All right, all right.

Let's get moving,
let's get moving.

We got a lot of work
to do up there.

How many times have I told you
not to smoke around the paint, huh?

All right, all right.

You the crew that's working
up on the 16th floor today?

Oh, no. No, no, no,
no. We just came here to practice, okay?

Oh, that's very funny.
But make it fast, huh?

This is a busy dock. All right.

The service elevator's
back there.

All right,
you heard the man. You heard the man.

Let's get going now. Okay.

I think this is your stop, lady.

Mmm. Mmm.

Oh, Charlie, do I have to?

I'm not even supposed to
be there for another hour yet.

Tough. But look, I'm gonna
be late if I don't get it in gear.

[GROANS] Damn.

If you hadn't fixed
that engine, you know,

we would still be out in the middle
of the Catalina Channel right now.

Yeah. And in big trouble.

Now, come on, move it.

Killjoy.

Time!

Hey, look, babe,
I think that's gonna have to keep you going

till tomorrow night, okay?

Okay.

See you later.

Bye.

Good morning, Miss Adams.
How was your weekend?

Mmm. Same as usual.

Oh. Well...

It was fantastic.

[LAUGHS]

[sums]

We've got a training drill
scheduled for 1400 hours...

As I was saying, we've got a
training drill scheduled for 1400 hours

and I'd like to have
the squad back

well ahead of time to
do a little housekeeping.

You guys dismissed.

Charlie,

you're kind of getting to be
an expert at cutting it fine.

Yes, sir.

Personally, I think
you're pushing your luck.

Yes, sir.

Get a haircut.

Okay, what was it this time?

We went to Catalina
for the weekend again.

And? And the engine broke down,

and we were
drifting half the night.

You ought to sell that
boat and get married, man.

Married guys never have a
problem getting to work on time.

Well, see. Now, that's what I
call a real heavy recommendation.

Anyway, I already asked her.

No kidding! What did she say?

She wants to
think about it. But...

Oh, Charlie,
you're in real bad trouble.

Yeah, for what you got
going for you,

the more time Sue's
got to think about it,

less likely she is to say yes.

That's very funny.

Hey, listen, you wanna work the
squad today with Dave? I'm kind of b*at.

That's funny. No way, pal.

There's a Base Station
meeting scheduled today.

And personally,
I'd rather hang hose.

Well, thanks a lot.

Come on,
let's check out the equipment.

Anyway, you can always
sleep through a meeting.

That's true.

[SIGHS] Now don't forget.

Right here at 12:00 noon,
all right?

And try not to
be late for a change.

If I have to park the car,
I got to go all around...

I know. I know. I'll be here.

I'll be here. I promise.

I've heard that before.

Uh, look, I've got to
get going or I'll be late.

Noon sharp. Right here.

Don't I get a kiss?

We'll see.

Good morning, Mike.
Good morning, Mrs. Davis.

Nice day, isn't it?

Morning, Mr. Warren. Mmm-hmm.

Hold that elevator.

EVELYN: Morning, Alice.
Good morning, Mrs. Davis.

Oh, you're going the wrong way.

I mean, they finally finished
your new office over the weekend.

Sue's already moved in.
Of course, we all helped.

Thanks, Alice.

Let's just see
how well they did by me.

Good morning, Sue.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Wait till you see
the throne room.

Any calls?

New York, Mrs. Davis.

J.D. has already called
twice for you this morning.

Get him back.

Okay.

WELLS: Good morning, Mr. Warren.

Oh. Has that shipment
arrived from London yet?

I was just checking it out, sir.

Never mind. I'll take
care of that myself.

I want to make sure that we
got everything that I paid for.

Personally.

All right, all right,
we've got all those walls to wash down.

We don't have all day. Come on,
move it. Come on.

Hey, who's in charge here?

What's your problem, Mac?

You can't leave all this junk in the
hallway. You're gonna have to move it.

Move it where?
We're painting in here.

Look, that's your problem.

But get it out of the hallway.
And I mean right now.

Okay, 0 Kay-Okay, 0 Kay-

All right.

Okay, let's move it all
in that room.

That ought to satisfy him.

Okay, I want everything
in here now.

Clean sweep.
There's plenty of room.

JOHNNY: LA, Squad 51,10-7
to Rampart General Hospital.

