Oh!

- Hey there, Barney!

- My my.

Oh okay, yeah. All right, hey!

Okay, good dogs. Good dogs.

Yeah, we're friends.

We're friends, we're cool.

We're all good! You can trust me.

- Okay.

- [BARNEY CHUCKLES]

Leave it.

Come on, boys. Supper time.

[BARNEY WHISTLES]

Thanks.

- Good day for it.

- Yeah.

Some say.

You finished your route?

Yeah, just in time for dinner.

Feel like a beer later?

Sure.

- Sure thing.

- All right.

I, uh

[BARNEY SIGHS]

I was thinking of asking

Max to join us as well.

Yeah, maybe another night then.

All I want is for the four

of us to be together again.

It's not gonna happen, Barney.

Ahhh.

Yeah. That's some good boys, huh? Hmmm?

[BARNEY CHUCKLES] Let

me get that off of you.

Come here. Atta boy.

Okay, let's have some dinner.

Come on in, my beauties.

Let's go, let's go!

[BARNEY LAUGHS]

Ahh.

Good day for it.

So

Who's good enough for a cookie, huh?

SARAH: Hikers spotted him this morning.

Dogs were with him. Uniforms

couldn't get close enough to get an ID.

His dogs are still protecting him.

They could've been here all night.

I'm not sure they'll let me

get close enough to get my exam.

I've got an idea.

[CHARLIE WHISTLES] Rex.

[REX SNIFFING]

Rex, lead.

Come.

[SARAH CHUCKLES]

Sit.

Stay.

Rex, with me.

[REX SNIFFS]

The dogs are well-trained.

They shouldn't give

you any more problems.

What have you got, pal?

Hold.

A wallet.

Good find, partner.

Barney Chafe.

Looks like his dogs

dragged him from the water.

How long do you figure

he's been dead for?

Rigor's set in. He's cold.

I'd say at least eight hours.

A drowning, you think?

No froth in or around his mouth or nose.

I mean, these contusions and lacerations

are consistent with blows

to the side of his head.

[REX BARKS]

Is it him?

Is it Barney?

News travels fast in this town.

MAX: His dogs are right there, Patti.

STEVEN: It's him.

That's what he was wearing

when I saw him yesterday.

CHARLIE: I'm sorry, folks.

I'm going to have to stop you there.

This is an active crime scene.

- PATTI: Crime scene?

- Come with me, please.

- What happened?

- CHARLIE: We don't know yet.

Are any of you family?

Uh, friends.

He doesn't have any family.

He lives alone with his dogs.

[REX BARKS]

I'm Max.

Patti.

Steven.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

If you give the officer

your information,

as soon as we find out

anything, we'll let you know.

Excuse me.

- [REX BARKS]

- Come on, partner.

[SHIP HORN BLARES]

- DONOVAN: Jesse.

- Hey!

Charlie and Sarah have

a homicide in Tors Cove.

The victim's name is Barney Chafe.

Barney Chafe. Okay.

37 years old.

Writer of historical non-fiction.

Looks like all of his books

are for a small local press.

Right. Charlie said

that he has no family

but he found a business card for

an estate attorney in his pocket.

Too young to have a will drawn up.

Maybe he inherited something?

It's possible but I want you to look

into his financial situation for me.

And I'm gonna try to get

in touch with the lawyer.

- Yeah, sure thing.

- Thanks.

Hey, boss. Um

No word yet on my detective exam?

You'll be the first to know.

Yeah.

[SOFT GUITAR AND FIDDLE]

[CHARLIE WHISTLES]

No, you can't go in right now.

[FINGERS SNAP] Go on!

[DOGS WHINE]

Down.

Rex, you're with me.

[REX BARKING]

- Hey!

- Police. Who are you?

I'm Rudy.

Barney's dog sitter.

Where's Barney?

There's been an incident.

I'm afraid Barney is dead.

- Dead?

- Mm-hmm.

Uh How?

Well, that's what we're investigating.

Detective Hudson.

My partner, Rex.

- Hi, Rex.

- [REX BARKS]

Uh

Hey, where are Barney's

dogs? Are they all right?

They're all right. They're outside.

When was the last time you saw Barney?

Um, would have been

yesterday afternoon after I finished up.

- He seemed fine.

- And where were you last night?

