ELINOR: And tonight is a special treat.
ELINOR: We're having my favorite.

ARI: Yay!
Wait a minute...
is that soup made from your backyard?
ARI: ...like leaves and mud?
Arrgh!
ELINOR: [giggle]
No, silly. It's vegetable soup,
but we call it backyard soup because we use vegetables
that grow in our backyard garden.
ARI: Whew!
That sounds better.
ELINOR: I think we got everything.
Peas, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and radishes.
ARI: That's a lot of different veggies.
ELINOR: Mmm-hmmm.
My mom says these plants need a lot of water
to help them grow,
so it's good that it's been raining a lot.
ARI: And rain makes the ground so squishy.
Don't plants need sunshine too?
ELINOR: Yep, water and sun help plants grow big
and strong to make all these veggies.
ARI: ...that turn into our dinner!
BOTH: [giggle]
MR. RABBIT: Thanks for picking the veggies...
and helping to make the soup, kids!

ARI: Mmmmmmmm...
It's sooo good.
Can I have another bowl?
MR. RABBIT: A third bowl of soup?

But, tomorrow we are taking the train..
to visit Elinor's grandparents.

ELINOR: That's what I call my grandparents!

ARI: Oh.

far away, in a place called Desert Town.

ELINOR: I haven't been there since I was a baby bunny,
so I don't really remember what it's like.

I looked out the window the whole time.
GRANDMA: Well, I love riding trains...
and looking out the window, too.

I saw lots of big trees and bushes...
and then later I saw smaller plants.
GRANDPA: Well, what do you think of Desert Town so far?
ELINOR: I like it!
It's so different here.
GRANDMA: How so, Elinor?
ELINOR: Well, first of all, it's a lot hotter here.

ELINOR: And I also noticed...
that the ground looks different.
ELINOR: There's almost no grass and the dirt...
doesn't look like the dirt back home.
It's so dusty!
At home the ground is wet and squishy.
GRANDMA: That's a great observation, Elinor.
GRANDPA: Welcome to the desert! [chuckle]
It's dry and hot here.
ELINOR: Hmm...
RANGER RABBIT: That means there's less...
water around, Elinor.
It doesn't rain as much in the desert,
so the ground looks and feels dry.
ELINOR: That is so interesting!
Well, dry or wet, I'm just happy to see you,
Baba and Bibi!
GRANDMA: Oh you're too much little buddy.
ELINOR: Ahhh!
Wow, I was thirsty!
GRANDPA: What would you like to do first, Elinor?
ELINOR: [gasp] I know just the thing.
I want to show you how to make my favorite soup!
GRANDPA: You are going to show us how to make soup?
[giggle] This I gotta see.
ELINOR: Well, you'll have to help me with the cooking part.
But I'm going to get all the ingredients from your garden!
GRANDPA: Wonderful.
What's it called?
ELINOR: It's called Backyard Soup!
GRANDMA: Well, that is soooo interesting!
ELINOR: And delicious!

GRANDPA: The backyard is through that door.
ELINOR: Ok, I'll be right back!

ELINOR: Let's see, I need peas, potatoes, cauliflower,

Hmm, where are the peas?
ELINOR: I'll try the next vegetable.

ELINOR: Your backyard garden doesn't have peas or potatoes...
or any of the veggies we need for Backyard Soup!

ELINOR: Not one!
All the plants are different.
I didn't recognize any of them.
ELINOR: Why don't the same veggies that grow...
in my garden at home grow in this garden?
GRANDMA: Well, I wonder...
what do you think is different about this garden...

ELINOR: Hmmm, that's a good question!
ELINOR: Let's go find out.

ELINOR: It's much hotter and sunnier.
ELINOR: And the ground is really dry.
That means there's a lot less water here.

Maybe that's why the plants are different.
A plant that likes to drink lots of water,
and doesn't like a lot of sun,
might not grow very well here.
ELINOR: That's it!
Baba, Bibi, I think I figured it out!
ELINOR: The plants we have at home...
probably wouldn't like it here...
because it's really sunny and there isn't much water.
But I bet the plants here do!
GRANDMA: That's right, Elinor!
The desert gets more sun and less water.
GRANDPA: So the plants that grow here...
don't need as much water,
and they like having a lot of heat and sun!
ELINOR: [gasp] That's so interesting!
GRANDMA: Here, let us show you what we do grow...
in our desert garden.
GRANDMA: These are peppers...
ELINOR: Oh!
GRANDMA: and here are some beans...
and oh, this one is called squash.
ELINOR: Cool...
[sigh]
GRANDMA: What's wrong, Elinor?
ELINOR: Well, I'm happy that these plants like to grow here,
but that means I can't show you how to make...
my favorite soup.
None of the veggies in the recipe grow here.
GRANDPA: Well, Elinor, I think that the vegetables we have here
are different, but how you make the soup can be just the same.
ELINOR: Really?
You can make soup out of these vegetables?
GRANDMA: Why, yes!
And it's delicious!
ELINOR: [gasp]
Even those plants?
GRANDPA: Yes!
They're called cactuses, and they taste great in a soup!
Ow!
Er, just be careful when you touch it.
ELINOR: Ooooh, oh!
GRANDMA: [chuckle] Oh!

