[THEME MUSIC]

-[SINGING] It's a beautiful
day in this neighborhood.

A beautiful day for an opera.

would you like one?

I know I'd like one.

-Did you ever wait for
something to happen.

And then the time
really came for it

to happen like a birthday or a
visit from some special people?

Well, it's very exciting
when the time finally

comes for something
you've waited for.

So now's the time
for the neighborhood

opera called "A
Granddad For Daniel."

Daniel Tiger will be the
one who wants a granddad.

And Lady Aberlin
will be his mother.

She'll also be the
trolley conductor.

And Mr. Aber will
be Daniel's father.

Suppose Daniel's
father uses something

like this for the
work that he does.

Ready for "A
Granddad For Daniel?"

-[SINGING] Almost ready Charles.

MR. ABER: One more
bit of polish, dear.

It's a special day you know.

-Grandparent's day I know.

DANIEL THE TIGER: Mother,
Daddy come and see.

Come and see what I have found.

Mother, Daddy come and
see what's here with me.

-Where are you son?

Where are you?

DANIEL THE TIGER: Over
here behind the plant.

I think I found my granddad.

-What do you mean, son?

What do you mean?

-Could this one be my granddad?

[BAAA]

-Oh no, son.

Oh no, son.

You're granddad
doesn't look like that.

-But you said he was an
old goat, and old goat,

and old goat.

You said he was an old goat.

And this is an old, old, goat.

[BAAA]

-Oh my son.

Oh my son.

I didn't mean a real live goat.

-But you said he was
an old, old goat.

-I meant he was
the kind of man who

sometimes acts like
a real old goat.

[BAAA]

-You mean like that?

-That's right Daniel.

He went away.

-When we find him,
he'll be my granddad.

-Of course he will, son.

Of course he will.

-I want a granddad.

I want a granddad.

I want a real granddad.

-This is what he
looked like years ago.

-I wonder what he
looks like now?

Do you suppose it's
Grandparent's Day where he is?

MR. ABER: Probably.

-Grandparent's day is a special
day, a special day to say,

how much we love our
granddad today and every day.

-Grandparent's day is a special
day, a special day to say,

how much we love our
grandma today and every day.

-I think we're ready.

-Now I must polish the
leaves in the jungle.

And polish them
until they shine.

-The jungle's our third stop.

Want to ride with us?

-I think I'd better walk.

I need to get there quickly.

Farewell, Dear.

-Farewell, Dear.

-I wish there were some
cheer for our dear Daniel.

-His cheer will come
from doing the things

that he is able to do.

-That's true.

-He'll set aside his fretting.

And set his mind
on something new.

-He is so lucky to have
you for his mother.

-He is so lucky to
have you for his dad.

-Goodbye Daniel.

See you when you
get to the jungle.

-Goodbye Dad.

-Someday I'd like to polish too.

-You're dad's a fine, fine man.

-Does this trolley
got to the jungle?

The jungle.

-Yes it does, Sir.

That's our third stop.

-Good.

I'd like to go.

-We're leaving now.

It's a special day.

Grandparent's day.

-Are you a granddad Sir?

-Not that I know of.

I haven't been here for years.

-All aboard.

-Let's get on together.

Hmm.

-The first stop is the aquarium.

-The aquarium.

How nice.

I've always liked fish.

Seen them all over the world.

-Ah-- you've been
all over the world?

-I've been all over the world.

-Oh boy.

-We love to swim.

We love to sing.

We love the life of
fishing spring, a fishing

spring, a fishing
pole, we love it all.

-We love to swim.

We love to sing.

We love the life
of fishing spring,

summer, winter love
of life is all in all.

-Oh look who's
coming in the train.

-Well, well, the star herself.

-Well, well.

-Hello there, horns, hello.

What a lovely day for a show.

I say just give me a part
and two words for a start.

And you'll know that
this star's on the go.

On the rise.

-What brings you here today?

-You're usually a
fish out of water.

-But I'm a star, horn, a star.

-A starfish that is.

-A star is a star is a star.

-Sounds like the
trolley's coming.

-Let's swim everyone.

Let's swim.

-Here we are at the aquarium.

It's one of my
favorite places to go.

Oh, look who's here today.

-Hello my boy.

Hello Miss Fish.

-I'm a star you know.

-I wondered.

-Is that your granddad?

-We just have met.

-He's a fine young
man, this Daniel.

-You're a fine old man yourself.

-Well, thank you star.

-We'll swim for you.

We'll sing for you.

Welcome to the aquarium.

We'll swim for you.