Am I a suspect here, or ?

I saw a movie in town.

- Actually, I still have the

- [REX GROWLS]

Easy.

movie ticket,

um, if it helps.

Do you mind if I feed them?

They probably starving.

Yeah.

Go ahead.

RUDY: Good boy.

Hungry, aren't you?

You like them numnums?

Good boy.

Good boy. That taste good?

Is that some tasty chow?

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

[REX SNIFFS]

[REX SNIFFING]

[REX BARKS]

[REX SNIFFING]

Well, that looks like blood.

- [REX BARKS]

- Yeah, we'll get Sarah down here.

Good job, partner.

I'd love to be of assistance

but my clients are a

matter of confidentiality.

- Ah.

- Well, this client

is dead.

Barney's dead?

Oh, that's terrible!

Such a young man!

Yes, which is why I found it odd

that he would have an estate lawyer.

[ELLEN CHUCKLES]

You know perfectly well, Superintendent,

that client privilege survives

even the client himself.

Of course.

But, generally speaking

In general terms, yes.

It is unusual for a young

person to be so, proactive

in end-of-life planning.

Especially if they're childless.

But, I personally

advise everyone to do it.

Of course.

I assume you've

I'm good.

Good for you!

Well, I wouldn't be speaking out of turn

if I told you that Barney

Chafe was eccentric.

I mean, who has three dogs?

- So, he was a real dog lover.

- [ELLEN EXHALES]

You don't know the half of it.

He left very particular

instructions for them

in the event of his death.

SARAH: Based on the ABO test,

this is likely Barney's blood.

I'd say we're looking

at castoff spatter here.

And in the grass.

So, Barney was k*lled here.

Seems likely. Here can

you just stand over here?

Yeah, right over here.

[REX SNIFFING]

Based on Barney's lacerations

and the spatter patterns,

I think our victim was

facing his assailant.

Suggesting that Barney

knew his attacker.

Right.

[REX SNIFFING]

So, he was struck on the

left side of the head

- By the assailant's right.

- Yeah.

And the first blow

wouldn't have cast off blood

- but the second and third

- [REX SNIFFING]

If he was down on the

ground at that point

- [REX BARKS]

- What have you got?

Here.

Ah, what is that?

I don't know.

This edge was broken off something.

Looks like there's a

bit of blood on it, too.

So, Barney was k*lled here

and someone moved him to the water.

The k*ller was trying to

make it look like a drowning.

Oh.

[REX BARKS]

Yeah.

[REX BARKS]

The dogs must have been

inside when it happened.

By the time they got

out, it was too late.

[REX BARKING]

[PHONE BUZZING]

- Hey, Joe.

- Charlie.

I just met with Barney's

lawyer, Ellen Parker.

Apparently your victim

was a millionaire.

- Really? Barney Chafe was rich?

- Mm-hmm.

Wait.

I wonder what his

friends thought of that.

[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]

SARAH: His friends who

were just on the beach?

- Yeah.

- Why would he rip up their picture?

They were pretty distant with

each other when I spoke with them.

So, a recent argument?

Something that drove them all apart?

Yeah or they could have been

in shock from Barney's death.

A m*rder in a town as small as this

had to have shaken them up.

Rex stay here and watch them. Rudy.

You spend much time here?

Yeah, every weekday, from ten to four.

I mean, I love those dogs and honestly,

Barney was just happy for

me to be hanging out with them.

Gave him more time to write.

So, you must know Barney's

friends: Patti, Max, and Steve?

Yeah I know of them.

But honestly, they're not around much.

Do you know what happened between them?

Before my time.

Did Barney have any enemies or,

any problems of any sort?

Not that I know of.

Look, sorry,

Barney kept to himself

and he really loved those dogs.

They were everything to him.

Also, do you mind if I

bring them for a walk?

I want to keep them

on their usual routine.

Yeah, go ahead.

Cool. Hey. [CLICKS TONGUE]

Come on!

Good job! Come on.

Come on, Kona!

Good girl, good girl. Come on.

Detective.

- Hudson, yeah. It's Max, right?

- Uh-huh.

Come on.

Any leads so far?

In cases like this, it's

usually only a matter of time

- before we catch the k*ller.

- That right?

Where were you last night?

Home.

Made myself a sandwich. Watched some TV.

