[intriguing string music plays]

- [indistinct shouting]

- [traffic noises]

[footsteps approaching]

[door opens]

[door thuds closed]

[melancholy music playing]

[groans]

[panting]

[lighter clicks]

[lighter clicks]

There's no smoking in shul.

[pigeons fluttering]

Karl?

Karl Weissman?

Hadassa's boy?

I saw your mother, not long before she d*ed.

We spoke about you.

Not even you could squeeze a sermon out of this, eh?

And if h*tler's lot get their way, soon enough, you won't have

any of us left to preach to

[chuckles dryly]

pray for.

I treat people the way they treat me.

I made my peace with that.

Jewish child.

Esther.

She's dead 'cause of me.

- By your hand?

- No.

[sniffles] But by my choices.

[stifling sobs]

Rabbi can a man like me find mercy in God's eyes?

It is not His mercy you should seek.

But the child's.

In this life or the next.

- [thunder rumbling]

- [sirens wailing in distance]

[water dripping]

[clanging in distance]

[Barber] Check over that way.

She was coming here last night.

In here!

[Barber] Hasan?

- [Hasan] Help!

- [Barber] Hasan?

- Jesus.

- [Hasan] Thank you.

[Hasan shuddering]

What the hell?

[ominous music playing]

- Hasan?! Hasan?!

- [dramatic music playing]

[Hasan softly] No, no!

The bodies, they were right here.

- What happened?

- [exhales]

- Are you okay?

- No.

[Barber] We swept the house.

There's nothing there.

No records, no jars, no bodies. Nothing.

And Andrew Morley?

No Andrew Morley either.

We're looking for him, but

[sighs]

Look, I don't know what's going on,

but I'm drawing a line under it.

You know there's more to it.

Don't do this.

You've fallen down

a rabbit hole here, Shahara.

I can't follow you.

I'm sorry.

[door opens, closes]

[exhales]

[phone ringing]

[exhales]

[ringing stops]

- Hello.

- [Maggie] Shaz?

Look Barber's told us to leave you be,

but this is crazy, and I've got to know.

Those prints that you gave me,

are they really from 1890?

Yeah. Why?

Right, 'cause

I I got the results.

And they're 100% match with

Shaz,

they're Elias Mannix's prints.

[dramatic sting]

[melancholy string music playing]

[yelling in frustration]

[eerie synth music playing]

Had me fooled, prof.

Organic French wine.

Dinner for two.

Handcuffs.

Best first date I've ever had.

Look,

I'm sorry I lied to you.

Trust me.

Once you know the truth,

you'll know why I'm doing this.

Why Chapel Perilous are doing this.

What truth?

You'll be told soon enough.

By who?

We're here.

- [grunts] Hey!

- [tense music playing]

Go on.

[dramatic synth music playing]

- [Maplewood groaning]

- [Lorna] Get down. Get down.

[Defoe grunts]

[Maplewood grunts]

[Defoe] Shh, shh, shh.

- [Lorna] Stop it.

- [Maplewood grunts]

[door beeps]

[elevator whirring]

[Maplewood breathing heavily]

- [elevator clanks]

- [exhales]

[Lorna] Move!

[Maplewood breathing heavily]

[Defoe] I'm so sorry, Iris.

[Lorna] Your girlfriend better be

bloody worth it, Defoe.

- [Defoe] Shut up, Lorna.

- [Maplewood] I can hear you.

[woman] Iris Maplewood.

[ominous music playing]

Take her hood off.

Okay.

Who the hell are you?

[dramatic synth music playing]

[music fading]

[footsteps approaching]

[Hasan] Gosh.

Elias, who did that to you?

Governor's going to get me transferred

to Feltham this afternoon.

Apparently, all the screws there

practice mindfulness.

[scoffs]

You've found something out, haven't you?

Something weird.

It's lonely, innit?

Try me. Sharing's caring.

These are from our archives.

[ominous music playing]

This man is called Sir Julian Harker.

That was taken in 1890.

Have you heard of him?

The Morleys ever mention him or

He d*ed in 1941.

He was 99 years old.

He was k*lled in his own home,

his own bedroom.

A cop sh*t him.

Nothing ringing any bells?

Never heard of him. Why?

