and hauling freight ♪

♪ Round Tidmouth Sheds

or far away ♪

♪ Down the hills

and round the bends ♪

♪ Thomas and his friends ♪

[whistle toots]

[steam hisses]

[upbeat music]

male narrator:

"Philip's Number."

♪ ♪

narrator: Many of the engines

on the Island of Sodor

have a number

painted on their side.

Toby is number seven.

[bell dinging]

And Percy is number six.

[whistle toots]

James is number five.

[whistle toots]

Gordon is four.

[whistle blows]

Henry is three.

[whistle toots]

Edward is two.

[whistle toots]

And Thomas--

[whistle toots]

Thomas is the number one engine.

But Philip is number .

[jaunty music]

♪ ♪

- Hello, Thomas.

[whistle blows]

Hi, there, Gordon.

- Ah, here comes number .

Really slow and always late.

[laughs]

- That's not true, Gordon.

I'm never late.

- Well, maybe you're number

because you've broken down

times.

- But I haven't!

- Or is it because

you have loose rivets

rattling around

in your radiator?

[laughs]

[continues laughing]

- Don't listen to him, Philip.

He's only teasing.

It doesn't matter

what number you are,

as long as you do a useful job.

- Oh, that's easy

for you to say, Thomas.

You're number one.

I'm number .

And I don't even know why.

[whistle blows]

narrator: Philip was still

wondering why he was number

when he arrived

back at Knapford.

- Ah, Philip.

I need you to take some spare

parts to the Steamworks.

- Yes, sir.

Right, sir.

Um, but before you go, it's--

well, it's just

I've been wondering,

um,

why am I number ?

- Hmm.

[chuckles]

I don't rightly know.

You were number

when you first arrived here.

- Oh.

- But when I have a moment,

I'll check the records

and see if I can find out.

- Oh, great!

Thank you, sir.

- Huh.

Who knows.

Maybe there were

other Philips before you.

- What?

Philips before me?

Oh, my.

- Hello, Philip!

Good morning, Philip!

- Good morning, Philip!

[multiple Philips chattering

indistinctly]

- Philip?

Philip.

- [gasps]

- Everything all right?

- Uh...

[clears throat]

Yes.

I'm fine, thanks, Toby.

- Okay.

[bell dinging]

- [sighs] I have to find out

the real reason

why I'm number .

Victor!

[whistle blows]

I've got your spare parts!

- Philip, my friend.

Good to see you.

- I'll get unloading,

shall I, boss?

- Yes, you carry on, Kevin.

- Um, Victor,

you know everything about

engines, don't you?

- Well, I wouldn't go so far

as to say I know everything--

- So you know why I'm number !

- Maybe that's how old you are,

Philip.

.

- [gasps, moans]

- Say cheese!

[noisemaker blows]

[dinosaurs roar,

camera shutter clicks]

- [laughing]

No, no, no, Kevin.

Philip is a young engine.

I'm sorry, my friend.

I'm more familiar with steamies.

Maybe someone at the diesel

works will be able to help you.

- The diesel works!

Yeah, of course!

I'll ask

at the diesel works.

[whistle blows]

Hello, Paxton.

[whistle blows]

Hello, Sidney.

How are you?

Good. You?

I heard you know

why I'm number .

- Oh.

Uh...

I'm not sure.

- Huh?

Uh...

- [laughs]

Of course he hasn't.

- Oh, I know

why Philip's number .

- [gasps]

- Yes.

[whistle blows]

- Oh.

narrator: Philip was

getting nowhere.

He still didn't know

why he was number .

But he was sure that every

number must mean something.

- The train leaving

from platform three

is the : for Harwick.

[machinery whirring

and clanking]

narrator: There were numbers

everywhere.

All Philip could think about

was what his number meant.

[jaunty music]

♪ ♪

[laughter]

[laughter]

narrator: Then, as he was

traveling along the mainline...

[sheep bleating, fence snaps]

[sheep continue bleating]

- [gasps]

[sheep bleating]

[brakes squealing]

[grunts]

Oh, no.

Get off the line!

Oh, shoo, shoo!

[whistle blows]

- Oh!

Oh, no!

My sheep!

My sheep!

[whistle blowing,

sheep bleating]

- You can't stay there!

Gordon will be along any minute

with the express.

[sheep bleating]

Yes!

They're finally moving!

[whistle blows]

Oh, no!

He's almost here!

[engine chugging]

Uncouple me.

[chains jingling]

[heroic music]

- Philip, what are you doing?

- I've got to stop Gordon!

[whistle blows]

[train engine chugging]

[heroic music continues]

[whistle blows]

[train engine chugging]

[whistle blows]

Stop!

Gordon!

Stop!

- Oh, no!

[brakes squealing]

- [groaning]

[grunts, sighs]

- [whimpers]

- [gasps]

- Philip,

you silly little engine!

Whatever are you doing

on my line?

- Broken fence.

Sheep all over the line.

Phew!

- Huh?

Uh, oh.

Thank you, Philip.

[sheep bleating]

- , --

[horn honks]

- Oh.

Oh.

Gordon, Philip.

What happened?

- Little Philip here

prevented

a nasty accident, sir.

- Is that right, Philip?

- Well, I--I just saw the sheep

on the line, and--

- He's being modest, sir.

He was extremely brave.

- Well done, Philip.

- [chuckles]

Yes!

Well done, Philip!

This little diesel

saved my whole flock,

all of them.

- ?

- Ah, yes.

That reminds me.

I have good news for you,

Philip.

I've done some research

and discovered

why you're number .

The reason is--

- Oh, it doesn't really

matter anymore, sir.

- Uh, what?

But--

- I want to be number

because I saved sheep.

And no other engine

has ever done that!

- Hmm.

Very true.

And everyone

will remember you for that.

[chuckles]

Well done, number .

- Sorry I teased you before

about your number, Philip.

When it comes to being brave,

you're number one!

- Don't be silly, Gordon.

- Huh?

- Oh, everybody knows

I'm number .

And it's great!

[steam hisses]