DISPATCHER: Squad 51.

You know, this is really
exciting. Another meeting.

What's this one
supposed to be about?

Disaster planning, I think.

Ah, disaster planning.
Hey, that's really neat.

What are we supposed
to be planning?

How to take care of them
or how to cause them?

That's a good line.

Why don't you use it
at the meeting?

Well, what are we supposed to...

What are we supposed to
do? Except what we always do?

Only more of it.

I don't know. But maybe if you manage
to stay awake during the meeting,

you might find out.

Stay awake during the meeting?

When did I ever fall
asleep during a meeting?

Last meeting.

JOHNNY: I mean
other than that one...

For crying out loud,
we were fighting a fire all night long.

Of course I was tired.

WOMAN ON PA: Dr. Reed.
Treatment room three.

Dr. Reed. Treatment room three.

You free, Doctor?

Oh, not exactly. I've got a Base
Station meeting in about 10 minutes.

Well, we've got County 45
bringing in a traffic victim.

Say, Joe.

Would you cover me? I've got a Base
Station meeting in about 10 minutes.

Sure, no sweat.
All right. Thanks a lot.

He's intense, isn't he?

Especially about disasters.
He's got a thing about them.

Well, if he isn't careful,
he's likely to become one himself.

It's the well-known
young doctor syndrome, Dix.

Who knows,
he might even accomplish something

before this job grinds him down.

And that's the well-known
old doctor syndrome.

Except you don't
wear it very well, Joe.

I guess.
What have we got coming in?

TC.

How's it going, Mike?

Quiet.

They are all just about in and they
haven't started drifting out for lunch yet.

Hey, how about
giving me a break, huh?

Take the desk for

Hey, Mike. You better
start thinking about your job.

Come on. I'll be right back.

Mike... Now, don't worry.

Okay. 10 minutes and that's it.

You're a prince. Yeah, I bet.

So, anyway,
we had a really fantastic weekend.

It was too bad you
guys couldn't make it.

Boy, on a sailboat.
You've got to be kidding.

Why, the superman I'm married
to gets seasick in a bathtub.

Enough of the trivia. Did he?

He did. He asked me.

Well?

Well, you know, I'm supposed
to be thinking about it, but...

But you're really
gonna do it, huh?

You're really gonna marry
a fireman?

You say that like he had
three heads or something.

What's the matter
with firemen anyway?

You think I'd be better off married to
some out-of-work actor like my boss is?

Well, I guess
you've got a point.

But still...

Hey, listen,
speaking of my boss,

I better get back before she
starts playing Bette Davis on me.

See you later. Okay.

And, Sue. Yes'?

Congratulations. I guess.

Thanks a lot.

Yes, J.D. I understand.

And naturally,
I'm very flattered.

No, no. I won't hang you up.

I'll give you an answer by tomorrow,
one way or another.

Right.

Bye.

[VOCALIZING]

BOSS: Come on, snap it up!

We need some more
thinner in here for the gray.

Okay, okay!

Everybody's in a hurry.
Everybody's in a hurry.

Come on, will you move it?

I'm coming!

Here you are. Will that be all for now,
Mrs. Davis?

Something wrong?

Is there anything
I can do for you?

I wish there were.

JD. Wants me back 'm New York.

Oh. Well, shall I make the
usual reservations for you then?

No. Not exactly.

This isn't the usual
business trip.

He wants me
back there permanently.

It would mean a major promotion.

Hey,
that's great. Congratulations.

Look, I gotta tell you,
you have really earned it.

Well, there's just one
small problem involved.

What exactly am I supposed
to do with my husband?

The star.

Oh.

[sums]

Magnificent. Simply magnificent.

This collection is gonna
make me a fortune.

I think we'd better increase the
insurance on this right away, George.

How much are we covered for now?

I'm not sure, Mr. Warren.

We're still covered
from the London end.

Now, George,
that's not possible.

I specifically
asked you to call...

You specifically told me that it
was completely covered from London

until the first
of the month, sir.

Mmm-hmm. And what exactly is today's date,
George?

Why, it's the, uh...

It's the first. Yes.

Which means, you idiot... Look, I'll get
our broker on the phone right away, sir.

Yes, George, you do that.

And pray, pray that nothing
happens to this collection

before it is completely covered.

Yes, sir.

[DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES]

Well, don't think
that impresses me.

It's still a waste of time.

I thought Colby made
some good points in there.

Yeah, and they all could've
been covered in a one-page memo.

That's right.

Quit complaining, will you?
It beats cleaning the station.

Besides,
you got a chance to catch up on your rest.

Our lover boy here
had quite a weekend.

Would you knock it off, Dave?

Sorry. I forgot.

He's been sincere
this weekend, fellas.

He even asked Sue to marry him.

Is that right? Well,
congratulations. Uh-huh.

I wish I could
find a girl like that.

So do I.

You know, I wish you'd get
married and give us all a rest.

[ALL LAUGHING]

Charlie, come here for a second.

Does Sue have a sister?

You know, we've had two and a half hours,
we haven't had one run.

We're about due. Oh, Roy,
don't say things like that.

Please, don't even think them.

[EXPLODING]

What was that? I don't know.

Well, go and see.

Hurry!

Oh. My God!

Oh, my God!
I'll call the Fire Department.

Hurry!

Come on! Hurry!

Oh, my God,
they're dead. They're all dead.

We're trapped in here.

We're trapped in here.

[STAMMERING] We better go
into your office.

Come on. Come on! We're trapped.

[ALL COUGHING]

Come on,
let's use the other stairs!

[EXCLAIMS]

My God, you can fry
a hamburger on that door!

What do we do?

We wait.

Well,
I'm sure it was nothing. Nothing at all.

Well,
I think I'll take an early lunch anyway.

What do you want me
to do, Mr. Warren?

Why, just lock
everything up, George.

Lock everything up.

Yes, sir.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO: Station 110,

babe. That's what we're doing.

[SIRENS BLARING]

[HORN BLARING]

Bill, Leslie,
get these damn pipes hooked up over here.

I'm gonna go in
and check it out.

I'll get back to you as
soon as I can. Okay, Mike.

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO: Engine 227,
go up to Station 18.

It's all right, folks,
it's nothing.

Don't worry about anything.

Well, what about the alarm?

It's probably
just a malfunction.

But there's got to
be something going on.

No, it's not.
It's just probably...

Is it a b*mb? Is it a b*mb?

A b*mb? Good heavens, no.
Please, just go on outside.

Look, we'll take
care of it, huh?

Go ahead, folks, huh?
Please, just go ahead.

Coming through here, please.

Guard, what floor is it on?

Oh, beats me. It's probably a false alarm,
anyway. We've had them before.

No. It's for real.

[MEN CHATTERING]

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO: Squad 47,
pull up to Station 51.

Truck 32, pull up to Station 8.

Hey, anybody see any fire?

It's up on the 19th floor.
The whole place is going.

Listen, Bob, take control of the
elevators And get them down here, quick.

You got it.

[EXCLAIMS]

Doesn't help much, huh?

Ah, it's probably shorted out.

DISPATCHER: Engine 45,
pull up to Station 54.

[SIREN WAILING]

DISPATCHER: Truck 89,
pull up to Station 20.

[PEOPLE COUGHING]

What floor is it on?

Uh, this annunciator
and the smoke indicator's

going on and off
like a Christmas tree.

Listen, Dave, Charlie,
you can grab some more equipment.

Get a couple of hose packs.

If you take the lobby control,
I'm gonna see what I can find out.

Okay.

[PHONE RINGING]

We've got the elevators, Cap.

All right.

No, sir. It's not a drill.

What floor is he on?

Six. Look, hang up on him.

Give me a tenant. Somebody on 17,

Have you shut down
the utilities yet?

No, not yet.

Well, get the
air conditioning shut off

and the gas shut off. All right?

Now, the only thing
we want running here

are the elevators
and the lights. Okay.

Hey, Bill. Look, I need somebody
to run the elevators for me.

Can I use one of your men?

You got it. Smitty, go with him.

I think the phones are out.

[SIGHS] Okay, guys, M's go-

[HORNS BLARING]

[MAN CHATTERING ON RADIO]

What are you trying to do?

We've got to get out of here!

What have you got in mind?
You're gonna fly?

We stay here, we're gonna fry.

We stay here till the Fire
Department gets us out.

The building's got
about 80% occupancy.

Yeah, another few minutes, everybody
would've been on their lunch hour.

