So they don't weigh so much.

-Well, the african crestedporcupine's quills are longer

A jackal and an elephantand we are in africa

And it's out here onthe african savanna that the

African crested porcupine useshis sharp quills as a defense.

-But you know, when you lookaround, you start to realize

That of allthe animals out here, veryfew have any armour at all.

-They might nothave armour that you cansee like porcupine quills

But they musthave something to help themsurvive in the wilderness.

So the question is: how dothese unarmoured animal survive?

The answer is the three f's.

-The threef's, I thought that was forstaying warm in the winter.

-No, that's the fourf's, this is the three f's.

-Fast feet.

Flight.

-Formidable size and strength.

Fast feet is whata lot of creatures depend on

To stay a stepahead of predators.

-Let's see how fastwe can get our feet moving.

Okay feet, don't let me down.

-To keep up withzebra feet, we've got toget going faster, faster.

-I'm kicking it into high gear.

-Yeah this is great, but we have to go faster even.

To be a fast creature, you have to run like the wind.

Whoa!

My fast feet aregetting ahead of me.

-I can't keepup with mine either.

-Whoa!

-Are you okay?

-I think so.

Well I guess we arenot one of them, but there are

A lot of creatures who knowhow to handle their fast feet.

-And there area lot of creatures who knowhow to handle their wings.

And that bringsus to the next f, flight.

-You know how birds flyto get away from danger right,

Well to do thatthey have to be light

And that's whythey don't have armour.

But they dohave flight distance.

Flight distance is howclose a bird lets a predator get

Before he says "hey, that'sclose enough, I'm out of here".

Let's see the flightdistance of the hornbills.

Hey they letyou get pretty close.

Closer,

Closer.

Up, that's enough for one

And two. Theyare both out of here.

Now it's on to the third f.

-Formidable size and strength

And nobodydoes that bigger or betterthan an herd of elephants.

Not many creatures wantto mess with an elephant.

In fact, the only creatureselephants worry about

Are people and sometimes lions.

Okay, so we don't have the sizeand strength of an elephant,

We can't fly like a birdand we're really not that fast,

-With such longclaws you have to run

On the tips of your nails.

Even with all thisarmour weighing her down, she's still incredibly fast.

And despite the heavy armour,an armadillo can still swim.

This is how she does it.
