Balloons.

Balloons.

Hi, there!

What a beautiful day
to be in the park.

Ice cream!

Ice cream!
Miss!

What can I
do for you?

I'll have a...
Chocolate.

Or maybe
a strawberry.

No, wait.

Definitely a vanilla
with two scoops.

And some
rainbow sprinkles.

All righty.

Great.

There we go,
and thank you.

Thank you.

Mmm. I've been waiting
all day for this.

[Plop]

Oh, no!

Miss!

Ok, kids,
everybody on.

Let's go.
Come on.

Watch your step.

Yay!
Whee!

Whee!
Yay!

It's a long line.
I hope I get on.

Come on, guys.
We're all waiting here.

Nah!

How would
you like it

If somebody cut
in front of you?

Sorry.
All filled up.

Ohh!

Can you
believe that?

Ha ha!

Nah nah nah.

Blah!
Ha ha!

I have feelings.

B-bl-b-bl!

B-bl-b-bl!

Ow!

You have
feelings, too.

Where?
I don't see any.

You can't see
your feelings.

[Sniff sniff]

You can't
smell them.

You can't touch them
with your hands,

But someone can
touch your feelings

With words, stupid.

See?

That's how
blah feels.

Blah!
Blah!

Shake.

I'm feeling
fine now.

Me, too.

There's nothing like
the merry-go-round

To lift your spirits
when you're feeling low.

You can't see
or touch your feelings,

But you've got them,

A whole rainbow
of feelings.

You may feel
red with rage,

Green with envy,
or tickled pink.

That's what this book
is all about.

Look at adam run.

I can run
faster.

Look at adam build.

I can build
higher.

Listen to adam.

Listen to me.

Adam can read.

C-a-t

I can read more.

Ha ha ha!
Adam is funny.

Ha ha ha!

I am funny,
too.

Where is adam?

Where am i?

Wah-aah!

Adam is hurt.

I'm hurt, too.

Look at adam.

Look at me!

I see you,
too, dear.

You're wonderful.

She's jealous, mommy.
She wants attention.

You're clever,
dear.

Ooh!
Ooh!

Ooh!
Yay!

Miss rudolph,
see what tom did.

Look what tom did.

All by himself.

How?

Wow!

He must feel proud.

He's a genius.

That's some
space capsule.

He used up
all the blocks.

It's great, tom.

Thanks.

It's easy.

Oh!
Oh!

Poor tom.

I can't look.

John's always
doing things.

He has no
feelings.

Come see
what john did.

He did it
on purpose.

You're mean.

Spiteful.

You knocked it down!

I feel like
knocking you down,
mean old thing.

I'm sorry.

Tom must
feel awful.

John,
too.

We have a new girl in class.

I'd like to hide.

They're all
staring at me.

Is she laughing
at me?

I wish
I could fall

Through the cr*ck
in the floor.

She looks shy.

You'd feel shy if you
were standing there.

She looks nice.

Hello.

My name is
patricia.

...bellowed the giant.

But before
anyone could answer...

Boo!

Aah-aah!

Aah-aah!

[Footsteps]

[Louder footsteps]

Aw.
There, there.

It's all right.

Who took the rest
of my crayons?

I knew it was you!

You always take
my things without asking!

Do I take your things
without asking?

I bet you broke
all the points!

If there's one thing
that gets me mad,

It's someone taking
my things without asking!

I bet you're
not even sorry!

I just
borrowed them.

Sticks and stones
can break your bones,

But words
can never hurt you.

That's what you think.

Rrr!

Uh...
Angry.

Boo-hoo!
[Sniff sniff]

Sad.

Yay!

Happy.

Um...
Lonely?

Shy.

Insulted.

Brrr.

Cold--
I mean scared.

Rrr!

We had that one.
Angry.

Furious!

Furious.

Excited.

Impatient.

Proud.

Give me!
Give me!

Selfish.

Shh.

Quiet.

How do you feel?

Fine, thank you.

Honk honk!

Cackle cackle!

Bawk bawk!

Honk honk!

Sometimes sounds can
express your feelings

Even better than words.

D-d-d-d-d!

Oh oh oh!

See what I mean?

Composer kirk nurock
can take sounds like that

And turn them into
a different kind of music.