Look, now let's just
make sure we've got control.

Smitty, take us
back down to two.

Okay, take us up to 17.

All right, men,
we wanna make sure

we keep the south
stairwell clear for evacuation.

I just hope
this thing's above 16.

His girl works on 16.

[COUGHING]

What have you got, Cap?

Don't know yet for sure, Chief.

We're still trying
to establish the location.

Moore's gone up
to 17 to take a look.

All right. I'll set
up a CP outside.

You stay here until 110 reports.

Will do.
You get the elevators yet?

Yeah. Over here. Okay.

Taking long enough.

Beats walking up.

All right, boys.
Let's get them on.

Hey, what's happening?

Just stay calm. We're taking care
of it. Now take this elevator down.

Don't use any of the others.

HT 110 to Battalion 14.

We're on the 17th floor
and above it.

Yeah,
but how many floors above it?

Chief, we'll work our way down
to it through the smoke tower.

We need some men up on 17
to check it out and above it

and make sure
the building's clear.

Squad 51, search on 17.

Truck 20, Truck 31,
search 18 and 19 and above.

HT 110 is still trying
to locate fire below 17.

Hey, slow down. Hold it. Hold it,
hold it. Don't panic.

Just walk. Go around and
take the middle elevator.

The firemen there will
take you all the way down.

And don't panic. Walk.

[PEOPLE CLAMORING]

Move!

Take it easy.
You're gonna be all right.

Don't run, don't run!

Take it easy! Take care of her!

Battalion, HT 110.

Located fire on 16th floor
landing of the stairwell.

It's fully involved.

Tower is blocked for evacuation,
both up and down.

MAN ON RADIO: 10-4, HT 110.

Don't you sit here. Come on. We've
got to close up these air vents, too.

We're gonna die here. I know it.

Maybe. But I'm gonna
give it both feet first.

Now come on. Get up, will you,
and give me some help.

[CRYING]

[ALL CLAMORING]

Calm down, you're gonna be okay.

We're gonna take you down.
Just calm down.

[PEOPLE COUGHING]

Now just wait right here.
You're gonna be all right.

They're gonna be here
in just a minute.

[PEOPLE COUGHING]

Keep direct pressure
on it, all right?

Keep that there. You'll be fine.

Paramedics, let's get these people
out of here as quick as possible.

Joe, come on, come on,
go with me! Grab that hose pipe!

[CRYING]

[PEOPLE COUGHING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

[COUGHING]

I can't breathe.

I know, I know.

I can't get the air vent closed.

Listen, just take it easy.
Just relax.

It not gonna be much longer now.

One way or another.

[COUGHING]

I gotta get down to 16.

What? No way. They'll have
to work their way up from below.

Look, I gotta find Sue, man.

Hey, look, just do your job.

And let everybody else do
theirs. You're supposed to be a pro.

Besides,
they probably all got out by now. Let's go.

How is she?

Possible skull fracture.

Battalion 14, this is Squad 51.

MAN ON RADIO: Squad 51.

We've got about 10 victims
up here on the 17th floor.

We need a triage team
up here fast.

10-4, 51.

Well, you better move her
first and then him, all right?

I know, I know.

Look, Tom, I promise you I'll
have that information for you

by the end of the week, okay?

Now, will you please
let me get off the phone?

I'm up to my ears
on a budget meeting.

Yeah. Okay, thanks.

Sorry, Neil.

Look, I don't disagree
with anything you've said.

We're way short on essentials
for effective disaster operations.

Well,
then... But you've got to understand.

There's no way we can get
an effective budget

for a contingency operation when
we're short of basic necessities

for day-to-day operations
right here in Emergency.

Look, I still think that what
we have is a possibility...

Kel, County Fire's got a major
structure fire at Graymar Plaza.

They've got 10 plus
injuries and more coming.

They're gonna need
a triage team right away.

Okay, okay, uh...

Neil, it's gonna be you, me,
Mike Morton and Jean Wilson.

Dix, you and Joe
handle it from this end.

And I'm gonna need
at least five nurses.

Let's move it.

Doctor, you may have just made your point,
the hard way.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[SIREN WAILING]

MAN ON RADIO: Medical
Alert Center to the triage team.

Yeah. Go ahead, MAC.

I have a preliminary capability
from the nearest hospitals.

