Hello, folks. It's me the conductor. Today, the

Pteranodon family will take the train under the sea to meet the

Amazing elasmosaurus, so come on along with me on the

Dinosaur train. All aboard!

[Whistle blows] ♪ dinosaur train ♪

♪ Once upon a time there was a mom

Her name was mrs. Pteranodon sitting on her nest

She heard a scratching and said... ♪

Oh, boy! My eggs are hatching!

♪ One by one her kids popped free

Baby pteranodons , , ♪

I'll name you tiny, shiny, and don.

♪ But tiny said... ♪ Wait! There's one more, mom!

♪ Last little baby was a different size

With teeth and a tail and big green eyes

He didn't look anything like the rest ♪

What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?

♪ But dear, old mrs. Pteranodon said... ♪

Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom. You may be

Different, but we're all creatures. All dinosaurs have

Different features. Come on, buddy. We'll take a vacation.

I'll get us a ticket at pteranodon station. We'll

Travel the world in sunshine and rain and meet all the

Species on the...

I can't believe it! We're taking the dinosaur train under

The ocean!

I don't get it! How does the train go under the ocean?

Well, kids, the train goes through a tunnel that goes down

Under the water. It's made of glass, so we'll be able to see

Everything around us.

Ooh! You mean, we'll see all the fish?

Yep!

Hooray! I love fish!

And then, we'll arrive in an underwater train station. It's

Like a big, glass cave.

Whoa! A tunnel and a cave!

This is gonna be the best trip ever!

[Cheering] underwater!

Hey, buddy. That wasn't your usual buddy cheer. Aren't you

Excited to go under the ocean?

Well, sure, tiny. I'm always glad to go on the dinosaur

Train, but maybe I'm more of a land kind of dinosaur. I don't

See how there could be much to see down there.

What? There's lots to see down there. It's like a whole

Other world.

You can dive and swim and fly over the ocean. I'm just

Saying it's probably more of a pteranodon thing.

Ha ha ha! Oh, buddy, you just wait.

[Train whistle blows] here comes the dinosaur

Train!

[Squawk] and look, kids!

Whoa! It's pulling a new car!

Why, that's right, buddy.

It's the aqua car for carrying our sea-going creatures like

Elasmosaurus.

Like me! Hi. I'm elmer elasmosaurus!

Hi, elmer!

We're the pteranodon family.

Hello, pteranodon family!

Ready for some underwater adventure?

Yes!

All rightie, then! All aboard!

[Whistle blows] hang onto your hats, folks.

We're heading out to sea!

Ooh!

[Squawk] it's like we're flying over the

Water.

That's right, shiny, but with all the comforts of the

Dinosaur train.

Mr. Conductor, can you tell me what it's gonna be like

Under the ocean?

Well, I could tell you, buddy, but how's about I sing

It to you?

Yeah! A song!

♪ Oh, we're going to the ocean

Gonna have some fun gonna introduce some sea life

To everyone gonna check out some creatures

That we never met and compare some features

That we haven't seen yet so come on along with me

While the dinosaurs are on the land

And breathing the air there's a whole other world

Down under there yeah, we're going in the ocean

Gonna take a peek we'll be doing some exploring

Thank you, thank you very much. Ahem. Now, buddy, to be

Specific, today's undersea adventure will take us to

Elasmosaurus reef station in the middle of our own western

Interior sea to meet some local cretaceous creatures called

Elasmosaurus.

Hey! There's one of those in the aqua car right now.

You're absolutely right, buddy, and if you want, you

Kids can go back and talk to him. He's very friendly.

Oh! Can we, mom?

Please!

[Squawk] sure, and then come right back!

Hello, laura the giganotosaurus!

Hello, kids.

Have you met the elasmosaurus in the new aqua

Car?

Oh. Elmer? He's right over there.

You mean, me?

Hello, elmer!

Elmer, this is buddy, shiny, and don, and I'm tiny!

Pleased to meet you.

Are you riding the train to elasmosaurus reef station?

I sure am. That's where my family lives. I've been

Traveling on the dinosaur train to visit other oceans.

Heh heh. Wait! There are other oceans?

Yeah, don! Lots of oceans.

The world is full of them. I've become interested in oceans.