Anyone with you?

Quiet night in.

Oh.

Well, Barney really did keep

this pretty modest, didn't he?

Yeah, he wasn't much of a spender.

He liked his life the way it was.

Mmm.

Any good story as to how

he became so rich so fast?

Hydro company built a dam

near here a while back.

They needed an access road put in. So

Barney let them put it

through his property.

Did money change the friendship?

Not for my part.

You can tell it didn't change Barney.

Did anything happen

between the four of you?

What do you mean? [MAX SIGHS]

Well, I'm

sensing there was a bit of a fall out.

[MAX SIGHS]

Steven and Patti used to be a thing.

I didn't think it was that serious

but it turns out that

Steven was getting ready

to propose to Patti when, well,

Patti and I had a couple

of drinks one night and

I see.

Steven won't forgive us.

Patti can't forgive him

for not forgiving her.

She won't look at me.

Three of us have barely spoken since.

So, what does this

have to do with Barney?

He got tired of being in the middle.

And it broke up the friendship.

Hmm.

So, where do I find Steven?

He lives right next door.

Red house.

You can't miss it.

How long have you and

Barney been neighbours?

Our whole lives.

- He was my best friend.

- Until recently?

- What do you mean?

- Well, the four of you used to be really close.

- Isn't that right?

- Well, Barney and I still were.

Wait, am I a suspect?

Where were you last night?

At home, alone.

- I was reading a book.

- [CHARLIE SIGHS]

That's not an alibi.

[REX BARKS]

[STEVEN SIGHS]

PATTI: Yes.

There was tension between

the four of us but

I'm sure that had nothing to do

with what happened with Barney.

And where were you last night?

I was here, working.

When I finished,

I took a little walk to clear my head.

- Anyone see you?

- No.

Barney was the only friend I had left.

I would never do anything to hurt him.

[REX SNIFFS]

Barney was pretty upset that the

three of you weren't friends anymore.

He hated it.

He wanted to get us all back together.

I guess now he did.

At least for the will reading tomorrow.

[SEAGULLS CRYING]

[WAVES CRASHING]

[BIRDS CHIRPING]

I've known the dogs for a long time.

You think Barney might leave them to me?

Did he ever talk to you about that?

No, but he knows how much I love them.

ELLEN: Hello everyone. I'm Ellen Parker.

I'm Barney's lawyer.

Barney left some instructions in

the event of this sad occasion.

I'm here to relay his wishes.

Hello my squabbling friends.

Well,

if you're watching this I

suppose my time is up.

[PATTI CRIES]

BARNEY: Now.

If my lawyer has done the simple job

- that she has overcharged me for

- [ELLEN CHUCKLES]

then she has gathered my most

beloved companions in this room.

- Duff.

- [DUFF WHINES]

Kona.

[KONA WHINES]

Buster.

[BUSTER WHINES]

You gave me some of the

greatest years of my life.

While the other three of you feuded,

these dogs showed me unconditional love.

And they taught me

how to live in the moment.

[BARNEY CHUCKLES]

They are truly man's best friend.

[REX BARKS]

And so,

I leave my entire estate

to Duff, Kona, and Buster.

- [BARNEY LAUGHS HYSTERICALLY]

- To the dogs?!

[PATTI LAUGHS] That is so, Barney.

Wait what? How can he do that?

[BARNEY CONTINUES LAUGHING]

Okay, settle down now. Settle down now.

Yeah, you know I'm only fooling.

What do these dogs need money for?

What these dogs need now is a good home.

And so,

I'm giving each one of you

a second chance.

I'm leaving my dogs to you.

Oh no.

BARNEY: Duff, will go to Steven.

Kona to Patti.

And Max.

[BARNEY LAUGHS] You'll take Buster.

[BUSTER WHINES]

[BARNEY LAUGHS]

[BUSTER WHINES]

These dogs

are the greatest gift

that I can give you.

If you learn to love them,

you'll find that they unlock

the secrets to happiness.

And

to wealth.

STEVEN: Is that gold?

BARNEY: I've hidden my fortune away.

Let those dogs be your guide.

If you bond with them,

they'll take you to what you need

and show you true riches.

Good luck.

[REX BARKS]

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]

Hmmm.

Have you ever seen

anything like this before?

That is a first.

