Hi there.

Today, we're in new york city,

Where there's more traffic
than anywhere in the country.

Most people don't drive
their own cars.

To get around, you walk,
take the train or bus,

Or take a cab.

This is a taxicab.
I'll give you a tour.

New york city taxis
are bright yellow

So they can be spotted quickly.

Once you've hailed a cab,

You're a passenger,

And you have to pay
for the ride.

This rate sign with the prices
is one the door.

To use a taxi,
you watch the top light.

If it's lit, it'll take you
where you want to go.

Here's the meter.

It keeps track of how much
the trip is,

And it even gives you a receipt.

Every cabby
has his trip sheet

To keep track
of daily stops and starts.

Here's my hack license.

It's permission from the city

To pick up passengers
in my cab.

People get in and out
of cabs all day,

But a driver gets lonely
without a buddy.

Here's a story
about a new york city cabby

Who finds a unique partner,

And they share
the adventures of taxi dog.

My name is maxie.

I ride in a taxi
around new york city all day.

I sit next to jim.

I belong to him,
but it wasn't always this way.

I grew up in the city,
all dirty and gritty,

Looking for food
after dark.

I roamed all around,
avoiding the pound,

And lived on my own
in the park.

One day a car stopped.
Its tire had popped.

Out stepped a tall man
I could see.

He came over and said,
as he patted my head,

"Are you lost?
Come home with me."

Oh, boy!
My tail wagged with joy.

I jumped right up
on the seat.

He said,
"my name's jim."

I could ride home with him.
He'd give me food to eat.

I ate and ate.
I cleaned the plate.

Jim took a scarf
of bright red,

Tied it around me,
glad that he found me,

And kissed the top of my head.

Ahh...my wish had come true.
I could start life anew.

At last, I had a warm home.

With someone to love me
and take care of me,

No longer would I roam.

Jim said,

"Your name's maxie.
You'll ride in my taxi.

"We'll ride
all over town.

"We'll see the sights,
the streets, and lights.

We'll go riding
uptown and down."

There was much to see--

Every building and tree,

With people and cars
everywhere.

All the interesting places,
new friends and new faces,

Each time we'd pick up a fare.

"Taxi!"

One time a big lady,
whose name was sadie,

Was singing in a show.

She broke into song,
and I sang along.

You couldn't tell me
from the pro.

♪ La la la
la la la la ♪♪

"To the hospital quick!
My wife is sick!"

Cried a man
as we stopped for the light.

"Our baby's due."
Like lightning we flew.

We made it in time.

Whew. What a night.

Sometimes when it's slow,
to the airport we go.

We get in the line
at the stand.

We wait for a fare,
and a hot dog we share

While we watch planes
take off and land.

The door opened wide.
Guess who jumped inside.

Two clowns
and a chimp called murray!

"Everything's
upside down!"

"We're preforming at 8:oo,
and our flight arrived late.

To the circus,
and please hurry."

We get big tips
on most of our trips.

Jim is surprised
at this treat,

But he doesn't know
I put on a show

For the passengers
in the back seat.

At the end of each day,
when we've earned our pay,

We drive the cab back
to its spot.

Our boss named lou says,
"how'd you do? Have a biscuit."

He likes me a lot.

It's like a dream.
Me and jim, we're a team.

I'm always at his side.

We never stand still.
Every day's a thrill.

Come join us next time
for a ride!

[Horns honking]

Jim was lucky
to have found maxie.

Dogs can be
remarkably faithful friends,

And sometimes,
with the right kind of training,

They can also become
important partners.

Come on.

That's it.

Come here, cossie.

My name is lisa ferrerio
I'm 15 years old.

I live
in broomfield, colorado.

This is cosmo,
my canine companion.

I have osteogenesis imperfecta.
It's a brittle bone disease.

My bones break really easily.

I've been in a wheelchair
about 1o years.

Cosmo has been
a tremendous help.

I trained with cosmo
for 14 days at the cci,

Which stands for canine
companions for independence,

In san diego.

I fell instantly in love
with cosmo.

I'm afraid
to do this.

Put it on.

Cosmo is never away from me.

He goes to the mall
and to school with me.

I think that
looks good on you.

We should get this.
It's our school colors.

What size is it?

It's on sale, too.

It's cute. Do you think
it would fit me?

