- Come on, everybody.

Let's get started.

- All right. - Man, where's Scott?

- In the tool shed. - Okay.

Hi, Scott. - Hey, guys.

Here's a trash bag for you, Mario.

- Thank you.

- And one for you, Kami.

- Thanks, Scott.

- You'll need a trash bag too, Angela.

- Okay.

- Hey, instead of just picking up trash,

why don't we make it a race?

- [Kids] Yeah.

- A race?

Do we have to?

- Come on, it'll be fun.

Barney, would you please start the race for us?

- Oh, I'd be happy to.

On your marks, get set, go.

(meandering music)

Oh, it looks like you are having lots of fun

running around the park.

What kind of game were you playing?

- I saw some litter on the ground,

so I thought we should pick it up.

- Then we decided to make it a race.

- Now let's see who found the most.

- Oh, that's a good idea, Scott.

Let's go check it out.

Oh, you found a lot, Scott.

- Wow. - Good job.

- Check this out. - Okay.

Oh, you found even more.

Way to go, Mario. - Yeah.

- Wow. - Whoa.

- You found the most so far.

Great job, Angela.

Oh, and how much did you find, Kami?

(slide whistle blowing)

- I had kind of a hard time.

- Oh, that's okay.

I'm sure you tried your best.

- [Kids] Yeah.

- So, what do you want to do now?

We could have another race or play soccer.

Or do some more cleanup in the park.

- You sure like to keep busy.

- Well, it sort of reminds me of watching little ants go by.

Always moving and always working.

- Do I remind you of an ant?

- Well, with those pretend antennas, you really do.

- How about me?

- And me?

- Do I look like an ant?

- Well, you all do.

You look like a whole line of marching ants.

(Barney scat singing)

- [Barney] Oh now, you don't look like an ant anymore.

- But I still feel like an ant.

The little ant at the end of the line.

- Aw.

What's wrong, Kami?

- It seems that I'm always the last in line

just because I'm little.

- But you're growing every day.

You won't always be the last in line.

- I know.

But today, I think I'll just play by myself.

- Kami's feeling sad, isn't she?

- Yes, she is, Scott.

And I think we should do something to help cheer her up.

- Well, what can we do?

We need a really good idea.

- Well, ideas come from in here.

But sometimes, it helps to have a special place

to sit and think.

- Like the Idea Bench.

Come on.

- Okay.

♪ I'd like to think of something ♪

♪ I never thought before

♪ If it doesn't happen right away ♪

♪ I'll think a little more

♪ I'll sit a little while

♪ Imagine what could be

- I've got an idea.

- Come on, let's go tell Mario and Angela.

- Okay.

(Barney humming) (kids chattering)

Oh, hi, Kami. - Oh hi, Kami.

- Hey, Kami. - Hi.

- Oh hi, guys.

- Oh, Kami, I know you're feeling sad

about being the last in line, but you know what,

a caboose is always the last in line too,

and it's the most important car in a train.

- It is?


- That's right.

Because the caboose is where the train's conductor rides.

And it's the conductor's job to take care of the train

and tell everyone what to do.

And that's very important.

- So I thought it would be fun

if you could be the conductor for the day.

- A conductor, me?

- Sure, here's your conductor's vest.

- Oh, that's pretty. - Look at that, Kami.

- Thank you. - You're welcome.

- And your conductor's hat.

- Oh, that fits really well too.

You look great.

Oh, and here's the kind of watch

that conductors used a long time ago.

You can open it if you like.

(watch ticking)

- Wow, it ticks.

- [Barney] Oh boy.

- So, what does a conductor do?

- Oh well, lots of things.

He counts the cars on the train

from the engine to the caboose.

- [Kids] One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

- Very good.

And then, when it's time to go,

he looks at his watch and calls all aboard.

- Like this?

All aboard.

- [Barney] Just like that.

Very nice, Kami.

- Look at that toy train. - Oh yeah.

Just like a real train, it has to stay on the tracks.

See?

Some trains carry people in passenger cars like that.

- See the windows? - And other cars

carry all sorts of things in their box cars.

- [Kami] They sort of look like boxes with wheels.

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ A train rides on a railroad track ♪

♪ It makes a sound like clickety-clack ♪

♪ It blows a great big whistle too ♪

♪ That makes a sound like this

♪ Woo, woo

♪ Chug-A-Chug, woo, woo

♪ The train goes rolling through ♪

♪ Chug-A-Chug, clickety-clack

♪ The caboose rides in the back ♪

(train whistle blowing)

- [Mario] There's a toy train going over a bridge.

- [Scott] And now it's coming out of a tunnel.

- [Barney] Oh, wow.

- [Kami] There it goes into a tunnel.

- Oh, bye-bye.

Oh.

And look.

There goes the very important caboose.

And it's always the last in line.

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ Trains they have an engineer

♪ Who rides in the engine so they can steer ♪

♪ There's even a conductor too

♪ Who always shouts all aboard to you ♪

♪ Chug-A-Chug, woo, woo

♪ The train goes rolling through ♪

- [Barney] Oh yeah.

♪ Chug-A-Chug, clickety-clack

♪ The caboose rides in the back ♪

- Whoa.

