Hello, folks! It's me, the conductor. Today, we're

Gonna visit the stygimoloch and learn all about its amazing

Horns! So come on along with me on the dinosaur train! All

Aboard!

There was a mom her name was mrs. Pteranodon

Sitting on her nest she heard a scratching

And said... ♪ Oh, boy! My eggs are

Hatching!

♪ One by one her kids popped free

Baby pteranodons , , ♪

I'll name you tiny, shiny, and don.

♪ But tiny said... ♪ Wait! There's one more, mom!

♪ Last little baby was a different size

With teeth and a tail and big green eyes

He didn't look anything like the rest ♪

What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?

♪ But dear, old mrs. Pteranodon said... ♪

Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom. You may be

Different, but we're all creatures. All dinosaurs have

Different features. Come on, buddy. We'll take a vacation.

I'll get us a ticket at pteranodon station. We'll

Travel the world in sunshine and rain and meet all the

Species on the...

I know a family of dinosaurs called the stygimolochs. They

Have lots of horns.

Can we go visit them?

Sure. We could take the dinosaur train and visit them.

You could ask them all about their horns.

Oh, boy! The dinosaur train!

Sure thing, mrs. Pteranodon.

You're just in time. It's about to arrive.

[Train whistle blows] ♪ I hear a shrieking

A squeaking ♪ ♪ a clanking

And a clinking ♪ ♪ are you thinking

What I'm thinking? ♪ ♪ It's chuffing and puffing

My heart is pounding ♪ ♪ the whistle's blowing ♪

She's huffing and a-puffing like a hurricane

Ha ha! I'm your buddy, and my name's buddy. That's pretty

Ha ha ha! I know. My buddy named buddy.

I like how you can punch tickets with your claw.

Oh, this? It's my special troodon claw.

Is your claw sort of like a horn?

Well, it's sharp like a horn and made of the same stuff.

I've become interested in horns. I was hoping I might

Grow some.

Hmm. Well, I see your tickets are to the valley of

The stygimolochs, and you'll see lots of horns there.

[Chiming] time tunnel! Hang on to your

Hats, folks! Time tunnel approaching!

Yeah! Ha ha ha!

Here it comes.

This always makes me feel funny.

Yes. It's a time tunnel.

We're traveling through time through a tunnel. It does feel

Funny. I like it, too, tiny.

Better get back to work. Now entering the end of the

Cretaceous! End of the cretaceous! We've traveled

Million years forward through time!

Million years? That makes me feel funny, too.

Valley of the stygimolochs next stop! That means you,

Folks.

[Whistle blows] bye!

The stygimolochs live right down there. Come on, buddy and

Tiny.

[Squawk] ha ha ha!

Hello! Buddy and tiny, these are my friends stuart and

Shirley stygimoloch.

Hello, buddy and tiny. I'm stuart.

I'm shirley. We're stygimolochs.

Stygimolochs.

So how are you?

How is live at the seaside?

How's the nest?

They look scarier in person than they did in the brochure.

Well, you wanted to see some horns.

Oh, they do, don't they?

Oh! But we haven't introduced you to our little

Boy. Buddy and tiny, this is spiky.

That's a lot of horns!

Yeah.

You're not gonna poke us with those, are you?

No! I know my head looks like it's for butting into

Things, but these horns are mostly for show.

What do you mean for show?

Like you put on some kind of show with them?

Well--hey. Want to come down to our swamp? There's lots of

Species of dinosaurs there. I can explain what I mean.

Yeah! Can we, mom? Please!

Maybe you can learn about horns.

This way!

So here's our swamp. All the dinosaurs come down here for a

Drink, and there's good trees here, too. We eat leaves.

Stygimolochs are herbivores, you know, vegetarians.

Pteranodons mostly eat fish.

That makes us carnivores.

How about you, buddy?

I don't know what species of dinosaur I am. My mom found my

Egg and adopted me, but I think I'm a carnivore, too.