What happens if they

can't find the gold?

[ELLEN SIGHS]

I've got to look into that.

- It's what he wanted.

- It's what he wanted?

Yeah as if you really cared

about what he wanted.

You wanted! It was always

about money with you.

I don't know why Barney

would split them up.

They're a pack.

Well, unfortunately I

can't do anything about it.

[DOG BARKS]

[DOGS WHINE]

Yeah, I'm going home.

Which one is mine?

This is Duff.

So

the deal is, whoever

bonds with their dog best

just gets the gold?

STEVEN: When we love the dog, we get it.

PATTI: You're both idiots.

It's a treasure hunt.

Whoever finds it first, gets it.

Uh, here, Kona.

Come here, doggie!

Kona, come here!

Hello!

Can't even tell them apart.

Ugh, whatever. Come here.

- Let's go.

- MAX: All right.

Come here, buddy.

- PATTI: Come.

- [DOGS WHINE]

- Ugh!

- Oh my gosh!

- Okay.

- MAX: All right.

PATTI: Come!

- Kona!

- MAX: Come on, Buster!

- Come on!

- MAX: All right,

we've just got to walk together. Okay?

Come on, come on!

- Come on!

- Come, doggie!

Come, doggie! Come, doggie!

- MAX: Come here!

- [REX BARKS]

- Come here, it's okay!

- PATTI: [GROANS]

How much do they eat?

This doesn't make any sense.

[CHARLIE SIGHS]

[REX BARKS]

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

Okay so,

Barney Chafe closed his deal

with Hydro 18 months ago.

It seems that as the interest

rates started going up,

he withdrew a bulk of his

millions in a cashier's check.

Why use it to buy gold?

Well, the value of gold is driven

by confidence in the banking system.

When confidence in the system is shaken,

the value of gold increases.

Yeah, but the question is, what

happens if none of his friends find it?

Well, I don't even think the

lawyer knows what happens.

She had to check precedents.

The money might not go to any of them.

Which makes it hard to find a clear

financial motive for the m*rder.

I might be able to help with that.

It seems that our guy that didn't

have any faith in his banking,

had faith in his email security.

It's an interesting

correspondence between he and Max.

Interesting how?

JESSE: Well, he loaned Max

seventy-five thousand dollars

to open up a B&B in Tors Cove last year.

Two weeks ago, he called it in.

- Did Max respond to the email?

- JESSE: Yeah, he wrote back

expletive, expletive, expletive,

to which Barney replied,

"Well, you can repay it all now

either in cash or the

deed to your property."

That was two days ago.

So, if Barney had lived, Max

would have gone out of business.

- Yeah.

- Rex.

Rex, let's go.

Thanks for coming in. I

know it's a bit of a drive.

- Have a seat.

- Is this going to take long?

I have no idea how long I

can leave Buster alone for.

Mmm.

Did you have any idea

what was in Barney's will?

No.

But I can't say it surprises me.

Patti's right.

It's very Barney.

Huh.

Were you surprised when

Barney threatened to take back

the loan he gave you for your property?

Who told you that?

- Patti?

- Patti?

No, she didn't mention it.

He wanted me to make payments.

We were just negotiating the

amounts. It was all friendly.

Didn't seem too friendly

when he was threatening

to take your property.

That's just how Barney got, okay?

Sometimes he had a temper.

But leave him to sleep on

it and he'd settle down.

We would've worked it out.

Now, you don't have to.

Look,

the loan for my business

was above board, okay?

But nobody was more interested

in Barney's money than Steven.

According to him,

that money was rightfully his.

Hey, Duff! Duff! Buddy!

No. This is not helpful!

- Hey! We talked about this, man!

- [FINGERS SNAP] Down.

[REX GRUNTS]

He listens to you.

Maybe you can tell him to find the gold.

[CHARLIE CHUCKLES] I

can't help you there.

Wow. This is a beautiful place.

Yeah, it's been in my family

for just over a century.

You know, this access road

that the Hydro company

put through Barney's land

that could have just as

easily gone through here.

You've been talking to Max.

Yes. I suppose it could have.

Yeah, then you'd be

the one with millions.

If I was going to k*ll him over it,

I would have done it

before the deal went down.

When's the last time you saw Barney?

On the shore path,

the evening before he was found.