Some are deeper, some are colder, some are warmer, some

Are saltier, some are even different colors.

I like oceans, too!

I like diving into them to catch fish. That's what we

Pteranodons do.

How about you, buddy?

Me? I'm a t. Rex. I'm a land animal. I've never been under

The ocean before.

Oh, you're in for a treat.

Wait till you see what's under the water. You'll love it!

Really? It just looks flat.

It doesn't look like there's anything down below there.

Oh, there is. Stick with me, buddy. You'll see the sea.

Your home may be under the sea, but I observe that you can

Breathe air just like us.

Right. All elasmosaurus are air breathers.

Does that mean you can run around on the land?

With these flippers? I can barely get around. Naw. I don't

Like to be on land.

Heh heh! That's funny. I don't really like to be in the

Water.

What?! Buddy, how can you not love the water? I love

Everything about water--being wet, playing in it.

Ha ha ha!

Swimming in it, fishing in it.

I love fish!

So elasmosaurus and pteranodons both love fish, but

We're really different, too.

Elmer has a really long neck.

Yep! More than half of me is neck. Hey! How you doing?

[Giggling] I have a hypothesis!

You mean, an idea you can test?

Yep! Since land animals like brachiosaurus use their long

Necks to reach plants that are way up high, maybe you can eat

Tall underwater plants.

Hmm. I'm not sure if that's why I have a long neck, buddy,

But my long neck tells me all right! The tunnel is coming up.

You're right, elmer. I see it, too.

Time tunnel approaching, folks, and this one will take

Us under the sea!

[Squawk] come on, you guys. Let's go

Back and sit with mom and dad.

Next stop elasmosaurus reef station under the cretaceous

Western interior sea.

Whoa!

[Squawk] pretty neat, huh, buddy?

I had no idea how amazing it is under the sea. Look at all

These fish. There must be as many kinds of animals in the

Ocean as there are on land.

Ha ha ha! I told him, but he wouldn't listen.

Ha ha ha!

[Squawk] look! They're huge!

Wow!

Whoo-hoo!

Neato!

This place is so cool!

Hey! There's my family! Hi!

Hey, elmer! Welcome home!

[Thunk] [gasp]

Whee! This is fun! Look out below!

Come on, elmer. Let's get some lunch!

Watch this, you guys!

Ohh!

[Squawk] there they are!

Whoa!

I agree! What a fishing technique!

I've got to try that when we get home.

[Squawk] don, pteranodons aren't deep

Divers like elasmosaurus.

Yeah, and we sure don't have those kind of necks.

Yeah. Oh, well. This is fun!

Hey, guys! What do you think?

Fantastic! But I guess my hypothesis was wrong. Your long

Neck isn't for eating tall underwater plants. It's for

Fishing.

Ha ha! That's for sure!

[Train whistle blows] ha ha!

There's the train whistle kids! We should get on board.

Hey! You guys swim fast.

So, buddy. Now how do you like it under the sea?

I love it. Today, I met a creature who breathes air like

We do and lives under the ocean.

And they love fish like we do.

And there's lots more to discover, buddy! We can take

The dinosaur train under all the oceans in all the different

Time periods and meet all kinds of different sea creatures.

I can't wait! Let's keep exploring under the sea!

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is

Elasmosaurus.

Elasmosaurus.

Elasmosaurus!

Elasmosaurus.

Elasmosaurus!

Elasmosaurus was a giant marine reptile from the

Cretaceous time period. The word marine means that it lived

In the ocean. Now what do you notice first about elasmosaurus?

It has a really long neck.

Absolutely. The neck of elasmosaurus was over feet

Long. That's more than half the length of its body. Can you

Think of a dinosaur that has a long neck?

Brachiosaurus.

That's right. Brachiosaurus and elasmosaurus both had long

Necks even though one lived in the water and one lived on the

Land. Scientists think that the long neck of elasmosaurus

Helped it hunt for fish.

Let's go fishing!

Wow! You guys are great swimmers. Because of its large

Size, elasmosaurus was probably a slow swimmer, so it may have

Swum under large schools of fish and then used its long

Neck to reach up and grab its prey with those long, sharp

Teeth.

Whoa!

Ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries.