Buddy and I like to try different foods. It's

Adventurous!

Yeah. Sometimes, too adventurous.

[Roar] what are those?

Those are triceratops. See those big horns? They're pretty

Pointy, but watch this.

[Humming] aah!

Aah!

See? No one messes with a stygimoloch because our horns

Are really pointy. The other dinosaurs are never sure if I'm

Gonna poke them. It scares away the carnivores that might

Want to eat me.

Wow! I get what horns are for! They really do make you

Look tough, spiky. I'm glad you don't use them to hurt anyone,

Though.

I know. I love them. Horns are cool!

♪ Horns are cool horns are really fun

I don't have to bite ♪ ♪ because they scare

Everyone ♪ even me. And I know you're

Nice.

I'm trying to find out what my species is. Maybe you're my

Oh, you're a perfect little baby stygimoloch, aren't you?

The baby has little horns already, mom.

It sure does. Little horns that will grow to be big horns.

I wasn't born with horns, and I don't have any now, so

That means I'm not a stygimoloch, am i?

No. I guess you're not, buddy.

Raar! I really wanted to be a stygimoloch. It's so much fun.

I know! It is fun! Hee hee!

Uh, I mean, it's ok. You and tiny have great features, too.

Yeah! I have these wings. I can fly away from danger!

And look at your big white teeth, buddy. I bet the other

Dinosaurs are pretty scared of them.

Yeah. I guess.

[Sighs] oh, don't worry, buddy.

We'll keep traveling on the dinosaur train and keep

Searching, and someday, we'll find your species.

Good! Because I love riding the dinosaur train!

And it's fun meeting new dinosaur species, isn't it?

Yeah! I'm glad I met spiky and found out all about his

Cool horns!

Good. I'm glad, too, buddy.

[Squawk] I love you, mom.

Kids, it's getting late! We really should get back to the

Train station.

When you see a picture of a stygimoloch, what's the first

Action, but there are a lot of animals alive today that have

[Baa] a lot of them lock horns

Strongest. Other times, horns are used to show off, to make

The animal look bigger, but the short, sharp horns of

Stygimoloch are most like the horns of mountain goats. These

Goats use their horns to butt into the side of other mountain

Goats, and it's possible that stygimoloch used their horns to

Do the same thing. What do you think? Hmm. I wonder what it

Would be like to have horns.

Yeah! Dad's taking us fishing for the first time!

I know. I hope I'll be ok at fishing. I don't have a beak.

Don't worry, buddy. You're my son. Pteranodons fish, so

Beak, but you've got great eyes and sharp teeth, and don't

[Train whistle blows] the engineer loves to toot

The whistle.

How does it work?

See, he pulls down the chain that moves this lever, and that

Lets the steam out through the little hole, and that makes it

Whistle.

All the parts work together.

[Whistle blows] [caw]

That whistle gets me every time!

[Whistles like train whistle] you're a very talented

Pteranodon, tiny. You sounded just like the real whistle.

Oh, would you look at the time? We're due at the big pond

In minutes. All aboard!

All right, team. This is the fish we pteranodons love to

Catch and love to eat! So gather round. Let's break it

Down. Let's huddle by the puddle. First, you fly out over

The water until you spot where the fish are coming up.

Uh, but, dad, I don't have wings, so I can't fly.

Well, I've been thinking about that, son, and here's

What I know about you. You've got really great eyesight, so

You can climb up high and spot where the fish are coming up in

The water.

Cool!

Good! Now we have a spotter.

Rest of you, listen up.

Step one, I fly out over the water.

[Squawking] hey, dad! I see some fish

Over there.

Good job, spotter! Now I see them! Step two, I hold steady,

Flapping my wings and watching the water. I pick out a fish,

Take careful aim. Step , I drop down and scoop up that

Fish! Hoo hoo!

[Gasp] ta-da!

Yeah! That was awesome!