What's he got to do with anything?

These are Harker's fingerprints.

Mm?

And these

are your fingerprints.

Elias,

they're identical.

[dramatic music playing]

[Hillinghead] The first finger markings

were taken from the gaslight

on Longharvest Lane.

The second are Sir Julian Harker's own.

It's proof he was there.

And how did you get this?

It's an oversight, sir,

on Harker's behalf.

[smacks lips]

Dactylography is a continental fad.

It's hardly evidence.

[inhales sharply] I don't know

what this is even supposed to prove.

[tense music playing]

But I think you do, sir.

- Your insolence is

- Sir Julian Harker

was at the scene of the Longharvest m*rder

and he will be questioned formally,

with due diligence.

Here, now!

Your ignorance of the matter

is quite breathtaking to behold.

Get him in.

Can you think of any link

you might have had to Harker?

Your birth parents? Your dad?

- Never knew my dad.

- What about your birth mom?

Do you know where she is?

Morleys said

that she'd probably OD'd by now.

"Probably"?

What does she matter?

That dead body, the Morleys,

they are all linked to this man.

So I need to know

how you're linked to him.

Why your prints match up to his.

And if you don't know maybe she does.

Her name is Sarah.

Is she a Mannix?

[mysterious music playing]

I remember the creeps

that she hung around with.

The track marks on her arm.

That's it.

If she isn't dead

whatever state she's in

I don't want her

to know anything about me.

Okay?

Mags, I need you to get me the address

of every Sarah Mannix in the country.

Focus on the ones with a rap sheet.

- [door closes]

- [g*n cocks]

[ominous music playing]

[Whiteman] No, don't move.

Don't make a sound.

Funnily enough, that was my intention

before you put a g*n to my head.

[glass clinks on table]

Police officer was found dead

on the same tube platform

as that girl in the morgue.

That was your handiwork, wasn't it?

And what about her?

No, I didn't k*ll her.

[grunts] Listen, please.

I need your help.

[gentle music playing]

[grunts]

The body in the boot you k*lled him?

No.

Well, who did? Cozens?

I k*lled Cozens.

Framed him to get the case closed.

I never k*lled a man before.

I had gambling debts,

so I did small jobs, middleman stuff.

A voice on the phone

told me what to do, and I did it.

And she said I had to k*ll Esther.

I couldn't.

So she did it herself.

What are you after?

Hmm?

Vengeance?

Retribution?

[grunts]

Justice.

Justice for Esther.

People here think

you're a walk in the park.

But I know it's no small thing

to keep your nose clean,

especially around here.

This woman,

I don't know who she is,

but she's part of something,

something bigger.

And I'm not the only one on her books.

How did she know Esther was here?

Someone talked.

Someone here.

In our department.

There's never just the one rat, Calloway.

[suspenseful music playing]

They're right here.

Listening.

Watching.

Hiding.

Help me flush 'em out.

Find out what's really going on.

[music continues]

[Hasan] Sarah Mannix?

Yeah?

My name's DS Shahara Hasan.

I'm here to talk about your son, Elias.

He's in some trouble, Sarah.

Look, he he doesn't want

anything to do with me.

He's in prison.

For m*rder.

[Sarah exhales]

[music fades]

The social took him away.

When he were four.

[clicks tongue]

I remember how he looked at me.

This

pale

little kid in the back of the car,

watching his mom

sign him off to foster care.

[exhales]

[inhales]

He never took his eyes off me.

And I just shut the door.

He was safer away from me,

even I knew that.

I tried.

To see him again.

And they said

Elias wanted nothing to do with me.

[sputters] The Morleys,

I mean.

I can't blame him for that.

[Sarah breathes shakily]

You want to see him?

[tense music playing]

What's he like?

Bright.

And alone.

[dramatic synth music playing]

[music fades]

They'll find me, you know?

Then k*ll you.

So, whatever you're gonna do,

get it over with.

I'm not talking.

We don't t*rture, Constable.

We educate.

[tense music playing]

[Hasan grunts]

- [grunts]

- [groans]

[Lorna] Hasan!

Try me again,

and I'll rip the tech from your back.

- f*ck you!

- Easy, Hasan.

[huffing, groaning]

Pick her up.

