: Scared of dogs!

Come on, Mike, you're supposed

to be on my side.

This is the Farmers' Market.

RUFF: I love farmers' markets.

Don't be afraid to barter for your ingredients.

ALL: ...a $ budget.

Uh, little tip?

Bargaining is expected at an outdoor market.

First, filé powder.

I see you're grinding up some sassafras. Oh, yeah.

Filé powder is made from dried and cured sassafras leaves.

So how much does filé powder cost?

$. an ounce.

$.!

Now you got powder.

Here's your jar of filé.

We made a deal for three dollars.

NINA: So now we have sausage, shrimp, okra and crab.

Well, I think a pound of shrimp looks about right.

They're six dollars a pound.

Well, I can knock off a dollar,

but that's about all that I can do.

Okay, take it!

Sausage.

We retail it here for $..

We only have

seven dollars left.Seven dollars.

Then how about if I give it to you for $.?

That's good. That's fair enough.

Now we need okra.

It's four dollars a basket.

Two dollars?

I can sell you half of this for two.

That'd be great. Okay.

Perfect.

Okay, got a buck left.

What do we need now?

We need crab.

We don't have crabs.

What?!What?!

What? You're out?

You will be my helper.

We'll go and catch some crabs.

How much?

$..

Good.

RUFF: That's perfect!

That's what they have: $..

Let's start working on creating our study.

I think the first column should be when

we take the first pulse, and the second column

to be when we take a second pulse.

RUFF: Now remember, their experiment

is to measure people's pulses, before and after.

If they go up, dogs cause stress,

and if they go down, dogs are calming.

We're doing this study to see if

kids get more stressed or less stressed around dogs,

and we were wondering if your son would like to help out?

Okay. Great! Follow us.

Go.

Okay, this should be pretty easy.

This kid looks very relaxed.

Stop.

.

RUFF: Times four.

MADI: .

RUFF: Nice, calming number.

So now we're going to bring in the dogs.

And we're just going

to you play with them for three minutes.

RUFF: Now the professionals enter.

Look at the calm and cuteness.

Oh, his pulse is going down to, like, zero.

What? Wait, no, no.

We don't want that to happen.

So, yeah, it'll go down a little bit.

So we're just going to do your pulse again. Go.

RUFF: Here's the -second check.

Time.

times four is... .

RUFF: ? His pulse went up!

But he looks calm!

Oh, man, nowmystress is going up.

First off, we'll introduce you to this turkey neck.

Just imagine if you were a crab, huh?

That would be the most juicy morsel in the world.

Oh, that looks tasty tome!

The heck with the crab!

Let's get these nets over in the bayou.

What's the bayou?What's the bayou?

Slow-moving, sweet, fresh water.

I'm fishingby you.

Fishingbayou.

[laughing] That's a good one.

Murray, write that one down.

One, two... Come and get it, crab!

Three! Heave!

Heave!

Those nets will sink down to the bottom,

and the slow-moving bayou water

will bring the scent to the crab.

The crab will paddle real quickly into the net.

RUFF: Wise words from Wilfred Brimley.

The moment of truth.Oh, it's heavy.

Will they have a crab? Yes!

RUFF: Yes! They caught a crab!

You want to escape, don't you, little guy?

There you go, Ruff.

RUFFMAN: That is $. well spent right there.

Now you can pet him any way you want.

Let's not get too attached

to the crab because we're going to eat him.

You got it? Don't let go. I'm letting go.

[shrieks]

Whoa, Nina!

He's scary.

This guy will make excellent gumbo.

But is that enough? I mean, don't we need more crabs?

I'll give you, free of charge,

Yeah, let's interpret our data.

So let's see who went up.

Five. Five out of ten, so that's %.

RUFF: So % of the participants got stressed out.

Now pulse is up in the control group,

two out of five, which is four out of ten, which is %.

MIKE: So in the dog group, % of the pulses went up,

and in the control group, % of the pulses went up.

More pulses went up in the dog group than the control group.

It looks like playing with dogs made peoplemorestressed.

This is terrible.

The pulses probably went up

because people were playing with them

on the floor and making them use all their energy.

That's a good point, Madi.

Maybe all that activity increased their pulse.

If you really want to get the answer to this,

you may have to go back to the drawing board.

Okay, so it looks like dogs

might, might make people more stressed.

But we don't know for sure.

Their experiment wasn't perfect.

That's right, Blossom.

They should repeat the experiment, but next time

they should make sure that the kids who don't play with dogs

are just as active as the kids who do play with dogs.

Bye, Ruff, we're heading back to Studio G.

And we'll see you there.

RUFF: A solid points!

ALL: Yeah! Good job!

And for proving decisively that dogs are a calming influence,

What's that, Blossom?

Okay, okay, I know.

Their study was inconclusive.

Whatever.

If you really want to get the answer to this,

you may have to go back to the drawing board.

Yes, in the true spirit of scientific inquiry,

more tests would be needed

Oh, come on.

But for introducing kids to dogs--

Oh, oh, for making one mean pot of gumbo

and snagging the first-prize ribbon: points.

Yeah!

For a grand, incredible total of points!

All right! Yeah! Whoo!

But is that all the points a dog can give?

ALL: No.

What time is it?

ALL: Bonus points!

Five points

to the contestant who braved the wildlife

of the bayou and held a crab:

Rosario.

ALL: Yeah!

Now Nina, I would have said that you held a crab,

but you more or less dropped the crab.

[shrieking]

And another five points for Mike and his explanation

Nicely done, Mike.

Nice.Well done.

Rosario with points, you're today's daily winner.

Yeah!

Now Rosario, you know how this works.

We have two okra,

Actually, Ruff, I think I'll give this one to Nina

I think that's very sweet of you.

You still get the points, but Nina,