That was awesome, dad!

That was so good!

Shh, shh, shh. Not too loud, kids. It scares away the fish.

Ohh!

Ok, shiny. You're first up.

Go ahead. We'll watch. Buddy, how's our lookout?

The fish have moved over there now.

Ooh. Look at me. I'm gonna catch so many fish!

Heh heh. Way to go, shiny.

[Inhales] ugh!

That's ok, tiny. You just dove a little too soon, so the

Fish got away. Fly up and try again.

They're over there now, tiny! Ha ha ha!

Ugh!

It's ok, tiny. Not everyone gets it on the first try. You

Know, when I was a kid, I wanted to catch fish just as

Bad as you do, and I couldn't get it at first.

♪ Shiny is the fish-catching queen ta-da ♪

She caught another one! Ugh!

Tiny, now you're gonna figure it out. With a little

Patience and practice, you'll get there. Don, you're up!

[Splash] hey, buddy. Let's go look

For nuts or something.

Nuts?

For, um, my nut collection.

Um, ok. Dad, we'll be back in a jiff!

Uh, ok, buddy. I'll be the spotter while you're gone.

Bbbll! All right, team. Uh, who's next?

Look. Here's one.

A nut. Aren't we looking for nuts?

No. I didn't know that fishing would be hard! And

Shiny and don are both better at it than me. Ugh!

Well, why don't you talk to dad about it? I bet he's got

Some great ideas.

I don't want to tell him. I want to figure it out on my

Own. I want to be great at catching fish!

[Whistles like train whistle] [caw]

That's funny. I heard the dinosaur train, but I don't see

The dinosaur train.

Whoa! I sounded like the whistle on the dinosaur train

[Caw] hey, tiny.

I just thought of a great way to catch fish.

Yeah, together. Come on!

All right. Huddle up, gather round. Let's break it down.

Ok, ok, but what's the plan?

Oh, right. The plan. While I wait here in the shallow part

Of the pond, you fly out to the deeper part where all the fish

Are.

Then what?

Then you fly low over the fish and then toot like the

Dinosaur train's whistle.

Why?

Well, remember dad said that if we're too loud we scare away

All the fish.

Oh.

So you scare the fish over to the shallow end, where I'll

Be, and then we grab them.

We grab them?

The fish. Grab them, well, with your beak, and I'll use my

Teeth and my arms.

Ha ha! Ok. Get ready, buddy!

Ready?

[Whistles] [whistles]

[Inhales] [whistles]

Whoa!

Tiny caught a fish? Wow!

Heh heh! Tiny and buddy both caught a fish. They worked

Together as a team.

Yeah!

Awesome!

So good!

Wait! We shouldn't make so much noise. It will scare away

The fish.

Oh, ho ho! Forget it!

We've caught enough fish for today. Go ahead and cheer all

You want!

Yeah!

We all caught fish!

Go, team pteranodon!

Yeah!

[Whistles] ha ha ha!

[Coughs] ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!

Ha ha ha! You should have see them, hon. Buddy and tiny

Are quite a team. They found a new way to catch fish.

Yep! We worked together!

Oh, I'm so proud of you, buddy and tiny. Rawwrr.

I tried and tried, but even with a beak, I couldn't catch a

Fish if I tried all week, but buddy listened, and he's never

Mean.

I said, "let's work together as a team."

And we figured it out!

The pelican that catches fish almost the same way we

Think our pteranodon pals did, diving into the water from

Above and scooping up fish with their long beaks.

Did you know that the dinosaur train travels

Everywhere in the mesozoic era?

Let's look at the map. There was the triassic, jurassic, and

Cretaceous time periods. Let's visit the jurassic. It was a

Warm, damp climate full of both jungles and forests. The

First-known birds and many of the biggest dinosaurs like

Stegosaurus lived in the jurassic, and that's just one

Of the stops on the dinosaur train!

Time for a tiny ditty!

And that means fish!