I walked him to his place.

Hey, if you need proof

there were no hard feelings,

it's all on the tape. Buster

was wearing his camera.

What camera?

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]

[REX SNIFFING]

Good find, partner.

Out of the way, pal.

[ROCK SMASHING METAL]

Come on.

[REX GROWLS]

[CHARLIE COUGHS]

Rex, get her out!

[EXTINGUISHER BLASTING]

[CHARLIE COUGHING]

[EXTINGUISHER BLASTING]

[REX BARKING]

[CHARLIE COUGHING]

[REX BARKING]

- Patti are you okay?

- [PATTI GASPS]

- Are you okay?

- [PATTI CRIES]

Can you tell me what happened?

Someone hit me from behind!

- [PATTI COUGHS]

- Did you get a look at them?

No!

And Kona ran off!

She's gone!

Kona's gone!

Patti thinks that Steven

or Max must have taken Kona

to go look for the gold.

I'm going to track Kona's scent. Rex.

Come here.

- Get the scent.

- [REX SNIFFS]

Track it.

Can I give you that?

Hi, Patti.

What do you remember about the att*ck?

Um, I was with Kona. We were bonding.

It was actually very cute.

And then someone just

hit me in the back of the head.

Did your attacker start the fire?

I was using the soldering iron.

I must have knocked

it over in the att*ck.

And it probably started the fire.

And did Kona bark or anything

to warn you about your assailant?

No! I mean can you believe

Barney got her as a guard dog,

just under a year ago after

the breakin in his house.

He already had Duff and Buster

but they were hopeless and

wanted to be friends with everyone

and I guess Kona just

ended up being the same.

Okay, well, Detective Hudson

found this in your studio.

Does that belong to you?

No. That's Barney's.

But how did it end up in your studio?

I took it from his house.

- When?

- When we were there for the will reading.

So, you took the victim's

property from a crime scene?

Well, that's a little dramatic.

I was putting together

a little video collage

for Barney's memorial and

the dogs were always wearing that thing

and I figured that there

was footage of dear Barney.

Did you look at the footage?

I haven't gotten around to it.

[DOGS WHINE]

Hi, Kona.

How'd you get here?

Let's take you back to Patti.

JESSE: Hey. Sarah.

So, Barney's dog cam was on

earlier the night he was k*lled.

It corroborates what Steven told Charlie

about meeting Barney for his walk.

But the footage ends before

they get to the house.

Could it have been deleted?

Unfortunately, there's

no way of knowing.

I can't retrieve any deleted

footage from this model.

Meanwhile, Barney's autopsy

came back with a surprise.

He had a genetic heart condition

called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

It meant he was at risk

of sudden heart failure.

- When was he diagnosed?

- About six months ago.

Wait.

Isn't that when he made his will?

You know, Patti said

that Barney adopted Kona

as a guard dog after a

break-in at his house.

That was about a year ago.

Around the time he

emptied his bank accounts.

But in a town with only half

a dozen break-ins a year.

[JESSE EXHALES]

Someone was looking

for that gold already.

[PHONE CLICKING]

I've got to get this

information to Charlie.

Okay.

[SOFT GUITAR]

[DUFF GRUNTS]

Hey.

Is Patti going to be okay?

- Yeah. Yeah, she is.

- Ah, okay.

My relationship with

Patti is complicated.

- Uh-huh.

- Max didn't help.

And Barney didn't like the fact

that the affair broke

up the friend group.

Honestly, I wish I'd

handled it all differently.

Duff?

Hey, Duff?

Did you see my dog anywhere around here?

Unfortunately, no.

Hey, Rex. Find Duff.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]

Hey!

Duff! Buddy!

- [DUFF WHINES]

- Hey!

Hey, you can't be running

off like that, pal!

Hey? I was worried about you.

Hmm. We found Kona here too.

If I was Barney,

I would have hidden the gold here.

A lot of ground to cover.

Yeah.

This is where the four of

us used to come together.

Max would bring music.

And we'd sit and talk for hours.

[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]

[DOGS BARKING]

[DOGS BARKING]

I thought there'd be

something in the older footage

- since someone was looking.

- There. Pause it.

- [COMPUTER BEEPS]

- What's that?

[COMPUTER WHIRRING]

A metal detector.

