we can do to express who we are

about being an upstander
and standing up to racism.
- Yeah, and racism is treating
people unfairly and unkindly
just because of the color
of their skin
or where they come from,
and that's wrong.

That is wrong, Gabrielle.

something that they've made?

- Yeah, um,
I made up my own superhero.
His name is--

way to express yourself

that look like me and Gabrielle
can get treated unfairly
because of the color

- Racism
is treating people unfairly
just because
of the color of their skin.
That's wrong and unfair.
Let me try to explain.
I remember a time
when some kids
were pretending
to play superheroes.
Sounds like fun, right?
[child giggles]
Whoo-hoo!
- Oh, I'll choose
the pink one.
- Each kid knew exactly which
superhero they wanted to be.
- Yay!
[upbeat music]
- Come on, let's go!
- I'm gonna catch you.
- [grunts]
I'm the strongest in the world.
[laughter]
- Ooh. Ah.
- Ride to the sky!
- [laughs]

Ah.

You're so fast.
- Well, two kids wanted to be
the same superhero.
Kevin turned to Brandon
and said,
"You can't be a superhero.
Superheroes
are supposed to be white."
That made Brandon
feel confused and angry,
sad.

- Racism hurts,
and it's wrong.
- [sniffles]

- But Brandon
thinks superheroes
can come in all skin colors.

- Making a judgment based on
the color of a person's skin
is unfair and wrong.

So Brandon stood
like a superhero and said...
- I can be any superhero.
My superhero is Black.

- Another superhero!
- His friends stood up
and declared
superheroes can be any color.

children feel empowered

and in every kind of community.

- Racism has been around
for a long time,
and it's made a lot
of different things unfair,
but that doesn't mean
that things can't change.
Sometimes you need to act,
either by standing up
for yourself,
standing up for someone else
who is being treated unfairly,
or going to get a grown-up
who can help.

that teaches ways