Rampart General,
five major and ten minor.

Saint James Bum Ward,
two major and six minor.

University Medical,
four major and seven minor.

Are you all right?

Yeah, I'm all right. I can
walk. It's just my damn wrist.

It's spreading
up the core, boys!

We gotta haul out of here!

Battalion 14, this is Squad 51.

DISPATCHER: Squad 51.

We got the fire
coming up here to 17.

We're got to get
these victims out of here.

10-4, 51. Move them out
to the garage, first level.

Ramparts got
a triage team on the way.

Can you give me
a hand over here?

Truck 14, your assignment's
fire suppression on that floor.

You're 17th Division.

DISPATCHER: Battalion 14,
Engine 36.

I'm sending Engine 31 and

Battalion 14.

Chief, we're sealing off traffic for
you in both directions, each block.

Good. That vacant lot
two blocks north on Camelia.

Yeah.

Well, we may have to evacuate
from the roof by helicopter.

Now, if we do, we'll have to
use that lot as a landing pad.

Now, I want
as many cars as possible

moved off the first level
of that garage.

Right. We'll take care of it.

Right. Thanks.

HOFFMAN: Battalion 14,
Assistant 7.

I'll be there in
five or six minutes.

[ALL COUGHING]

It's on the 16th, huh?

Well, as far as we know, it started there,
but it's moving up the core.

Now, we've got about 100
men here or on the way in.

Now, we're staging off of 14.

You go up and take over
fire suppression and rescue.

Let's hope we can hold it, Sam.

And we don't lose the elevators.

Hey, Chuck,
get this car out of here, will you?

I'll see you, Sam.

[PEOPLE COUGHING]

Hey, you'll have to go outside.

I... I was supposed to meet
my wife here. Not today.

Look, she said she'd
be here at 12:00 noon.

Look, if she's inside,
she's coming out.

We're evacuating everybody. Look,
she's probably outside already.

I've been outside.
She's nowhere around.

I've got to find her!
Don't you understand...

You can't stay here!

Let me just go up... Look,
we've got a problem! Please!

Now, just leave.
Just go outside, okay?

Come on, folks, come on.
Please, please. Huh?

Okay, that's it,
folks. Come on. Nice and easy. That's it.

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

LA, Battalion 14. We're gonna
need about six more ambulances,

a copter for roof evacuation and
every spare air bottle that you can send.

DISPATCHER: Battalion 14. We've
got a major brush fire at Val Verde.

All copters committed.
Will advise Division One.

Battalion 14.

This way!

I'm Dr. Brackett, with the triage
team. Where's the command post?

Straight ahead, Doc.
All right. Thanks.

Left, please. This way!

This pretty well strips
this part of the county.

If we need any more men,

it's going to take them 40
minutes to an hour to get here.

Well, if we can contain it,
we can knock it down in 15 to 20 minutes.

Yeah.

Hey, over here!

It's the building
superintendent.

Listen,
you go on and take over the staging area.

LA,
Assistant 7. I'm taking over 110's fire.

Any word yet on a copter?

DISPATCHER: Assistant 7, LA.

Division One has notified
us that the Coast Guard

has assigned Helicopter 1442

to assist in the
evacuation of the rooftop.

HOFFMAN: Assistant 7.

Dr. Brackett, triage team.

Hoffman,
Division Assistant Chief.

We figured you could
set up in the garage.

The first level.
Right over there.

Don't they have
a first aid room?

Yes, but it's too small.

Now, there's plenty of room in the
garage with access to the elevators.

"The only problem is there's only
a 6'7" clearance over the ramp.

And some of the ambulances
can't make it.

All right, we can work around
that. How many casualties?

We don't have an exact
count yet. About 20.

A lot of smoke inhalations.

Okay, I'm probably gonna
need some lights down here.

And I need something to
cover the floors with.

I'll get them for you.

Anything else you need,
you can call me. Thanks, Chief.

Listen,
I'd like you to stick with me. Right.

Has there been any new construction
since we surveyed the place?

Yeah,
but I think I've got it all right here.

All right. Come on.

Right.

Base, Assistant 7. The triage
team is setting up in the garage.

They're going to need four
salvage covers and six lights.

DISPATCHER: 10-4.

[SIREN WAILING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

Look, Operator,
you don't understand.