[Maplewood groans]

[grunts]

Nice friends you've got, Defoe.

Okay.

Don't give me that look.

She's with Mannix.

Maybe, but

I trust her.

Well maybe that's what gets you k*lled.

[door creaks, closes]

How you respond

to what I'm about to show you

will determine how this does

or doesn't end for you.

[light clunks on]

You're not the first detective

to discover Defoe's body.

You're one of four.

[dramatic music playing]

DI Hillinghead in 1890.

DS Whiteman in 1941.

And me.

DS Hasan.

You were a cop?

My investigation 30 years ago led me

to this boy.

Elias Mannix.

He was 15 years old.

You know him.

He'd grow up to be your Commander Mannix.

The government said

they never found who set off the b*mb.

They lied because they did it themselves.

It was Elias who detonated the b*mb.

I watched him do it.

Time travel is real.

Mannix intends to go back to 1890

and form a cult.

This cult will initiate a chain of events

that will lead to the b*mb

that Mannix's younger self will detonate.

Then they'll take power

and build the society we live in today

[inhales]a society

where everybody's loved.

We live in Mannix's utopia, his "fix."

Built on the m*rder

of half a million innocent people.

All he has to do now is go back to 1890

and create that same chain of events.

[music continues]

[Paxman] Sir Julian,

thank you for coming in.

My apologies.

I Please.

My office is a little quieter.

[music fades]

The night of the m*rder,

a photograph was taken

of a figure hiding in an alcove

near where the victim was discovered.

Prints on the gaslight.

Were mine.

I dimmed the gaslight

when I heard someone coming.

There was nowhere else to hide

other than the alcove.

I lost my head a little.

You would too if you'd seen what I'd seen.

- You admit this is you?

- Absolutely.

William, would you mind awfully

bringing us some tea?

Uh, tea?

- I'll send for some.

- No, I'd like you to fetch it.

[door closes]

That'll piss him off.

[mysterious music playing]

I'd tread more carefully

if I were you Sir Julian.

The fact that you're here

and changing your story

tells me that you're scared.

A brave man stands before me.

For now.

I'm going to tell you everything, Alfred.

The whole truth, nothing but.

It's going to blow your mind.

If you're trying to brainwash me,

you're wasting your time.

- Commander Mannix would never

- It's the truth.

In 2023, I found a record.

Mannix recorded hundreds of them,

and on one of them, he says your name.

Iris Maplewood.

He said you'd be important.

I've wanted to know why for a long time.

Mannix believes you're a part of this,

whether you know it or not.

So now that you're here, I want

to work out if you're friend or foe.

If you're friend,

you can help us stop Mannix.

This is

literally the greatest crock of sh*t

I've ever heard.

[Hasan breathes deeply]

[ominous music playing]

Take her to The Throat.

All right, listen up!

[tense music playing]

We have uncovered new evidence

that suggests Lee Cozens was framed

for the m*rder of the man discovered

in the boot the night of Farrell's death.

I'm therefore reopening the investigation.

All leads are to be swiftly re-evaluated.

Get to work.

[suspenseful music playing]

Hey, Charlie, what are you doing?

[door closes]

- I've got an urgent.

- You'll have to hold it, June.

- Mrs. Shirley, we ready?

- [Shirley] Ears peeled, girls.

All calls coming

into the station monitored.

And Charlie will listen in

as they come through.

I want to know whose desk each call

is coming from, and who they're phoning.

- [women murmuring]

- [Whiteman] Calloway's orders.

[suspenseful music continues]

[clicks, buzzes]

Call here.

- [Whiteman inserts jack plug]

- Switchboard.

- [Harris] 456-577.

- Putting you through, sir.

Detective Harris to the Coroner's Office.

[Harris] Benny,

I'll need that coroner's report

on the, uh, one-eyed stiff in the boot.

[Benny] Ugh, again?

[Harris] That git's sending us

on a wild goose chase.

[operator] Another call here.

Switchboard.

- [woman] 565-4444.

- [operator] Putting you through.

[clicks]

[whirring]

That's Kathleen Squires.

I don't recognize the number,

but 565 is the Mansion House

telephone exchange.

[man] To whom may I connect your call?

- [Kathleen] Know you are loved.

- [dramatic sting]

[man] Hold the line, please.