Dinosaurs were big!

Tiny, look at all these dinosaurs.

Oh! They're huge!

Someday, I'm gonna be one of the biggest carnivores on land!

I wonder who really is the biggest dinosaur.

Good question.

Big he is, huge!

Whoa! That's one big dinosaur!

Pteranodon family is having all the species in the neighborhood

Over for a big block party, so come on along with me on the

Dinosaur train. All aboard!

I can't get over your magnificent view of the sea,

Mrs. Pteranodon.

Yes. Isn't it nice? It seems a little different every day.

I am so glad we moved to pteranodon terrace. I can't

Wait to meet all the other species that live around here.

[Squawk] what if our families threw a

Block party and invited the other creatures from the

Neighborhood? That way, you could meet them all at once.

What a wonderful idea, a dinosaur block party!

We're gonna have a dinosaur block party? That sounds like

Fun.

We could all compare features.

And play games.

And have contests!

And eat bugs!

But aren't the bugs our neighbors, too?

I guess. I never thought about it before.

Enough about bugs! We've got a party to plan, and I love

Parties!

Let's have the party on the beach! It's a great place for a

Picnic. Block party! Block party!

Block party! Block party!

Did someone say, "block party"?

Yeah!

We're inviting all the species from the neighborhood.

Great. Uh, are they here yet?

Nope. We have to actually invite them first.

Hey! Let's go to the train station and tell the conductor

About it. He can help us tell everyone that lives at the big

Pond.

That's a wonderful idea.

After all, the big pond is right down the coast, so those

Creatures are our neighbors, too.

Yeah, like adam adocus!

And eugene euoplocephalus!

And patricia palaeobatrachus! She's a frog!

And the bees!

The bees?

Well, we can ask them.

They're all welcome to our block party.

Can I help somehow with the food maybe?

Oh, yeah! What kind of food should we have?

I'm not sure, buddy. There's so much food we'll have to find

When you consider all the different creatures. Some are

Herbivores.

Like lambeosaurus. We eat plants.

And some are carnivores.

Like t. Rexes! We eat meat.

We could make the party a potluck.

What's a potluck?

Well, that means all the different guests bring their

Own favorite foods to the picnic.

That way, we'll be able to learn about each creature by

The food they bring.

What a great idea!

We just show up! Ha ha ha!

I love it!

Come on, team! Let's fly to the station and spread the word

About our big block party!

Block party! Block party!

Block party! Whoo!

Ha ha ha!

A dinosaur block party, you say?

Yep, and you're all invited.

We were hoping that you could tell everyone at the big

Pond about it.

Our next stop. It's right in our neighborhood.

And don't forget to tell him it's going to be potluck!

That means each guest brings their own food to the picnic!

What fun. I'll bring some insects.

I'll bring fruits and nuts and some meat!

[Squawk] laura, will you come to our

Wow! Pretty much everybody from the neighborhood came to

Our block party.

What about adam adocus?

I'm a-coming! I'm a turtle.

We move very slowly.

Hi, adam!

Ohh! Heh heh heh! Oh, hi, buddy and tiny.

Everyone's gone down to the beach. Come on, adam.

[Squawk] uh, I'll be right down.

This is so great! Everyone's eating their own favorite food!

Yep! The carnivores brought meat, and the herbivores

Brought plants!

And the troodons brought both. We're omnivores.

Even the bees found something to eat. They're

Eating the nectar from inside the flowers.

Yeah! The bees help the flowers grow, and then the

Flowers and plants feed the herbivores.

I have a hypothesis. The different plants and creatures

That live here in our neighborhood all depend on each

Other to live.

Excellent hypothesis, buddy, and the creatures living in

This neighborhood all share the place they live in together.

It's called a habitat.

A habitat!

Good word!

It is a good word. To make a habitat work, you need everyone

From the tiniest little plant to the biggest meat-eater. We

All have an important part to play in what we call our

Ecosystem.

Ecosystem! An even better word.

Oh! Ohh! Ggg, ggg, ggg, ggg.

Hey! Who's ready to play some games?

We are!

Um, has the picnic started?

Actually, adam, we're about to have a race.

Good. Count me in. Just kidding. Ha ha ha.