With a black plastic sensor ring.

Do you see a model number?

Uh, let me see.

[KEYBOARD CLACKING]

- [COMPUTER WHIRRING]

- I think it's this one.

This model is 126 cm

long and weighs 456 g

which isn't heavy but

if you factor in the torque

and the site of impact on the skull,

this could be what k*lled Barney.

This was hidden right

outside of Barney's house.

I mean someone was using

it to search for the gold.

I'll tell Charlie.

CHARLIE: Are the dogs inside?

Rudy offered to take them for a walk.

It was cute! They were all so, happy

to be together again as a group.

[REX WHINES]

There's something I wanted to

ask all three of you together.

Barney never told you that

he'd purchased the gold?

No.

STEVEN: Though it does

- sound like something he'd do.

- [PATTI CHUCKLES]

He loves treasure hunt stories.

Remember that scavenger hunt he

did for my birthday that time?

[THE FRIENDS CHUCKLE]

I'm glad you're all right.

Thank you.

Me too.

I, uh

I would hate if

anything happened to you.

[REX WHINES]

I lied about where I was

the night Barney d*ed.

I wasn't in my studio.

I was out walking. Near Steven's.

I do that sometimes

when I'm missing him.

Was he there?

Yeah.

All the lights were on and

I saw him in there.

Just like you said.

PATTI: I really regret not going in.

I actually made a phone call that night.

To Max.

He answered and I could

hear that dumb show he

likes in the background.

That was you?

I wanted to talk to you but I

I didn't know what to say.

So I hung up.

Wait, I looked out the

window after I hung up

and I saw Patti walking down

the road towards her place.

CHARLIE: Wait, so,

you're telling me that you

all actually do have alibis

for the night of the m*rder.

I guess we do!

I think I need to find Rudy

and those dogs. Come on, pal.

Hey, Jesse.

I don't think that

any of Barney's friends

knew about the gold.

So, who did?

Well, I know of one person:

Ellen Parker, the estate lawyer.

Okay, so, you think she

brokered the gold purchase?

Pull the FINTRAC report

for the gold purchase.

See if there's any broker listed.

And then I want you to check

Ellen Parker's activities

the night of the m*rder.

See if she paid Tors Cove a visit.

Yeah. Yeah, I'm on it. Charlie, listen,

I checked the CCTV from

the cinema that night.

Rudy wasn't on it,

- at all.

- That's interesting.

Thank you, Jesse.

We know that you brokered Barney

Chafe's gold purchase a year ago.

That was perfectly legal.

Was it legal for you to tell

someone that he was in possession

of over two million

dollars worth of gold?

That would be unethical.

We know that someone's

been looking for that gold.

Are you accusing me, Superintendent?

Because Barney could have

told any number of people.

You know, that's true.

So, where were you the

night of the m*rder?

[ELLEN SCOFFS] I can't

believe you're asking me that!

You know what, that's okay.

You don't have to answer.

Because we know that you spent

36 dollars at the movies that night.

- [ELLEN SCOFFS] This is ridiculous.

- You bought two tickets.

- Who did you go with?

- A friend.

- I need a name.

- [ELLEN STAMMERS]

No answer again.

You bought two tickets

to two different movies, Ellen.

- [ELLEN SIGHS]

- That is strange.

Why did you do that?

You weren't buying movie

tickets were you, Ellen?

You were buying an alibi.

[ELLEN SIGHS]

- [DOGS BARKING]

- RUDY: Go find it!

Come on!

Buster!

Duff!

Kona! Come on, find the gold!

Rudy!

You know where to look! Come on!

[REX BARKING]

What are you doing here?

Rudy, I was going to ask

the same thing of you.

[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]

I didn't know about the gold.

When my team starts looking into this,

are we going to find a connection

between you and Ellen Parker?

You've been searching for the gold.

You were outside Barney's

house with a metal detector

- and he caught you.

- No!

He threatened to fire you,

- turn you in to the police.

- I told you,

- I was in St. John's!

- You were caught.

- You panicked.

- No!

You hit him with the metal detector.

- That's not true!

- Rudy.

I know you weren't at

the movies that night.

You weren't on the CCTV.

It's it's

That doesn't mean I k*lled him!

- Ellen Parker tell you about the gold?

- No!

I found out about it through

the will like everyone else.