Yeah. Ok, I'll buy it.

Let's pay for it.

The most important part
of our relationship

Is that I can always
depend upon cosmo

And know that
he'll be there for me.

Come here.

Take it to lisa.

My mom thought I would benefit
from a canine companion

Because the dog could pull me in
the mall or help me at school

And help me when I'm home
by myself.

Cosmo not only takes care of me,

But I also take care of cosmo.

We take care of each other.

Ok, cos. Food.

At cci,
we studied dog psychology.

We learned about their moods.

Sometimes he's happy,
sometimes he's sad,

And sometimes he's sleepy.

Cosmo. Cossie.
Come on.

Cos. Cosmo.

Cosmo's a dog, so naturally,
sometimes he misbehaves.

If I tell him a command,
sometimes he won't do it,

But not very often.

Up! Good boy.
Switch.

Switch, cossie.

That's it.
Good boy!

Oh, good boy.

Cosmo's a different dog
when he's working.

When he puts on
the backpack,

He knows he has
a job to do.

The backpack is the way cosmo
pulls me through the halls.

I hold on to a strap
that's on his backpack.

He carries my purse, keys,
my folder, or pen.

I wouldn't be as involved in
school activities without cosmo.

In newspaper,
we deliver papers,

And cosmo pulls me
through the halls.

Sometimes he carries
the newspapers in his backpack.

Go in. That's it.

Good boy.

I'm the feature editor
in my newspaper class,

And I design my page

And put pictures and stories
on my page.

I need help, please.

About this headline,

What do you think
is a good verb?

"Winter dance...dazzles."

Cossie, stay.
No. Down.

Cosmo's perfect for me
because he's very gentle.

He's very strong in pulling.

He can pull 18o pounds,

So it's no sweat for him
to pull me through the halls.

He's very patient
and just very loving.

Cosmo, speak.

I like this one.
I'm taking it home.

There's some over here
and some over there.

Ok, cos, ready?

Yeah, cosser!

Get the juice.

That's it.
Come on, cos.

Most taxi drivers
eat on the run.

It's just a matter
of pulling over

For some classic new york
street cuisine.

I'll have a hot dog
with the works, please.

Lots of relish.

How about just some onions

And a lot of mustard

Oh, yeah.
That's perfect.

Just the way I like it.

You know, I guess
you could call this a taxi dog.

Ha ha ha!

Well, if you liked
the adventures of taxi dog,

Here are three other trips

That will keep
your meter running,

But don't take my word for it.

Hi. My name's alisa reyes.

I've read an incredible book
called I want a dog.

The author is dayal kaur khalsa.

This book is unusual and funny.

Mae wants a dog, but her parents
say she's not old enough.

Mae isn't happy
with this answer.

She tries everything
to get a dog.

When she can't have a dog,

She pretends her skate
is her pet.

This leads to all kinds
of silly situations.

Soon, all her friends
are walking with roller skates.

Mae took good care of her skate,
but she wanted a dog.

If you want a pet,
you should read this book.

Have you ever wondered how dogs
and people became friends?

Here's how
it might have happened,

In a book called
the first dog.

The story begins long ago.

The boy in the story
is called kip.

Kip is followed home by a wolf.

The wolf keeps begging for food.

Kip doesn't want
to share his food.

The wolf's senses
are very sharp.

He tries to warn kip
when danger is coming.

I'm michael.

I can't tell you
the ending,

But if you love dogs,
this book's for you.

Have you ever been
to a big city?

This book gives a glimpse
of city life.

It's called
taxi: a book of city words.

It's morning in the city,

And the taxi driver
has a busy day ahead.

His first stop
is a tall office building.

His passengers are in a hurry.

He's off
to the railroad station,

Where he'll find
his next customer.

This will be a long day.
There's lots to see.

We're off to the zoo,

A cruise ship,

And a trip through a tunnel.

As you're riding through town,

You'll discover
many new city words.

The colorful pictures
will help guide you along.

I'm tiffany. This is a ride
I'll never forget.

The next time
you're in the city,

Stop and grab
taxi: a book of city words.

It looks like a tough job.

Well, I've really enjoyed
driving a cab for a day

And having you along

But my shift is over,

And it's time for me
to call it a day.

Hey, I guess now
is the perfect time

For me to try out
my own cab-hailing technique.
