NARRATOR: The turn of the century

at the great estate of Collinwood,

a night of horror and triumph for Judith Collins Trask,

for she has not only escaped death at the hands

of a horrid m*rder*r, Aristede,

but she has also finally achieved revenge

upon her diabolical husband.

[ metal clinking ]

ARISTEDE: Help me! Somebody help me!

[ dramatic music ]

There's got to be a way.

There's got to be a way!

[ pounding ]

Hello? Can you hear me?

Who is out there?

Answer me!

Judith, is it you?

Can you repent of this sin, Judith?

Answer me, whoever you are!

[ dramatic music continues ]

[ eerie music ]

There's no one there.

It's your imagination.

You simply thought you heard someone.

Someone's bound to come.

Quentin! Quentin will come!

He must.

[ dramatic music continues ]

Quentin, don't go upstairs.

I've closed the West Wing.

What?

While you were gone this afternoon,

I had the servants move all your things

to the green bedroom.

[ chuckling ] Why?

I should have done it long ago.

You have no idea the expense of keeping it open

with only you in it. I hope you don't mind.

Oh, no. Not at all.

The portrait of Amanda, what did you do with it?

I had it removed.

Why?

I found it no longer pleased me.

It's not the kind of picture you can live with very long.

Where is it?

I'm afraid you'll never see it again.

Did you destroy it?

Yes.

Judith, something's happening around here.

What?

Oh, now, come on.

You might as well tell me.

Would it help if I told you

someone tried to k*ll me tonight?

Two men, perhaps the same ones who k*lled

your friend Evan.

I heard about that in town.

You don't seem to be mourning for Evan.

Would you have mourned for me?

No, I don't think so.

You and Edward would have shown very little sorrow.

Well, your husband would have made up for us,

at the service anyway.

Gregory's gone, too.

I'm positive of it.

He rushed out after the two men.

He hasn't returned.

It's been over two hours. The police can't find him.

Those men must have done something terrible to him.

If they have, you are to be congratulated.

I might have known that would be your attitude.

Well, if it will be any help to you,

I'll make an offer to go and search for him.

Would you?

Are you sure you want that?

You think about it.

Wouldn't your life be far less complicated

if you simply forgot about your husband?

I will never forget him.

All right, Judith.

Then I'll do you the favor of searching for him.

Where are you going?

Upstairs to check my room.

I'm quite sure the servants have forgotten something.

You can't go up there.

And why not?

I've had the lock changed.

[ chuckles ] To the door of the West Wing?

Give me the key.

Quentin, I don't want anyone to ever go

into that West Wing again.

I am the Mistress of this house,

and you will obey my orders.

[ dramatic music ]

There must be something in this room,

something that will get me out.

A telephone! Quentin had a telephone!

Operator? Operator!

Operator! Operator!

She planned it this way.

How dare she?

I will get out of this room, I swear,

and then I will k*ll her myself.

[ thunder crashing ]

[ eerie music ]

[ metal clanks ]

Trask? Who's there?

ARISTEDE: Help me, please.

Who is it?

Oh, well, so it's you.

I know you've got no reason to help me,

but you caused all of this.

You did, when you sent me to k*ll Petofi.

Now, he's got that monster loose on me.

Please. Trask, he was going to help me.

Well, go to him.

He was going to have a carriage here,

but I can't find it.

I looked for him, I can't find him.

Please!

Blackwood will k*ll me.

He's a devil straight from Hell, I swear it.

Whoever he is, I wish him luck, Aristede.

[ chains rattling ]

Oh, God. He's here!

Now, wait. Why don't you--?

[ chains rattling ]

[ dramatic music ]

What did the prisoner want?

Help.

He was your friend.

No, no.

You tell me the truth!

You saw me try to stop him, didn't you?

I was trying to hold him.

You did well.

He who aids and abets a prisoner must die.

[ chains rattling ]

Whoever is out there, listen to me!

I will give you anything you want

if you will go for the police.

Thousands of dollars!

Wait, wait! Come back! Come back!

[ telephone ringing ]

Hello! Hello!

Who is there?

I can hear you breathing.

Answer me! Who is there?

This is the Reverend Gregory Trask.

[ thunder rumbling ]

[ telephone ringing ]

Hello? Hello, listen to me, whoever you are.

You must help me.

I am trapped in this room at Collinwood.

Please, you must help me, whoever you are.

Go for the police!

JUDITH:Gregory?

I didn't realize you were such an optimist.

Judith.

Who else would it be, Gregory?

I'm the only one who knows how to reach you.

Judith, for God's sake!

JUDITH:Are you enjoying your retreat, Gregory?

Judith, you must let me out.

How familiar that sounds.

I used to say it every day at the sanitarium,

but they wouldn't listen to me.

You arranged that.

So, now I don't have to listen to you, do I, Gregory?

Judith, you must. You must.

Judith, this isn't like you.

JUDITH:Perhaps you never took the trouble

to really know me, Gregory.

Judith, you are a Christian woman.

I am only doing my duty, Gregory.