And even after Barney was dead,

you had to keep looking for it.

You went after Patti. You took Kona.

She led you down here. That's

why you're here right now.

[PHONE BUZZING]

Hudson.

Got it, thanks.

And your lawyer friend just gave you up.

It's over, Rudy.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

[REX BARKING]

[RUDY GRUNTS]

[REX SNARLING]

Ughh!

Stay down, Rudy.

[Kn*fe RINGING]

Yagghh!

- Ughh!

- [REX BARKING]

- Drop it.

- [REX BARKING]

- [CUFFS RATCHETING]

- Good job, partner.

[INDISTINCT POLICE RADIO]

PATTI: It was Rudy?

STEVEN: The dogsitter?

CHARLIE: Can't argue with the evidence.

MAX: Barney trusted him.

How could Rudy do that to him?

Why did he bring the dogs here?

They led him here.

The dogs always came here

if they got to lead the walk.

You think it was Barney

that taught them to do that?

Because it was our place.

You think he hid the

treasure by our old hangout?

Barney said that

you bond with the dogs,

they'll give you what you need.

They'll lead you to true riches.

I think I have an idea

what he wanted for you.

[CHARLIE WHISTLES]

Friendship.

[LIVELY MUSIC]

[DOGS BARKING]

- PATTI: Good girl.

- Hey!

What do you have?

MAX: Move this, move this.

- PATTI: Oh my God!

- Max [LAUGHING]: Ohhhh!

- [REX BARKS]

- PATTI: Kona!

Good!

[MEN GRUNTING]

Steven [LAUGHING]: All right!

Sorry.

Hey.

You two are meant for each other.

Don't wait until it's too late, okay?

Come here.

Ready?

Yeah.

[STEVEN EXHALES]

PATTI: What? Rocks?

Where's the gold?

[DOGS WHINE]

What is this?

[REX BARKS]

Well, done!

[BARNEY LAUGHS]

If you're watching this,

that means you three idiots have

finally managed to do something together.

[PATTI CHUCKLES]

I hope you're not mad.

But I

I gave the gold to a

dog rescue organization.

[REX BARKS]

They needed it.

And what you need is friendship.

Friendship is the real treasure.

And if you haven't

figured that out by now,

there ain't no amount

of money in the world

that's gonna help you.

I'm leaving this estate and my

property to the three of you.

Please keep the dogs together.

A pack doesn't like to be broken up.

You're a good girl!

That's true.

[REX WHINES]

Hey, Charlie.

Did you get your confession?

I didn't even get the cuffs on

before he started

pinning it on the lawyer.

Ellen Parker under arrest?

Yeah, well, she's already

throwing Rudy under the bus.

Refuses to admit that she was the one

who set the whole thing in motion.

I guess the jury will figure it out.

They found the gold?

Something like that.

But Barney did get what

he wanted in the end.

Wow! That's quite a feat

to pull off, after death.

Yeah.

So, speaking of getting what you want

[WHISPERING] Hey!

Here you go!

Go on!

Give it to Jesse!

Yeah.

Good boy.

What what is this?

What, did I did I pass? Did I fail?

- No, I passed?

- Check it out!

[JESSE GASPS]

[THEY LAUGH]

Ladies and gentlemen,

allow me to introduce

SJPD's newest detective,

- Jesse Mills!

- [APPLAUSE]

- [JESSE LAUGHS]

- [REX BARKING]

No kidding!

[JESSE LAUGHS]

Congratulations,

Jesse. You deserve this.

- [JESSE SIGHS]

- SARAH: Hey, wait a second!

So, what does this mean?

Are you leaving Major Crimes?

I actually haven't

thought that far ahead.

[REX GROANS]

Well, I'm going to put a call

in to the commanding chief

and suggest that Jesse stay on

as the head of our

Electronic Crimes Division.

SARAH: Whoah! Fancy title, Mills!

- Do I get an expense account?

- No.

- Clothing allowance?

- No.

JESSE: Do I get to

keep any of the tech we seize?

- Definitely not.

- A modest raise?

- Yes.

- Sold!

[JESSE LAUGHS]

- Thanks, buddy!

- [REX BARKS]

I know, look at this!

- [THEY LAUGH]

- Yes!

- Woo-hoo!

- Congratulations.
