Boy, what
a beautiful day, huh?

The sea air, the sand,
the pounding surf.

There's nothing better
than a day at the beach--

Time to swim,
get some sun,

@
And build castles
in the sand

Or in the air.

I've got
everything I need.

Here's my lunch.

I brought along
some sunglasses.

These will work,
don't you think?

And my favorite book.

Oh, no!

I left my book
at home.

Hey, what's
going on here?

Everybody's reading
the same book.

Where can I get one?

Get your--

I'll take one.

Hot dog?

No, the book!

Here you go, sir.

Thanks a lot.

Sure.

Can't wait to see

What's so special
about this book.

I won't peek at the end.

I'll start
at the very beginning.

Lolly, spider, and sam
had a picnic on the beach.

"I'm full as a tick,"
said lolly.

"Me, too,"
said sam.

"Hot dogs
and lemonade
hit the spot."

"Now for a swim,"
said spider.

"Oh, no," said lolly.
"Not so soon after lunch."

"Rats!" Said spider.

"How about a nap?"
Asked sam.

"Oh, no!"
Said the others.

"Naps are no fun."

"Very true,"
said sam.

"Want to hear a story?"

"I brought my reader."

"A fine idea,"
said her friends.

"Then let's begin,"
said lolly.

The rat saw
the cat and dog.

"I see them.

I see the cat
and the dog."

The dog and cat
saw the rat.

"We see the rat,"
they said.

And that was that.

Is that the story?

Is that all?

That's it.

I didn't like it.

Oh, dull!

I'll tell
a better story.

You can't!

Can!

Let him try.

Tell one about
a rat and a cat.

Easy!

Sit down!

Lolly and spider sat down,
and sam began his story.

A rat went for a walk.

So what?

Let sam finish.

Thank you.

A rat went for a walk.

"What a fine day!"
He said.

"The sun is shining,
and all is well."

Soon he came
to a shop.

"My, my," said the rat.
"What a pretty cat!

I will buy that cat
and have a friend."

And he went
into the shop.

"I want a cat."

"Are you sure
you want a cat?"
Asked the owner.

"I'm sure.
I want that one."

"That will be 10 cents,
if you are sure."

"I'm sure.
Here is my last dime.

Give me my cat."

The rat and the cat
left the shop.

"We will be friends."

"You think so?"
Said the cat.

"Well, we'll see."

The rat and the cat
sat in the sun.

What do you do
for fun?

I catch things.

That's nice.

I am hungry.

How about lunch?

A fine idea! What is
your favorite dish?

I do not want to say.

Tell me.
We're friends.

Are you sure
you want to know?

Yes. What do you
like to eat?

Ok, but let's go
where we can
be alone.

Fine with me.

The cat and the rat
went to the beach.

I know! You like
to eat fish.

Not at all.
It's much better than fish.

Tell me.
I just have to know.

Come closer,
and I will tell you.

Yes?

What I like is...

[Slurp]

Cheese!

I love cheese!

So do i!
I have some here.

Hooray!
Now we are friends!

So they sat on the beach
and ate the cheese.

And that was that.

Very sweet.

I didn't
like the end.
It was dumb.

Then, you tell one.

Easy as pie!

And I'll make it
scary, too.

One day a monster
came out of the sea.

He had big, yellow eyes.

He had sharp, green teeth.

He had long, black claws,

And he was really mean.

It was lunch time,
and he was hungry.

On the beach,
he saw some cheese.

"Bleh!" He said.
"I hate cheese!"

And he went on by.

Soon he came to a rat.

The rat didn't hear him.
He was asleep.

"Too small."

And he went on by.

Down the beach,
he came upon a cat.

But monsters
don't eat cats,

So he went on by.

Monsters really like
kids on toast.

"There must be some
tasty kids on this beach."

Very soon, he saw some.

"Yum!

"Two boys and a girl,

"Nice and juicy!

"I'll have them
for lunch.

But if they see me,
they'll run away."

So the monster
was very quiet.

He tiptoed up
behind the kids.

They did not hear him.

They were
telling stories.

He crept closer...

And closer...

Look out!

Help!

He's going to eat us!

Lolly and sam
jumped 10 feet.

There was no monster,

No monster at all.

Spider
laughed himself silly.

Ha ha ho ho!

Did you like it?

Oh, yes!

But we were not
scared a bit.

How about a swim?

That's a fine idea.
That's a fine idea.

And that was that.

"And that was that."

Spider, sam, and lolly
sure are great storytellers.

Spider almost had me convinced
about that monster.

Big eyes, sharp green teeth,
black claws.

I prefer
cheese and fruit

To children on toast.

Everybody knows there aren't
any real ocean monsters,

But that's the great thing
about storytelling.

You can make up anything--

Fire-breathing dragons,
sinister magicians,

Beautiful princesses.

I can imagine
a scary monster right now,

With cold paws
and sharp fangs,

Scales
and poisonous breath.

I can almost feel him
breathing on my neck.

Storytelling
is all in your mind.

You know the monster
really can't get you.

Ooh!

Mruphmr?