Arf arf
ruff ruff

Ruff ruff
arf arf

Uh uh
uh uh

Uh uh
uh uh

Ooh...
Ooh...

Ooh!
Ooh!

Ooo
ooo

Ooo
ooo

Ooo
ooo

Ooo
ooo

That's a passing.
That's the way it works.

How did that feel?

Fun.
Good.

So far, we've had

Voice and
percussion sounds.

I'm kirk nurock.

I'm a composer
working with natural sound.

Ahh

Ooh

Ooh
ooh

Many of the outbursts
in the natural sound technique

Are based on everyday sounds
we hear around us,

Like laughing, gibberish,
and barking sounds.

It sounds
like music to me.

Ahh...
And shake your head.

Uh
uh
uh
uh

Uh
uh
uh
uh

Everyone turn
to the person
next to you.

Turn and face
each other.

Hold your partner's
shoulders.

Sustain a middle
register tone,

And we're going to
shake each other.

Aah
aah

Yuyuyu
yuyuyu

Yuyuyu
yuyuyu

Ok.

Today we're
concerned with

How sounds
affect feelings

And how feelings
are expressed
through sounds.

Everyone just do
gibberish like this.

Peocnmbjhgy

Vbdkerpgidn
pdgfjrkeunb

Do gibberish as if
you were angry.

Blpufgwsabn!
Frdplbursyp!

Frthjpasnmp!
Pbursmtruhs!

One pers or group can
be expressing something,

But the person
who is receiving it

Is having a whole
different experience.

No two people
are sharing
the same feelings.

That's part of
the magic music has.

Let's make
a piece of music.

Ooh
ooh

Sound and feeling are so close
that you can't sepate them.

Outburst sounds, like when
a stadium crowd cheers,

Is all feeling--

Pride, encouragement,
anxiety, and excitement.

The sound conveys
what's really going on.

Take a hey, yah!

Take a hey, yah!

Take aey, yah!

Take a hey, yah!

Ke a hey, yah!

Feeling motivates sound,
and sound affects feeling.

I can't imagine either of them
existing without the other.

Take a hey, yah!

Ahh...

[Sniff]

Whiskers d*ed.

Oh, poor whiskers.

You had her so long.

I'm sad for you.

[Sniff]

She was old.

She was sick.

She had to die
sometime.

My heart's broken.

[Sniff sniff]

She was silly.

She was funny.

[Sniff]

We'll miss you,
whiskers.

It hurts when
someone you love dies.

I've been through it.

It hurts so bad

You feel
you'll never get over it.

In some ways, you don't.

But what helped me most
was time

And good friends who let me
talk about my feelings.

Here are friends

Who understand each other
so well,

They hardly need
to say anything.

One question.

Who's that?

Who's that?

Hmm?

Who is that?

Think me there.

Ok. That is you.

Gorilla. Animal.

Koko love. Ok.

That's very good.

Dr. Penny patterson
is a psychologist.

She and koko the gorilla
share a special relationship.

For 11 years,

Penny has been teaching koko
to express her feelings

Using american sign language.

Oh, that's nice.
I like that.

Ok. Let's sit down.

Let's talk about
how you feel today.

I'm hungry. Lips.

Hungry.
Hungry. Nice.

Oh, you feel hungry.

Even animals that can't talk
have feelings.

But koko is very special

In that she can tell us
about her feelings.

We can ask her,
"how do you feel today?"

Sometimes she'll say fine,
just to be polite,

But sometimes she'll tell me
she's sad

Or tired or hungry
or thirsty.

She can talk about
those internal feelings.

How do you feel
about kitties?

Cat gorilla
have visit.

Koko love. Good.

She'd like to have
another cat vistt.

Do visit. Do. Ok.

We will
in a little while.

Trouble. Trouble.
Trouble might visit.

What?

Oh!

Koko signs trouble
about kittens

Because not long ago,
her pet kitten, all ball, d*ed.

Koko loved all ball
and treated her gently.

She handled the kitten
as if it were her own baby.

They were
very close friends.

When all ball d*ed,
koko's heart was broken.

Remember when
ball d*ed?

How did you feel?

Sorry.

Koko love. Good.

Were you sad?

What?
Frown lips. Bad.