It's an emergency.
Would you try it again?

No answer?

Thank you, Operator.

Hey, Joe! Pull that darn hose
and knock that down in there.

Rampart Emergency, stat.
Burn Ward's been notified.

Very good.

[MAN COUGHING] Easy does it.

MIKE: All right,
try not to cough. Try not to cough.

That's good.

Breathe slowly. Breathe slowly,
sir. You're better off...

KELLY: Okay, fellas,
we'll take it from here.

Mike, you want to give me a hand? Will do,
will do.

Just take him and put him
on O2. I think he'll be okay.

Squad 110 is available.

DISPATCHER: Squad 110. Report
to the 16th floor and assist.

I've got to lock up.

Oh.

All right, look, go down here in
the emergency stairway, all right?

Go up to the roof and a copter
will take you out of here, okay?

That should be exciting.

shows all the elevators have stopped.

Assistant 7.

Battalion 21, it looks
like the elevators are out.

MAN: I heard.

We won't be able to send you
anymore men for about 10 minutes.

Can you handle this thing
on 18 with what you've got?

Yeah, I think we can manage.

I'm sending Engine 19 with
two two-and-a-halfs up there.

I'll have Engine 27
relieve on the 17th.

10-4, Battalion 21.

LA, Assistant 7. We have
fires on the 17th and 18th floors.

And all the elevators
have gone out.

We're going to need eight
engines and three more trucks,

for stairwell support
and more air bottles.

Start another move-up.

"USP AT CHER". Assistant 7.

JOHNNY: You up? Yeah.

Give me some time. I'm gonna have
to wedge this door open. Just a sec.

Okay, door open.

All right.

Get it.

Give me a hand up.

Well, that's that.

Okay.

When we get out,
I'll hand it to you.

And you can hand it to me.

Yeah.

All right, let me...

Good grief!

Hope the roof holds on this one.

Better you get her typed and cross-matched,
then up to X-ray.

Severe smoke inhalation.
Let's get him intubated.

Yes, Doctor.

[WOMAN CHATTERING]

Evelyn.

Evelyn! Oh, Evelyn.

[GASPING] What are you doing?

I'm sorry. I thought...

DAVE: Roy! Johnny! What?

Anybody seen Charlie?

ROY: We just got here ourselves.

He was supposed to
finish searching 16.

Squad 110, this is Squad 51.
Do you read?

[METALLIC CLANGING]

Squad 110. This is Squad 51.
Do you read?

Just go on in.

Charlie! Roy! In here.

All right, take it easy, man.
Okay, okay, okay.

Easy, easy, easy. You all right?

The office,
Dave. Check the office. Hey... Sue.

Check the office.

DAVE: He's already in there. Take it easy,
man. Take it easy.

CHARLIE: Oh, damn it, my arm.
Take it easy.

There's somebody here.

Battalion 21, this is Squad 51.

We got three victims here on

DISPATCHER: Negative, 51.

We're gonna have to mule
them down the stairwell.

All right.

Come on, take it easy.
You're okay.

[LAUGHING] Can't leave you
alone for a minute, can I?

How is he?

I've seen mugging victims
worse. Let's get out of here.

Okay, Trish. It's in.
Start him on 100% O2.

Get him on the respirator and
get blood gases and a chest X-ray.

Yes, Doctor.

She'll be okay.
Give her some O2.

Miss... Miss, can you help me?

I don't know.
What's your problem?

I can't...

Who's in charge?

Look, we're kind of rushed,
you'll have to excuse me.

Wait! Miss,
please... Who can I talk to?

COLBY: Look, the helicopter's
bringing a man down with emphysema.

He's going to need
low flow oxygen.

I want you to tell me when
he's on the ramp, okay?

All right, go.

Uh, excuse me!

Do... Do you have anybody
by the name of Davis here?

Oh, I... I don't know.

Evelyn. A young girl...

A young woman in a blue blazer..

No. Look, I'm sorry. Hey!
Get that out of the way there!

[STUTTERS]

Okay, you can take her
now. She's going to be okay.

ROY: Doc! Yeah.

What have you got, Roy?
We're stretched pretty thin.

We got two inhalation victims.
We can take care of them.

We got a slightly
bashed-up paramedic.

I'll take care of him.

What's happening?

The ceiling fell in on him.