ELINOR: What's that, Bibi?
GRANDMA: Lots and lots of love.

Yeah, we're gonna need a bigger basket!

ELINOR: I've never seen this kind of tree before!

I wonder what it is?
SENOR TAPIR: You remind me of another curious explorer...
who loved plants more than anything.
Her name was Ynes Mexia.

SENOR TAPIR: ♪Ynes Mexia, took every chance, ♪
[span]♪ To go and explore, and look for new plants, ♪
♪One day she heard of a really tall tree, ♪
♪She went to find it, out of curiosity, ♪
♪The tallest of palm trees, It likes mountain air, ♪
[span]♪ To find where it grows, ♪
[span]♪ She had to climb way up there. ♪
♪Hiking through storms, ♪
♪And wind and sun, She got a bit lost, ♪
♪But she still had fun, Ynes Mexia, ♪
♪Took every chance, to go and explore, ♪

[span]♪ "At last" she said, when she first saw the tree, ♪
♪Two hundred feet high, as tall as she could see, ♪
♪She wanted to have, this tree back home, ♪
♪so she took some seeds to grow her own, ♪

♪She went and explored, and found new plants! ♪
ARI: Awesome!

Oh! That's the last batch, kids, they are aaaaaaall done!

ELINOR: I can't wait to set up our carrot cupcake stand.
OLIVE: Me too, Elinor!
I bet everyone is going to love our cupcakes.
ARI: Yeah, they smell so good!

OLIVE: I'm almost done with our sign.

ARI: Yeah, it's making me...

to share with everyone in the park.

You know, just to make sure they came out ok?
MR. RABBIT: Well, you already tasted the ingredients...
on their own,
then again when we mixed them to make the batter,
and then you tasted a cupcake from the first batch.
If you keep "tasting" so much, there won't be any left for
everyone else!
ARI: Yeah, but, what if something went wrong...
in the oven this time?
We have to make sure they taste good.
MR. RABBIT: Hmmm...
ARI: It's called "Double Checking."
MR. RABBIT: Oh, double checking,
double checking indeed.
Okay, we'll try one more.

ELINOR: Wow, they are so good!
OLIVE: Mhmm
ARI: Mmmm.
MR. RABBIT: Not bad, if I do say so myself.
ARI: It's a good thing we double-checked.

ARI: Ohhh, so that's why they're here.
They're having a snack!
ELINOR: Well, there are lots of flowers here.
That must be why there are so many bees.
ELINOR: Hmm...
But I wonder...
how did the bees find these flowers?
ARI: What do you mean?
ELINOR: I mean, how did they know how to get here?
We followed the bees to get here.
But how did the bees find this place?
OLIVE: Huh, you're right.
This place is kind of hard to find.
ARI: Yeah, if we hadn't followed the bees,
I don't think we would have ever found these flowers.
ELINOR: Hmmm...
That's so interesting!
We need more observations.

ELINOR: Ok, how did the bees find the flowers?
ARI: I know!
Maybe they have a map?
My parents use a map to find our way...
when we go hiking.
OLIVE: I don't think bees can carry maps.
But maybe they followed some signs?
ELINOR: But I didn't see any signs in the forest,
did you?
OLIVE: No.
Hmm...
ELINOR: I know!
Why don't we "think like bees" to figure it out?
OLIVE: Think like bees?
ELINOR: Yeah, let's imagine that we are bees.
If I were a bee,
how would I find where the flowers are?
ARI: I can do that!

Where are the flowers?
Any flowers over here?
Calling all flowers.
ELINOR: What did you notice, Ari?
ARI: Well, I noticed even from what up high...
I could still see the flowers.
That's because they're so bright and colorful.
ELINOR: Hmm, I never thought about that before.
The bright colors makes them easy to find.
OLIVE: So maybe that's how the bees find the flowers!
By their color!
ELINOR: Yeah but that only works...
when they're close enough to see the flowers.
How do they find the flowers from far away?
ARI: [sniff] Mmm...
I like how these flowers smell.
OLIVE: [sniff] Wait.
I remember I could smell the flowers...
before we even saw them.
ELINOR: That's it!
The bees must have followed the flower smell...
to get here!
OLIVE: I get it.
When they're far away,
the bees smell the flowers...
ELINOR: ...And once they are closer,
they can see their bright colors.
We figured it out!
KIDS: [cheer] Awesome!
ARI: Wow, the flowers look and smell good.
That's such a smart way for the flowers...
to get the bees to come over.
ELINOR: [gasp] Olive, Ari, I think I figured out...
how to get everyone to come try our cupcakes!
OLIVE: How?
ELINOR: We'll make our cupcake stand smelly and bright...
like the flowers, so everyone else can find us!

and crayons from the house.