You're so fond of meditating,

now you can do it under ideal circumstances.

[Gregory]Someone will come.

Someone will let me out.

I don't see how that is possible, Gregory.

I have closed the West Wing.

Forever.

What?

JUDITH:You were saying only the other evening

how you wanted to spend the rest of your life

in this house.

Now that's possible.

I have arranged it.

Judith, if ever you've felt any love for me--

JUDITH:You will not get out of that room, Gregory.

You see, I knew about the death

you had intended for me.

Good night, Gregory.

Judith? Judith?

[ thunder rumbling ]

I cannot believe it.

I cannot.

It's so dark.

How many candles?

I must think of that.

I will get no more.

What am I going to do?

[ door hinges squeaking ]

No! You're dead!

Quentin?

You're dead!

Where is Quentin?

Quentin? I must find you!

Yes, yes.

Find Quentin. Go to him!

Tell him, I am here. Tell him.

Tell him to come to this room.

You can make him come.

Please!

[ thunder rumbling ]

[ waltz music ]

[ thunder crashing ]

Beth.

I knew you'd come back.

- I knew it. - [ Beth sobbing ]

I didn't mean for you to die.

I didn't mean it.

I tried to tell you that I wasn't Petofi.

Beth, can you ever rest?

Not until--

What? I'll do anything!

Anything!

Until you know--

What?

That I--

I forgive you.

Come back!

Don't you understand? I don't forgive myself

for what I did to you,

for the part I played.

[ thunder rumbling ]

Please, hear me, Beth.

[ dramatic music ]

Will I be safe here until I can think of what to do?

Who's there?

I'll k*ll you! I'll k*ll you!

[ dramatic music ]

So, I have a new enemy.

Let me look at you.

No.

That wasn't very smart.

Now, who are you?

Do I have to use force to get you to talk?

I am proud of who I am.

My name is Romano.

The widow?

King Johnny's wife.

I will never be anything else.

I've come to carry out his curse.

Against me?

And I'll do it, but at this minute, you have the knife.

You will pay.

I will, or Count Petofi?

Both!

Look, I was just his servant.

Petofi is your enemy.

You tell me that.

Look, if I give Petofi to you,

if I do, will you take off the curse from me?

Never.

Look, if I become one of you, if I travel with you,

if I prove myself to you?

Why would you do this?

So I can escape from here.

I swear, I can give you Petofi tonight.

But, you've got to promise me that you'll

protect me from my enemies.

Any member of our tribe would do that,

if we got the Hand of Ohsden back.

He's ill, very ill.

He's wounded.

I, myself, wounded him.

Ah, you boast too much!

No, it's true.

That's the reason, one of the reasons,

I've got to get out of here.

If he's so very sick, where is he?

Tell me!

I'll tell you as soon as you tell me

that you'll take me with you.

If you came with us, you would have to change.

You would have to become one of us.

You would have to forget everything

Count Petofi has taught you.

You would have to learn to trust because

we live by it among ourselves.

I know that.

All right.

I'll prove to you that I can be one of you.

He is at the studio

of an artist named Charles Tate.

I'll... draw you a map.

I'll show you how to get there.

It's not far from here.

Look, I'll take you there myself.

- Romano: No. - Why not?

You talk too easily.

Words can cover up traps.

Look, go yourself.

It's no trap, I swear.

Look, here's where you're at.

Go straight down the road to the cemetery,

cut through the cemetery

and it's the first house on your right.

You will wait here.

I will return.

[ door closing ]

I thought I heard someone.

QUENTIN: Yes. It is I.

- You should go to bed? - Oh, I know.

The green bedroom.

Judith, aren't you going to ask me how

my search for your husband came out?

I assume you found nothing.

You assume correctly, if a little too easily.

What do you mean by that?

I do not know, dear sister, for once.

But I shall find out.

The question of your missing husband does interest me.

I don't know why it should.

When he was here, you constantly wanted him

out of the house.

Well, I like all my stories to have an ending.

The honorable Reverend Trask's story,

it is ended, isn't it?

No. No, not yet.

Judith, did we ever confide in each other?

Perhaps when we were children, huh?

I was never given to confiding.

Well, it's probably too late for you to start now.

Yes.

Wherever he is, I know you're happier for it.

An eternity in this place.

It is insupportable.

There must be a way.

Will no one ever come?

Will this room be my grave?

[ thunder rumbling ]

Who are you? What do you want?

BLACKWOOD: You have helped the prisoner.

You're crazy. I don't know any prisoners.

How do you plead to the charge?

ROMANO: Get out of my way!

You must plead guilty.

You have given him refuge.

- Look, I-- - Guilty!

And by the power invested in me,

I give you the same sentence that he must endure.

[ screaming ]

[ dramatic music ]

[ Romano screaming ]

[ metal clanking ]

BLACKWOOD: I call on the prisoner to surrender!

ARISTEDE: My God! It's him!

Surrender!

No, no! Please!

And face justice!

You must face justice!

There is no other way!

[ screaming ]

[ dramatic music ]

[ eerie music ]