We'll sing for you.

Welcome to the aquarium.

DANIEL: Oh my.

They dance so well.

STAR FISH: Well, angel fish and
dog fish, they're all right.

Oh look they hop.

[CLAPPING]

-Tripping the light "fintastic."

-Mussel.

We stars are fish out of water.

We twinkle day and night.

We're the best there are
in the realm of side.

First in the great white light.

-I like you star.

-And I like you.

Where are you going
next on the trolley?

-Where's our next stop
on the trolley Mother?

-Next stop's the police station.

All aboard whose going aboard.

-Could I go along?

-If you're able Miss Fish.

-We stars are fish out of water.

We go whenever we wish.

-All aboard.

All aboard.

-Well, I'll tell you
this trolley's the life.

-Next stop's the police station.

Keep your seats please.

-Now tell me all about yourself.

-My life has been
colorful just like yours.

I've sailed the seven seas.

I've sold my straws.

But now I've come to please.

I hope I've come to please.

Have a straw.

[TROLLEY BELL]

-We're on our way to
the police station.

-Maybe the police
people need some straws.

-Welcome four, welcome all.

Have a seat near the wall.

-Thank you Officer,
yes, thank you.

-I sell straws, real straws.

-Do you sell all
kinds of straws?

-Yes I sell all kinds
of drinking straws.

And I sell all kinds
of painting straws.

Drinking straws.

Painting straws.

Yes, I sell all kinds
of building straws.

And I sell all kinds
of counting straws.

Building straws.

Counting straws.

Sewing straws.

Wind chime straws.

Any straw.

Maybe you could use
some straws in here.

For police to
work, they must not

fear any straws, any straws
for police, for police

use all kinds of straws.

-I see.

-He's a nice man.

-And his straws are really good.

-I remember my granddaddy
used to use straws.

The kind that would
bend in the middle.

-Like this?

-That's the kind.

-You may have it.

-Thank you.

He'd hum me a song
in water, like this.

DANIEL THE TIGER: That's funny.

-But the song had words.

-Did your granddad
teach you those too?

-He certainly did.

-[SINGING] When the day turns
into night and you're way

beyond my sight, I think of you.

I think of you.

When the night turns into day
and you still are far away,

I think of you.

I think of you.

Even when I am not here, we
still can be so very near.

I want you to know, my
dear, I think of you.

When the night turns into day
and you still are far away,

I think of you.

I think of you.

-Oh that's beautiful.

I should say that'
very beautiful.

When the day turns into night
and you're way beyond my sight,

I think of you.

I think of-- Why Daniel.

You're crying.

-I just wonder if my
granddad is thinking of me.

-I don't know, son.

But I imagine your daddy is.
DANIEL THE TIGER: Oh.

-He's polishing in
that jungle now.

We'll see him very soon.

STRAW SALESMAN: You say
his daddy is polishing,

polishing, polishing
in the jungle.

When do we go there?

-In just one minute.

Farewell then, Officer.

-Until we meet again.

-Yes.

Until we meet again.

Farewell.

-All aboard.

All aboard.

Next stops the jungle.

-Do you suppose it could be.

I wonder.

-I understand how
you must be feeling.

I understand.

You want a granddad.

I understand.

I and your daddy
work long and hard.

And we rarely have home time
together with you my son.

Grandparents often
have time for things.

Those little things that
children find special,

grandparents know.

I understand how
you must be feeling.

I understand.

You want a granddad.

I understand.

-I like Mr. M.

-He seems like a kind man.

-A granddad kind of man.

-I once had a son,
a very young son.

But that tale's
too long to tell.

-Oh please tell.

I'm entranced with the
tail and the telling.

LADY ABERLIN: Next
stop's the jungle.

We'll be there in two minutes.

[TROLLEY BELL]

-Baaa.

-Didn't I see you back at home?

-Baaa.

-Is there something you want?

-Baaa.

-Oh, you want your
horns polished?

Well, I'm glad to
do that for you.

-[SINGING] Polishing, polishing,

-Baaa.

-[SINGING] Polishing everything.

Polishing, polishing,
polishing everything.

Leaves of plants and trees,
shoes of ants and seeds.

Polishing, polishing,
anything anywhere,

any time I will try
to make it shine.

Anything.

Polishing, polishing
when I'm glad.

When I'm sad.

Polishing.

Polishing, polishing
when I'm mad.

Polishing, polishing
when I'm mad.

Polishing.

Polishing.

-Why should I feel mad?

Well, [SINGING] my father went
away a long, long time ago.

He went on a boat or a plane.