What?

Time?

What time is it?

Time to come back
to reality.

It's about 1:45.

Thanks.

You're welcome.

It goes to show you

How your imagination
can run away with you.

I turned that scuba diver
into a scary monster.

You never know what the ocean
will bring in.

Let's see
what's there today.

I think I see a note
in this bottle.

I've probably been reading
too many stories.

No, wait!

There is a note
in here!

I wonder what it says.

Let's see.

See a what?

What did you see?

I wonder
who wrote this.

Was it
a shipwrecked sailor

Or the captain
of a whaling vessel?

Maybe some kids
like spider, sam, and lolly

Wrote it for fun.

Maybe I'm the first person
to lay eyes on this

Since the tall ships
sailed the seas.

Back then, sailors sang stories
while they worked.

Sometimes they still do.

"Storm is worse.
No land.

Ship leaking."

I still wonder
who wrote this.

Was it an explorer
whose ship was lost,

Or a sailor who loves
spinning yarns?

We use words to build
castles in the air.

You can also use sand
to build castles.

People tell fantastic stories
with sand sculptures.

You only need
a headful of ideas

And a beachful of sand.

Wow!
Look at this!

I think I see a dinosaur
over here on the beach.

Really!

A dinosaur
on the beach?

Yeah.

What kind is he?

A triceratops.

What's his name?

Doobie.

Great name!

What's he doing
on the beach?

He wants to get
a tan.

So you guys are just
finishing him?

Right. We're
almost complete.

Come here.
Look at this.

Seashells for
his eyes and teeth.

That's great detail.

Thank you.

What does he eat?

Seaweed,
of course.

Well, he's gorgeous.
He's absolutely beautiful.

Thank you.

Look what's over here.

I think we have
a dolphin.

Hi, guys.

Hi. Hi.

Who's this?
Flipper?

No, rodney.

Rodney
the dolphin, huh?

He's great.
Can I pet him?

He's real smooth.

I love
the dorsal fin.

It was hard
to do.

Do you mind
that the sea

Just washes it away?

No, because
the finished product
is really pretty.

What will you do
with him?

We'll take him
to sea world

To star
with shamu.

He's going to be
a star, huh?

Well, good luck,
rodney.

Bye-bye. Bye.

Will somebody
please tell me

What this thing is?

It's a school.

It's called
the laddi farm
and academy.

It's in ramona,
california.

What's it doing
on the beach?

We wanted
a vacation,

So we
moved it.

How do you get

All the colors
in the sand here?

Sand takes
spray paint
very well.

It should last
until high tide.

Here's
a swimming pool.

How did you
color it?

We used
powdered paint

And put flowers
around it.

There are deep
and shallow ends.

The laddi school
in ramona, california.

It's gorgeous.
Thanks very much.

Thank you.

Bye-bye.

Some people can create
a whole world

Out of thin air.

They're actors
who improvise.

They make up a story
as they go along

With help
from the audience.

Storytelling can really
be anything, can't it?

If you liked this book,
three by the sea,

You might like
these three,

But don't take
my word for it.

Do you like to take trips
in your imagination?

My name is
wendy zuwaski.

I read regards to
the man in the moon.

It's about a little boy

Whose father has
a junk yard.

They make
pretend vehicles

Out of
the neat junk.

My favorite picture was
the asteroids falling down.

They called them
big monsters.

They were going over
and under and upside-down.

At the end, all their friends
stopped laughing,

And they made
their own neat vehicles.

If your friends
give you a hard time

About using your imagination,
pass them this book.

It would teach them
a lesson.

Hi, everybody.
My name is cecilia bobo.

Do you have
a best friend?

If you do, read
frog and toad together.

It's about two animals
and what good friends they are

And how they share friendship,
go on adventures,

And teach
each other lessons.

I liked the part
about the cookies.

Toad baked some cookies
and brought it to frog.

They started
eating the cookies.

After a while,
they tried to stop,

But they couldn't.

Frog let
the birds eat it,

And toad said, "I'm going home
to bake a cake."

Anybody who has
a best friend

Will get a kick
out of this book.

You should go to
your nearest library and get it.

Hi, I'm carrie.

You can use
your imagination to take a trip.

That's what
this book's about.

It's called come away
from the water, shirley.

Shirley's family
goes to the beach.

Her parents
just sit around.

Shirley uses
her imagination.

She goes on
a pirate ship,

She digs for treasures,
and she finds treasures.

She fights with pirates,
and a little dog helps her.

Most of you

Would like this book
because it shows

You cn use
your imagination with yourself.

There are stories
everywhere you look,

If you look
in the right way.

The beach is like
a page in a giant book,

New stories every day,
new castles to build

And to be washed away
by the tide.

I still want to know
who wrote this.

What did you see?

Were dolphins
coming to save the ship?

Maybe a huge shark.

Maybe even a mermaid.

We'll never know.

Anyway, whoever it was
or whatever it was,

I think I'll add
my own chapter to the book.

I wonder if anybody else
will find it

After I've thrown it
back in.

You never know.

Well, see you next time.