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ Chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, woo, woo ♪

♪ A train rides on a railroad track ♪

♪ The engine in the front

♪ The caboose in the back

♪ And when you see a train go by ♪

♪ Make sure you stop and wave, say hi ♪

♪ Chug-A-Chug, chug-a-chug, woo, woo, woo, woo ♪

♪ The train goes rolling through ♪

♪ Chug-A-Chug, chug-a-chug, clickety-clack, clickety-clack ♪

♪ The caboose rides in the back ♪

- That was so much fun.

You know, our caboose wasn't always here in the park.

It used to be part of a real train.

- Whoa. - That's really cool.

- If you think about it, you can imagine what it looked like

at the end of a long, long train.

The conductor would call all aboard.

- All aboard.

- You're getting good at that.

- She is.

And up front in the engine,

the engineer would blow the whistle.

(train whistle blowing)


Then, off they'd go, hurrying down the tracks.

Riding past cities and trees and sparkling blue lakes

and great, big mountains.

And after working hard for years and years,

this caboose ended up in our park for everyone to enjoy.

- And I'm glad it did. - Yeah.

- Me too.

Kami, since you're the conductor for the day,

what would you like us to do next?

- I think we should clean up that old caboose

so it'll look just like new, okay?

- Oh, I think that's a stupendous idea.

Let's go.

(Barney humming)

- It's fun to work on a train.

And it's fun to pretend.

Can you pretend to be a choo-choo train?

(train whistles blowing) (children giggling)

- Wait for me.

- Oh yeah.

- Hm, I think it's time for a break.

- It's good to have a break after hard work.

So, are you having a good time being a conductor, Kami?

- I sure am.

- [Barney] Oh, good.

- Barney, what's this thing the conductor's holding?

- Oh, well, that's a railroad lantern.

Sort of like this one.

White.

Green.

And red.

- Whoa. - Oh.

At night, the conductor would use all those colors

to tell the train's engineer different things.

But during the day, the conductor would use colored flags

like these instead.

A red flag means stop the train.

A white flag means go.

And a green flag means go slowly.

(kids chattering)

Red flag, stop.

Very nice, guys.

White flag, go.

Red flag.

Oh, very nice.

White flag, go.

Green flag, go slowly.

Very nice.

Okay, white flag, go.

That was excellent.

You guys are really good at that game.

Oh boy.

- These little flags sure are a lot of fun.

- [Barney] Uh-huh.

- I'll bet big flags would be even more fun.

- Yeah.

- Why don't we make some of our own?

- Yeah, we could make them in all different colors.

- I think that's a great idea.

Oh, let me just put these down here.

Oh, this is going to be so much fun.

First, take some tissue paper

and choose a color for your flag.

- [Scott] Green's one of my favorite colors.

- Me too. - They're gonna look great.

- Yeah. - Now, cut out a square

or a triangle.

That's really good, Mario. - Thank you.

- [Barney] Make sure that a grownup helps you

when you use your scissors.

Next, tape or glue your flag to a stick.

- [Angela] I used to make 'em at my school.

- And you're done. - Oh good job, Scott.

Pretty cool, huh?

- Oh, very nice.

- We even made one for you.

- Oh, purple.

Thank you.

- So, what do you think, Barney?

- Well, I think with so many beautiful flags,

we should have a parade.

- [Kids] Yeah!

- Oh, what a fun idea.

- [Barney] Okay.

(Barney humming)

- That was great.

- You know, if we were going to raise our flags

as high as they can go, we should put them upstairs.

- Yeah, I'll help you. - Okay.

But be careful going up the steps.

There are a lot of them.

You know, in a caboose, the upstairs is called the cupola.

- A cupola?

- That's right, Kami.

And when the conductor sits in the cupola,

he can look out these windows and see the whole train.

- And from up here, I can see the whole park.

- Let's see if she can see us. Come on.

- Okay.

Let's go.

(Barney humming)

- [Mario] Yoo-hoo, Angela, I'm down here.

- Angela, can you see us down here?

- I can see all of you.

Ew, and I also see some dirt.

I think these windows need some washing.

- Oh, and what does the conductor think?

- I think it's time to clean all the windows just about now.

- Okay.

Oh, goodie.

- [Kids] Boo.

- Whoa.

(whimsical music)

- [Both] Whoa.

(both giggling)

- I need the bottle.

- Which bottle?

- The bottle you're holding.

- Oh, okay.

(both laughing)

So that's why you need it.

- I'm not sure if I'm more tired from working or laughing.

- But all of your hard work was worth it.

Just look at that nice, clean caboose.

- [Kids] Wow.

- And just think, this was all your idea, Conductor Kami.

- But I couldn't have done it without everyone's help.

- Oh, that's right.

It took all of you working together to get the job done.

Sort of the way it takes a lot

of train cars working together to make a train.

Each one is different and each one is special.

From the very first in line to the last in line.

Kami.

- I was sad about being last in line,

but you helped me feel happy again.

- Now that I've seen how much fun it can be,

I want to be last in line tomorrow.

- No, I do.

- And so do I.

- Well, you can probably all take turns,

if it's okay with Conductor Kami.

- It's okay with me.

Thank you for making this such a good day, Barney.

- Oh, you're welcome, Kami.

It was a fun day for all of us.

Of course, every day can be fun

if you spend it with people you love.

(Barney humming)