[The Woman] Yes?

[Kathleen] Whiteman's told Calloway

that Cozens was framed

for the body in the boot.

Calloway's re-opened the case,

whole department's back on it.

[line hangs up]

- That's it. She's hung up.

- [ominous music playing]

[music continues]

[lighter clicks]

Another coffee, sir?

I wish you'd come to me first, Kathleen.

- Escort Miss Squires to a holding cell.

- [man] Sir.

Oh No.

I'm sorry, sir.

[grunts] Charlie, please!

She said she'd k*ll my son.

We'll get your son safe, I promise.

But for Esther's sake, who is she?

All I know is the number goes

to a private switchboard at a bank.

Harker and Co. in the city.

[suspenseful music intensifies]

[siren wailing, rattling]

This isn't the Wild West.

If you see her, I ask the questions,

we go by the book. Understood?

[grunts]

Welcome to Harker Bank, gentlemen.

How may I help you today?

I'm, uh, Detective Inspector Calloway.

This is Detective Sergeant Whiteman.

We'd like to see the manager.

May I ask what it's about?

We're after an old bint, cut-glass accent,

who looks like butter wouldn't melt.

You seen her?

[Polly] Well, if the bombs come,

send the girls downstairs to the vault.

Arguably, it'd be safer down there

than anywhere else in London.

[man] Very good.

It's definitely cleaner

than some filthy underground station or

[ominous music playing]

It's her.

I'm the managing director. How may I help?

We're investigating a series of murders,

and we believe that somebody that works

at this bank's private switchboard

may be involved.

Our switchboard?

Are you sure?

[Calloway] If you'd allow me

to ask a few questions,

we can get the ball rolling.

This way.

[Calloway] I need a cool head, Whiteman.

- Stay put.

- Apologies, sir.

What for?

My right hook.

- [groans]

- [tense piano music playing]

- Everybody down.

- [people scream]

- Move it! Move!

- [whimpers]

[groans]

[whimpering]

[Whiteman] We need to talk.

Know you are loved.

[exhales]

[music fades]

[inhales sharply]

[exhales slowly]

I ran away from home when I were 15.

A couple of years later, I meet this boy.

Says his name's Danny.

He were funny.

We got drunk.

Two months later,

it's this thin blue line and

Everybody said I shouldn't keep it,

that I wouldn't be able

to take care of it,

and I knew that it'd be one thing

in this world that were mine.

You know?

[smacks lips] So, I

I tracked Danny down.

[scoffs] Not easy, and, um

[sniffles]

[remote clatters]

He's rich.

You'd never think it.

Danny's the great-grandson

of some posh dead banker,

and he's running on some trust fund.

When I told him I were pregnant,

suddenly, all I'm talking to

are his lawyers.

And they think I'm after the family pot.

And Danny disappears.

[Hasan] Thank you.

[Sarah] When he were born

I couldn't bring myself to look at him.

I was scared.

That he'd look up at me and

see

just the sh*t I had in me.

And he wouldn't know

he wouldn't know that I loved him.

And I did.

[stifles sob]

More than anything.

[stifling sobs]

[exhales]

- [sniffles]

- Sarah,

that banker you mentioned,

his name is Julian Harker, right?

Yeah. How did you know that?

I have searched the Harker family tree,

and there's no one

called Daniel Harker that I'm aware of.

No, no, Danny wasn't

He took his mother's name.

Barber.

[eerie music playing]

Barber?

[tapping phone] Tell me this isn't him.

- Mm.

- You're sure?

Yeah.

- [phone ringing]

- sh*t.

[ominous music plays]

Hasan, everything okay?

Or was it a butt dial?

[chuckling] Can I still say butt dial?

[chuckles nervously] Yeah.

Something like that.

[tense music playing]

Give Sarah my love.

[ominous music playing]

- [hesitantly] How How did you

- We'll see you soon.

[panting]

[scanner beeps]

[Hasan] Is Barber in his office?

[Maggie] Hi. I'm calling about a prisoner

that should have arrived this afternoon.

His name's Elias Mannix.

[man] We're trying to find out

what's going on with that transfer.

- He should have arrived by now.

- What do you mean?

He was signed out

by Officer Daniel Barber.

