- Hi there.
I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.
Turtles are amazing creatures.
They were around with the very first dinosaurs,
And they've remained almost unchanged
For millions and millions of years.
And they're still around today.
How have turtles been able to survive for so long?
One reason is the protective shell that covers the body.
Most turtles, like the ancient adocus
And this modern turtle, have hard shells.
Others, like the huge cretaceous turtle archelon
And the leatherback turtle that's alive today,
Have softer shells.
Many turtles also have retractable necks.
This means the turtle can pull its neck into its shell
To protect the head from predators.
There goes the neck of adocus.
And there goes glyptops' neck.
Now, watch this little turtle retract its neck into its shell.
But not all turtles can retract their necks.
The triassic turtle proganochelys couldn't.
So as protection, its head and neck were covered
With armored plates and pointy spikes.
Pretty cool, huh?
And here's a modern-day turtle that can't pull its neck in,
The sea turtle.
Some sea turtles, like the leatherback,
Protect themselves by growing very large.
Okay, get outside, get into nature,
And make your own discoveries.
- Hello, folks.
It's me, the conductor.

Is it making yummy tummy full noises?

- But, buddy, how can you be hungry?
We just ate so much fish.
- Oh, should I go catch some more?
- Uh, no, thanks, mom.
I had plenty. It's just...
- It's just that you're a t.rex,
And fish doesn't satisfy you like meat does.
- You're right, mom.

I'd be so happy I'd roar!
- Well, I want my kids to be happy.
And I happen to know a place
That serves the best carrion around.

And since dad took shiny and don on a flying play date,
I say let's go on our own adventure.
Both: yay!
To the dinosaur train!
- Well, of course buddy's craving meat.
He's a carnivore.
And if there's one thing carnivores need, it's meat.
[Stomach rumbles] - and soon.
- Well, you're in luck, buddy.
Just today, we got a whole new shipment of meat.
- Did someone say, "whole new shipment of meat"?

- Oh, yes. I'm a carnivore.
I'm always hungry for meat.
- Then let's make fleet feet to greet the meat.
To the dining car.
- Wow, buddy, I knew you were hungry,
But this is really hungry.
- I guess I just really wanted meat.
And this meat is so good.
- You haven't seen anything yet.
Carrion kebobs, the special of the day,
Along with carrion on crackers, carrion crunchers,
And carrion chowder.
- Amazing.
I never knew there were so many dishes to make with carrion.
- Oh, once I had a cavalcade of carrion casserole
That contained six different kinds of meat.
- Six different kinds of meat?
That sounds like a lot.
- Yes, it is, especially for a juvenile like you, buddy.
But I'm full grown.
Oh, that casserole was served with crispy carrion cakes
And meat gravy sauce,
The best meal I ever ate.
- Wow, that even sounds good to me,
And I'm a piscivore.
I eat fish.
- Where did you eat that meal, laura?
- The same place I had all my favorite meals,
In another part of the cretaceous
With my distant cousin carson carcharodontosaurus.
- Oh, you mean chef c.
- Mr. Conductor, do you know laura's cousin?
- Do i?
He's only the most famous chef in the mesozoic.
Carnivores from all around take the dinosaur train
To get a taste of chef c.'S carrion creations.
- How have I not heard of him?
- Well, mrs. P., You're not a meat eater.
But chef c. Is someone you should know, buddy.
Oh, you'd like him too, tiny.

Carcharodontosaurus is more closely related
To giganotosaurus,
But it's about the same size as an adult t.rex.
- Looks like he has sharp teeth like a t.rex too.
- Good eye.
"Carcharodontosaurus" means "sharp-toothed lizard"

- To help him chew through meat?
- Lots of meat.
- Wait a minute.

Open wide, buddy.
- Ah!
- [Squawks]

- You're right, tiny.
But wide or narrow,
Carson and laura's teeth are perfect for tearing into meat.
- And carson knows everything about all kinds of meat.
That's what makes him a great chef.
- And don't forget, he's a hyper carnivore.
Both: a hyper carnivore?
- Indeed.
"Hyper" means "a lot of."
And carson likes a lot of meat.
That makes him a hyper carnivore.
He eats more meat than most carnivores.

Called the "king of the jungle"?
People call lions kings because they're top carnivores
Of their habitat.
But way back in the cretaceous time period,
There was a different top carnivore in africa:
Carcharodontosaurus.
It was a giant theropod dinosaur about the same size as t.rex
And giganotosaurus.
All these big guys loved to eat meat.
How much?
Well, the bigger the carnivore, the more meat it had to eat.
So giants like carcharodontosaurus ate a lot,

- I'm actually the one who's competing,
But I never go anywhere without ollie.
- That's why I'm keeping oren company.
- From the jurassic, glyptops and haplocheirus!
[Cheers and applause]
- From the triassic, proganochelys and eoraptor!
[Cheers and applause]
- [Chuckles] hello.

