[whistle toots]

[bouncy music]

♪ ♪

children:

♪ They're two, they're four ♪

♪ They're six, they're eight ♪

♪ Shunting trucks

and hauling freight ♪

♪ Red and green

and brown and blue ♪

♪ They're the really

useful crew ♪

♪ All with different roles

to play ♪

♪ Round Tidmouth Sheds

or far away ♪

♪ Down the hills

and round the bends ♪

♪ Thomas and his friends ♪

♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

[electronic music]

male narrator:

Engine of the future.

♪ ♪

male narrator: One day...

[train whooshing]

Something very strange

came hurrying over

the Vicarstown Bridge

and onto the Island of Sodor.

[train whooshing]

- Was that an engine?

- I don't know.

Maybe some kind of plane

without wings.

♪ ♪

- Oh?

♪ ♪

[horn honks]

[train whooshing]

- [exclaims]

♪ ♪

- [exclaiming]

What was that?

[yells]

Where's my hat?

♪ ♪

- [moos]

♪ ♪

- Oh.

♪ ♪

Great Scott!

Hello there!

And who, may I ask, are you?

- Hello, sir.

My name is Hugo.

I'm a rail zeppelin.

My driver has been thinking

you would like to see me.

- Franz!

[both chuckle]

Hello!

What a surprise!

- Hello, Sir Robert!

I thought you would enjoy

meeting Hugo!

I know how much you like

interesting engines.

- I'm powered by diesel,

but my engine drives

the propeller at the back.

- Well, he certainly is

impressive to look at, Franz,

but I can't really form

a proper opinion

until Hugo takes me out

for a spin.

- Not a problem, Sir Robert!

Welcome aboard!

[upbeat music]

[horn honks]

[engine whirring]

♪ ♪

narrator: Word of the new

arrival travelled quickly

across the island.

- I heard he doesn't really look

like an engine at all.

- I know!

He even has a propeller.

- A propeller?

- Is he still up at the castle?

- [gasps]

A castle?

[whistle toots]

- Ah, Thomas!

Will you please take me up

to Ulfstead Castle?

There's still a bit of time

before your next

scheduled service.

- Yes, sir.

Of course.

- [grunting]

Apparently there's

an extraordinary new engine

up there.

[laughs]

You never know when a new idea

will come along

that could improve the railway.

[whistle trills]

[whistle toots]

♪ ♪

- Improve the railway?

What did Sir Topham Hatt mean

by that?

- Hmm.

I don't know.

[whistle toots]

But I think there are some cars

that need to be delivered

to Ulfstead!

[whistle trills]

- And I'm sure my passengers

would like to visit!

[whistle toots]

- Oh, and I'm coming too!

♪ ♪

Just because!

[horn honks]

[laughs]

♪ ♪

- Oh, my word!

- You're going to love this,

Sir Topham.

- [chuckles]

- Hugo is incredible.

♪ ♪

[horn honks]

[propeller whirring]

[both laugh]

- Wow!

He's amazing!

- Oh, Thomas,

that Hugo is the engine

of the future!

♪ ♪

- Wow!

What a splendid engine!

- [gasps]

Was that him?

- Huh?

Was who him?

I--I think I missed it!

No!

I missed it!

♪ ♪

- Do you think he's come to

improve the railway, Stephen?

- [laughs]

Yes!

Engines like Hugo will be

taking over everything!

I've seen it before.

Horses used to pull cars

and coaches,

and then along came

steam engines!

And steam was king

until the diesels arrived.

But now here's Hugo, and

everything is bound to change

all over again.

- [sighs]

Such a smooth ride.

And so incredibly fast.

♪ ♪

narrator: That night

at Tidmouth Sheds, the engines

discussed the situation.

- And Stephen says we'll all be

replaced by engines like Hugo!

- But I don't want

to be replaced!

I love working on

the railway.

- So do I.

It's the only thing

I know how to do.

- We'll be sent

to the scrapyard.

- Well, he won't be

replacing me!

- Hello!

[chuckles]

Is there space in this shed

for one more engine?

- Sorry, but these sheds

are full.

- That's right!

This shed is for steam engines!

- Actually, Hugo,

I'm going out to take

the mail train now.

You can sleep in my berth

if you want to.

- No, he can't, Percy!

He is trying to replace us.

- Please, don't be worrying

about me.

I will find another place

to sleep.

[instrumental music]

♪ ♪

narrator: So Hugo spent

the night at the shunting yard,

but still the other engines

continued being unfriendly.

- Hmm.

♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

♪ ♪

- Why is everyone

being so mean to me?

- Because you're trying

to replace us!

- No, I'm not.

I haven't come to take over

from anyone.

- But you are very fast

and modern, Hugo!

- Stephen says

you can do anything.

- [sighs]

This is not true either.

I don't even have

a coupling hook,

so I cannot pull cars

or coaches.

both: Oh.

- And everyone worries about

my dangerous propeller,

even though

I'm being very careful

when I come into a station.

♪ ♪

- Thomas,

we've hurt Hugo's feelings,

and we have to do something

to make him feel better.

- But everybody hurt

his feelings,

not just us!

- Then everybody will have

to make him feel better!

♪ ♪

- Ah.

Good morning, Hugo!

And how are you this morning?

- Happier to see you, sir.

- I have some very important

passengers here, Hugo.

They were hoping you might

take them for a little trip

to Vicarstown and back.

[whistle toots]

[whistle trills]

- Huh?

[yells]

narrator: All day long

Hugo carried happy passengers

up and down the railway...

♪ ♪

- [laughs]

It's almost like flying.

- Oh, it's more fun than that.

narrator:

But Hugo was still sad

because of how the other

engines had been treating him.

♪ ♪

That evening when he arrived

back at Knapford,

Hugo was in

for a very big surprise.

[all cheering]

- Oh.

[laughs]

- Hooray!

[all cheering]

- What's all this?

Some kind of party?

- Yes, sir,

a welcoming party for Hugo!

- We're very sorry we were

mean to you, Hugo,

and tonight we hope

you will sleep in our shed!

- Three steam cheers for Hugo!

Pip, pip.

[whistles toot]

Pip, pip.

[whistles toot]

Pip, pip.

[whistles toot]

[horn honks]

- Hooray!

[all cheering]

- Thank you.

This is all very friendly,

very friendly indeed!

[laughs]

♪ ♪

narrator: That night,

all the engines were very happy

to let their new friend Hugo

join them in the big shed

at Tidmouth.

♪ ♪

[bouncy music]

♪ ♪

[children singing]

♪ ♪

[whistle trills]