- Right.

- But we can't reach him.

Okay, uh, get the governor

to call me right back.

- [sighs]

- Well?

Nobody knows where they are.

sh*t!

Hey. Hasan!

[Hasan] Come on!

[strange whooshing and humming]

[crackling]

Still think we're trying to brainwash you?

Defoe!

Time to show and tell.

[tapping at keyboard]

[humming growing louder]

[device thrums]

[whooshing and humming growing louder]

[Defoe] Three years ago,

as part of my research

into the Deutsch particle,

I detected an abnormal neutrino trace.

It defied every natural law

I thought I understood.

All I knew was,

the closer I got to the source,

what you're about to experience

started happening.

[mysterious, disorienting music playing]

Oh my God.

[Defoe] Temporal displacement.

One splits into multiple states of time.

Naturally-occurring time travel.

[humming grows louder]

[sound distorting] There is no science yet

to explain what it is.

Perhaps, we're not ready to understand it.

Pocketful of weird,

110 meters underground.

This is what Mannix wants.

It's time travel, Iris.

He k*lled all those people.

Mannix lied to you.

He k*lled all those people.

Tell me when you're going to throw up,

everybody does first time.

[echoing] Tell me

when you're going to throw up

I'm okay. [retches]

[Defoe's voice echoing]

[sounds become muffled]

[Defoe] Throat is what Mannix uses

to go back to 1890.

That's where the loop begins,

where he creates

the timeline of his own existence.

[Hasan] Each time we've tried

to stop the loop, we've failed.

We can't stop it.

[Maplewood shudders]

[Defoe] We couldn't k*ll Mannix,

so we tried to destroy The Throat.

We've tried to bury it, obstruct it.

- Nothing seems to work.

- Stop talking, I don't

The most I can do is drain it,

deplete it, keep it weak.

There's a dark energy field around it.

Whilst that's there, it can't be used.

But it won't last.

He is coming, and he will use it.

We've seen my body die.

[smacks lips]

It's not possible.

It's real, Iris.

[whooshing grows louder]

[whooshing fades]

[indistinct conversations]

If what you say is true,

if it's already happened,

then you've already lost.

You can't stop it.

You'll die.

Mannix will go back.

[liquid pouring]

[scissors snip]

[inhales sharply] Say you succeed.

Then what?

All we want is to save those lives

by stopping the b*mb.

What about the people who are alive now?

You don't know.

You don't. [scoffs]

You just want to rip everything up

like every other t*rror1st.

I'd have my son back.

[gentle music playing]

Please, Iris.

We need you.

[sucks teeth]

[smacks lips]

You've got me wrong.

I'm not your friend.

- [alarms blaring]

- [dramatic music playing]

[gasps]

You led them here? Hasan!

- [g*n fires]

- [gasps]

Defoe, we need to get you out of here.

Defoe, move, now!

Tie her up.

[sounds fade]

[muffled police chatter]

[disorienting music playing]

[muffled g*nf*re]

[muffled screaming]

[disorienting music continues]

[device whooshing]

- [device clunks off]

- Don't! Don't. Please. Please.

[shudders]

[officer] We've found her, sir.

Maplewood secured.

[alarm continues blaring]

[alarm clunks off]

[footsteps approaching]

[disorienting music playing]

[Mannix] Detective.

Did they hurt you?

No, Commander.

You did well, Detective.

Show me what you found.

[ominous music playing]

Something on your mind, Detective?

No, Commander.

What did they say?

Paranoid fantasies, sir.

Tell me what they said.

Be specific.

They said

They said you were the one

who detonated the b*mb in '23.

And this Throat thing,

whatever that is

[shudders]

was the key to it all.

"Paranoid fantasies"

[device humming]

[device whooshing]

[disorienting music playing]

[breathing shakily]

[Harker] You want to know

what I was doing on Longharvest Lane?

I was waiting for a miracle.

And that miracle came.

It assured me I was on the right path.

A path that will lead to new worlds.

[spoon clinking on cup]

People wake up every day here.

And the moment they do,

they remember their shackles.

They're prisoners,

and they don't even know it.

You wear your shackles too, Alfred.

Anyone can see it.

[tense music playing faintly]

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean.