Frown. Oh, sad.

We did our best
to make koko feel better,

But she was very sad.

We told koko we would
try to find another kitten.

We showed her pictures
of kittens.

It turns out she wanted
a kitten like ball.

What kind of kitty
would you like?

That.

That kind. Ok.

She's pointing
to this one.

She pointed to pictures
of tailless kittens.

She pointed to pictures
of gray kittens.

She said she wanted a boy,

Which were the characteristics
that matched ball's.

Me. Me need that.

Oh, honey.
We'll trto get you
a kitty like that.

She told us the solution,
in a sense,

That this could
help her feel better.

We did our best.

What's in the box?

An animal sleeping?

Ok.

There. A new kitty.

When the new kitten arrived,
she was delighted.

We found a male,
tailless kitten,

But he wasn't gray.
He was orange.

But we figured that this
would make koko happy.

She didn't want to
let that baby go.

Love that baby?

Meow

Gentle, koko.

She wants to do things

A gorilla mother would do
with a gorilla baby.

Kittens don't particularly
like this.

Instead of holding him
above her,

She'll add her feet
as a platform

So the kitten feels support.

Can you think
of a name for him?

Maybe red?

No. Don't like that.

You know what
mike called him?

Mike thought banana
was a good name.

Banana's nice.

Banana ok.

How about
a better name?

Can you think
of a better name
than banana?

Banana. Banana.
Better name.

Bad. Bad koko.

Honey,
you're not bad.
You're good.

No. You're not bad.

Oh, bad
because she doesn't
know the name.

Ok. Banana.
And she said bread.

We can take our time
thinking of a name.

She was very pleased
at that point, I think.

Those feelings were healing.
This was helping the process.

When you hear a good song,
you can't help singing along.

When you read a good book,
you can't help feeling along.

That happened to me

When I read koko's kitten
by penny patterson.

Here are books about feelings
you will enjoy.

Don't take my word for it.

I'm sure most of you
out there

Have caught fireflies
at night.

I'm kimble joyner.

I just read a great new book
about doing that.

It's called fireflies
by julie brinckloe.

The boy was eating dinner

As he saw flashing lights
outside his window.

He rushed downstairs
and finds a jar.

He punches holes in the jar
and runs outside quickly.

All the kids are out
catching fireflies.

My favorite part

Is when the boy catches
hundreds of fireflies.

The jar glows like moonlight
in his hands.

Then something
strange happened.

His fireflies grow dimmer
and dimmer.

Now the boy has
a difficult choice to make.

Should he let his fireflies
die in the jar

Or should he let them go?

I enjoyed this book.

It showed me

How people can have different
feelings at the same time.

Even if you've never
caught fireflies,

You'll know how it feels
by reading this book.

Bullies can be a problem
for kids.

I'm thomas woods.

I've found a way
to deal with bullies

In loudmouth george
and the sixth-grade bully.

George gets in the path
of big mike.

Big mike ste
george's lunch.

George has a problem

Explaining it to
his friend harriet.

George spends time
in school hungry.

Finally, harriet and george
plan to stop the big bully.

My favorite part
was the end

When george finally manages
to solve his problem.

This book is fun
and doesn't take long to read.

Even if bullies
aren't your problem,

I highly recommend it.

Hello.
I'm ivu onyejuruwa.

I love writing poetry.

That's why I read
this book,

Honey, I love
by eloise greenfield.

It's filled with love.

A poem is feelings
put into words.

The theme of all the poems
is love.

My favorite poem
is things.

It's about things
that are only temporary.

Here it is.

"Went to the corner.
Walked in the store.

"Bought me some candy.
Ain't got it no more.

"Ain't got it no more.

"Went to the beach.
Played on the shore.

"Built me a sand house.
Ain't got it no more.

Ain't got it no more."

This book shows you
there are things

You can only have
a little while,

But a poem stays
in your heart forever.

Ruff!

[Pant pant]

[Slurp slurp]

Love is the best feeling.

I couldn't resist
one more ride.

We all ride
a merry-go-round of feelings,

Going round and round
from one emotion to another.

If you think back
over your day,

You'll realize you've been
sad, happy, or excited

At least once already.

I know I have.

One of the best things
about feelings

Is sharing them.

See you next time.
