to pick vegetables

from our school garden. And then

Miss Elaina's coming over
for dinner.

the vegetable garden at school.

let's go pick some veggies!

- Vegetables! Have you
ever picked vegetables?

I haven't. so I'm excited.
Here I come!

Look at our garden!

What vegetables do you like?

I like tomatoes!

I can't believe how much
our garden grew!

Wow!

- That's because we planted
the vegetable seeds.

- And we watered them.

- And we had lots
of sunny sunshine!

- And now we get to pick
the vegetables and taste them.

- Yippee!
- Yeah!

[laughing]

- Tasting the vegetables?

Oh, no, I don't think
I like vegetables.

I don't want to try them.
- OK, you three,

would you like to find
some juicy red tomatoes
for the group to taste?

- Yes!
- Yep!

- Off you go!
- Tomatoes!

Let's look for red tomatoes.

Where would they be?
- Oh, tomaaaaaaatoes!

- Looking... looking...
looking...

Do you see red tomatoes?

[He gasps.]
Look!

These bushes have tomatoes!
I think.

But... they're so little.
- Are they tomatoes?

- Uh-huh. Those are
cherry tomatoes.

- I never had

a cherry tomato before!
Hi, little cute cherry tomato!

- Daniel, why don't you
and Miss Elaina pick six
cherry tomatoes for us to try?

- Come on, toots!
Let's get picking!

- Will you count the tomatoes
with us?

OK, let's count!

One, two, three,

four, five, six.

- Six tomatoes!

- Great job, you two.

Now I'll just wash them off
so we can taste them.

- Have you ever tasted
a tomato?

I wonder what little
cherry tomatoes taste like.

- Here we go.

Mm. Whoa! The tomato squirted
in my mouth! Yum!

It is too squirty for me.

- Hmm. Have you ever had
a tomato before?

- No, meow-meow.

- Teacher Harriet,
I have a question.

Look at these green leaves.
What vegetable is that?

- They are carrots.
- [kids]: Carrots?

- Carrots are orange!
These are GREEN leaves.

- Well, here's the secret.

The orange part of the carrot
is... in the ground.
- What?

- Do you want to pull a carrot
out and see?

- Yes!
- Yes, indeed!

- Meow-meow!
- OK, everyone,

put your hands on the bottom
of the green part.

- Meow-meow.
- Me too, me too!
- Royally ready!

- Now, one, two,
three, pull!

[grunting with effort]

- Whoa!
- I got a carrot!

[laughing]

- See? The orange part of the
carrot grows under the ground.

- I liked pulling the carrot,
but I don't want to try
the carrot.

- It's OK.

- Can you believe carrots grow
under the ground?

I wonder what it's like
under there.

Heeey, do you want
to make-believe with me?

Let's make believe that we're
underground with the carrots!

- ♪ On land you'll only find
our leafy crown ♪

♪ 'Cause us carrots like to grow
under the ground ♪

- ♪ You see us beets,
we live here too ♪

♪ With a few potatoes,
just a bunch of roots ♪

- Crunchy!

- Try this,

- Mm... Heh, heh.
I don't think

I like the carrots.
They're too crunchy for me.

- Well, that's OK.
I'm glad you tried them.

Katerina? Would you like
to try a carrot?

- Mmm, no, thank you.
I don't want to try a carrot.

- All right. But remember...

- Ooh! I'll have it!

I love, love, love carrots!
They're deeeelicious!

- OK, the next veggie
to look for is bell peppers!
- [Katerina and Daniel]: OK!

- Where could it be? Over here?

- Hmm, I don't know.
- Where would they be?

- So pretty!
- Looking...

[Katerina gasps.]
- What are these vegetables?

- Bell peppers!
- Bell peppers?

They're soooo pretty.

Look at all the colors,
meow-meow! I see yellow,

and green, and red,
and even orange!

- Wow!

Do bell peppers ring
like bells?

- Yeah, the peppers don't really
ring like bells, right,
meow-meow?

- Right. They don't ring. See?

They just look like bells.

Want to pick eight bell peppers
for us to try, Katerina?

- OK! Daniel, meow-meow,
you come too!

- Will you count the peppers
with us?

OK!

One, two...

- Three, four...

- Five, six...

- Oooh! Green too!

Seven, eight!

[laughing]

We picked all the colors,
meow-meow!

- Excellent! Let's wash
these bell peppers first,

then we'll cut them up
into slices.

Katerina, would you like
to try first?

- Hmm...

OK, I'll try it.

It tastes... good.

Crispy and sweet.

I like bell peppers!

Meow-meow! Peppers are
my new favorite!

a cherry tomato too?

- Why, sure.

- Mmm!

I like the squirty
tomatoes, meow-meow!

- How about a carrot
while you're trying?

- Hmm...

These carrots are
too crunchy for me.

- It's OK if you don't like it.
You should feel proud

that you gave all
of the veggies a try.

- I did. I tried.

- How about we make a big
vegetable salad for snack?

- With lots of bell peppers,
meow-meow!

- Vegetables taste good!
- [kids]: YEAH!

Tomorrow, I want to try
a bell pepper sandwich,

and a bell pepper spaghetti,
and bell pepper pizza!

I like trying new things!

- Which foods do you want
to try?

I hope they taste good!

- Bug!

- [Harriet]: Hello, neighbors.

Today we're going on a school
trip to a community garden.

- ♪ We gotta try new food
'cause they might taste good ♪

♪ Good

- Do you want to hold that one?
Good job.

- These children are picking
vegetables to eat.

It's good to try new foods.

- Do all you guys want to help
with the peas?

- What's this?