When you kneel before your God,

do you feel your lies will be forgiven

if you persecute others for theirs?

I will make it my life's mission

to expose you.

All of you.

And I will not stop

until the truth about you is discovered.

[Harker chuckles]

You don't quite remember what happened

at the séance, do you?

What is that?

- [eerie string music playing]

- Your m*rder confession.

There's plenty more.

A simple mortician's trick,

and a dead man

becomes a policeman's spurned lover.

I have no desire to punish nor expose

the part of you

that most deserves the light.

Your love for Henry

is no crime.

It's not a sin.

Love is your only weakness.

Frame Henry Ashe

for the Longharvest m*rder.

Ensure his guilt,

and you and your family

will have a future.

[footsteps approaching]

If you don't,

those photographs will destroy you.

The truth has found its place.

It's a lovely cup of tea.

It's all Paxman's good for.

I didn't k*ll him.

I don't know who did.

I've never known.

[door closes]

[gasps]

[pounds table, groans]

[gasping]

[piano playing faintly]

[playing dramatic melody]

[melody continues playing]

[Polly] You know,

my father was a police officer.

Detective Inspector Alfred Hillinghead.

You remind me of him.

Willfully, blindly stubborn.

Bringing me here to your synagogue.

Looking for answers to questions

your God can't help you with.

So long as He sees through the hole

I'm going to put in your head,

that's fine by me.

You can't k*ll me. It's not the time.

It's not the time?

[mysterious music playing]

Well, let's test that theory, shall we?

Six chambers, one b*llet.

- [cocks g*n]

- [whimpers]

Why did Esther have to die?

I feel your grief.

But there's nothing I can answer

that will relieve it.

[clicks]

[exhales]

Since you couldn't go

through with it yourself,

it fell to me.

I was never gonna do it.

Hmm.

You're young. So certain.

I think you came rather closer to it

than you might care to admit.

[clicks]

- [exhales]

- Why was that body so important?

My father asked the same question.

It did nothing good to him.

- [g*n clicks]

- [gasps]

Think.

How much do you want?

Fifty-thousand?

A hundred?

Say a number, nothing's impossible.

We could go to the bank now.

- You could Wait, just stop!

- [clicks]

You know what happens now, right?

- Is it this chamber or the next?

- [gasps]

I've told you.

We just needed

the m*rder investigation closed.

Who's we?

[exhales] Uncuff me,

and we can explain everything.

- [gasps] Please! Please!

- She was just a kid!

She would have disappeared,

I'd have made sure.

She didn't need to die.

There was too much to lose.

[inhales, whimpers]

I didn't want to k*ll her.

[breathes heavily]

Oh, Karl.

- You think I enjoyed it?

- [object rustles]

[gasps]

- We can make you rich.

- [clicks]

[Polly yelps]

[Calloway] Be a cop, Whiteman.

[Polly shuddering]

- I can't let her walk, Calloway.

- [Calloway] I won't let her.

[Polly whimpers]

[Calloway] She's confessed.

I heard every word.

You're under arrest for the m*rder

of Lee Cozens and DC George Ackroyd.

And you are under arrest

for the m*rder of Esther Jankovsky.

[Polly exhales]

I'll meet the hangman with a smile

knowing your neck's going to snap

- right after mine.

- [door closes]

Calloway, I told you

not to enter till backup arrived.

- Chief?

- [ominous music playing]

Give me the g*n.

- Uncuff her, for God's sake.

- [officer] Sir.

She's under arrest for the m*rder

of an 11-year-old child, sir.

I witnessed her confession.

That's a shame.

- [cocks g*n]

- No, wait!

Calloway!

- [dramatic music playing]

- Calloway!

[chief] Know you are loved.

Hello, Mother.

[music fades]

[car horn honks]

Barber?

Barber?

[intriguing music playing]

[crackling]

[Mannix] Hello, Shahara.

It's Elias here.

If memory serves,

you're listening to this

in my father's flat.

I remember your visit to prison

this morning as if it were yesterday.

We are one another's ghosts

of past, present, and future.

[dramatic sting]

It's hard to grasp, isn't it?

But there's one thing I know for certain.

We'll meet again.

[ominous sting]

- [air raid sirens blaring]

- [dramatic string music playing]