[All laughing] bbbrrr!

Ok. Who in our habitat is the fastest runner?

I'd say the theropods like you, buddy, and daphne and the

Troodons.

We've got toe claws for traction.

[Squawk] some creatures in this habitat

Are fast fliers. Why don't we make it a running and flying

Relay race?

Yeah!

Ready, relay racers? First, the runners race across the

Beach and touch your teammate's hand, and then the fliers fly

Back here to the finish line.

Got it!

On your mark, get set, goooo!

Ta-da!

Ooh, boy!

Good race, shiny.

Aw, I ate too many insects just before the race. Hard to

Win a running race on a full stomach!

Hey! Now how about the fish-eaters in our habitat show

Off our diving skills?

Hi! Hope I'm in time for the diving part of the program.

Hi, jess!

[Giggling] hey! I see some fish over

There.

[Cheering] let's play what neighborhood

Creature am i? I'll start. I have a flat beak, and I reach

Way up into the trees to eat leaves, and I have a crest that

Hoots.

That would be our local hadrosaur, a lambeosaurus.

That would be me!

[Hoot] my turn. I'm covered all

Over with bony armor, so nothing can hurt me, and I'm

Really good at dinoball.

That's our local ankylosaur eugene euoplocephalus.

Heh heh heh! I'm covered with bony armor all right.

My turn! I live in this neighborhood. I hunt for food

Every day, and I am an important part of its habitat.

Hmm.

Hmm?

Ooh!

Hmm.

Hmm.

Is it all of us?

Ding ding! You are correct, sir, and it's always been this

Way, in the triassic, jurassic, and cretaceous. Every

Neighborhood in every time period has its own ecosystem

Where every creature plays his or her part.

It's true. I just got to eat trees.

But you can't eat all of them because if all the trees

Are gone it will cause problems for the other neighbors.

Heh heh heh! You bet.

After mr. Lambeosaurus ate the tree I was living in, I had

To go and find another one. If he ate all of them, I'd have

Nowhere to live!

Oh, come on, you two. Hug it out.

[Sniffing] aw!

I'm glad we could all have this little talk. You know,

This reminds me of a song.

A song?! Sing it, please!

Oh, I don't know. Everyone's full of food and all pooped out

From running around and playing games. You don't want to hear

Me.

Come on! Sing it! Please!

♪ Well, a bunch of different species

Of dinosaur came looking for a party

On the sandy shore some came swimming

Some came running then we all sat

And learned a little something about our habitat

We're having a ♪ ♪ block party

Everybody's part of this big habitat ♪

♪ Everyone's got features that are good for surviving ♪

♪ Like some of us are really good at swooping

And diving ♪ ♪ and some of us are better

At sneaking and hiding ♪ ♪ we all fit together ♪

♪ Like I like this ♪ ♪ and I like that ♪

♪ We're part of a big habitat it's all good

Wow, it will be hearty when we all come a-rockin'

It's you and you and me block party

You like this and I like that

Everybody's part of this big habitat

Yes, everybody's part of this big habitat ♪

Yeah!

[Cheering] hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the

Paleontologist, and this is an ecosystem. Pteranodon terrace

Is an ecosystem. In fact everywhere you look in nature,

You'll find ecosystems. An ecosystem is made up of the

Local plants, animals, and other organisms that link

Together to make a circle of life. The circle starts with

Plants, which get their energy from the sun. Herbivores eat

The plants, and then carnivores eat the herbivores. The remains

Of all these plants and animals then become food for insects

And other tiny creatures, which make food for more plants. This

Happened back in the time of the dinosaurs, and it's still

Happening today. Everything in an ecosystem is connected to

Everything else in a circle of life.

Circle of life!

In an ecosystem, everything becomes food for everything

Else. Ok. Get outside, get into nature, and make your own

Discoveries.

Did you know that the dinosaur train travels

Everywhere in the mesozoic era?

Let's look at them map. There was the triassic, jurassic, and

Cretaceous time periods. Let's visit the cretaceous. All kinds

Of sea creatures lived during this time period. Many large

Fish, including sharks, and long-necked reptiles like

Elasmosaurus lived in the cretaceous oceans, and that's

Just one of the stops on the dinosaur train.