- That's a pea.
It's called a sugar snap pea.

- Can I eat it?
- Yes, you can. Right here,

and then pull it. It makes it
so that the whole pea plant
doesn't pull off the vine.

Do you like them?

Do you and David want
to do that bowl?

- Beets grow deep in the
ground.

- After you put the seed
in the ground, it takes

four to six weeks
before you get a beet.
- What do beets taste like?

- When you cook them, they get
a little bit sweet
like a carrot,

and they're crunchy.

Yeah, I like them.

- I'm going to stick the shovel
in and loosen up the soil,

because you always have
to loosen the soil

before you pick carrots,
because guess what happens

if you just pull the carrot
without loosening the soil.

- The root will break.
- Yes,

we eat the root of the plant.

OK.

- Did you know that carrots can
be orange AND purple?

Don't they look wonderful?

- Oh, a nice big purple one.

Look at that. Do you want
to hold that one?

- ...in the salad bowl.

- Because vegetables grow
in the ground, it's important

to wash them before eating.
- Put them in the salad bowl.

- ...wash some of the ones
over in that bowl still.
- Yep,

just shake 'em off.

Don't squeeze 'em.
Good job, everybody.

We've never played that
before.

- I know. It's new.
I made it up. Ha! Ha! Ha!

- OK!

for the silly beast!

- Roar!
- Roar back! Ha! Ha! Ha!

- Did you like playing
my new game?

that silly beast game.

- Me too. It was fun.

- Oh, hello in there-ere-ere.
- Mom.

- So, how's
my adventure tiger doing?

- Grr-ific!

Dad was a silly beast,
and I found him!

- A silly beast?
Well, that's a new one!

- Dad made it up.
- Well, it sounds like fun.

Want to take a break
from your adventure

and help me in the kitchen?
- OK, Mom. I like helping.

- OK, let's see

what we'll need.
- Oooh,

whatcha making?
- Well,

since Miss Elaina is coming over
for dinner tonight...

- Yay!
- Yay! Ahem.

Yes, well, I'm making
something new for dessert.

It's called Banana Swirl.

- Banana Swirl? What's that?
- Well,

I put these bananas
in the freezer.

- Brr! They're cold!
- Mm-mmm. Freezing cold!

And now, we put them
in the blender, like this.

And put the top on.

And we can press
the go button together.

Here we go. Ready?

- Whoa!

- Aaaaaand... stop!

- They don't even look
like bananas anymore!

- Nope! Now it's
Banana Swirl!

Can you... taste it and tell me
what you think?

- Taste it? But...
what if I don't like it?

- Well, you tried
a new game today.

Can you try a new food too?

OK, I'll try it and see
if Banana Swirl tastes good.

- That's the spirit! Daniel,

it's cold...

hmm... and sweet.

It kind of tastes like...

banana ice cream!
I like Banana Swirl!

- Mmm! I'm glad.
I like it too.

And I'm glad you tried
something new, Daniel.

- Me too! Banana Swirl tastes
goooooood!

[mom laughing]
- Sure does!

It will be a great dessert
after the veggie spaghetti
we're having for dinner.

- Veggie spaghetti?
What's that?

- You want to see?
- Yes!

- Here's the spaghetti,

and these veggies go on top
of the spaghetti

to make it...
veggie spaghetti!

- Hmm... I've never had veggie
spaghetti before, you know.

- I know. It'll be something
new to try.

[doorbell]
I hear the doorbell.
That must be Miss Elaina.

- Miss Elaina!

- Bye, Mom! Hiya, toots!
- Hi, Miss Elaina!

Mom, do we have time to play
before dinner?

- Sure. I'll call you
when dinner's ready.

- [both]: Yay!
- Come on!

Let's play adventure!
We need to find the silly beast

that's in the cave!
- A silly beast?

We've never played
that game before.

What if I don't like it?
- Well... I think if you try it,

you'll like it.
It's very fun

and VERY silly.

- Oh. I do like
silly things.

that silly beast!

We have to be very,
very quiet.

- I'LL GO IN FIRST!

- [whispering]: I'll go in

Here's some veggie spaghetti
for you.

for Daniel.

- Um... Mom? I don't like
veggie spaghetti.

- But, Daniel honey, you've
never even tried it before.

- No, I haven't tried
veggie spaghetti.

- So then how do you know
you don't like it

- Try it?

I don't know.
What do you think, Miss Elaina?

- Huh? Well, toots,
in my house, we say...

It's kind of crunchy, munchy...

with squirty tomatoes!

Veggie spaghetti is good!

- Um... no.

not my favorite.

Do you think I can just have
plain spaghetti?

- OK, plain spaghetti
for you,

and a little salad
on the side, OK?

- Thanks.

Ooh! Carrots!

And I'm glad I tried

- OK, OK.

Mmm! It IS smushy-yummy!

I'm glad I tried it!

- Mmm! Me too!

- Yummers!

[all laughing]

- I liked trying
a new silly beast game

and new Banana Swirl

and new veggie spaghetti!

Do you ever try new things?

I like trying new things,
especially when I'm with you.

Ugga-mugga.

- ♪ It's such a good feeling
to play with family
and friends ♪

♪ It's such a happy feeling
when they lend you a hand ♪

♪ You wake up ready to say
- Hi!

- ♪ "I think I'll make
a snappy new day" ♪

Because it's you I like.

- Hi, I'm Roshan, and I'm going
to make Banana Swirl!

First we have
to peel the bananas.

You have to put the warm
bananas
in the freezer and freeze it.

And then when it's all frozen,
you put the cold bananas
in a blender.

Then you put it on high.

Banana Swirl is done!