I don't think
there's anything serious,

but he does have
a sore left shoulder.

All right. All right,
we'll take care of him.

Thanks, Doc.

Hey, take it easy, pal.
Everything's gonna be okay.

Sue, Dave, is she all right?

She's all right. She's right over
there. Johnny's got her on O2.

Nothing but a slight
case of firefighter's lung.

Thanks, man.

See you later, pal.

How's it coming?

Not bad. Not bad at all.

I could sure use a bath.

Join the club.

It was horrible up there.

Charlie. Is Charlie all right?

Yeah, the Doc's
working on him now.

How bad is he?

Oh,
I'd diagnose it as the week off on.

You know what that is? It's
paid vacation. You'll like it.

They're in fine shape.

You might get
a new set of vitals now.

Just keep her on O2.

Okay, take he: To Dr. Sankara,
mom three.

Get her to X-ray, stat.

Darling.

Are you all right?

I'm going out of my mind.

I stood you up again, didn't I?

It doesn't matter.

But it's for the last time.

I swear to you,
it's for the last time.

I love you.

You checked the aid station in the garage,
huh?

Yeah. No sign of him.

Man, I'm beginning
to worry about Mike.

I haven't seen him
since the fire started.

Where did he go?

I don't know.

He asked me to relieve
him for about 10 minutes.

Hey,
I bet he's hitting the bottle again.

Sleeping on the job.

You know, they almost
caught him last week.

Do you think he could've
started this fire?

Oh, no. He doesn't even smoke.

He just finds some place empty
and he crawls in and goes to sleep.

Well, if he's still up there,

he could be
in plenty of trouble.

Yeah.

I shouldn't have let him talk me
into covering for him, you know?

I felt sorry for him.

Thought I was doing him a favor.

You know this guy?

Yeah, that's Mr. Wells. He works for
Mr. Warren. He's a coin dealer up on 18.

What's the problem?

I don't know,
he was acting kind of weird.

He's got a lot of expensive
looking items in here.

How many times do I have to
tell you? I was just doing my job,

trying to save Mr. Warren's
merchandise for him.

Is there a safe in that office?

Yes, there is.
And it's a big one, too.

And fireproof, I'll bet. Yeah.

Look, fellas...

Well, why don't we just find this
Mr. Warren you claim you work for?

Now, that'|| settle things,
won't it?

No. You see him come out?

He might've been injured.

Why don't you take Mr. Wells here
over to the aid station in the garage?

Whatever you say, Sergeant.

Come on, Mr. Wells,
let's see if we can find your boss, huh?

I bet he's really going to be
very grateful for what you did.

Charlie really
came out of that lucky.

Once he gets the rest
of the fire off, too.

He was a fool.

He should have never
checked out that hallway alone.

I guess he was kind
of anxious about Sue.

Not knowing whether
she got out okay.

Yeah, well, there's a right way
to do things and a wrong way.

That's mostly because the
right way makes more sense.

You know what makes more sense?

Not to talk shop while
we're on a break. I'm b*at.

Man, with those elevators out,

I don't even wanna think
about making those stairs again.

Oh, stairs! Hey,
don't even mention them!

DISPATCHER: Squads 51 and 110,
Battalion 14.

Are you available
for an assignment?

Squad 51, Squad 110 available.

Report to staging area.

DISPATCHER: Battalion 14, HT 110.
We're picking up a new hot spot on 20.

Nineteenth Division,
Battalion 14.

Check your north corridor west of the
elevators for vertical extension to 20.

Staging, Assistant 7.

What have you got to
put on this new fire?

Well, I'm going to have to pull two
engine companies from stairwell support.

All right, go ahead.

How are you fixed for equipment?

Oh, I can give them
two two-and-a-halfs.

We'll need some air
bottles in about 15 minutes.

Assistant 7.

Good grief, 14 floors.

What a hypocrite. I thought
you said you weren't going to

climb anymore stairs.

Can I fly?

Chief,
you got another assignment for us?

Yeah. We're running
out of air bottles

for the crew up on 19 and

And check for any real bad heat
exhaustion cases up there, huh?

Right.

JOHNNY: Oh, man,
I don't believe it.

Porters! World w*r Ill is going
on and we wind up as porters.

DAVE: Oh, stop complaining.