I don't know.

My father went away.

And I would always say, I
know he'll come back some day.

My father went away a
long, long time ago.

I wonder if he ever
thinks much of me.

My father went away.

And now I have my doubts.

I wonder if ever--

[TROLLEY BELL]

-Baaa.

-Good bye goat.

Goodbye old goat.

LADY ABERLIN: Here
we are at the jungle.

DANIEL THE TIGER: Where
is daddy polishing?

-Over by the yellow tree.

-I want him to meet
Mr. M and Miss Fish.

-Everyone off for
the jungle now.

STAR FISH: What a lovely jungle.

-Hello Dear.

Hello son.

DANIEL THE TIGER: This
is my daddy Mr. M.

-How do you do young man?

-How do you do?

-We've had a good
ride on the trolley.

STAR FISH: And I'm glad you
all came to the aquarium.

-Miss Starfish and I are
planning to be married.

STRAW SALESMAN:
STAR FISH: Isn't it

wonderful what a
trolley ride can do.

-I'll say.

-I'll be the future Mrs. Meford.

-Mrs. Meford.

Why that's my name.

-And Meford's my name.

DANIEL THE TIGER: And
Meford's my name too.

-It's our whole family name.

STAR FISH: What a coincidence.

-Just a minute everyone.

This may not be
such a coincidence.

Did you ever see a Meford
that looked like this?

-Where did you
find this picture?

-It's a picture of my--

-Charles, oh Charles.

I think I found your father.

-Charles?

-Yes.

Father.

-I'm Marshall Meford.

-And I'm Marshall Meford's son.

-Charles.

-Father.

DANIEL THE TIGER:
What's happening Mother?

-Your father has
found his father.

DANIEL THE TIGER:
Mr. M's the old goat.

Mr. M is daddy's daddy?

-Indeed he is.

Isn't that wonderful?

DANIEL THE TIGER: I'll
say it's wonderful.

If he is daddy's dad,
he's my granddad.

-Indeed he is.

DANIEL THE TIGER: Granddad.

Granddad.

I found myself a Granddad.

-And I have the
best grandson there

is in all the world, the
best in all the world.

DANIEL THE TIGER: I'm
glad you're in our family.

-Thank you grandson.

-But why did you go away?

Why did you go?

-I'm still not sure I know.

But I know that my going
had nothing to do with you.

-I was mad when you left, Dad.

-Of course you were.

I was mad when my
father went from me.

-Your dad went too?

-Long, long ago.

But he didn't come back.

-I'm glad you came back.

-My travelling's done.

I've seen the
world below, above.

And found that what is
real is truth and love.

It took me years to find you.

-I almost gave up yesterday.

DANIEL THE TIGER: I did too.

-The darkest hour comes
just before the dawn.

-I have a granddad.

And will have a grandma.

Hooray Grandparent's day.

-What say we have
a trolley ride.

A ride to celebrate.

-Where shall we go?

-Around the world.

I'll show you all the world.

-All of us?

-Of course.

I know it well.

-Oh, but we'll
come back won't we?

-We certainly will.

It's good to come back.

-Very good.

-Very good.

-Yes.

We Meford's will come back.

We always will come back.

-We've learned our lesson well.

-I'll never leave my family
the way my Dad left me.

-I'm proud of you, son.

-Thanks Dad.

And now I'm proud of you.

-Come along Officer.

-I need to stay
here and do my work.

But I'll see you
when you get back.

[SINGING] How good that
you found one another.

-All aboard whose going aboard.

Next stop's the world.

POLICEMAN [SINGING]: When
the day turns into night

and you're way beyond my
sight, I'll think of you.

I'll think of you.

-When the night turns into day
and you still are far away,

I'll think of you.

I'll think of you.

[TROLLEY BELL]

DANIEL THE TIGER: Happy
Grandparent's day.

STAR FISH: Thank you, Harv.

MR. ROGERS: Grandparent's
day, a special day.

And what a special
opera that was.

And it was Reardon
who played and sang

the part of the
granddad for Daniel.

You know, a person doesn't have
to be old to be a grandparent.

And some grandparents work far
away for long periods of time.

Even when your
grandparents aren't around,

they're still a part of you.

I know that when
I go from here, I

think about the next
time we'll be together.

[SINGING] When the
day turns into night

and you're way beyond my
sight, I think of you.

I think of you.

It's good to think about
the people you love

and to know that
they're thinking of you.

Make each day a special day.

You know how.

By just you're being you.

And people can like
you exactly as you are.

I'll be back next time.

Goodbye.