The first team to get both creatures
Across the finish line wins.
[Cheers and applause]

Can we go down and get as close as we can, mom and dad?
- Sure, tiny. We're right behind you.
- So which team are we rooting for?
- Well, the cretaceous, I guess.
We're friends with adam and oren and ollie.
- But what about erma and pauline on team triassic?
They're our friends too.
- But we come from the cretaceous, buddy.
So go, team cretaceous!
- Hi, team cretaceous.
How are you feeling about your chances
Of winning the race today?
- Pretty good, actually.
I may be slow, but I figure I can hold my own
Against those other turtles.
- Adam's right.
The other turtles are about the same size.
They probably go at the same speed,
Which isn't very fast.
But oren and ollie are the speediest creatures
I've ever seen.
We can't lose.
- Yes! Go, team cretaceous!
[Squawks]
- Hi. So you're a glyptops?
- Yep, sure am.
- I like comparing features between different species.
So can you retract your head into your shell like adam can?
- You mean like this?
- [Laughs] cool, thanks.
- Hey, I see you're a theropod like me, buddy.
- Yeah, but you've got three-fingered claws,
And I've only got two.
And your legs are really long.

- Wow, he looks fast.
Should we be worried about team cretaceous?

- And I'll stay with the turtles and cheer 'em on.
[All cheering]

On your mark. Get set.
Go!
Both: we'll watch the theropods.
- Okay, we'll stay with the turtles.
- Beautiful day for a race, isn't it?
Both: it certainly is.
Both: mm, bushes!
- [Squawks] um, you guys!
What are you doing?
- Having a quick snack.
- Fast runners have to eat a lot.
Both: and often.
- Oh, right. I forgot.
But don't forget the race.
You don't want to fall behind.
Look! There go the other theropods!
Both: we're on it!
Running. Bye, tiny!
- You keep an eye on oren and ollie.
I'll fly ahead and follow erma.
[Squawks] hi, erma.
How are you doing?
- Well, howdy, miss shiny.
Reckon I'm doing pretty good.
- You sure are.
- Who would've thunk it?
A triassic theropod in the lead.
I might actually win this little, old classic
In the jurassic thing, don't you know?
- But both the theropod and the turtle from each team
Have to cross the finish line to win, right?
- Mm-hmm.
Wonder how pauline is doing right now.
- Well, imagine, here we are,
Racing in the classic in the jurassic.
- Yep, and we're still neck and neck.
- Hello. Look up ahead.
Some big rocks.
[Both giggling]
- I think I'll walk around them.
- I'll just climb over them.
- Suit yourself.
- Uh, I seem to have flipped over.
A little help?
- I wonder if it's okay to help.
Maybe it's against the rules.
- Don't worry, buddy.
We've got it.
[Both grunting]
- There. Thank you very much.
Both: you're entirely welcome.
- Yay! - Yeah!
Whoo-hoo! Yeah!
[All cheer]

- Yep.
In fact, I can't remember the last time I was this excited,
Don't you know?
[Both laughing]
Both: ow!
[All gasp]
- Well, that was exciting.
I'd call it a three-way tie, mr. Mayor.
- Bless my decorative horns.
It's a three-way tie!
- But if it's a tie, which time period wins the classic?
- Well, shiny, the trophy would go to whichever turtle
Crosses the finish line first.
- The conductor's right.
It's now all on those slow and steady turtles.
- [Squawks]
Then let's go see how the turtles are doing.
- Great idea. - We'll come too!
Both: come on!
Both: hooray! You're almost there.
- Come on. That's it.
Walk! Walk fast.
Both: you're in the home stretch.
[All cheer]
- Well, bless my spiky tail.
We're nearly at the finish line.
- Yep, it's a close one.
It's neck and neck, as they say.
- Speaking of which,
I can't help but admire your neck, pauline.
It's all armor-plated
And covered with those amazing spikes.
Yes, it is.
Thank you.
It's armor-plated because triassic turtles
Can't retract our heads into our shells like you can.
Both: oh, you mean like this?
- The winner, by a non-retractable neck,
Is pauline proganochelys.
- Really?
Didn't we all go across the finish line together?
- No, that was right when we retracted our heads
Into our shells.
Talk about bad timing.
- Then the winner of the classic in the jurassic
Turtle and theropod race is the triassic time period.
[All cheering]
- Gosh, thank you.
- Don't you know?
- Nice try anyway, team cretaceous.
- And team jurassic.