My people have been doing
it longer than yours have.

[ALL PANTING]

[GRUNTING]

Yeah, get him
to the Burn Ward, stat.

I don't know how many more
of these we can handle, Joe.

As many as we have to, Dix.

What are you looking for, Chief?

Any occupants
above the fire floors

who might be using
hazardous materials.

Look, this is
an office building.

High priced, too.

We don't allow any
manufacturing on the premises.

ROY: How we doing?

MOORE: Hot and slow.

Look, we got a hot spot working
up the floor from 19 into 20.

We want to get a couple of air
bottles down there and a few in here.

Okay, who's this tenant in 2130?

Oh, that's Dr. Wayne.

He's a dentist. Runs
a very big operation.

Assistant 7 to 20th Division.

HT 110 on 20. Go ahead.

We have a large scale
dental operation in Suite 2130.

Get a crew on it right away.

Hey, get those air bottles.
Get that hose back and let's go.

Chief, look, what's...
What's the problem there?

He's just a dentist.

Yeah, and dentists use oxygen
and nitrous oxide under pressure

and if it's a big operation,
he's got lots of it.

If that stuff gets hot,
it could blow.

Hey, Cap!

Feel this wall. A little hot.

Let's get some water...

You Okay?

You all right?

Yeah, I'm okay.

Battalion 21, this is Squad 51.

We've just had a major expl*si*n

with injuries on the 21st floor.

We need immediate assistance.

DISPATCHER: Chief 21 to
Divisions 18, 12 and 20.

Respond all available spare
personnel to 21st floor by both stairwells.

Firemen trapped and injured.

DAVE: We gotta get outta here.

They'll never get to us in time.

The elevators are out.

Let's go down the shaft.

What about the Captain?
We've got to take him with us.

We'll take him with us.

Okay, now, let's take
what's left of that line

and wrap it around him and
take him down between us, okay?

Johnny, you can go...

Johnny! Johnny! You can
belay us down, all right?

Okay.

You okay? I'm okay.

I'll take this one, then.

It's stuck on the eighth floor.

Johnny, you ready?

JOHNNY: Hold it.

Okay, ready.

Okay.

Okay, legs first.

All right.

JOHNNY: Wait, wait.
Hold it! Hold it! Hold it!

You're going to have to
hang on. I've run out of hose!

All right!

Hang on!

[GRUNTING]

Hey, hold up!
The grease is building up

and our gloves
are slipping bad down here.

Okay, all right,
I got you, I got you.

[GRUNTING]

All right, you're going to have
to slow it down. That's all I got.

All right, hang on,
just hang on.

Get this thing off. Yeah.

Okay.

I'll get off first.
Okay. You got him?

I got it.

Okay, okay bring him back.

I don't believe it,
but it worked!

He's coming to again. Yeah.

Now all we have to do is schlep
him down 15 flights of stairs.

Do you see any broken bones?
Just a sec.

Okay. Come on, just relax, Cap.

Ease off. All we have
to do is lift him up.

Okay.

Let's get it over with.

You got him? Yeah.

You got him? Yeah.

Hold it. Hold it. Dave,
hold it. Okay, take him away.

Your captain sure
knows how to bounce.

He's got three cracked ribs,
a mild concussion,

but we feel
he's going to be okay.

Thanks,
Doc. That's how he got to be captain.

DISPATCHER: Battalion 21
to Assistant 7.

No further signs of fire
on any floors.

We can release all units except
those needed for overhaul and clean-up.

Assistant 7.

I don't know about you,
but I'm not on clean up.

DAVE: Oh, man!

You know, I could use a drink.

Thanks a lot for the job.
Super job! Thank you.

Quite a day, huh?

Yeah, well, as disasters go,
I think we got off easy.

I'll tell you
two things, Doctor.

We sure could have used a lot
more help and a lot better equipment.

But I still don't know where
the money's gonna come from.

[LAUGHS] Neither do I, Doctor.

Neither do I.

What are you people doing
here? This is private property.

Now get those sample
cases out of here.

Come on!
Use the service entrance.

Come on, let's go!
[BOTH LAUGHING]

I'll get your names. Find out who you
guys are and what's going on out here.

Oh, to hell with it!

And they say fire fighting is the
world's most dangerous profession.

Sure it is, pal.

Sure it is.
